Best Strategies for Mortal Kombat 1

TL;DR

  • Practice regularly, especially with tutorials and against AI.
  • Learn character-specific combos and fundamentals like blocking and footsies.
  • Watch professional gameplay to understand advanced strategies.

Practice and Tutorials

One of the most effective ways to improve in Mortal Kombat 1 is through regular practice and utilizing the game's tutorials. Many players emphasize the importance of completing both basic and advanced tutorials to understand game mechanics and character moves [4:1][5:1]. Practicing in modes like Towers or against AI can help you get comfortable with different characters and scenarios [4:1].

Character Selection and Combos

Choosing a character that fits your play style is crucial. Experiment with different types of characters such as zoners, brawlers, and those focused on footsies to see which suits you best [5:1]. Once you've selected a character, focus on learning their specific combo strings and how to integrate special moves into these combos [2:6]. Watching YouTube tutorials or professional players like NinjaKilla can provide insights into effective combo execution [2:3].

Fundamentals and Strategy

Understanding the fundamentals of fighting games, such as footsies, neutral game, and blocking, is essential [2:1]. Learning to block effectively, both standing and crouching, can make a significant difference in matches [3:8]. Additionally, practicing delay wake-ups and learning to adapt to different opponents' patterns are key strategic elements [2:5][2:2].

Sparring and Community Engagement

Finding a sparring partner, preferably someone more experienced, can accelerate your learning process. Engaging with the community by watching streams or joining forums can also be beneficial [1:3]. Playing casual matches is recommended over competitive leagues until you're confident in your skills [4:6].

Learning from Losses

It's important not to get discouraged by losses. Each match provides valuable lessons about your strengths and weaknesses. Analyze what went wrong and what your opponent did right to improve your strategy [2:1][3:1]. Remember, improvement takes time and persistence, so keep practicing and have fun along the way!

FYI I main Liu Kang

So I, with no experience in fighting games other than a bit of Street Fighter V, started playing MK1 for about 3 hours about yesterday, knowing nothing but having watched a few gameplay videos and the story mode 3 times on YouTube. Once I got it, I tested out numerous characters on versus mode vs the CPU, at Easy-Medium difficulty. I wanted to main, such as Raiden, Kung Lao, Sindel, Reiko, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Cage, Reptile, Baraka etc, and I really clicked with Liu Kang after playing his story mode chapter. (kinda obvious bcuz he is an easy tier character)

I also finished the main story at medium level, losing only 3 times.

Today I played an extra 4 hours, testing out invasions for the first time, completing the Invasions tutorial, playing my first tower from the towers of time,

then I tried playing online Kasual, with a WL ratio of 5/30, while winning many rounds in between the matches, (normally the second round, and I generally leave the opponents HP at like 250 while mines at 50, so I was pretty close in winning in the games I lost, pretty good for a guy who’s never really played). I think some people probably thought I was an alt account.

I also got my first hate dm after a match that I won lol, they thought I was trash, but I agreed with them, saying I only started yesterday.

My Liu Kang’s level is at level 6ish and my overall level is level 12. So given I have the winter holiday mostly free. What should I do to get better and fully master Liu Kang, and win more in Kasual and eventually starting Ranked?

Doesn’t matter what charecter you start with just please look up a video for them and learn combo strings and what attacks can hit your opponent when the game is much more fun that way and much easier go into practice range for as much as you need it made learning Omni man and ghost face much easier to practice or warm up

Bro, find a good sparring partner. Preferably someone better than you… so you can learn and consistently improve and get advice as you play. Watch R1ps Arena, NinjaKilla and Sonic fox… see their playstyle and try to mimic it. As time goes, you will find you are catching on and improving. You’ll find the openings and whiff punishes you couldn’t before… I’m down to practice with you if you need a sparring partner. No lie. Lemme know and I’ll send the info and we can throw down and have some fun.

Be good either way, bro!

If you playing versus or mk league learn your opponent I can’t stress that enough a lot of people play in a type of move pattern once you learn that you’ll be good and do not get discouraged if you lost like 2 games back to back the thing I will say tho is watch out for the sub zeros and the raidens their fucking annoying

Xombat does some REALLY good johnny cage tutorials, could also watch ninjakillas more recent johnny video. Both great ways to get down how johnny plays

Learn the fundimentals of fighting games like footsies, neutralgame, et cetera (this is info that'll be useful in ANY fighting game)

Play the tutorial, both the basic and the character specific one for Johnny if you're having trouble with learning the pacing of combos/ button presses.

