TL;DR
El Tesoro
El Tesoro is frequently mentioned as a benchmark for quality tequila. It is praised for its authentic taste and is often the starting point for many tequila enthusiasts [1:1]. The El Tesoro Reposado, in particular, has been highlighted as an excellent introduction to high-quality tequila
[2:2].
Fortaleza
Fortaleza is another highly recommended brand, known for its additive-free tequilas. It's particularly noted for its Still Strength expression, which has converted many into fans of pure tequila [1:6]. Despite its popularity and hype, it remains a favorite among aficionados
[1:11].
G4
G4 is celebrated for its balance of well water and rainwater, delivering a unique flavor profile. It’s often compared favorably to other top brands like El Tesoro and Fortaleza [2:3]. While some debate its supremacy, it consistently ranks high among tequila lovers
[1:5].
Ocho and Tapatio
Both Ocho and Tapatio are frequently cited as exceptional choices. Ocho is noted for its mineral-rich flavor, while Tapatio offers a more affordable yet high-quality option [1:3]
[1:4].
For those with no budget constraints, options like Tear of Llorona XA, Tapatio Excelencia, and Cascahuin 7x10 are suggested as some of the best available [3:4]. These selections are often harder to find but provide a unique tasting experience.
Tres Agaves
Tres Agaves is a solid choice for those seeking organic and additive-free tequila at a reasonable price, typically around $30 [5:2].
Cimmaron
Cimmaron is praised for being an excellent value, offering a liter of blanco for about $30, making it a popular choice for home bars [5:3].
Lalo and Arette
Lalo is another favorite for budget-conscious buyers, with connections sometimes allowing bulk purchases at even lower prices [5:4]. Arette also receives mentions as a good budget option
[5:6].
When choosing tequila, personal taste plays a significant role. Some prefer the unaged purity of Blanco tequilas, while others enjoy the complexity that comes with aging in Reposados or Añejos [3:1]. Availability can also affect choice, as some high-end options may be difficult to find in certain regions
[4:2].
I have a love affair with El Tesoro. It was my first foray into the greater world of real tequila. Since then, I've discovered many amazing, and better pours, but El Tesoro remains my true love. I would say that if you don't like El Tesoro, you simply don't actually like tequila. Obviously my biasses are clear, but it got me thinking...
Do you have an ultimate tequila? A brand that is your favorite, your first, or just so solid that you feel it is an ultimate good.
For me it was Fortaleza that got me into additive free tequila. Once I tasted the Still strength I knew I was going down the rabbit hole. Since then I've had better tequila but that pour got me hooked.
Fortaleza SS was the first tequila I had that I liked better than El Tesoro. Truly, truly a special pour.
Their winters blend is truly a league of its own. The rest are incredible as well. Also a huge fan of Fortaleza even with their insane current hype.
You are not wrong about El Tesoro. Its a benchmark for me. If its better than El Tesoro its damn good! I like Ocho and Sieta Leguas a lot. Tapatio is great too. Hard to pick one favorite.
These are the 4 that have really knocked my socks off as a new tequila drinker. Tapatio is my affordable bottle compared to the others so I’ve been drinking it often. But I think Ocho is my favorite. Have only found El Tesoro a few times and it was super expensive so haven’t had it much.
I'd probably feel the same about any of those if they were my first. Textbook, dictionary definition of good tequila each one.
Ocho is the tequila that radically changed my tequila preference. I want rocks and cactus and minerals. Bingo!
But when I’m sipping on Rey Sol (very rare occasion) I wonder if it can get any better.
I used to think the same about El Tesoro…until I tried G4. G4 is simply the best, there’s literally zero debate.
I'll debate! G4 is great but it's not even my favorite from 1579. The Madera, on the other hand, is possibly top 5 Blancos I've had. But respect for the passion!
I like the regular Volans blanco better than g4.
My palette currently is just obsessed with 1123. I can’t get enough of any of them. The regular square bottle, the cascahuin hp, Lágrimas. Everything I’ve had from 1123 has had a special note of deliciousness that I don’t get from any other brand. Fortaleza is the brand that went all bourbon crazy. But I think the NOM that truly deserves a cult following is 1123 (I do not want it to go crazy at all, but unlike Fortaleza I think cascahuin, to me, is head and shoulders above the pack.
