What Redditors are Saying

Best Sustainable Athletic Wear Brands

TL;DR

  • Girlfriend Collective and Patagonia are popular choices for sustainable athletic wear.
  • Other recommended brands include Reprise, Cotopaxi, and Outlier.

Popular Sustainable Brands

Girlfriend Collective is frequently mentioned as a top choice for sustainable activewear. They are known for their ethical production practices and use of recycled materials [1], [4]. Patagonia also receives praise for its commitment to sustainability, offering products made from recycled materials like plastic bottles and fabric scraps [5:3].

Emerging and Lesser-Known Brands

Several emerging brands are gaining attention for their sustainable practices. Tame the Bull, a Dutch brand, focuses on ethical production using recycled fibers [1:2]. Reprise is another brand aiming to eliminate polyester from workout wear [1:3]. Additionally, Reclaim Apparel uses lyocell and water-based dyes, plants a tree for every item sold, and donates to mental health charities [4:1].

Organic Material Options

For those seeking athletic wear made from organic materials, brands like Mate the Label, Jungmaven, and Maggie's Organics have been recommended [3]. Lezat offers organic cotton leggings with minimal synthetic material for stretch [3:5]. While fully plastic-free options are rare due to the need for stretch materials, these brands come close.

Athleisure Choices

Outlier is noted for its high-end athleisure wear, with a focus on reducing shipping waste [5:1]. Reigning Champ and Ryu are also mentioned as better alternatives compared to mainstream brands like Nike or Adidas, though their sustainability credentials may not be as strong [5:2].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

While many brands claim sustainability, it's important to critically evaluate what this means. The term "sustainable" can vary widely in definition and application, so researching each brand’s practices is crucial [5:5], [5:6]. Second-hand shopping remains one of the most sustainable options, as it reduces demand for new production [5].

Tame the Bull. A Dutch brand committed to ethical production in Portugal and using recycled fibers.

Repriseactivewear.com is a brand I supported from their Kickstarter days and I think they are only going to keep improving - trying to eliminate polyester (plastic) from the workout wear industry..

thanks for sharing! i was gonna say girlfriend collective but you beat me to the punch haha. i also love adidas and reebok. they’re mainstream so not sure how sustainable they could be but they both have pretty high ratings on good for you. otherwise i’m sticking to finding my athletic clothing in consignment. i can easily find brands like lululemon for like $20 and i’m not adding to the clothing cycle. for shoes though i can’t buy second hand unless they’re nwt because it’s dangerous to run on shoes they have a certain amount of mileage on them.

Athletic Wear made from Organic Materials?

Posted by sapphire_96 · in r/ethicalfashion · 1 month ago

Hello! Does anyone have recommendations for athletic wear made (or mostly made) without synthetic materials? I’m specifically looking for biker shorts with pockets and tanks (think Lululemon Align tank). I’ve stumbled across Mate the Label, but it seems a lot of people have issues with the quality? I’ve also found Jungmaven, Happy Earth and Maggie’s Organics—has anyone purchased these brands and what has been your experience? Any other brands you recommend? Thank youuu :)

P.S. happy to post a master list later on to help others find plastic free/low plastic workout clothes!

I have socks from Maggie's that are excellent but haven't tried their leggings yet.

And I second the Pact recommendation! I don't love how their athletic wear fits me personally, but they're high quality and I own a lot of their other products.

While not biker shorts, I went on a deep dive into organic workout leggings and compared a lot of those brands on a blogpost so maybe it might be helpful?

I haven’t come across any workout leggings that are truly 100% plastic-free (most activewear needs at least a little spandex for stretch), but Lezat makes organic cotton leggings that come pretty close mostly cotton with just a small amount of stretch material. They feel way more natural and breathable than full polyester/nylon ones.

Most of my lounge and active wear are from Mate. Haven't bought any since '23 so can't speak to current quality, but all pieces I've bought are still in rotation. They take a lot of abuse and are machined washed and dried after every wear. I really hope the quality isn't as bad as they say because I'm planning on some new purchases toward the end of the year or early next year...

Maggie's is also good (or they were - again haven't bought from them in a while).

Does anybody know any good sustainable gym wear brands? I love to go to the gym but find that places like gymshark and other popular brands have really bad workplace/ environmental practices. Girlfriend is my go to rn, but they’re sold out a lot and don’t have a ton of color options!

www.reclaim-apparel.com

It’s a clothing brand I launched a few months ago that’s been a couple of years in the making. All items are 100% lyocel, manufactured in Portugal and only uses water based dyes. We plant a tree for every item sold via One Tree Planter and donate a portion of the revenue from each sale to Calm, a mental healthy charity.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask away.

Putting “sustainable” in quotes is right because there is no set definition of the term. You can throw it around because it’s practically meaningless.

My gut feeling is that sustainability is a marketing weapon by mid level brands going after the biggest players. It is hard to define. Are synthetics sustainable? Are natural fibers good or bad? Are fashions which often change good? If we consume less what about the sustainability of the livelihoods of all those employed in the clothing and shoe industry? I don't have any answers, just thoughts.

their futuredarts // strongdarts have a heavy athleisure vibe to me

Abe (one of the co-founders) is a redditor and has been starting a conversation about reducing shipping waste lately.

