TL;DR
Essential Toiletries
For college students, maintaining personal hygiene is crucial, especially when living in shared spaces like dorms. Basic toiletries that every student should have include toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, body wash, and a toothbrush [2:2]. Additional items such as dental floss, foot powder, and hand sanitizer can also be beneficial
[2:3].
Odor Control Products
To tackle body odor effectively, some users recommend using medical-grade antiseptics like Hibiclens (Chlorhexidine Gluconate) and PanOxyl (Benzoyl Peroxide scrub) to kill odor-causing bacteria [1]. These products are particularly useful for underarms and groin areas but should not be used above the neck.
Deodorants and Antiperspirants
For budget-friendly deodorant options, consider Nivea roll-ons, Wildstone Code, and Old Spice sticks. These products are known for providing freshness throughout the day and are suitable for classroom environments [4:1]
[4:3]. While some deos may require reapplication every few hours, they are generally effective for all-day use
[4:2].
Perfumes and Fragrances
While deodorants help with body odor, perfumes can add an additional layer of fragrance. However, it's important to choose scents that are not overpowering, as strong fragrances can trigger migraines or discomfort in others [1:7]. For those interested in longer-lasting perfumes, exploring extrait de parfum blends might be worthwhile
[4:6].
General Hygiene Practices
Beyond just using toiletries, regular showering and cleanliness are emphasized. Showering daily and using lightly scented products can significantly improve personal hygiene and social interactions [5:1]. It's also important to maintain cleanliness in communal bathrooms by flushing and wiping after use
[5].
There was a ton of discussion this past Spring about body odor on campus. Since there was a lot of complaining and no solution, I’d figure I’d offer mine.
Hibiclens (Chlorhexidine Gluconate)- This stuff is a medical grade antiseptic which will kill all of the odor causing bacteria. Leave it on your underarms and groin for 5 minutes, never use above the neck. Works wonders. Cycle it to every three days
PanOxyl (Benzoyl Peroxide scrub)- Get the 10% concentration. This will also kill bacteria, but you can use it on your face and scalp as well. Also leave this on for 5 minutes before washing off.
Aluminum Antiperspirant- I recommend Mitchum. Put this on every night on dry underarms and you won’t smell the next day.
Perfume (optional)- buy some nice perfume that you like. You might get compliments for your taste in fragrance.
Use a combination of all of these and we can all walk around campus without our noses being assaulted.
Cologne is no substitute for bathing! Stop with that insane advice!
Shiva H. Vishnu! The amount of chemical stink you guys drench yourselves in usually ends up stinking worse than you did before you put it on. It’s eye-watering, and it lingers long after you’ve left the library.
Who’s substituting bathing with cologne? Usually they’re doing both
Who on God’s green earth said not to shower. That’s prerequisite to what I said.
Yes, and what makes it worse is that some individuals migraine triggers is strong smells. So bad body Odor + cologne just makes a dangerous combo.
Bruh all yall engineering majors not be showering for DAYS. Shower in the morning and at night before you go to bed. Wear deodorant and cologne.
Just shower and wear deodorant
Love to hear it! Unfortunately, some people think it's optional
Nah fr it’s not rocket science.
This goes out to a specific group of people at UTA Ngl
I’m going to say two specific groups just to narrow it down.
Thank you! UTA has showers, no excuse not to shower. And if you ask the office, they'll direct to some places that give our free shampoo/deodorant.
I want to take a moment to address an important issue that has been noticed in our community. While college is a time for personal growth and learning, it’s also essential to take responsibility for basic self-care, particularly when it comes to personal hygiene.
It’s been observed that some students are not maintaining the hygiene standards expected in a shared environment. We all know that college life can get busy, but there is no excuse for neglecting personal cleanliness. Proper hygiene is not only crucial for your health and well-being, but it’s also a sign of respect for yourself and those around you.
Here are a few key areas to focus on:
While it may seem like a lot, maintaining good hygiene habits can be easy once they become part of your routine. It’s also important to note that while cologne or strong fragrances might seem like a quick fix, they do not mask the underlying smell. A fresh, clean body is far more effective.
