TL;DR
Brooklyn Film Camera
Brooklyn Film Camera is frequently recommended for those seeking vintage cameras. It is praised for its friendly staff and specialization in Polaroid and other instant cameras [2:6]
[3:3]. While the shop is small, it offers a unique vibe and occasionally stocks 35mm models
[5:1].
B&H Photo Video
B&H is often described as a mecca for photographers and is highly recommended for anyone visiting New York [3:1]
[5:2]. Although their used film camera selection might not be extensive, the sheer size and variety of products make it worth a visit
[5:3]. However, shoppers should be aware that prices can be inflated due to the high demand and cost of running a business in NYC
[2:1].
Adorama
Adorama is another well-known store for camera enthusiasts [2:2]
[5:2]. While some users have noted that prices can be higher than expected, it's still a reputable place to find vintage cameras
[1:5]. It's advisable to check online first or visit multiple stores to compare prices
[5:5].
Other Options and Considerations
While K&M and 42nd Street Photo are mentioned, they are often criticized for being overpriced or having poor customer service [2:4]
[5:7]. For those interested in exploring beyond traditional stores, Brooklyn Flea in Dumbo offers a chance to browse various vendors, including those specializing in film cameras
[5:2]. However, estate sales and online platforms like eBay may provide better deals compared to physical stores in NYC
[4:1]
[1:6].
In summary, while New York has several options for purchasing vintage cameras, potential buyers should be prepared for higher prices and limited availability. Visiting these stores can be more about the experience and seeing the products firsthand rather than finding bargains.
Looking for vintage camera shops! Any ideas?
Used Film Camera Store? from awhile back recommends Adorama and Greenpoint Terminal Market among others.
While at Adorama last year, I saw the used camera repair guy examining a camera and say to a co worker something to the affect, if they find the flaw, they can return it.
So buyer beware.
Wow it's already been a year since I posted to that thread.
As I mentioned in that post, I buy used camera gear online. I've picked up bodies on KEH.com, eBay, have also bought refurbished bodies from the manufacturer. I've looked at Adorama and B&H but they didn't ever seem to have anything I was looking for, and if they did it seemed to be marked up a lot higher than I wanted to pay.
Since I posted to that thread, I've picked up medium format lens and back on eBay... buying from sellers in Japan since that's where I found the best selection and prices, even with the cost of shipping.
Developing B&W at home now, though drying has been an issue since I'm not able to seal off a space and keep it dust free, and it's been over 30 years since I've done it so I'm a bit rusty.
Your bathroom is probably going to be the most dust-free room in your home.
You can run the shower for a while as you're doing the final wash and that should reduce a lot of the airborne dust and it should stay relatively down for the hour or so you need to dry them. Just don't keep going in and checking.
For Brooklyn you can hit Photodom, Exposure Therapy, and Brooklyn Film Camera. Small shops that do scan + dev but also stock 35mm and 120 cameras
Unless you are shopping at B&H or KEH.com then you are going to be paying ridiculous inflated hipster bullshit "boutique" prices on things.
Just buy it online.
Lower expectations there.
I do not know of any brick and mortar shop that specializes in only that these days. The overhead nyc would never allow that with the sort of margin that brings in. And they are sort of fussy to deal with because of false customer expectations.
There was a flea market guy on 7th Ave in PS but I have not seen him in a few months.
Most vintage camera trading involves the detachable lenses as they are used with adapters for digital cameras and more and more in digital video to create certain looks.
You can find anything better online. (Which answers most of these where do I buy questions, this is not 1981.)
You will see random used equipment in camera shops and vintage stores. Usually at a mark up. It is not predictable so you need to know average offering prices before e you go.
My advice is decide on the camera you want and buy it on EBAY. Even if it does not "work." You at first or eventually will need to replace the foam and the rubber seals as they deteriorate over time. And have all the settings calibrated. So find an intact but not functioning one or two to buy then take them to that repair place (forget the name) and pay for an overall of the foam, seals, all mechanical parts cleaned and re-lubricated and all the setting calibrated.
It is a pointless expensive hobby. I write that as someone who partakes in it.
I make it work by LIMITING what I collect and focusing on systems I can share lenses with digital cameras. That is why I overlap the hobby with Micro 4/3 digital.
The lenses hold value. Especially all manual ones. The cameras not so much unless is ti a Leica or a popular rangefinder like a Canon Model 7.
I love shooting film and I'm always looking for cool little spots that have hidden gems or just a great vibe and a good collection of film cameras or unique photo gear.
Would love to hear if anyone has any recommendations for this sort of thing?
B&H and Adorama for stores.
Museum of the Moving Image for history.
There are no hidden gems in NYC for stuff like this. Life is expensive, so used camera gear is more expensive. Running a business is also much more expensive in NYC. If someone puts effort into running a business like this, they'll be one of the top google results when you search "used film cameras NYC". Nobody is running a secret used camera store with a great selection.
Don't visit NYC expecting to find deals or good value. The same can be said about the used market on Facebook Marketplace too. Expect people to be asking much more for stuff like that.
