Craving Spanish tapas for my bday later this week. Can anyone recommend a restaurant they love? 🥳
Barcelona
This is the way. Get there a little early if you want a table on a busier night (6pm or earlier)
Boqueria
So good. Cheap for happy hour too.
Inspired by the ceasar salad thread. The only time I’ve ever had paella was at District Kitchen. I called them up during lockdown to order some but learned it had been taken off the menu. It appears to have since returned, but I’m curious: who serves your favorite paella in the area?
I liked it at Taberna Del Alabardero (in person, not take out).
another vote for Taberna.
It's 50% off or more in their market Cafe next door
Del Mar at the wharf serves excellent Spanish food. It comes with a price tag though.
I haven’t been to Jaleo in several years but Jose andres is my fav chef and I’m sure his paella is great too
Del Mar > Taberna Del Alabardero > Jaleo imho
I’ve never been to Taberna! Adding to my list, thank you
Taberna del Alabardero has great Paella.
They opened a store /Market Cafe next door and for only $20 you get 2-3 portions .
Seafood + Chicken and chorizo + Vegetarian options .
In their restaurant probably 2-3X the price
Del Mar’s seafood paella, no question. The seafood is sourced from the same places as Fiola Maré, their sister restaurant (Fiola Maré being the best seafood in the city).
The paella at Del Mar is as close to perfect as I can imagine paella to be. It’s ruined every other paella in the city for me.
No, I’m not exaggerating. It’s worth the hefty price tag.
Boqueria or Bodega in Georgetown. Joselito is great for tapas and other spanish dishes, since I havent tried any paella there.
Adding Bodega to my list of places to try now. I’ve been wanting to go when I visit DC, but never got a chance to be around that side of the city hehe.
Bodega is one of my favorite spots around there. Really excellent date spot since you can just split a few small plates and some sangria or something.
Joselito does not make paella, but their food is incredible.
With Mi Cuba in Columbia Heights now closed, any recommendations on decent Cuban food in DC? Been out to Cuba de Ayer, but I don't always have time for the 40 minute drive.
Don’t let anyone tell you in here an answer, I’m Cuban and from Florida and the answer is nothing now. There’s a place in Bethesda that’s not THAT bad by any means, worth it if you’re up there, but Colada for food is downright bad sometimes and certainly not scratching the itch, and Cuba Libre is overpriced and not amazing. Honestly the best version of what you might want that I’ve found is the Cuban Platter at Lauriol Plaza. It’s a super weird suggestion but it truly is the only good scratched itch .
Yea my girlfriend is Cuban from Hialeah, and she says the Cuban food is bad in DC. I just think all the food is bad in DC.
Well okay that second part is not true lol
Cubano’s is the name of the Bethesda one
So we LOVED Mi Cuba and our Cuban friend says the only place that is even in the same category is Sabor de Cuba in Frederick. We haven’t been yet but we trust her judgment.
Mi Cuba wasn’t great, salty af. I grew up in Havana on the Hudson. Nothing in DC is good Cuban.
Cuba Libre sucks! I asked for mojo and they told me this wasn’t my grandma kitchen.
Nothing in DC, I’m not Cuban but grew up in Miami…. Best shot for Cuban is Sabor de Cuba in Fredrick… run by great Cuban family …. REAL CUBAN BREAD…. Make it in house… best option in the DMV.
I enjoyed Castas Rum Bar this weekend! I don't know Cuban food well but I thought it was delicious
Meh. Food was mediocre
Not really Cuban, but the two Dominican brothers who own Mecho's and los Hermanos make a fantastic pernil, rice and black beans, maduros and empanadas.
Seems like every Mexican place I’ve been to has mostly been “you stay for the margaritas” type atmosphere and not the “food is great”.
I grew up in Alexandria and have always loved our go-to spots off of route 1 (RIP Don Pablo’s, love El Paso), but what are people’s favorite Mexican places actually IN the city?
This is the correct answer. Best street tacos in the district, also amazing birria, and don’t sleep on the torta.
Their tacos are good, however I thought their Mole was pretty awful.