Remember, personal hygiene is not just about appearance; it's about respecting yourself and the people around you. Please take this as a friendly reminder that you are part of a community, and your actions impact others. Let’s work together to maintain a respectful and pleasant environment for everyone.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
This should be posted at the beginning of each semester.
I’m gonna run for student gov and this will be one of my campaign points trust 💯💯
Jarvis, I’m low on karma
Nah not ts again
The fact that you have to address this, as in the basic principle of hygiene at all speaks volumes to the downed state of personal hygiene at UTA. Which is quite disappointed.
At the end of the day it’s like the saying goes
“You’re a university student, So act like one.”
19M here
I’m starting college soon and want to get a good deodorant (or antiperspirant) before classes begin.
I’m looking for something that:
Wildstone Code Deos : Titanium , Steel ; Denver : Black Code ; Keep in mind that these are deos and won't last long . If you need to get that wiff you need to respray every 2-3 hrs .
thank you. i’ll be in classes for 6–7 hours, could you suggest a perfume that lasts that long?
For you Budget again I feel Wildstone Code should be fine : Terra , Hero , Blue . If you're into Frags i would suggest you to get in touch with Master Perfumer . He's the best blender out there and usually runs offers . 999 for 3 . His blend is extrait de parfum which is the strongest out there . You can check him out here : https://www.instagram.com/desiperfumer?igsh=MXZ4Mnh6OWFzZmdwdw==
Go for old spice feels classic and rich
I second this. Go for the Old Spice Deo Sticks - I went with the Whitewater version which lasts around 5-6 hours easy and got it for 399 on Amazon. There are other ones as well.
thank you. even chatgpt me told me this lol. btw is it classroom-friendly or on the strong side?
nivea roll on le lo
thank you for suggesting
Derma co roll on/Nivea roll on. They won't make you smell good but will keep you fresh and will help with body odor. No matter which deo you buy, they won't last long. So start with roll ons and then slowly incorporate prefumes/deos.
Chemist at play roll on as well
gotcha, thanks for the suggestion
Wilstone code steel
I know it may be hard for people who didn't have someone teach them hygiene growing up. If you have any questions, ask and don't be ashamed. But please people. WASH YOURSELF AND WEAR DEODORANT! If you are dorming and using communal bathrooms, ITS NOT YOUR BATHROOM AT HOME. Be mindful and help keep it clean. Flush and wipe after yourself. Don't be gross and don't be doing none of that "weaponized incompetence". Soap (Dial), a washcloth, lotion, and deodorant is all you need to keep clean. I recommend any Gillette deodorant or the Apple and White Tea from Dove. please people 😭😭.
thank you ;)))
it’s kinda sad people actually need to here this 😭but preciate you soldier for looking out
of course 🫡
People guilty of failing this social contract rarely understand the weaponized incompetence part of this.
Folks, when you smell funky, you often don't realize how bad it is. Figure it out, shower daily (at a minimum), and take care to use some amount of lightly scented products. Your roommate deserves that. Your fellow classmates deserve that. Every person you interact with will appreciate that.
Axe Body spray is not it. Nor is, 'I didn't do much the last couple of days, so I can skip washing up.'
Funk is funk.
!!!!!!
I wish all restrooms could do this.
I should probably ask this somewhere else, but this post reminded me. As a male only household, what are some toiletries, feminine hygiene products, or specific misc items should I keep in my guest bathroom for my female guests???
Past female guests have told us a hair dryer and a waste basket. I have purchased both of those, but the Schitt’s Creek episode where David is babysitting the teenage daughter of his boss makes me think I should have some emergency feminine hygiene products put away under the guest bathroom cabinet.
I have absolutely no idea what to buy, so please be specific.
Thanks in advance!
“Regular” sized Tampax pearl tampons, and “regular” sized pads too. Waste basket should be close enough to the toilet that you can reach it ❤️
Thank you so much!
That’s proactive .
