In no particular order...
Ootoro, ohshima, nana San, shunka, sibucho, hanare, momoyama, OMG, San shi go.
I'm from Costa Mesa so I don't have much to say about sushi in south OC but these I've been to and I really enjoy all of them. Some will break the bank while others are more reasonable but I'm a fomo kinda guy so I will go all out with omakase with a nice sake bottle so it's all expensive when I go.
My favorite is sibucho because they purely serve sushi only, and some of their fish is phenomenal... Seriously, not the normal tuna salmon stuff but their mackerel and their baby octopus are crazy good. I miss that place I rarely get to go because it's purely sushi and I have kids and wife who want other Japanese dishes.
I guess I don't judge sushi on salmon, tuna or rolls. I enjoy the more sea tasting fish such as mackerel... If they do that right, they can easily do the rest right.
Good luck happy eating!
I usually goto angotei because of price and location. But I love Ootoro and Hanare is probably the best Sushi I've had.
Ootoro sushi off Michelson. It’s pricey but oh so good!! This is not a place for typical rolls like volcano or spider etc.
I remember going to the private opening of this place way back when(like 2012 or something). They had an exclusive omikase experience for 25 people and it was 20 servings of some of the best damn sushi I have ever had.
So many options… but I’m a fan of ETC Etera in Newport. Next to the Ayers hotel. Delicious
I ate at the bomb ass Thai place next door and saw the menu. Wasn't seeing any sea bream or fatty Toro.
What do you get there?

San Shi Go took the spot where Okura Sushi used to be on PCH and Thalia.
I never been there myself but I worked next door to a place called Ohshima. They do omakase and always have huge lines on weekends.
I just found out about this sushi place, i was getting Holdaak chicken next door for lunch, and i saw a huge line outside, at first i was annoyed i would have to stand in line, but realized it was for a different place, and it turned out to be Oshima. You wouldnt except anything fancy from the outside perspective, but looks traditional inside.
Third this...Ohshima had some of the best blue fin tuna I've ever tasted.
This is my favorite. Seared black cod and (if in season) fois grais nigiri are the best.
Hell yeah thank you
The service is appalling though. You have to be shouting (almost) for your food.
My personal favorite is San Shi Go. They have a great sake selection and their omakase is always great.
Hana re is very highly rated but I found it underwhelming.
Maybe this has been answered before and if so I’m sorry in advance. If so don’t hate me!
I’m new to the area and looking for somewhere to get nigiri (less into rolls).
Also side question - any good local wing shops?
five good spots. hasingo wins on price and selection. oshima is tradtional sushi- its awesome! otoro similar to oshima more pricey : hammamori good quality : shunka not the best not the worst
Ohshima seems to be the consensus as top rated. Will check out the others too
Ohshima in Orange. They even specifically tell you that they don't do American style rolls. Like at all. Their Omakase (chef's choice) is amazing, though I'm not sure if they offer it these days with Covid-19 and all. If you pick only one thing from their menu, make sure it's the cherry salmon.
Ikko in Costa Mesa does the same (informing you via a sign outside that they do not do American style sushi)
Oh right. Totally forgot about that place. Second only Ohshima in my opinion. Great omakase as well.
Went to this place on a date with a psycho without knowing how expensive it was. Best sushi I've ever had, but I thought I was gonna be decapitated in the car later when I saw the bill.
I recommend these three options:
Japanese people choice: https://www.ootorosushi.com/
Best value: https://www.taikooc.com/
When you fasted all day aka AYCE: https://www.sushibombfullerton.com/
For the you could give https://www.cravekrave.com/ a try. Underratedly BIG wings, crunchy, sweet, and juicy. It ain't the best but it's good to try.
Ohshima in Orange is outstanding and they're open for take-out.
Hanare is one of only two restaurants in OC with a Michelin star
I will also personally vouch for NaNa San as well
Edit: apparently Hanare is temporarily closed
I thought Hana re is doing take out right now and also looking into patio dining?
We've eaten there once for their omakase and also did one take out meal during COVID.
Will add Hanare to the list of things to check out once they open up. Thanks!
Awesome thanks for the suggestions!
I can vouch for sushi bomb in Fullerton. Their AYCE is amongst the best and I've been all over LA,.OC, and SB county is search for the best value, but also quality AYCE sushi
Hi there! I'm in the search for the best sushi in Orange County. I moved back after six years of living out of state, so need an update on the best spots in town. My favorite spot is Ootoro in Irvine. I've raved about it the past few years I came back to visit. I just found out i...