Having said that, if you're visiting from a city that doesn't really have any used camera stores at all, it's definitely nice to visit these stores.
I've been to most of the camera stores in NYC, and honestly I haven't really seen anyone with a remarkable used film camera selection. Most of it is the stuff you'd expect to find. I'm sure the market has ups and downs, but I've never said "wow, didn't think I'd ever see one of those". I haven't visited these stores frequently, so maybe I'm unlucky.
I moved to NYC from a smaller city of about 700,000 people (just moved back recently), and honestly the used market on Facebook Marketplace in my home city is twice as good as the used market in NYC. I would say the same thing about used bikes, and vintage video games too. NYC's used market is not good, in my opinion.
K&M has a bunch of cameras in stock, but are typically extremely overpriced. They tried selling me a Canon Elan 2 for $250 once when Adorama had the exact same camera for about $45-$50. That and the dude that works the used camera counter is kind of standoff-ish and a dick in general
Yeah I didn't get the best impression of that store either.
They want over $200 for their Nikon FG cameras, and you can find those in mint condition on Ebay for under $100.
Ha-- sorry for reviving an old thread but I was there today. Canon AE-1 Programs for $300. I asked about a Fujfilm 645 and he said $1500-$1900 and then added "I'm not EBAY." Yeah, you're a bitter old gatekeeping prick who thinks his beat to shit F100 is worth $400.
Thank you for the honest and thorough reply I will temper my expectations. I'm based in LA so what you're saying tracks with the price of stuff. Good to know - appreciate it!
I agree with all of this. Film camera prices in NYC are high. Fun to shop if you have money to blow, but don't expect to find deals.
Brooklyn Film Camera
THE camera shop for Polaroid nerds. Amazing staff. They recently fully restored my SX-70 Sonar after I accidentally sat on it in the open position (don’t ask lmao)
That's amazing they fixed it. Hard to find these days
Hit up B&H.
Picturehouse has a great selection of photo books. K&M is the classic for film geeks.
So, I'll be visiting New York later this month and I'm looking to buy a new 35mm camera. I don't really have any camera in my mind, so I'd love to find a place I could browse around.
Does anyone know a cool shop I could visit?
There used to be so many camera stores in New York; like dozens. Since the 80’s Beards & Hats have slowly but surely monopolized camera sales. I love those guys, have dropped tens of thousands there.
Brooklyn Film Camera is great, if tiny. They lean toward instant and fun-factor cameras, but I noticed some 35mm models on their site. They have been on-again-off-again with in-store visits (covid), so call ahead.
B&H is kind of a mecca for photographers in general, and it has some film cameras listen on their website.
Their used film gear department is always busy and the stock on the shelves behind the counter always has something interesting. Definitely worth a stop if you're in town and have an hour to kill.
Photodom K+M
B&H and Adorama. B&H is King in NYC.
Agreed, not really any bargain place in nyc. Sometimes you can find some nice point and shoot at goodwill, but that’s pretty much it...
Any fellow New Yorkers know places to get some cheap SLR’s or point and shoots? Such as any stores that you can get a good find. I notice plenty of people getting good cameras at cheap prices in other states. Also preferably in Brooklyn, Manhattan or Queens.
Green Village, Brooklyn Vintiques, Mother of Junk, Furnish Green, Obscura Antiques and Oddities
Thank you, wow. Have you scored some cameras here? If so what have you gotten
The C330 and XA combo is unmatched for dual shooting. On a busy photo day for me, like a protest or other big event, I’ll have my C330 with a handle in my left hand and the XA strapped around my right wrist set to infinity.
Haha yeah I’m trying to use my XA more in many different light situations, it’s a good combo but still need some practice with both.
I've found thrift stores in Manhattan at least (I go less often in Brooklyn and Queens) to be really useless for cameras. The few times I have seen them they were being sold at eBay prices. I've had way more luck with estate sales, got lots of great stuff at those.
You absolutely have to visit B&H just to behold it, even if their used film camera selection is tiny compared to the size of the store.
The other camera stores in Manhattan where you can find film cameras are: Adorama, K&M, and 42nd Street Photo.
If you can make it out to Brooklyn on a weekend, the Brooklyn Flea in Dumbo always has lots of cameras, including a vendor who specializes in film cameras. If your goal is to physically get your hands on as many cameras as possible, this is your best best.
B&H is great! I bought my best film camera there. The shop assistant had to check the price thrice because he couldn’t believe that model—which was in great shape—was that cheap. So yes, have a look there!
Avoid 42nd st camera at all cost, scam
Yeah I've been there years ago and it was unreal. It's definitely one of my first stops.
these have a good reputation - http://www.brooklynfilmcamera.com/ (im from the UK so i've never been)
FYI, if you go with B&H, it might be worth waiting a couple of weeks before buying used. I was just there buying some chemicals and wandered up to the used camera section, and was told a lot of their stock had been depleted because school had just started. (Though i was asking after a 35mm SLR.)
The employee also recommended buying online first to make sure you get it, and you can always “return it” immediately in person if you decide you don’t actually want the item.