Edit: punctuation
No one cares what this sub thinks. It’s the YouTube and instagram “celebrities” that drive the Fortaleza hype. As long as they don’t start hyping up cascahuin I think it’s safe
Edit: if anyone does care what this sub thinks, actually Fortaleza is the best and I’m just mad I can’t find it and I’m coping by pretending 1123 is the best but really I would pay $1000 for a taste for the Fortaleza and I want to buy 16 bottles of it and never open any of them. /s
I'm a novice to tequila and wanted to get your opinion on what you think it's the best brand of tequila and why. Thanks in advance.
El Tesoro
El Tesoro Repos was the first good tequila I ever had, served to me by Julio Bermejo at Tommy's Mexican Restaurant. I still have one of his legendary margaritas made with ET Repos on just about every visit.
Is this the SF location? I'm planning a trip out to SF in early February.
That's a pretty loaded question, and is going to depend on your personal tastes.
Otherwise, it's G4.
I've never had G4 - Are you guys referring to any particular aging (blanco, anejo, reposado), or are they all good?
Thx!
Every single tequila that Felipe makes is brilliant. Every. Single. One. :)
There is G4, Pasote, and Terralta (there is also Arte de Nom 1579, but it is harder to come by these days).
Pasote-- licensed by Charbay importers, IIRC, and is very close to G4, but aged in a different kind of wood (that I don't remember).
Terralta -- 100% deep well water.
G4 -- Balance of well water and rain water.
You can't go wrong with any of the G4's. If you want to compare the different labels from the same distillery, I always lean to the reposado (or blanco).
Fortaleza, G4 / Terralta / Pasote, El Tesoro / Tapatio / Ocho, Tequila Siete Leguas.
Those four distilleries produce pretty much just those products and nothing else. They are widely considered to be the best in the business.
There are certainly other products and distilleries that are fantastic (t1, for example), but those four stand out (internationally, anyway-- there are a handful of Mexico distribution only distilleries that are apparently quite amazing that I really want to try).
This guy is on the money! My votes go to Fortaleza and Ocho. Ooooh AND Tapatio.
All stellar recommendations and I would add the Fuenteseca, Cimarron as well, especially for professional applications.
I’m a Siete Leguas guy, but I think it depends greatly on where your palate is.
Casa Noble, Siete Leguas and Fortaleza.
I won a bet with a fairly wealthy friend of mine for ANY bottle of liquor...winner chooses, loser buys, we both drink it. I've decided on tequila. So what is the absolute best tequila, money is no object.
The only caveat is it must be something he can actually find in the greater LA area.
EDIT: I tend to like Reposado
El Tesoro 85th anniversary, Fuenteseca cosecha 2013
El Tesoro 70th
Agreed, top 3 tequila for me
Tapatio excelencia
Do you really think that’s the best tequila that money can buy?
Wow, can you find it in LA? If so, how much, and I’ll look for it next time I visit.
Tear of llorona XA, Tapatio Excelencia, Cascahuin 7x10, Cascahuin XA, G4 7 year XA. Just a few that come to mind since your buddy has deep pockets lol
Curious where you can find Excelencia in LA and about how much?
I may have spoken untruthfully here my apologies, I haven't seen excelencia in LA for a while. But there are a few liquor stores that do carry some special stuff and I'm sure would be willing to find you a bottle out here. Showcase in Pasadena, Encino liquor, Ladins are a few spots that carry some special stuff.
One of the best blanco I’ve tasted heavily slept on
It’s easy to get but expensive in SoCal
People forget that the expressions i.e. Blanco, reposado etc are everything when it comes to assessing tequila. Some people would never consider anything but a Blanco and it’s original form as the best possible tequila. Others will immediately go for an extra Anejo simply because of its super premium positioning and pricing. So to ask for the absolute best tequila at any price is even more subjective than it would be for most spirits.
Personally, I don’t think aging tequila improves it per se. It just changes it. Therefore, if I had to choose what I considered to be the best tequila it would probably be a Blanco. Availability is a huge issue and my very favourite Blancos are no longer available at retail. Right now, I would probably choose Wild Common or Fortaleza still strength. If you could find a bottle the best tequila of all time in my opinion is Calle 23 Criollo.