Hana Re was a cool experience. It is the only sushi restaurant in OC that actually has a Michelin star. Ordered the Omakase. Pretty solid. I have had a few other Omakase experiences that were slightly better but it is still top 5.
Not sure what's up with Covid though, I went in 2019.
https://guide.michelin.com/us/en/california/us-costa-mesa/restaurant/hana-re
Ohshima is a better value Omakase located in Orange. But Hana Re is cool for the unique experience factor. Ohshima I have repeated on several occasions. Would be my area go-to at this point.
Any other Omakase spots you recommend?
For a non omakase spot, I like Sushi Koto in HB. It is very lowkey, but the quality is great. This place is more known for their chirashi bowls.
One of my favorite omakase dinners of all time in CA was at Sushi Ota down south near La Jolla. They brought out this live shrimp that was still moving. Fantastic presentation on every single dish. This was in 2018 so not sure how covid has affected the experience.

The most recent Omakase I tried here in OC was Shunka. It wasn't extremely special but the outside covid dining was solid so the experience was good.
Completely agree. I've done Hana Re once, but it's hard to repeat at the price point. But Ohshima is really in the sweet spot between price and quality.
Shunka - current fav midtier omakase. Was great before pandemic for omakase
Murasaki - hidden gem, rice can be too warm while fish is too cold, but decent set omakase (good price, too)
Ootoro - overpriced for what you get. Charging LA Sushi Zo tier prices while being no better than midtier. Fancy environment though, good for business stuff. Otherwise would not recommend because it's not worth the cost.
Hana Re - Michelin star, only had it to-go and it was meh. Would go back to try once everything opens though, just in case
Ohshima - well reviewed
OMG Omakase - More like kaiseki omakase, not strictly sushi, but still good
Nana-san used to be good and my favorite place, but it's been hit or miss for the past two or three years. Would still be midtier, maybe worth a try at the bar.
If you really want good sushi though, I can't recommend Shunji, Sushi Zo, Ginza, Tsujita, Shin, Q in LA enough.
You know your sushi!
I would add Morihiro, and Kaneyoshi for new LA sushi spots.
In OC I like Shibucho. I want to try Sushi ii, Osaka style sushi specialist. I love Battera sushi
Thank you :)! & thank you for the additional recommendations. I'll add them to my list of places to try; I'm always looking for solid sushi spots.
Woooo very nice list! Thanks for writing this out. I’m a huge fan of omakase. What’s your favorite omakase nearby??
There's a hidden gem in Costa Mesa called Murasaki. Small place in a random office plaza, but I consider them one of the best in OC. They do omakase too.
I also recommend them, sashimi is on another level.
we love Shunka on 17th street in Costa Mesa!
Really depends on the type of sushi you’re trying to eat.
If you’re going more authentic, my go-to is Nana San in Newport.
Sushi on Fire in Huntington Beach has a great atmosphere and fun vibe! I recommend the Bird Roll, garlic edamame, and soft shell crab roll! Hope this helps!
Hashigo or Matsu
If you goto Matsu sit in the front lounge at the half octagon table. Order the Scorpion Bowl and Lobster Tail appetizer.
My friend recommends me eating at ohshima sushi because she told me the fish over there is really fresh. I was just wondering if anyone had other suggestions? I liked aburi sushi in the buena park.
Sushi Bear in Tustin, Hands down the best fish and price as well :)
We had Sushi Bear in Tustin last weekend. It was super good. Huge rolls, really tasty, and not too expensive. Definitely would recommend!
I would recommend waiting until you can dine in at Ohshima because it's such a great experience especially for your first time, also not sure if the quality will be the same to-go.
Sushi Bear and Shunka are good for takeout, Sake 2 Me isn't as high quality but they're having 50% off all sushi and rolls starting today.
Agreed. Ohshima is a dining experience. Wait for reopening.
Matsu in Huntington Beach is pretty good and I feel the size of food you get is great for it's price!
Oshima is one of the best in OC, IMO, because of their Omakase. But don’t know what they’re take-out options are like. Do they stick with just the standard fish? Or do they include the higher MP options?
Agree. Oshima is my secret spot. There is no where in OC that is better. Not sushi bear or any of the other listed below.