Any retail film camera store in NYC is going to be pretty expensive. Imo you're better off trying to find better deals online. If you really want to go in person though, I like Brooklyn Film Camera.
Thanks. Yeah it's not so much to buy necessarily as being able to see and hold cameras I am interested in
go and check out b&h’s used camera stock!
Good plan! I've been lucky with the cameras I've bought online but I do a lot of research on blogs and forums (and Reddit) on a particular model before I buy one. I've passed on a couple that I thought sounded intriguing until I read some less than stellar reviews of them. But getting your paws on one in person is a lot more informative than reading blogs.
heading there in a week. never been, what camera shops are there?
k&m used section is a must see. biggest used camera stock in the city plus they have so many insanely cool/rare/unique film cameras. feels like a museum. if you go to b&h the other stores will be boring in comparison. adorama is pretty run of the mill i would definitely check out foto care instead but up to you. other than that really just brooklyn film camera or the leica store if that's your thing.
if you want other photo stuff check out dashwood books. legendary little spot. andre wagner is also having his first solo show at the gordon parks foundation a short train ride north of manhattan. could be cool to say you saw it's first run when it inevitably ends up in the moma. international center of photography downtown by the williamsburg bridge also rules, great book section and sick exhibition up right now.
Photodom, Exposure Therapy, Bleeker Digital Solutions are some cool local labs I've either used or heard good things about. Color House on Lafayette Street is another lab with a MASSIVE film fridge that's always well stocked.
Camera Doctor on W39th Street in Chelsea is an old school repair shop with a bunch of cool gear lying around.
Brooklyn Film Camera on Grand Street is another sick spot that has some niche equipment (mostly polaroid focused) and cool expired film, at least the last time I was there.
B&H and Adorama of course.
Also the International Center for Photography in Midtown always has good exhibits and an amazing bookstore.
Never been there, but how about Brooklyn Film Camera? They are a pretty big staple in the instant film community and they have a pretty nice collection of instant cameras and a gallery i've heard.
Check out Photodom @
1717 Broadway #310, Brooklyn, NY 11207
go to the massive BH, its multiple floors and just wild to see how much they have in one spot. Maybe not buy anything, but just take it in for how huge it is.
okay sweet, i’ve heard of that. is it as cool as everyone says it is??
Yes, it is. It's just kinda magical.
I will never forget seeing B&H’s rail/belt system the first time I was there. It was like being in Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory but for cameras. Although I think the rail/belt system has been having issues lately and it is not in use. Remember, they (and Adorama) close on Saturday. On Saturdays, you can check out K&M in lower east side which is next to Color House (a great lab). K&M is smaller but their used inventory is pretty impressive too.
Spending a few days in New York next week and was hoping to pick up some New/Second hand steelbooks and 4k limited editions for my collection. Was hoping someone could recommend some locations to try my luck.
Thanks in advance 🙏
There’s a newer boutique store called Night Owl I believe.
Thanks for the info, looks like it’s in Brooklyn. I’ll add it to the list👍
Search this subreddit. This has been asked several times.
Thanks for your help 😀
Good luck! NYC should have some great options.

Forbidden Planet. Plenty in front of and behind the counter to make you happy.
Thinking about treating myself to a really nice camera, but just wanted to know if anyone here has had any experience with this before. Thank yoU!
B&H probably has a bigger used inventory than Adorama but they are the only two physical stores that I would trust with used equipment.
I would probably also check KEH, which is online only but they are very well-known and highly trusted. They usually have a huge selection and better prices.
Top tier camera store in the city. go for it
Will they have additional sales during Black Friday for used things? 🙊
Yes, one of the better camera shops for used stuff by far.
Adorama and B&H are 100% legit. Buy with confidence. It’s the P.O. Box places out in Brooklyn selling over eBay that you have to watch out for.
(RIP J&R)
Damn J&R, used to buy all my electronics and music there
Yeah, same. I was as guilty as anyone else of taking the lazy way out and just ordering shit on Amazon and of course streaming made DVDs and CDs irrelevant, but I miss browsing through THE BLOCK OF STUFF, and it was a fun “only in New York” experience with the Laotian floor staff and all of the Hasidic managers.
I haven’t had the heart to even go by there in years: it was still mostly vacant the last time I did. Sic transit gloria mundi.
RIP J&R indeed 🥹
I
I have had positive experiences with both
B&H just great- but as above watch Sabbath times.
Photodom
B&H has to be mentioned. It’s really something to see. Take care to check their opening hours because it’s owned/run by Orthodox Jews so they close early on a Friday and aren’t open on Saturday.
Visiting the city next month, and wanted to know the best spots to catch some film and maybe shop for some cameras, I'm aware of Brooklyn Film Camera, anything else you guys would recommend?
Photodom in Brooklyn is Black owned. They sell film, apparel and cameras. They have same day processing too.
Second Photodom, fuck B&H
Now this is the reason why I asked, thank you so much!
B&H.
I’ve heard of these lil shops called B&H & Adorama out NYC way; hard to find but they may have film.
>Adorama
Thanks! Save them both
Also, check out the analog wiki.
Photodom!!!!
