TL;DR
Subwoofer Brands and Models
Several brands are consistently mentioned across discussions as top contenders in the subwoofer market. JL Audio is frequently praised for its sound quality (SQ) and ability to hit low notes with precision [1:8],
[5:8]. Sundown Audio is recognized for its powerful bass and durability, making it a favorite among bass enthusiasts
[1:5],
[3:4]. Other notable mentions include Fi Audio, known for its robust performance and reliability
[2:1],
[3:2], and Alpine's Type X series, which offers tight, accurate bass in a compact enclosure
[1:3].
Sound Quality vs. SPL
When choosing a subwoofer, it's important to consider whether your priority is sound quality (SQ) or sound pressure level (SPL). JL Audio is often recommended for those seeking a balance between SQ and SPL [3:3]. For those who prioritize hard-hitting bass, brands like Sundown, Skar, and Deaf Bonce are suggested
[4:4]. It's crucial to match the subwoofer to your listening preferences and the type of music you enjoy.
Custom Enclosures
The importance of custom enclosures cannot be overstated. A well-designed box tailored to the specific subwoofer can drastically improve performance by optimizing airspace, port area, and tuning [3:1],
[3:7]. This customization ensures that the subwoofer operates at its best, providing the desired bass response and overall sound quality.
Price Considerations
Subwoofers are available at various price points, catering to different budgets. High-end options like JL Audio and Sundown Audio typically cost over $400 and offer superior performance [5:8]. Mid-range choices such as Rockford Fosgate and Skar Audio provide good value for money, while budget-friendly options like Dayton Audio offer decent sound quality without breaking the bank
[5:11].
Personal Preferences and Experiences
Ultimately, the "best" subwoofer is subjective and depends on individual preferences and experiences. Some users have fond memories of older models like the Adire Audio Brahma and Fi Q [2:1],
[2:4]. Others appreciate newer offerings from brands like Skar and Dayton Audio
[5:6],
[5:11]. When selecting a subwoofer, consider your personal taste, the type of music you listen to, and the environment in which you'll be using it.
Just got 2 sundown xv.2’s delivered and I’m starting to wonder if I should’ve gone with JL W7’s or something else. Sundown is expensive and I’m curious if there’s better value out there. What pair of subwoofers would you have gone with if money and electrical power weren’t a problem?
That is an impossible question to answer since it calls for subjective opinion. People have different tastes so the perfect sub for one person may not be the best for someone else, also the best sub for one type of music isn’t necessarily going to be the best for another.
Great point! How about in your taste, what do you see as some of the best subs to spend your time and money on?
I’m a running Sundown X12 v2d2, but thinking about switching to DC Audio level 5 because they require less airspace and have higher power handling.
Another thing to consider is the environment of each sub may differ drastically, thereby influencing the user’s opinion of them. The enclosure size and acoustical properties of the vehicle itself can effect the output.
My list of subs I would spend my money on are: •Sundown Audio, •DC Audio, •PPI
Bear in mind that I’m a bass head and prefer lower frequency bass (34 Hz) to higher frequency bass. Most commercially produced music hit around 50 Hz, so I rely on Rusticles, DJ Slow and Throw, DJ Hertz, or re-bass songs myself tuned to my car.
Probably get down voted as this is the sleeper sq woofer of the century, but Alpine X-W12D4. Super tight, accurate and digs low in a reasonably small enclosure.
Ahh I like a good alpine, never heard of this speaker I’ll check it out
The type x is actually a good SQL woofer, the others imo are meh..
Also going to depend on goal of spl, Sq, how loud you want the bass, a lot of variables are there
Say you had to list the kings of subwoofers, what brands are apart of the royal sub family?
It is funny that you Say Sundown is expensive and then wonder f you should have gotten a JL.
I would probably go Adire Brahma. Good SPL and SQ better and cheaper than the JL.
The Sundown Audio X-15 subs are awesome! I installed it into my minivan with ease and they work! Though one issue is my battery can’t handle it all the way up due to the alternator not being able to give it enough power so the headlights dim a little bit, but with the level I use you can feel it in your chest!
They were recommended by a friend and I can say these things are awesome the bass you get in these things will be all that you need to get that deep bass in music for a guy that listens to hip-hop rap this is perfect... 100% WORTH THE MONEY
Word of advice for people who don’t know how to advance with the loudness, start off slow and wait about a week before adjusting to make it louder.