Go on youtube, look up tutorials and tips for the character by pros. The newer the better.

Play lots of matches, learn how to adapt to different matchups, and learn from your mistakes but don't take losses too hard; no one gets "ok" at fighting games without getting their teeth punched in a whole lot, no one gets "good" without getting their ass beat a whole lot more after that.

To add to this play in practice mode often. I usually start every session with 10-20 minutes warming up my old fingers with my main combos.

Just bought MK1 and likely need help. Been a fan of the games for a long time, but never really got good. Beaten a lot of them, all the NRS titles, deadly alliance, deception, and Armageddon. But it was mostly luck. Any tips on combos, who should I play, what Dlc should I get?

once you understand the basic fundamentals, play against hard cpu, it will train your brain to get better at hit confirming into combos safely. Watch a basic bread and butter combo on yt for your desired main. Dont give up! This game is fun and everyone quits cuz they suck at cameos.

  1. Learn to block.
  2. Try VERY BASIC COMBOS (build that muscle memory)
  3. Don't do online matches, play the CPU on hard.
  4. Watch pro's play and pay attention to their movement.
  5. Have fun, play for a bit, take a break. The road to be decent at this game is long and hard.

Respectfully, advise number 3 is not very good. I guess it depends on what OP's long term goal is, but fighting CPUs will build bad habits

hartigas · 6 months ago

#3 is best at first. There's no pressure to win, just learn. It's fun, too. Go to practice mode and go ham with hard difficulty. When you jump online for the first time, the reward is sweet and addicting

14 upvotes on reddit
Amazing-Listen-1989 · 6 months ago

The point of fighting CPU is for learning the opponents combo strings, whats low, whats an overhead etc... too many players jump to online matches without a clue of the match up

12 upvotes on reddit
NotAddictedToCoffeee · 6 months ago

All good advice, I can't remember if blocking works the same way with MK11, but if you block while standing, someone can kick you or do a lower attack, but if you block while crouching, they can do an attack like a jump kick or a higher attack, so remember to use the right block for the right kind of attacks.

It depends on what you're getting good for. If you just want to enjoy the game on single player, you need to practice against higher level AI, understand its behavior, and work on your best combos with the characters you wanna play as.

If you want to get good competitively, you need to go get your ass kicked repeatedly by people who are better than you and pay close attention to what they are doing right and what you are doing wrong. This is what will reinforce good habits and help you get rid of bad ones.

Remember that human opponents and AI opponents are two different beasts. Don't assume that just because you're good at beating one that it means you'll be good at beating the other.

Doing towers is an effective way to practice against different characters, and it's what really worked for me.

DO THE TUTORIALS! Not just the basic ones, but the more advanced things, and the combo trials. They can really help you discover characters that you would enjoy learning more about as well as get a better understanding of the game overall.

As someone else has suggested, the tutorial is great. It’s lengthy and a lot of information for a beginner, but it’s all very relevant to playing well. From there, I’d suggest trying out a few different characters in practice or a fight against AI to see what character feels good to play. Try out a couple zoners, a couple footsie characters, a couple brawlers, etc. Or maybe look up the current strongest fighters and start there. Then you can focus on learning combos and how to set up combos once you’ve figured out what character(s) you like to play.

Good luck in kicking your boyfriends ass! :D

The best way to get good at any game imo is doing the basic tutorials to get the feel of the game, watch guides (try and find the most updated ones the games old so even if it may not seem like it 4 years ago probably still holds up) for general gameplay tips and how to play your character or just quick combo videos to get some basic bnbs. If you actually want to get good watch some pro gameplay of people playing whatever character you want to play

MadToxicRescuer · OP · 8 months ago

I've just been playing it again on very hard against someone other than joker and honestly I don't think it's for me.

I'm guttered because it's an outstanding game and I do think I prefer it over mk I just CANNOT do the walking back to block. I remember playing it now back in the day on very easy and just farming gear and just playing again and again for the love of the game.

As someone who's extremely good on mortal Kombat god damn I respect people who can go from walking back to immediately combo'ing on this game because I just can't.

Praying if a third installment comes, it's hold R2 to block or something.