In my opinion, Taqueria Distro Federal was better, cozier, and older and took me back to Mexico city more, but everyone's drive for the new hotness and Habanero opening across the street put them out of business. I haven't tried the new location way north.
Just walk into any spot along 14th in Columbia Heights.
Starting at Mi Casita, Tequila y Mezcal, Anafre, taqueria habanero, Mezcalero. And more a couple of blocks up from the last two.
Also, El Chucho in Columbia Heights really stepped up their food game to match their drinks game recently. All the tacos are good and their other dishes are also good in taste and size.
I was blown away by the tacos at Tequila y Mezcal. I asked the server to bring me his favorite tacos and one of them was the pulpo (octopus) and it was fantastic and tender and so flavorful!
Second this. Highly recommend the enchiladas verde here too.
No, you’re definitely not the only one. Mexican food in DC proper sucks
Cielo Rojo is great but a bit more “highbrow”, not street-style. But tasty nonetheless.
I had great mole at Cielo Rojo. Worth the trip.
This is the way! Literally all trash to meh. The reason for that is the majority of people from Mexico go to CA, AZ, NM, and TX. DC is mostly people from Central/South America. So different flavors and/or trying to re-create favorite Mexican foods we like.
The solis chef chains (Mezcalero, el sol, anafre, etc.) tends to have the best reputation. Lots of variety in price points too- good luck!
Best introduction to Quesabirria!
I’m relatively new to DC and was just wondering if you guys have any recommendations for any authentic Puerto Rican food in the city?
I definitely am missing my mom’s cooking, and wanted to see if there are any “hidden gems” here!
Nothing comes to mind that's actually in the city. But, La Casa del Mofongo in Silver Spring area is pretty great. You'll find the only proper Latino food style actually in DC is Salvadorean. The suburbs will have more varied options.
Ah- thank you for the heads up! Definitely willing to head outside of DC proper if it means good eats haha
Wepa, boricua, bienvenid@! I moved here last year and always go to Los Hermanos in Columbia Heights when craving stuff from home, best arroz con gandules/pernil you'll find. They also have jugo de parcha natural/Malta India. For mofongo, as the others have said, La Casa del Mofongo in Silver Spring. There's also a restaurant near Eastern Market called Tortuga Caribbean Grill, their mofongo is also a killer. Alexandria has a food truck called Borinquen Box Lunch and they serve on Fridays a rotating menu (but they always have alcapurrias, empanadillas, and flan), it's really good too. If you like Medalla, it just arrived to the area and you can find it in many supermarkets.
Oh man that food truck is already calling my name, haha! This is all awesome- thanks so much!
La Casa del Mofongo in Silver Spring, MD and Mofongo Steakhouse & Grill in Woodbridge, Va are our favorites. There definitely should be more in the DMV area
I went to Mecho’s Dominican Kitchen in Ft. Lincoln several weeks ago and, while it is Dominican fare, their mofongo (truly PR style, not Mangú) with chicharrón (similar to chunks of chuletas Kan Kan) was very good. The menu also says they have chicharrón de pollo, pernil, tostones and bistec encebollado but I haven’t tried any of those yet. Bonus: heard they had Medalla beer as well. Buen provecho!
I've got no idea what constitutes authentic Puerto Rican or Dominican food but I wanted to confirm that Mecho's is delicious.
Mecho's is great and carries veggie (impossible?) burgers now. I love their queso frito.
Awesome- Adding it to my list!
I know this is not near DC, but if you ever go to Virginia Beach, go to De Rican Chef. When we stay over there for the weekend or longer, we just have to eat at least twice there.
Around here, we live closer to Mofongo Steakhouse in Woodbridge, but we like more La Casa del Mofongo.
If I’m ever there I’ll definitely stop by!
The other two have been mentioned a few times now, so I think I’m gonna try La Casa del Mofongo this weekend!
Have fun! Get some alcapurrias while you’re at it
Basically what it says in the title - i recently moved to DC from CA and I’ve been sort of disappointed with the Mexican food I’ve tried so far. I figured a good taco or burrito would help with this weather what are your favorite spots to get Mexican food in the area? (I have a car so I can also go outside the city!)
edit - thanks all for these amazing responses + detailed recs. I don’t have much else going on during the pandemic so I’ll try each of these + report back, if anyone is interested. Very excited to try more of the other cuisines suggested. thanks again.
