Best Tattoo Artists in Korea

TL;DR

  • Seoul Ink and Pittkkm in Hongdae for high-quality work [2:1]
  • Dead Flower and Chimhwawon Studio in Busan for darker themed tattoos [1:2]
  • Yopickles Inked Korea Facebook group for Itaewon recommendations [5:1]

Seoul Area

In Seoul, several artists and studios are highly recommended. Seoul Ink is a popular choice, known for its reputable artists [2]. Pittkkm, located in the Hongdae area, is noted for his amazing work and English-speaking ability, though he can be expensive and difficult to book [2:1]. Other notable mentions include Lighthouse, Allday, Kodzunak, Mizangwon, and 3 Layer Studio, which offer a variety of styles [2:2].

Busan Area

For those in Busan, Dead Flower is a highly regarded tattoo artist specializing in darker themes [1:2]. He works at Chimhwawon Studio, where many talented artists are available [1:2]. Horitatsu_kj is another artist worth checking out in Busan [1:4].

Itaewon Area

If you're looking for tattoo artists in Itaewon, the Yopickles Inked Korea Facebook group is a good resource for recommendations [5:1]. Moon Blue Ink is praised for its talented artists [5:2], and Osstattoostudio on Instagram is another option [5:3].

Additional Recommendations

For unique styles, consider artists like Gara_tattooer and 47volt for black and white work, or Kime.shadow for handpoke pointillism [2:4]. Chakdoblxck is known for her design work with bands and offers a distinctive style [2:5]. For microblading and eyebrow tattoos, MIE BEAUTY LAB and Cottony Studio are recommended [4:2][4:3].

Finding Artists

Most tattoo artists in Korea operate through Instagram, where you can view their portfolios and contact them for appointments [3:5]. Exploring related tags and following artists can lead to discovering more talent in the area.

ORIGINAL POST

Hello, I'll be in Busan for a few days and am looking to get tattooed there. Anyone got recommendations for tattoo artists there? Not looking for a specific style or anything, I'm open for most things, most of my tattoos are black/white and a bit darker themed though, so preferably not something too colorful and kitchy. Thanks in advance. :)

This is a really good tattooist! If he’s not available, he works at this studio where many talented artists work:

There's a considerable amount of good korean tattoo artists, but this really is a matter of style. If you specify what tattoos you're looking for, that would make the search easier. If you are unsure, lighthouse, allday, kodzunak, mizangwon and 3 layer studio are a few that come to mind (there are other artists not associated with big studios that are worth checking out too, though)

Hmm, there are quite a few that work with b&w, not sure about that + minimalism, but to name a few: @gara_tattooer, @47volt are two light house artist that use b&w strongly. If you are into handpoke (pointillism), @kime.shadow from the same studio. @zihwa_tattooer from another studio, but she mostly does floral work (if that's your thing). A style that isnt necessarily popular is the "ignorant style" of @black_fink, which uses a lot of contrast. @sameblackewhite used to do b&w mimimalist stuff but im not sure whether he retired or not. @ildo_tattoo does some pretty intense stuff, @zeal_tattoo for micro, @tattooist_hwi for very textured stuff. @oozy_tattoo is good at everything, @micotattoo for mandalas (more angular stuff?), she also does some b&w

Look on IG @pittkkm he’s in the Hongdae area. You only get the address once you pay a deposit. His work is amazing. He does speak English. Apparently he’s hard to get in and a bit expensive. He’s got a post up about bookings for Aug & Sept.

If his big tattoos are too expensive, he also does clouds. @pitta_cloud I opted for a cloud and then a small design.

Pick based on the sort of style you want. One decent place to browse is here. Don't feel the need to solicit advice from normal people, of which there are many in this subreddit.

It’s still a very counterculture thing. You’ll see a fair amount of women and men with small stick and poke pieces, but larger and more serious pieces are still fairly uncommon. You can see tattoos more frequently if you go to certain areas like Itaewon in Seoul, or anywhere with a sizeable artist/free spirit neighborhood presence.

i have seen more face tattoos during two years in itaewon than I have everywhere else in my life combined haha. With only one exception, all of these people were Koreans. I feel like when Koreans get into something they go HARD right away... It was interesting to observe

I got my sleeve done at the same shop. Mostly westerners in there but definitely koreans as well. One korean girl had her mom there while she got a wrist tattoo. It's still illegal as it's always been, and the door is locked until someone lets you in but i definitely think it's more socially acceptable than the 90s or 2000s

It’s not illegal to get a tattoo but it’s illegal to tattoo without a medical license. A lot of Koreans have tattoos it’s just strategically hidden haha I hear if you go to Caribbean Bay in the summer you’ll see everyone has a tattoo.