Never heard of that brand I’ll check it out, i feel like I’m going to squeeze all the want for bass out with these xv2’s and eventually I’ll want to build for sq
You’ll love the hard hitting lows but an SQ sub like the 13w7 will give you those lows and clean bass notes
What car audio subwoofers have you heard that really blew you away?
I'm a bit old school, so I'm probably dating myself with some of these but I'll try to recall everything I've owned/heard:
Image Dynamics IDQ
Alpine Type R
Eclipse Titanium
Kicker L7
JL audio W3
JL Audio W7
RE SE
RE SX
RE XXX
Adire Audio Brahma
Adire Audio Tumult
My favorite has to be the 15" Adire Audio Brahma. Plenty loud, stupid deep and really clean sounding bass. If you haven't heard a sub with an XBL² motor, I urge you to.
The Adire Tumult, RE XXX and JL audio W7 are all great subwoofers too, but the brahma will always have a place in my heart.
Edit: I appreciate all the feedback! I just thought it would be fun to discuss and reminisce a bit.
American bass XR 10/12/15 I tried sealed and ported
American bass XFL 12 dual ported
Stereo Integrity SQL series 2 12 in sealed
Re Audio SEx 12 v2 10 sealed corner loaded
Of all the setups I’ve heard and had in my own cars I loved the XR 15 in a sealed 2.5 cu ft box even though I’m pretty sure it’s better in the a ported box and my current SQL 12 in a 1 cu ft sealed box playing down to 8hz blows my mind daily. The sound quality is the best I’ve ever heard. I just wish it was louder sometimes because I know the madness of a ported 15 in a 1 series bmw.
Besides that I have 2 SVS sb 3000’s in my living room currently. They get loud enough with enough rumble to make you double check if the earth is moving in scenes where it’s not an obvious explosion or something causing the subwoofers to go off.
Before that I had 2 Klipsch SPL 150. Those are perfect if you don’t have neighbors and a single family otherwise the earthquakes they produce will surely get you evicted.
I had two SB13 Ultras with SB4000 amps. Then I found a deal on two SB16 Ultras. I was very much surprised how much better they are.
Have an IDQ12 in a 1.0 ft sealed box on an Ampere Audio 1200.1. Going to build a new 1.5 ft box to get some additional extension from it.
Rockford fosgate has nice subs the power t2 15s are monsters! Also Memphis mojo 15s are also powerful. And oz audio, smaller brand 2as crazy loud back around 2010.
I never see people rocking Fi Audios, but my buddy had a Fi Audio 12" BTL and that thing was an absolute monster.
I love my Fi Q's. If I had to compare the sound I get from them, I'd compare them to my old W7.
I’m still using my Fi Q from 2009 was a few notches down from the BTL. Love the old UFO magnet subs. By far the best sounding subwoofer I’ve owned. Very musical but gets nasty loud when you push it.
True that I used to have a Fi Q back in 08, now I been rocking a Fi Q neo since 2018 and still going.
Around 1999-2000, I had a Crystal CMP x2 15” that was absolutely ridiculous (ran it with a Fosgate Power 500.2). It wasn’t the best sounding, but it pounded like a pornstar.
Your list is pretty sufficient but everybody forgets about and some have never heard about cadence subs.
Ive never considered or heard a cadence sub that was above average sq I heard these cadence subs in the early 2000s that had a flat looking dustcap that covered the entire cone of the sub they looked like the earthquake adjustable passive radiators they sell now
Currently sitting on 3 Cadence SW8’s planning on doing a built for a 80’s mustang with em
Im looking for my first sub purchase (after 20 years with nothing) and im leaning towards getting one.
I have 2 skar 8s and am thinking about the next subwoofer I should get in the future. I wanna get 2 12s and use all of my trunk space. What are your guys thoughts on the best brands? Sundown,JL,Kicker?
Fi Audio makes subwoofers for every size and power handling you could want, mine has been going strong for 5 years and can take all the abuse I can throw at it
Is your goal SPL or sq? I personally like JL, to me they are a very good medium between SPL and SQ. And they tend to get the low notes better than they’re rating says.