Hello, I'm 21y/o at university right now. Don't ask me how it only occrured right now, but I'm starting to get conscious about my appearence and hygiene. I rarely even touch my hair. I use only soap (cheap ones not anything special)and shampo when showering. I never used any perfumes except for (parfum saba sometimes), and deodorant in summer. Please don't be harsh on me, what do you think should be considered a necessity? Is there anything I'm probably not aware of that I need to use? What kind of perfumes or deodorant I should use? I'm not that rich so I would ask for the absolute necessities that can do the job, and as I said any tricks or routines I can follow. I would love if you share that with me
Just buy cheap perfumes that are not popular I used cristian lay ones before dont use the one million, sauvage …
Soap is underrated maybe use a “bain de bouche” or mouthwash to have a better odor in your mouth Drink less coffee, and dont smoke and brush your teeth and wash your face in the morning
You don’t have to brush you hair or something beauty is mostly for women it’s not that important of a criteria for men confidence is far more important that’s why freret get laid more than you
Finally fear god in other people daughters Finding a wife using islamic way is far easier
That last part tho , here's your Crown king 👑
The last part is just : 👏
بارك الله فيك و ربي يحميك ❤
deo isn't only for summer and so is perfume
body wash , shampoo , conditionner are a necessity when you shower and invest in good ones ( preferably mel pharmacie )
dress normally, if you don't know how , there are ig accounts and stuff you can follow , nothing too expensive or anything , unicolors do work
make sure your shoes are clean when you leave the house ( people do notice them )
wear a watch ,
pick a good hairstyle ( ask your hairdresser , friends etc ) and cut your hair more often for a fresh look
start flossing and cleaning your tongue when you brush your teeth , teeth make a big difference
get skin care products if you have acne or something
Me and the boys reading echri ml pharmacie conditionner w body wash
I don't buy them mel pharmacie personally . But apparently they are less damaging w maymlouch amradh on the long term
akhssel wejhek sbeh, brush your teeth, shave your pits, take a shower sbeh w lil w u good to go
I got you bro Buying a saba perfume is okay i do that and some of them are great. I use "le beau" for summer and "le male" for winter and it smells awesome and got many compliments from it.
The first fashion advice that i recommend is to get in shape and train , a beautiful body can make any piece of clothes beautiful, also when you train you'll shower after every session which helps with hygiene
If you have a bad skin it's okay to buy some skin product and take care of your screen
Buy some nice clothes, follow old money fashion. Don't overspend , i usually get my clothes from fripe and it's much cheaper and nearly the same in quality even better sometimes.
And the best advice i can give is pray and be closer to god , it not only makes your hygiene better because you'll be Washing nearly your entire body 5 times a day, but also for that peace and discipline that will bring everything in order in your life. That's the best thing that ever happened to me in my life and my life started to be greater when i became closer to god.
Keep it up bro , i hope i see you win someday
Even if you can't buy a face cleanser just buy a soap (dove) be 4.5dt max Déo hâta aka tube rokhs WL bachecha Parfum bl rouh nestwr 20dt t3bilk Dhwefrk dima ma9sousin Gel douche 5dt wchwy (lilas) y3ni fama Options
please don't use deo that shit is toxic x) i use bellazza + chabb and it do magic

I mean this in regards to your emergency "oh crap, I smell" drawer. Like deoderant, etc? What should I plan on having on me at all times? Also do your schools allow mini fridges?
Pro tip for the “oh crap, I smell” moments: wipe off with some hand sanitizer or an alcohol prep pad to kill the bacteria and smell before applying fresh deodorant. It makes a huge difference.
I like to be prepared for almost anything. I have a first aid kit with some basics and some OTC meds. Then I have a hygiene kit with tooth brush, toothpaste, Listerine, some makeup remover wipes, a brush and hair ties, a travel size dry shampoo, some hand sanitizer wipes, deodorant, a Tide pen, sunscreen, q-tips, nail clippers and nail file. Then I have bathroom kit with pads, tampons and wipes. I also have a little travel sewing kit and a change of clothes and shoes. Yes I’m allowed a mini fridge and I specifically got one with a separate freezer. I keep it filled with soda, protein shakes, yogurt, cheese, fruit cups, etc and I keep a couple emergency lunches, ice, and some emergency ice cream bars in the freezer.