It's not the response you're looking for, but I'd start getting into other Latin American cuisines that are better represented in this area, like Salvadorean, Columbian, Peruvian.
Also, just because it hasn't been mentioned, Tacos Y Tortas on Columbia Pike has pretty decent tacos, but nothing that's going to remind you of home.
Agreed on exploring other Latin American cuisines that are better represented here.
Every time this question comes up I feel like we need a refresher on histories of South & Central American diasporas so transplants can understand the food scene here on DMV♀️
I should say, I feel your pain! I am from an area that is world famous for a certain cuisine and I have given up eating that cuisine outside of my hometown. I am the kind of person to get really annoyed by poor facsimiles of great food and would rather have nothing at all. Which is why I eat limited Mexican food in the DMV.
Others have mentioned trying other Latin American foods. Maybe because of my aforementioned inclination for grumpiness, I find those make me feel worse. I know Salvadoran food is beloved, but I find it mostly bland and unsatisfying because what I really want is excellent Mexican food and they really are very, very different.
We have this question every few weeks. There are basically 2 camps:
As a Californian, I have not found a Mexican restaurant in the DMV that is as good as the food in CA. I just make sure to have some really good Mexican food when I visit CA and the rest of the time I make my own at home.
People in the #2 camp are wrong. There’s not even Mexican food that’s as good as south Florida in DC, forget about Texas or California.
Eh Chuys is pretty good. Not the best but still pretty good especially for a chain restaurant
Texan weighing in—there’s a food truck called Tacos el Chilango between Courthouse and Roslyn, it doesn’t move. They are authentic Mexican street tacos (hence the name), not el Salvadoran. IMO that’s your best bet for actual Mexican food, but they only do very simple street tacos. As far as I can tell, there are no Mexican tamales anywhere here, and for some reason, DC can’t manage a good breakfast burrito.
Edit: also, like the rest of us, you’ll just be beat down by mediocrity over time. If you like torchy’s-style tacos though, hit up Taco Bamba. It’s what I’d call new age/hipster/Austin tacos. Very tasty.
they also have a location above U street
Also if you feel like going to Baltimore, try Taqueria El Sabor del Parque across from Patterson.
Or Tijuana Tacos. The most authentic Mexican. By Patterson Park also, on Baltimore street
Seems like a lot of suggestions for El Sol, will absolutely add it to the list. Thank you
I once dated a Peruvian chick on a cruise in the Caribbean that got me into Peruvian/Latin cuisine. I've only had good Latin food in Florida but I'm visiting DC now so what are some good Peruvian/Latin restaurants in DC!?
Surprised nobody has said Mi Cuba Cafe. Best Cuban food in DC, which isn't saying much, but I moved here from Miami and still think it holds its own really well.
What do you think about Little Havana?
Haven't been.. l've heard good things in terms of the food, but its pretty pricey ($28 for vaca frita is insane) and has this annoying bougie vibe like it's trying to capitalize on being a "hip" Cuban place instead of just being a good restaurant.
El Chalan in downtown is good Peruvian. But Peruvian is not the same as like pan-latin american like you're asking.
Yeah, this place is great. Nice little restaurant with great food. Huacatay and District Rico are good if you're looking for something casual and quick for lunch.
Since you are grouped Peruvian & Latin together, I'd go out and recommend Los Hermanos in Columbia Heights. It's actually Dominican but very good home cooking served cafeteria style with big portions. FWIW, my Cuban friend from Miami loves it as well.
And get some mofongo or bistec encebollao!
> I once dated a Peruvian chick on a cruise in the Caribbean
Did it just last the span of the cruise?
Anyways, go to Pollo Rico in Arlington. My fav Peruvian rotisserie chicken in the area.
I live two blocks away. It's fantastic, I just wish ther had plantains and yucca.
Go to Super Pollo on George Mason / Wilson. The bird is just about as good, but they have all the fun sides you’re looking for.
Came here for this exact thing.