They probably can't compare to patagonia on the sustainability front, but they definitely have stuff that falls in the high end athleisure area.

Vegan (or cruelty free) athletic clothing brand?

Posted by VeGAINZ15 · in r/vegan · 6 months ago

Hey everyone! Anyone have any recommendations for a vegan athletic clothes brand or animal friendly brand? I have the big brands like under Armour and Nike, but obviously they’re not a vegan brand lol

Company doesn’t have to say vegan in the title or brand just a company represents the cruelty free lifestyle that we represent :-)

TIA!

vegan gym is one. There's others in r/veganknowledge for the vegan online stores. I just never got around to color coding each type - so you'd have to do some digging around, but I placed more than a couple in there. (if someone helps me with the color coding - then I can pull them out a lot more easily!!).

Athleta is a somewhat sustainable activewear brand, they’re a certified B Corp, however they’re owned by the Gap brand and according to the Good On You app “it’s a start.” They use recycled materials sometimes, try to use less water, etc, but I still see them as a bit of a fast fashion brand. However, I have quite a few pieces from them and I love them.

Girlfriend Collective has leggings, shorts, sports bras, and I think now dresses and underwear. I have a pair of biker shorts, leggings, and a bra from them. They are made out of recycled water bottles and they send you a wash bag to prevent micro plastics from getting in the water stream. While I like their pieces, the fabric is not quite as stretchy as most leggings, so despite their website saying to size down for compression if you’re between sizes, I recommend sizing up.

Someone else mentioned Patagonia and I honestly think they’re the best and most reliable. If you look at their website they are extremely transparent. Every item includes details on where it’s made, the fabric, the impact, etc. They also have a website called Worn Wear that sells used Patagonia items but the styles can be very outdated.

Yes!! It’s like a guppy bag, since our clothes are made of micro plastic fibers that go into the water stream when we wash! I use it for all my leggings and as many of my polyester clothes as I can!

Completely agree with the suggestions made in the comments! Things like shopping secondhand and even swapping can be incredible.

If you’re looking for specific brands, I’d recommend the likes of Patagonia, Pact, Girlfriend Collective & I’ve heard TALA is good but do used ‘good to know’ as a way to filter through any greenwashing

I think that doesn’t address the microplastic waste problem, though. I could be wrong about how long “performance” fabrics shed plastics.

2 upvotes on reddit
livsndesigns · 3 years ago

FWIW the vast majority of micro plastics from textiles come from high-pile fabrics like fleece jackets and blankets. A poly or nylon pair of workout shorts isn’t really shedding fibers in the wash, which is a big part of why they last so long.

0 upvotes on reddit
H
HumbleFreedom · 3 years ago

To combine my two favorite answers: Secondhand Patagonia clothing.

Patagonia is one of the most sustainable and accountable clothing brands out there (not perfect, but moving in the right direction), they sell used clothing on their website, they are high quality, and they will fix worn clothes for free (assuming they are not totally shredded).

Short of that, most secondhand stores have TONS of workout clothes, especially for women.

You can filter our directory by Activewear to find a bunch of great brands.

Sustainable fashion is all about making better choices, be that using what you have, repairing it, thrifting, swapping, or supporting more sustainable brands. These are all important parts of the solution and it's all about better choices, not perfect choices.

Best sustainable athletic wear brands

Key Considerations for Sustainable Athletic Wear:

  1. Materials: Look for brands that use eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, recycled polyester, Tencel, or hemp. These materials have a lower environmental impact.

  2. Production Practices: Brands that prioritize ethical manufacturing processes, fair labor practices, and reduced carbon footprints are more sustainable.

  3. Durability: Choose high-quality products that are designed to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

  4. Transparency: Brands that are open about their sourcing, production processes, and sustainability goals tend to be more trustworthy.

  5. Certifications: Look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OEKO-TEX, or Fair Trade, which indicate adherence to sustainable practices.

Top Sustainable Athletic Wear Brands:

  1. Patagonia: Known for its commitment to environmental responsibility, Patagonia uses recycled materials and promotes fair labor practices.

  2. Allbirds: While primarily known for shoes, Allbirds also offers sustainable activewear made from natural materials like merino wool and eucalyptus tree fibers.

  3. Girlfriend Collective: This brand focuses on inclusivity and sustainability, using recycled materials to create stylish and functional activewear.

  4. Nike's Move to Zero: Nike is making strides towards sustainability with its Move to Zero initiative, which includes using recycled materials in their products.

  5. Lululemon's Like New Program: Lululemon offers a resale program for gently used items, promoting a circular economy while maintaining high-quality standards.

Recommendation: When choosing sustainable athletic wear, consider your specific needs (e.g., type of activity, fit, style) and prioritize brands that align with your values. Investing in a few high-quality pieces from these brands can make a positive impact on the environment while supporting ethical practices.