Honestly I would love to crack open an emergency popsicle at work.
Thank you for showing me the way !
I'm not even a teacher but emergency ice cream bars is going to be a requirement in my house now.
I always keep lotion.
We are not allowed to have mini fridges in our classrooms. This is why there is certainly not one in the storeroom between my classroom and the next one
Lollll But seriously why don’t they allow you to have mini fridges? 😭 those things are life savers for the classroom.
I keep an extra shirt and pants in the closet. Deodorant. Gum or mints.
I also keep a spare bra and undies, just in case!
Advil, Tylenol, Imodium, glasses cleaning wipes, unscented baby wipes, deodorant, hypoclorus acid spray for my face, room spray, salt, sun hat, sun glasses, protein bars, and Mac n cheese cups for emergency lunch.
Yes to fridges. I have a fridge, microwave, and Nespresso.
I like to feel prepared and have what I need!
Yes, plus dry shampoo, hair ties, and toothbrush/toothpaste!
Oh and lotion, hair brush, tampons, travel tooth brush, floss
Oh I spelled it wrong! Hypochlorous acid is a spray for your face and it helps kill the germs and helps with acne. I like to spray it when I get sweaty or come in from being outside. Tower 28 makes one but I get a different brand off amazon! They also make a cleaning grade one and I spray it at home as a sanitizer/freshener. It’s great haha
Deodorant is always a must have, so is a quality scented hand lotion. Gum, mints, or breath strips! Another one that is a lifesaver but not really for smell are Tide pens/stain pens. I always keep an extra basic outfit just in case, too — I’ve been burned one too many times by coffee mishaps. A pocket hairbrush has come in handy before.
Hey everyone! Moving into my dorm soon! i got my own room and bathroom, so is there anything that i might need that I’m unaware of? Tips, tricks, anything? thank u !!
Hi OP!
Idk if your uni sent you a link on where to possibly order your dorm essentials, but I went through this company and was very happy. This is the one with the most, but you can definitely check out the list and figure out what you need/don’t need. Like someone else said, invest in that nice bed topper - your back will thank you. https://www.ocm.com/product/ultimate-room-collection-50-piece-twin-xl-bedding-and-bath-set-2147984724?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse&utm_campaign=G_OCM_Smart+Shopping&utm_content=&utm_id=go_cmp-1558454530_adg-59482434379_ad-294739336064_pla-325425753764_dev-m_ext-_prd-2147984724&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIiK2H1OfD8QIVUwp9Ch1LKAzHEAQYASABEgIfHPD_BwE
Other things I would include:
Biggest and best tip I can share - learn how to budget! I had SO MANY FRIENDS who spent so much money on things they could not always afford (read: alcohol) and had to have their parents bail them out. Not aware of your financial situation, but you want to make sure you have enough to allow yourself to have fun but not over indulge. I got a job in my first semester and it really helped me to figure out budgeting within my needs.
Another tip - make friends with the people in your hall. Say hi. Invite them in for coffee. You won’t get along with everyone, it’s a given, but just knowing who lives there is really great so you feel safe and get to know those around you. I had a couple girls in my dorm who had the same class as me and we walked to class together in the mornings and studied in the evening. It was great!
IDK if you have a roommate or not, but make sure whatever boundaries you have be said early on and enforced.
That’s all I can think off at the moment - good luck with your move and future classes!
Lol - also want to add, you might want to get a lunch box. No one will care if you carry one and it’ll keep your lunch safe from being smashed by books if you try to stuff it in your backpack.
omg all of this was so thoughtful thank u so much!!
Shower caddy & shower shoes! Cleaning supplies too! Iron Towels Storage space for your clothes and shoes Bed sheets/blanket/ pillows TV Pictures You want to basically bring everything you used daily at home this will also make you feel at home. Will your dorm have a kitchen as well?
thank u so much!! and yes there is a kitchen!
Okay, your dorm may already have pots and kitchen supplies but maybe not so you may want to bring kitchen essentials & definitely go grocery shopping when you move in to help save on money lol. I hope you have a great college experience! Make a lot of friends lol.