It isn't just if cost is not an issue, availability is a huge issue. I understand that by people giving their tops it could be making the next set of problems, but a lot of bottles I hesitate to finish (and sip rarely) are limited and hard to get. Makes sense, right? I left off Fortaleza since that's just lazy to include. These are in no order, and will likely change tomorrow.
Can’t run out of what’s not there to get. That’s what unicorning is for. Found a Pasote XA 1579 in the hood for $125 and it’s for special occasions only. Incredible spirit. Goes for $225 and up if you can get one.
I have one! And no one has mentioned it since the NOM change but Pasote I guess does not have a new-NOM XA on the market, right? Ergo, any Pasote XA we find is original?
the big fat thick heavy law enforcement weapon sized bottle with the white mask on it? nothing else like it
Cuervo Gold
Herradura
1800 Coconut Flavor
The one with a bottle shaped like a guitar
Patron Silver
#4 Rock and Roll Platinum, triple distilled, yum!
This is some bs comment. Can't believe it's the most upvoted. People come to this subreddit to learn about tequila, and you just want to be a fiend about it... just stfu if you don't have an actual helpful response.
If you know, you know
Someone doesn't want his favorites spread around and end up being like the hard to find Fortaleza.
Cascahuin Cerro de Luz
Patron X Guillermo del Toro
Primo
Gran Patrón Piedra
Fortaleza Still Strength
Fortaleza lote 100
Calle 23 Criollo
123 Tequila 2
123 Tequila 1
Lalo blanco
As you can see I firmly believe Chava at 1123 is the master of Tequila right now.
If I only had 1123, 1579, and 1493 to choose from for the rest of my life I’d be one happy MFer
What you guys consider to be the best budget and highest quality you can get for someone looking to try tequila for the first time?
Tres Agaves has been solid and it’s around $30 it’s organic/ additive free. BevMo carries it and if you sign up for their rewards you get $10 off $50+ I got 2 bottles with the promo for $50.
In my opinion I think that cimmaron is the best for the money. All additive free and comes in a one liter for 30 dollars for the blanco and 36-37 for the reposado. It is my go to well tequila at home.
I’m subscribed to a lot of subreddits. I have bought firearms, motorcycles, antiques worth thousands of dollars because of strangers’ advice on the internet…
Cimmaron tequila under 30 bucks is 👍
I agree 100%
I just bought my first bottle on a whim on Sunday. The blanco was $21 for a 750 and I totally agree. Very drinkable. There's a nice natural sweetness and the agave still shines through.
Lalo
I got a connect box of 6 bottles for 120$
Lalo is the winner for me as well.
Arette for me
Tapatío, full stop.
How much is a bottle in your area? For me a bottle is like 40-50 dollars.
Hey guys, I'd take any suggestions for a good Tequila that mix well in drinks and that is all purpose. No specifical price point! Thanks a lot, much love
For mixing, go for good taste at good value:
Lunazul, Espolon, Cimarron, and Tapatio are common choices for mixing. Tequila purists will decry some of those for their production methods, but they do the trick.
Uno, Dos, Tres is a nice choice if you don’t mind spending the coin. Same for Casa Noble (I really like their joven).
Typically, you want to mix with blanco or reposado in traditional tequila cocktails. Anejo would be a good choice if you are substituting tequila into cocktails that traditionally use brown spirits (e.g. tequila old fashioned).
Thanks everyone, I went for an Ocho blanco! (since it's one of the two avaible anyone recommended HUM)
I would go with Espolon, Lunazul, Exotico, or Milagro.
Olmeca Altos, Coa, Espolon, El Jimador, Lunazul for less pricey.
El Tesoro, Siete Leguas, Ocho for more expensive.
Whatever you buy, just make sure it says “100% de agave” on the label.
Pretty new to drinking tequila but it's become my spirit of choice. I've tried Sierra silver wasn't my thing. Didn't mind the Espolon. First time trying Jose Cuervo Especial. Not a fan tbh. Can anyone recommend a good tequila for my next try ? I like to have as a shot and drink with a few beers on the side. Looking for something smooth and easy to drink.
Avoid Cuervo unless it says traditional on it at least.