Sardis in College Park
I am originally from Southern California and moved out to dc and miss good Mexican food. I have been unable to find any so far, I need some recommendations. And I mean like actual good Mexican food and not the East coast version
Reset the counter. Cielo Rojo on Takoma Park or Los Patroncitos food truck that bounces between Hellbender and Streetcar 82. Nothing else compares.

Edit made. I am an awful tyler on mobile. They the grasshopper!
Edit: Goddamnit. I'm leaving this typo.
I like Mezcalero in Columbia Heights a lot. Also Hyattsville has the best hole in the wall taco places as thats where the biggest Mexicans population is.
I can’t believe not one of you has mentioned Tacos El Chilango on V St. It’s such a stellar hole-in-the-wall.
That was for positive karma. Now for something that will get me shot. It’s no where near as good as you’re used to, but District Taco now has California burritos.
That’s if you’re in a pinch and need fries in a burrito.
It's super good, assuming you want tacos.
Muchas Gracias 5029 Connecticut Ave NW . The entire menu is always amazing.
Yep. The fish tacos aren’t exactly what you’d get on a California beach but they are solid in their own right.
I mean ....we are on the east coast far far far away from Mexico so why wouldn't you get the "east coast" version lol
You twit
What is the best spot?
I’m from Florida moved here 10 years ago. There is very few if any good Latino Caribbean spots in the DMV.
Edit: my favorite is probably los hermanos a Dominican cafeteria style place in Columbia Heights.
I have met Puerto Ricans from Puerto Rico and they approve it Qui Qui. My Cuban FL friends also approve of colada shop
Oh my God, how did I forget Qui Qui. They are great, although it is a bit of an upscale dining experience. The prices will not be what you’re used to. Colada shop on the other hand… look I’ve been eating croquetas and cafecito since I was like 10. Colada shop is fine. It’s what we have. It’s not great, but there isn’t another option.
Qui Qui on 7th st NW!
Qui qui Que Rico La Famosa
I'm from Florida and moved here a year ago, so I also ask this
following, I'm also coming from florida interested in this
Hello fellow foodies!
Before I ask my question, I want to thank all of you for your extremely wonderful suggestions in this subreddit. I've taken my family to a couple of places after perusing various threads here and they loved all of the places. Thank you very much for that!
Now on to my query. My father-in-law's birthday is coming up soon. I'd like to take him to a nice Spanish restaurant. Ever since we went to Spain a few years back, he's been into Spanish food, especially paella. If anyone here has been to La Flauta in Barcelona, you'll know what I'm talking about with regards to tapas. Can you guys recommend any restaurants/cafes that have excellent Spanish food. At the moment, I have a reservation at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba but I'm willing to change it for something better. Any help will be appreciated!
If you’re open to dishes outside of paella and/or tapas, see if the menu for Mfk appeals to you. Very small spot with great food.
We are open to dishes outside of paella and tapas. I'll check Mfk out and see if that's something that piques his interest! I appreciate the reply!
Mfk is seafood focused and I found it very different from paella and tapas. That's one of things about Spanish cuisine - the variety. If you don't mind a hike meson sabika has great tapas and ambience. I believe they also have another location in South loop (tapas valencia?). Check out their brunch too.
Unpopular opinion, Emilio’s in Hillside. Unpopular only because it’s not within the city and not accessible via public transit. Was there last night. Their food is awesome! And their Paella is awesome, worth the wait.
Little Madrid and Emilio's is something that popped up in other threads as well. I'll check their menu out and see if he likes it! Thank you!
Emilio's was one of our favorite spots when it was still in the city.
Boqueria is somewhat of a chain and has better food than Ba Ba Reeba. That place has an amazing happy hour and that’s the only time I’d go.
Never heard of Boqueria. I'll check it out and see if it's something he likes. I appreciate the reply!
Yes! Love boqueria
Tapas Barcelona in Evanston is our favorite Spanish place.
Yes. I saw Little Madrid had better reviews than BBR, especially newer ones. I have a feeling I'll be changing my reservation! Thank you!
I dream about their grilled octopus often. so gooood.
I used to live in Spain, and I'm always lamenting the lack of affordable Spanish food here. Little Madrid is a worthy splurge for the quality though.