Definitely bring pots of your own-you never know what’s been in community ones; especially if you have food allergies.
Check if your school provides you with toilet paper, and cleaning in your bathroom. My school doesn't provide that in the halls that have private bathrooms, only the corridor style bathrooms are cleaned/stocked.
Get a mini fridge, and some Tupperwares bc dinning hall food will get old very fast. Also shower shoes, and a mattress topper
thank u so muchhh!!
Dustpan and broom or a small vacuum, nail clippers, a stapler, surge protectors, if your dorm allows them, trashcan with bags, maybe a lamp, plastic food containers, reusable utensils if your dorm has a kitchen but it's always good to have, and slippers or a pair of indoor sandle.
Some of the things I listed seem kinda pointless to list but there are people who forget about bringing some of these things or think they won't need them. I bought some plastic food containers from 7/11 and used them to sneakily take food from the cafeteria to the dorm.
These are fun shower sandals.
omg thank u 🥺🤟🏾
Yup.
I took my pair to a research facility in the high arctic.
For maintenance and safety purposes we'd have some of the bosses walk through the dorms periodically and I'd leave them out drying.
I got fun comments.
Alright, I'm going to he making a series of crash course guides for all of you, because as much as y'all might think you have things figured out living away from your parents, this is not the case for many of you. And that's okay.
In this crash course, we are going to be talking about hygiene. This relates to what I'd call American hygiene culture.
1.) Central Illinois is part of the Midwest, but it can be anywhere from 5-10 degrees hotter than Chicagoland. This puts it closer in line with the South. With high heat and humidity, comes sweat. Humans have two kinds of sweat, a fatter sweat from your armpits that is prone to make BO, and sweat for the rest of your body that primarily just salt and water. Why do we have fatty sweat in our armpits? Who knows, not me. This fatty sweat is broken down by bacteria, which is what causes an offensive odor. Now, the sweat from the rest of your body will still produce an odor, but it is far less offensive.
2.) Knowing this, you should be wearing deodorant EVERY DAY, especially in summer. I understand that some of you have sensitive skin or allergies to some of the ingredients in deodorant. There are hypoallergenic options available to you. You don't wear deodorant for yourself, you wear it for other people. If you are taking the bus, walking on a busy street, sitting next to someone in class, you are engaging in a social contract. There is expected behavior, and when you defy that expected behavior, it creates an unpleasant environment for everyone. Smelling excessively like BO is not acceptable behavior.
3.) Just because the sweat on the rest of your body smells far less than from your armpits, doesn't mean that it doesn't smell. While for some people, it will have a minimumal smell, for most people, especially after a long day, it can add up to something less than pleasant.
3.) This is were we get into fragrances! Colognes and perfumes are a great way to subtly mask the general sweat smell from the high heat. As a general rule of thumb, don't wear fragrances that are musky, vanilla heavy, or contain white florals. While those all can smell amazing, they run a higher risk of giving other people a headache. Citrus, woods, marine/aquatic, coconut, lavender, and soapy fragrances are all mass appealing and safe bets.
4.) You are not 13, Axe Body Spray is not an acceptable fragrance. Go to Sephora, get yourself something like Dylan Blue or Versace Eros. Invest in something quality, look for something that says Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Parfum, or Elixir. Those are the concentrations quality fragrances. A body spray like Axe might be something like 3% or less essential oils, while EdT goes from 5-15%, with EtP 15-20%, Parfum 20-30%, and Elixir being 30%+. Quality fragrances only require 4-7 sprays. Do not over do it, you should be discovered, not announced.
5.) You are not 13, you should not be using 5 in 1. A body wash is much stronger than a shampoo, if you use it on your hair, it will strip it of its natural oils, which can leave your hair dry and damaged. A body wash can tackle your body, leave something gentle for your hair and scalp. Conditioner doesn't clean your hair, it can help soften your hair after you shower, and replenish some of the oils stripped from shampooing. You do not need a conditioner, especially if you have naturally oily hair. If you have dry hair, or something like 4C hair, replenishing oils becomes a lot more important.