Someone needs to make a post about this. New people aren’t after real sq subs or a real sq setup, that’s just misleading. They want no rattles. And while that’s a part of sq it definitely doesn’t encompass the whole thing. People want spl (whether a little or a lot) and they need to use dampener to get the rattles mostly out. We need to stop asking for spl or sq because 97% of anyone new couldn’t tell actual sq from a decent dampening job.
I agree with most of that. But I remember when I was first getting into car audio when I was 16 I was ALL about SPL. Going to DB drag racing events and such every chance I could. first time I heard a set of 2 Boston Pro 12’s on a 1000w Xtant amp and it completely flipped my view on it. Those are still some of my favorite subs ever.
There is no such thing as "best" because every subwoofer has a different goal. There are definitely brands to stay away from though.
If you want to narrow down what to get, find the max space you are willing to use for the subwoofer(s) and your budget for the system. If you just start trying to buy bigger subwoofers without planning ahead, you are going to be chasing a constantly moving goal post and you will keep spending more and more money chasing it down.
You will need a custom box optimizing the space you have and the subwoofers you choose.
hey, would you mind explaining to me what do you mean by custom box? i have seen the cool expensive subwoofers don t have it, its just the speaker and i stopped myself from getting these as i don t know how to even make a box for it to begin with
A custom box means designing a box around the subwoofer, instead of throwing a subwoofer in a generic box. It would have proper airspace, port area, tuning, and more that are all designed FOR the subwoofer and your goals.
Well said. This was going to be my advice as well. Fanboyism and nuthuggery really out when OP hasn't even stated his goals or budget and people start throwing around brand names.
Buy two Stereo Integrity SQL or two Image Dynamics IDQ.

I’ve always loved really deep bass. I’m looking into a car system and want the hardest hitting subwoofers y’all can think of. Any recommendations?
Yes I have some suggestions if you want the "hardest hitting" (whatever that metric of measurement is) sound system ever...
First, get like $150,000 and buy 40 banks of lithium LTO 50ah, strap that shit to 200,000W RMS of amps and push it into like maybe ten or twelve Orion HCCA's or Alphard Audio AVATARS in a 6th order enclosure built with a steel cage and 50mm MDF face panels and triple baffle... you will need six 420a alternators and eighteen runs of 4/0 guage cabling.
Have fun and show us when it's all built!
Look into DD Audio, especially their American made subs
Sundown, Skar, Deaf Bonce,
Jl audio 13w7ae
Title
Rockford Fosgate, because I'm old and that's what all the cool kids had back in the day.
You misspelled Kicker. Common mistake.
Shout out to MTX.
Kicker subs, rockford amp every time. Still do
High end ($400+) - JL Audio. Sundown.
Mid range ($150-300) - Rockford. Skar.
Budget - Skar.
I used to only fox with JL and Rockford back in 90’s, I’m old. I have recently put system in my Tahoe and I put a skar evl 18 in their factory box. It’s been over a year now and still bangs. I remember when I picked my son up the first time, his eyes got huge with a wtf look on his face lmao…
Loved my 12W6 in 1998. Hate my 10W0 now. I went with an Orion XTR 12, but not happy with it at all. I'm looking for another 10" but want something that sounds amazing with that gut thump with rock and roll. I was thinking a 10W6 or 12W6... Just a single one. Something is just missing from my sub. It's loud, it's hits hard, it's just... not right. Once I had that 12W6, it kind of set the standard. It wasn't super loud, but it was a great sound. I want louder but that same quality.
That 10W0 isn't horrible. Just not great.
My HO 12W6 in my DC Tundra, on 500 watts, can peel paint, while also hitting you square in the chest. Everything from Roddy Ricch, to Van Halen, slaps.
It's true! I have a JL 8" that blows away some cheaper 10"s and 12"s.
The higher tier Skar subs like the VXF series are pretty good actually.
Not sure what prices you are looking at, but the Punch P3 is 219ish on Amazon. The SA 12 is 349. So no.
But I was actually referring to the X series. Those are 600+ and are absolute beasts. Not sure Rockford makes anything that can compete with Sundown in that range.