What is the best take out sushi deal in the northeast side of Orange County at the moment?
If you got money to blow then Ohshima in Orange. They have a regular a la carte menu but they’re more renowned for their omakase, where the chef makes the food in front of you one at a time. Obviously with COVID that’s not an option at the moment but you can still order the omakase dishes without the presentation. Their cheapest option is $50 for 10 pieces but it’s probably the most high quality sushi you can buy around here.
Better than Hanare? I got their omakase takeout and was honestly disappointed.
I feel like omakase just didn’t hit the same unless you eat it right at the sushi bar. Takeout makes it lose half the appeal.
Check out Sushi Damu in Tustin. They usually have 50% off rolls when you order online and the quality is pretty good.
+1 for Sushi Damu. Best sushi in the north-ish OC area IMO.
Sushi damus bomb, i think they stopped doing that though. I think its 30% off now. That 50% off was going on for like 8 months.
Sake 2 Me near Tustin / Santa Ana is still doing half off cut rolls and hand rolls. I have done it a few times since the start of the pandemic and it's good quality fish and a lot of food.
You're gonna start a war comin round asking questions like that lol!
Me and my GF are not planning to go out on Valentine's, so we decided on having a nice dinner at home. Sushi is our happy food, so just doing that. I do want to get a generous amount to make it a bit more special\different.
We have a couple places we like, but would be open to t...
Wasa Sushi Teppan in Newport Beach (1344 Bison Ave, Newport Beach). I had dinner with few friends and sushi was excellent and very fresh. No sure your budget but I heard it was a bit higher price (one of our friends treated us so I was not sure the final bill). The portion was not big thou. so you might want to double down on the orders if you might want to.
I’ve delivered from RA Sushi and it’s solid
Sushi Wasabi in Tustin. Delicious blue crab hand rolls.
Hi, I just moved to Irvine from San Diego, and was wondering where the best omakase options in Orange County are.
If you want a traditional omakase Ohshima in Orange is by far the best. If you just want super delicious high quality sushi as a set, order lunch from Shari Nori. They offer sushi boxes for pickup from 4th street market in Santa Ana. Easily the best quality to value ratio around. Super high quality fish, great selection in each box, and support a small business. You'll pay half as much for the same quality as a high end sushi restaurant. The chef behind it left his job at Nobu at the start of COVID and started Shari Nori as a takeout only business. Ended up working out really well.
I've had the take out from Shari Nori, it's very very good, especially at that price point. Highly recommended! The chef is a really nice guy :) Happy to support his business https://i.imgur.com/enwuN6R.jpg the bottom box is $56.
I enjoy https://www.yelp.com/biz/sushi-murasaki-santa-ana
Their Omakase is more nigiri based, and less appetizers / presentation based.
My favorite is Omakase by Gino in Santa Ana. It’s pricey, but definitely my fav:
https://www.ocweekly.com/eat-this-and-drink-this-now-omg-omakase-by-gino/
https://www.yelp.com/reservations/omg-omakase-by-gino-santa-ana
I think the this the most favorite place in all of Oc. Everyone end their mama love this place
Ohshima is the best in my opinion! Turned me onto sea bream and amberjack
best sushi in orange county
Here are a few key considerations
Quality of Fish: Look for a sushi restaurant that uses high-quality, fresh fish. The best sushi restaurants often have relationships with local fish markets to ensure the fish is of the highest quality.
Sushi Rice: The rice is just as important as the fish in sushi. Look for a restaurant that uses high-quality sushi rice that is properly seasoned.
Variety and Creativity: A good sushi restaurant should offer a variety of sushi rolls and sashimi options. Look for a restaurant that also offers creative and unique rolls that showcase the chef's skills.
Atmosphere and Service: The atmosphere of the restaurant and the quality of service can greatly impact your dining experience. Look for a restaurant with a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, and attentive and knowledgeable servers.
Recommendation: Orange County has many great sushi restaurants, but one of the best is Sushi Noguchi in Yorba Linda. Chef Hiro Noguchi is known for his exceptional sushi skills and attention to detail. The restaurant offers a variety of traditional and creative sushi rolls, as well as sashimi and omakase options. The atmosphere is elegant and intimate, and the service is attentive and knowledgeable. It's important to note that Sushi Noguchi is on the pricier side, but the quality of the food and dining experience is worth it.