6.) You should be bathing EVERY DAY. I shouldn't need to tell you this, but with the high heat we are having, missing showers is not an option. Now if you have naturally dry skin, you might not need to use soap every time. Even just running water over your skin will help remove most of the dirt and debris from the day. Do not be missing showers kids.
7.) If you find that your become intensely itchy after a shower, that means you have dry skin. You will need to moisturize. Getting a non-scented lotion is a great way to combat this. Just because this adds an annoying extra step does not mean you should be skipping showers. Don't be stinky.
8.) You should be brushing your teeth EVERY morning and EVERY night. You need to be flossing or using a water pick. There isn't an excuse for this, this is extremely important for dental hygiene. An electric toothbrush is MUCH better than a standard tooth brush. Pick one up for 50 bucks.
9.) A lot of bad breath is caused by tonsil stones and bacteria on your tongue. You can gargle salt water to help dislodge tonsil stones, or use a water pick with a SOFT setting. Don't blast your tonsils with the full force of a water pick. If your water pick only has one setting, it probably isn't suitable for removing tonsil stones. You should be scrapping your tongue every week or so. If your tongue is white, that is basically a mat of bacteria, food, and old saliva. It's gross stuff. If you do both, your breath should improve almost instantly.
10.) If someone offers you a breath mint or gum, that means you should probably take it.
11.) Shirts, especially in summer, should only be worn once. You can wear pants/shorts a few times before washing. You have zero excuse for underwear, one day ONLY.
12.) You should clean your bed sheets every couple weeks MINUNUM, especially your pillow cases. I always shower before bed, so because I'm going into bed clean, two weeks work well for me. If you shower in the morning, you probably should change your sheets weekly.
13.) Your pillows should never be discolored. If you have noticed they have become discolored, you should have already replaced them.
14.) You are probably using more soap than you need for your laundry. A small splash is all you need, even if the manufacturer recommends more. Using too much detergent can leave residue in your clothes, which can irrate your skin, will try dirt more easily, and just generally wastes money.
This should be the basics. I wish you all the best, more guides to come.
What an excellent explanation of American culture and hygiene expectations! I think #10 gets lost on many ppl as a subtle hit one needs to be more hygienic I also don’t think spending money on a perfume or cologne is necessary! If you’re looking to spend less I would recommend not buying a fragrance. However OP is right that a light spritz and stave off scents that Americans tend to avoid.
This a great post! I just want to add a few tips for people that I remember from my time as an undergrad (cause I'm old now I guess).
- Leave the washer open after you use it so that it doesn't get moldy for the next people and stink up their clothes.
- Along those lines, don't leave your clothes in the washer overnight. Besides being annoying for fellow residents (if you share a washer), it makes your clothes smell completely gross.
- Try and carry some hand sanitizer around. The last thing you want is to get sick during finals week or to be that kid coughing all over people during class. It might also be useful to have a couple masks/covid tests just in case.
- If you choose a day to slack off, choose a cool, sunny day. The rain just exacerbates any bad smell that you have unfortunately.
- If you enjoy eating foods with onions/garlic, etc. or drinking coffee, carry mints and/or floss unless you brush your teeth after lunch
As a representative of the female community, I can say that we do not enjoy smelling Axe Body Spray everywhere lollll (it's mostly marketed at guys right?) but I don't wear perfume so I'm a hypocrite.
I hate Axe. Give me Bleu de Chanel or Aqua di Gio and I'll be one happy camper.
-Don't be stinky
Stick that on a sign and place it in front of Grainger Bob.
Or… Grainger Bob sezs, “Don’t be stinky!”
back in 2018 we used to have signs up in the 391 lab asking people to mind personal hygiene. warms my heart that nothings changed :)
Honestly, someone should send a copy of this to an RA/RD of one of the dorms to see if they want to distribute it. Couldn’t hurt.
Make Grainger clean again☝️☝️☝️
The world shall explode before even one speck of cleanliness touches Grainger
I don't think it's possible. But I will try.
This post will soon be banned in ECE
Environmental engineering does not count. ;-)