"Tattoo" isn't illegal. It's just tattoo is considered medical procedure and artists without medical license are technically practicing medicine without license - so "practicing medicine without license" is illegal. Not "tattoo" per se.

I got a tattoo in Korea about 10 years ago and I could only get the location of the shop by referral and it was disguised as a kimbop shop on the outside. Door locked and you had to be let in.

There's tattoo, and then there's tattoo. Tattoos are much more socially acceptable. If you want to tattoo a cute butterfly on your shoulder, you'll most likely be fine. Old people don't like it but they don't like most of what young people do anyway. But certain kinds of tattoos will bring negative reactions from most Koreans even if they're mostly accepting of tattoos. Traditionally, tattoos of dragons, tigers, 도깨비 (demon/monsters) and carp, primarily in blue and red colors were associated with organized crime/조폭 (조직폭력배).

They're not limited to real gangs these days but people who get them don't really do tattoo lovers any favors. They're called 문신돼지충 (tattoo pigs) and they use the residual fears of tattoos to intimidate people despite having no real connections with actual organized crime gangs. If you see two guys arguing and one of them suddenly take off his shirts and display his tattoos, he's mostly likely a 문신돼지 fraud.

You'll be expected to cover your tattoos in most professional and educational settings, regardless of your tattoos.

Went to one of the nicest hotels in Busan last weekend, and they asked me to cover up my tattoos. If I went directly into the pool outside, they might not have noticed. It was a first for me honestly, I've never been asked to cover up any tattoos anywhere in a hotel before.

Compared to the US, prices here seem to be about 25%-30% less, and half what you might pay in Taipei or Japan for comparable quality. However, perhaps due to the semi-underground and unregulated nature of tattooing in Korea, I've seen a lot of poorly executed and poorly healed tattoos here, usually small blackwork pieces on young people.

That being said, there are plenty of excellent established artists who do world-class work. I follow a bunch and have several pieces planned for the coming year.

If you have money to travel, you probably have a few hundred dollars for a tattoo. There's little harm in reaching out to artists whose portfolio is in the style you like. Don't try to iterate a detailed design over KakaoTalk or DM - ask a few preliminary questions and ask to book a consultation meeting for when you arrive.

I'll take this opportunity to ask about the legality of tattooing in Korea. To me it's illegal, isn't it ?

2 upvotes on reddit

Not illegal. It's just that the only people who are legally allowed to give tattoos are doctors and doctors don't tend to become tattoo artists. Also, the law is rarely enforced.

Best tattoo artists in Korea

Key Considerations for Finding the Best Tattoo Artists in Korea:

  1. Style Specialization: Different artists specialize in various styles (e.g., traditional, realism, watercolor, neo-traditional). Identify what style you prefer and look for artists known for that.

  2. Portfolio Review: Always check the artist's portfolio to assess their skill level and the quality of their work. Look for consistency and attention to detail.

  3. Hygiene Standards: Ensure the studio follows strict hygiene practices. A clean environment and proper sterilization of equipment are crucial for safety.

  4. Client Reviews: Read reviews and testimonials from previous clients to gauge their experiences. Positive feedback can indicate a reliable artist.

  5. Consultation Availability: A good artist will offer a consultation to discuss your ideas, provide suggestions, and ensure you feel comfortable before the tattooing process begins.

Recommended Tattoo Artists in Korea:

  • Kang Jae-woo (Kang Tattoo): Known for intricate line work and detailed designs, especially in realism and illustrative styles.

  • Myeong Jin (Myeong Jin Tattoo): Specializes in traditional Korean tattoos and has a strong reputation for cultural designs.

  • Soo Jin (Soo Jin Tattoo): Renowned for her watercolor tattoos and vibrant colors, she has a unique artistic approach.

  • Dae Hyun (Dae Hyun Tattoo): Offers a mix of styles, including neo-traditional and blackwork, with a focus on custom designs.

Takeaway: Researching and visiting studios can help you find the right artist for your vision. Don't hesitate to reach out for consultations to ensure you feel comfortable with your choice.