I’m always curious about “smooth” means to people. Can you let me know what smooth means to you?
Anyway, you will see a lot of the same brands over and over here. Fortaleza is awesome and really popular right now. I personally like Espolón, I would give milagro a try if I were you.
Smooth to me I think is something that goes down well without a chaser or salt and lemon. Something that is easier to take without a crazy burn afterwards. I liked espolon too I think I'll get it again maybe try the blanco ? Milargo is available at my local bottlo so I'll give that a try. Thanks
Personally I think Milagro is good bang for your buck, especially the reposado. It’s usually only a little more than the blanco but has a bit more flavor, I’d suggest trying that one for a starter that doesn’t break the bank.
Interesting. Do you sip it? Or just shoot it? If you sip, do you sip it on the rocks or neat? Do you ever chill it before you drink it? I have a full bartending set up at home. I like drinking my tequila on the rocks. Sip it slowly over one large ice cube.
For shots, sometimes I do what I call mini margaritas. I put ice in a shaker, two dabs of agave nectar, a squeeze of lime and 1.5 oz of liquor. Shake and pour.
Even just shaking a tequila in ice before pouring your shot can give a “smoother” experience. Yes it’s slightly diluted, and yes it does mute the flavors slightly. BUT if that’s what how you enjoy your drink, more power to you.
Sorry about the pointless comments you may get. But start with Arrete, Lalo, G4, or a clean higher end like Cabal for an easy sip, always start with blancos and develop your palate. Cheers happy sipping
G4 is really good and “reasonably” priced for an additive free tequila
Will definitely give one of those a try. I live in Australia as well so the range isn't that great but will try to find one of those in store next time, thanks heaps mate appreciate it.
I disagree with this post starting with Blanco. Depends where you are coming from for drinking. I came over from whiskey/bourbon so anejos we're my gateway. I started with a few cheaper ones (milagro for example) and got accustomed to the agave taste but still familiar flavours. Then as I got more into it I moved over to the additive free crew and down toward Blanco that I really enjoy now. At first I found Blacnos too much.
Just download the Tequila Matchmaker app look at the additive free list and start shopping. And, use the Cuervo for a Molotov cocktail.
Espolón is good. My go to for palomas 🕊
Jajajaja everyone went crazy on this photo I bet. Like Dracula seeing a cross!! Lol
I came across this subreddit recently and love it. I have only drank Jose Cuervo mainly (I'm not a big drinker) is it a good tequila? I have had Don Julio Blanco that a coworker brought back for me when he went home to Mexico, and it was nice and smooth, I've also tasted 1800 coconut which I liked. I know I'm just starting out, but will like some recommendations for tequila for straight and mixed drinks ( my girl loves mixed drinks). Thanks guys for any advice.
These are better than good brands of tequila ...that are best ones made on Earth!! This is my list of years of work and updating. Pick ANY in the top 30 or 40... and you won't regret it.- https://longislandloutequila.com/what-brands-to-buy/
I will say it since no one has yet and you asked the question. No, Jose Cuervo is not good tequila. This sub has its list of favorites and tends to lean mostly toward traditionally made well crafted tequila. I like Don Julio, but if I’m buying it for home consumption I’m buying G4, Pasote, El Tesoro, Arrette, Olmeca Altos, Cascahuin, Ocho, Siete Leguas. If they sold Forteleza in my area I’d buy that.
all Jose Cuervo is bad?
I’m not going to say that as I have not tried their entire product line. You can certainly check Tequila Matchmaker if you want some good ranking and comparisons to other tequila.
Also I never said it was “bad”. I said it was not good. There’s a difference.
I really appreciate your answer, knowledge is power.
Tequila Herradura, Centenario, a few others. Depends how much you want to spend.
I feel comfortable spending about $40-$60 a bottle.
Don julio, maestro dobel, herradura, casa noble, tequila partida, not sure what is accessible in your area. Blanco is usually what you use for mixing drinks but I shoot blanco and reposado. If you like Jose try the tradicional reposado
Jose Cuervo “gold” is barely tequila. In this case “gold” is not better than the silvers on the market. Several people have already dogged on Jose Cuervo so I’ll stop, but I’ll add something: look for the words “100% Blue Agave” on any bottle you buy. You won’t find those words on Jose Cuervo, which contains processed sugar.