Yea for me it was the opposite I wasn’t really into 2d fighting games until I played DBFZ then I tried tekken 7, and one day saw inj2 was on sale so I got it and did that learning process to get good at it. Mortal Kombat for me is one of the most recent fighting games I’ve tried so I can speak for the vise versa since all the games I’d played before were just holding the opposite direction to block but yea I can see why it’s weird to adjust to because to me it was another button I had to press. As someone who game Hopps a lot you have to learn to kind of have separate muscle memory for separate games.

Pick someone you like the look of. Lab them. If you don't click with them, move on. Once you feel comfy with someone and enjoy their gameplay and kombos, take them out into Invasions and the Towers to get some practice in with some Ai.

Once you're super comfy, jump online. You'll get stomped on, it's inevitable, but just keep at it.

Tips for playing Sub-Zero

Posted by A_Living_Dead_ · in r/MortalKombat · 4 months ago

I recently got Mortal Kombat 1 and I'm maining Sub-Zero. Any tips for that character? Fighting strats, defensive or offensive... It seems, like Sub-Zero always seems to me, that it's a bit heavy and slow, but with a couple of quick bait moves.

Also, I'm currently using Sektor as the kameo, cause his movement of throwing the opponent away helps me connect it with a slide, but I've seen people using Sonya. And of course, the classic Stryker.

Thanks.

Yeah you're mostly gonna wanna bait people into clone or just a whiff punish in general and then start your offense. I don't think he's a character where you just come out the gate swinging on offense, especially since his strings and frame data aren't good

5 upvotes on reddit
Empressai · 4 months ago

Take advantage of the fact most experienced players will not rush and attack Sub like a madman due to his excellent defense moves. His ice clone alone is enough to deter people from rushing you in a ready or getup position. With Sonya as kameo you can combo off all his moves. He has rather good mixups imo. His back 3,4 into kameo is a nasty combo starter which takes a lot of people by surprise.

Welcome!

  1. Go to settings, controls, turn OFF release check.

  2. Do the entire tutorial. Doesn't matter if you have no idea how to apply any of it.

  3. Pick a character. Go to kustomize and make sure the variations you're playing are kompetitive legal variations.

  4. Learn a combo in practice mode. Keep it simple. What's important is that you can do the combo consistently.

  5. Learn how to poke, throw and duck. This is basic shit that will fk you up if you don't know how to deal with it.

  6. Still with me? Congrats youre ready to play against people. Towers and AI are nice for cosmetics and getting used to your combos but terrible for practice against human opponents.

  7. Increase your matchup knowledge. This is where the shit learning curve for fighting games kick in. You can know YOUR character pretty good. Hell you might know a few gimmicks, and setups even. But to have effective defense you need to know your OPPONENTS character as well. And yeah you'll get the basics just from playing, but guess what, BASICS won't help you defend against your opponents carefully practiced gimmicks and setups. So what do you do? Learn every character in the game? Pretty much.

So when you get this far and realize you need to learn more about every character check out these resources.

Every Characters Low Overhead and Plus Moves

Every Move You Can Punish Everytime

Every Gap You Can Punish Or Flawless Block

If you're on console and want to do practice sets let me know. I'm on east coast and will be happy to find 30 minutes to run you through the basics.

play online. Except ur worried about win loss or ur trying to go pro. Most players know the combos to most characters so usually it’s about how each person plays . Some are aggressive m, defensive and play range . Just practise combos for ur fave character and also practise how to do the rolls wake up attacks and delays and air drop thing(they’re very useful ) .

People have ways to counter all those things aswell so at the end of the day so the practise mode and practise ur characters combos and just play online .

Best strategies for mortal kombat 1

Here are some effective strategies for Mortal Kombat 1:

  1. Learn the Basics:

    • Master the basic moves, including punches, kicks, and blocks. Understanding the timing and range of these moves is crucial.
  2. Character Selection:

    • Choose a character that fits your playstyle. Each character has unique strengths and weaknesses. For example, Scorpion is great for aggressive players, while Sub-Zero offers solid defensive options.
  3. Combos:

    • Practice character-specific combos in training mode. Combos can deal significant damage and create openings for further attacks.
  4. Spacing and Zoning:

    • Maintain the right distance from your opponent. Use zoning techniques to keep them at bay, especially if your character has projectiles.