Dayton Audio! Budget friendly and great SQ
Alpine series x >>>
Getting a new 4runner and excited to start a fresh setup. Had a jeep previously and ran rockford for speakers and subwoofers and loved them. Had memphis way back when and also liked them but didnt have them long enough to have a true opinion. Just wanted to see what everyones preferences are and maybe give me some ideas and what to go with
My guy hooking me up with the box and sub link. What a legend
😉
Kicker
Fosgate
Sundown, kicker are the two I really have experience with. I owned a couple pos skar subs too but those things were such trash. My vote always goes to sundown
Seems sundown is a wave. I’ll have to check em out. I’m thinking single 12”?
How much are you looking to spend?
Digital Design
I've been told that these are some of the better brands PSA, HSU, REL, SVS, Sunfire and Rhythmik. I'm going to be buying used something made in the last 5 years at that price range when it was released. Are there any others I should consider and which brands out of the ones I mentioned are the top of the top?
Edit:
Firstly I'm located in the US. The room I'll be using is a garage with a desk setup in the corner the garage is probably 20-25ft x 20-25ft. I'll usually be the only one listening so I don't need to worry about balancing output for different locations. The sub would be sitting about 3 feet from where I sit. And I think I'm looking for a sealed subwoofer because accuracy is more important than power because making my music sound good is the number on priority I don't watch a whole lot of TV or movies. I do a fair bit of gaming but I don't need to have explosions shake the whole room.
I got a used Martin Logan subwoofer (Dynamo 800X) for under $500, retails currently for $900.
I’ve found used Martin Logan subs are fairly easy to come by for under $400-500, sometimes under $300. I would recommend getting one with built-in DSP, if possible. I love mine very much, no desire to change anything.
I've actually listened to the Martin Logan sub right below the dynamo 800x in the same product line at Best Buy and it sounded amazing so I imagine the 800x sounds even better. I actually messaged a guy about a martin logan dynamo 800x for $550 but he hasn't gotten back to me yet I'm crossing my fingers that he will.
The dynamos can't compete with the above-mentioned brands at these prices. They just aren't that good. I've used a 300 and 800.
To each their own. I’m very happy with mine, and I know plenty of others who are happy with theirs. But I’m sure OP appreciates the difference in perspective.
SVS, HSU, Rhythmik at that price range. REL has priced themselves so high now that they're not a good, cost efficient option anymore (you simply can do better for dollar with the previous three I mentioned).
If used, JL Audio (home gear) or Vandersteen 2Wq subwoofers are great, too.
I think you're on the right track but when it comes to used it can be difficult to find a great deal with the most popular subwoofer brands. At the top of your list I would put SVS, REL, and HSU.
Velodyne and Monolith are two others to add to your list of the top subwoofer brands to consider.
One bit of warning, some of these subwoofers are massive in size. My spouse took some convincing that we needed that giant black tube in the corner of the room when I brought home my first SVS sub.
thanks for the other brand recommendations. I've got some leads on a REL https://rel.net/shop/powered-subwoofers/serie-ht/ht-1003/ this one for 400$, a sunfire https://www.amazon.com/Sunfire-HRS10-10-Resolution-Subwoofer/dp/B002ONGZNC this sub is up for 400$ also and https://rel.net/shop/serie-ti/t7i/ but the guy wants 850$ for a 1000$ new sub so I probably won't end up getting that one though I imagine it sounds fantastic.
Are you looking for a compact sealed subwoofer? Nothing wrong with those but you give up extension and/or output when going that way. What's the size of the room? Is it sealed or open to the rest of the house? Are you focused more on music or HT?
I've got a Sunfire HRS10. I don't think it's better enough than the SVS you've got to bother switching. I'd probably go for a REL instead.
If warranties are transferable, I would think any of the above with a 5 year warranty would be good. In particular, i know SVS subs have a 5 year, bumper to bumper (that's everything including amps).
Tossing in Monoprice Monolith. Seems to be a direct competitor to svs and hsu
Going to be running 4, 8" subs in my truck...was wondering on recommendations for brand of subs...dont want crappy subs...
JL Audio
As far as 8's go, I would go with either DD audio, or the DC Audio 8's personally
Sundown, Gladen, Jl audio or Rockford Fosgate
DD Audio.