Blanco’s or Silvers are bottled right after distillation.
Reposado’s are “rested” 2-6 months maybe longer in a usually oak casks before bottling
Añejo’s are “aged” 1-3 years in oak casks before bottling.
Extra Añejos are aged over 3 years.
“Gold” tequila might be a blend, but in the case of Jose Cuervo it means “artificial Carmel coloring”.
Jose Cuervo isn't a 100% agave tequila because they use processed sugar. Lots of distilleries dose and can still use "100% Blue Agave" on their label, this is perfectly legal. Jose Cuervo can't put that on their label because only 51% of their spirit is made from distilled blue agave, the other 49% is grain liquor.
Edit: same thing goes for caramel coloring
https://www.totalwine.com/spirits/tequila/reposado/jose-cuervo-tradicional-reposado/p/1800750
100% blue agave. $16 where I live.
Jose cuervo is the worst of the worst. They ruin the industry.
For some of us, making margarita using margarita mixes may not be the same as using actual tequila.
Tequila is the star ingredient of this cocktail, and adding the best tequila for margarita takes the drinking experience to a whole new level. You can even make big batches using the best margarita machines to make your party more fun and memorable.
So, what's your go-to tequila for your margarita?
“Don Julio Blanco is one of the best-handcrafted tequilas on the market. The aromatic flavor comes from deep well water, which is possibly agave entirely. The unique style and taste leave a slightly sweet savor with cracking agave”
What?
Siete Leguas Blanco has been the star of my Tommy's Margaritas for a hot second now.
Best handcrafted is Don Julio Blanco? You’ve got to be trolling.
The way I look at it is you will spend 5-10 for an OK house margarita at most Mexican restaurants and 10-17 for a premium. At home I can make a super premium margarita for under $3.50. Fortaleza Blanco, Cointreau, lime and sometimes simple syrup. A Tommy's margarita would be even cheaper. I've used Espolon for margaritas and they were very good but not quite the same.
Forgot to mention that I was a longtime frozen margarita lover until of late. Now it's on the rocks forever. So much better flavor comes through. And at a lot of restaurants the frozen is made with a pre-made concoction of lower end stuff. On the rocks will usually get you better stuff even if its bottom shelf.
Frankly, you aren't going to get much love with that list here. Most of those brands are passable at best, and problematic at worst (looking at your casa amigos). I get that your page is more geared toward cocktails, but I think you could definitely add some entry level, easily accessible but faithful tequila brands: Olmeca Altos, G4, Siete Leguas, Cascahuin, Tapatio, and who here could forget Fortaleza (harder to come by, so less mass market appeal for margaritas). (edit for spelling)
Hey, thanks so much for these recommendations! We’ll definitely look into these brands.

IMO Im taking 7 leguas blanco over Lalo any day. I’d also do g4 repo over ocho repo. Thanks for sharing nice list.
Is g4 repo peppery like the blanco?
With a extra dash. It’s honestly the reason I enjoy it so much
facts!
Why is Casamigos even on this list? 🤮
Some real blasphemy on this list
Cimarron so low
Casamigos above siempre assuming it’s the 1414 is wild
How do you figure? You own the same tastebuds as him? You do know how personal rating work?
I was frowning on this list... until I saw Adictivo... then I tuned out completely!
Lalo ranked that high? I thought it was okay. Preferred Ochos blanco. I keep seeing Arette rank high on blind taste tests and reviews here. Might have to give it a try!
I would never say Lalo is delicious per se but its clean and inoffensive. Definitely not a 10.
best tequila
Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Tequila:
Types of Tequila:
100% Agave: Always choose tequilas labeled "100% agave" to ensure quality. Mixto tequilas contain added sugars and are generally lower quality.
Brand Reputation: Look for reputable brands known for their quality. Some well-regarded brands include:
Flavor Profile: Consider what flavors you enjoy. Some tequilas have fruity, spicy, or earthy notes, which can enhance your drinking experience.
Price Range: Quality tequilas can range from $20 to over $200. Determine your budget and look for the best options within that range.
Recommendations:
Choosing the right tequila ultimately depends on your personal taste and how you plan to enjoy it—whether in cocktails or sipping neat.