Nep audio has some nice stuff you don't see often. Most of their subwoofers are made here in the USA. Same as Adire Audio.
https://tidal.com/playlist/dc14f15a-7f49-4967-a9f3-e0ee043ae9c3 This playlist took about 10 years to make literally. I can easily say these tracks will will test subwoofers the hardest and give them a good run for their money. You can seriously blow subwoofers with these tracks.
I’ll have to check this stuff out! I appreciate the link! Your list is missing some of the most influential stuff tho!
Check out:
Techno: Bass 305:Techno bass (flight 305), techmaster PEB (bassgasum)
For rap: DJ Magic Mike, Spice 1
Those albums are from the 1990’s. The beginning era of bass heads!! They were literally sound engineered for sub frequencies. Bassgasum, I’ll warn you now… it will blow subs easily because of the way it’s designed. Flight 305 is one of my favorite “late night rollin” songs. But for SPL… these albums are INSANE! Check em out 🙂
Again, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this, like actually. ❤️ I know of Beat Dominator as a classic, people still remix "bass can you hear me?" To this day. I'm going to check these out and probably add them
Omg! Beat dominator! I haven’t heard that for YEARS! Thanks for the reminder!
I’ve been looking for the Boston Acoustics frequency testing CD from the 90’s. It was a CD that was handed out and used at many of the IASCA competitions I frequented. It was a mix of jazz, classical and contemporary music. It wasn’t designed for bass. But for music experience… it was unmatched! Listening to that over my quart mids and highs… lanzar 12’s… it felt like it was crushing your skull! It was so great! 😁
Yeah fight 305 is really good Im adding it. That kind of music must have sounded alien space age futuristic in the 90s. I respect all the classics
It really was mind bending at the time! The chills I got the first time I heard that… riding with my boy in his minivan… with a wall with 6 15” jbl’s… Oz mids & tweets. The air that pushed out thru the sunroof hole was like an industrial fan. Mirrors unusable 🤣
I am looking at a sub to go with a pair of Klipsch RP-51Ms. I am looking between SVS, HSU(sold out atm), Klipsch, and Monolithic.

What would be yalls recommendation for a sub around 500 or less? I really want something that goes above and beyond. If spending the 900 on a HSU 15 is going to be worth it, I can try to scrounge up the money to get that. Crutchfield does have the Klipsch Reference R-112SW on sale for 400. I know klipsch subs get some slack, but 400 is a ton better price than paying 1000 after shipping for the HSU. SVS is about 500-800 depending on what you get.

Can anyone give me some advice here that has good experience with these brands or anything else yall can recommend? Thank you in advance.
Rel Subwoofers all day. Ht or Tx series both integrate phenomenally.
Got a TZero MK3 in a small room and I'm already surprised what that small sub adds to 2 channel music.
Oh hey I just up voted you're last post. Really like the setup. And yeah after auditioning Rel subwoofers, changed my world on how well a subwoofer can integrate into a system and make the sound so much fuller. Really want a pair of T/7x for my two channel system, hopefully soon.
Oh I’m a big klipsch fan. Run towers, and bookshelves all throughout my home. Their subs are lacking to say the least.
I would honestly cross Klipsch off my list (have an r-110sw). Upgraded to an SVS PB-2000pro (and eventually a second one) and it’s a night and day difference. And it’s beyond just the size; SVS is in another class. Plus the app is a nice added bonus, not to mention the service you’ll get from SVS.
Will do, their bookshelf’s are phenomenal but I’ll get a dedicated subwoofer brand.
Yeah I have some older RF-3 II’s with RC/RS-3 II’s for my 5.1 and the R-41SA’s for front heights. Pretty pleased for HT use, but considering something different for music. Just can’t decide on what I want! Love the SVS subs though.
RSL speedwoofer 10s. Or whatever SVS you can find discounted on their outlet site
I’m sure the RSL is great but I just can’t get over that it’s a 10 inch driver in a 15-16 inch box, while the SVS is a 12 inch driver in a 14 inch box. I’m probably going to end up going SVS just because I don’t have a ton of floor space.
Do you have any other thoughts on the compare?
You think SVS would sound better than the HSU 15? Big price difference but willing if its worth it.
I have the Monolith. It has been as good as I expected. It is huge and has a complete sound.
As someone who was gone from klipsch to svs.....skip the klipsch.......
