What Redditors are Saying

Best Travel Mugs

TL;DR

  • Zojirushi SM-SR series for excellent heat retention and leak-proof design [1:2]
  • Kinto Travel Tumbler praised for ease of cleaning and reliability [2:1]
  • Fellow Carter Move noted for its ceramic lining, though some users report odor issues [3:1][3:6]
  • Aerolight Transit Mug highly recommended for being truly leakproof [4:1]

Heat Retention

The ability to keep drinks hot is a key feature for travel mugs. The Zojirushi SM-SR series is particularly noted for its exceptional heat retention, keeping coffee hot from morning until afternoon [1:2]. Similarly, the S'well travel mugs are praised for their ability to retain heat well [5:1]. Users have reported that Zojirushi can keep coffee warm for up to 15 hours [5:3].

Leak-Proof Design

A leak-proof design is essential for carrying a travel mug in a bag. The Zojirushi SM-SR series has a locking lid that prevents leaks even when tossed sideways in a bag [1:2]. The Aerolight Transit Mug is also confirmed to be truly leakproof by multiple users [4:1][4:2]. The Yeti Rambler with Hotshot cap is another option that doesn't leak during commutes [2:2].

Ease of Cleaning

Ease of cleaning is an important consideration for many users. The Kinto Travel Tumbler is appreciated for having gaskets that are easy to remove and clean [2:8]. The Fellow Carter Move has been noted for its ceramic lining, which is easier to clean than metal surfaces, although some users have reported persistent odor issues [3:1][3:6].

Comfort and Style

Comfortable drinking spouts and stylish designs are also valued features. The Sip by S’well is highlighted for its perfect shape and variety of colors and designs [5:2][5:5]. The Aerolight Transit Mug is described as comfortable to drink from, with no issues of the nose hitting the lid [4:1].

Additional Considerations

When choosing a travel mug, consider your specific needs such as size, whether you need one-handed operation, or if you require a mug that performs well in extreme temperatures. For those in cold climates, Zojirushi is recommended for its superior thermal capabilities [5:9]. Additionally, it's worth considering how much effort you're willing to put into cleaning, as some mugs may require more maintenance than others [5:4].

ORIGINAL POST

I wanted to open up a discussion about travel mugs. Specifically, ones that actually keep drinks hot for a decent amount of time, won’t leak if tossed in a bag, and are still convenient to carry—ideally with a handle or some kind of grip.

Have you found one that ticks all the boxes? What’s worked (or not worked) for you? Would love to hear what others are using day-to-day, whether for commuting, school, or travel.

Let’s help each other find some solid options.

I've gone through a small army of travel mugs over the years, but the one that finally stuck for me is the Zojirushi SM-SR series. I know it doesn’t have a handle, which might be a dealbreaker for some, but it fits snug in a car cup holder and in the side of my backpack. What won me over is how insanely good it is at keeping drinks hot—I’ve poured coffee at 8 AM and it's still piping at 2 PM. Plus, the locking lid is foolproof; I’ve tossed it sideways in a bag with a laptop more times than I can count and never had a single leak. It's more of a thermos-style mug, but for anyone who prioritizes heat retention and zero spills, it's been unbeatable.

I’m looking for affordable but good quality travel mugs for my pour over in the morning. If you know any slim and tall, travel mugs that you recommend, I would love some recommendations. Or anything that you guys have used in the past. Thanks!

Yeti Rambler bottle (not the mug) with their screw-in Hotshot cap. No, you can’t open it one-handed, but it doesn’t leak at all in my bag during my commute. One of the conductors on my train has one, too.

I’ve had a Miir travel mug for a long time, never spills on me. Confident enough in it that I’ll put it inside my backpack where my laptop is while I bike to work.

I’ve been using the Kinto Travel Tumbler and the Zojirushi Stainless Mug, pretty happy with both of them.

Got gifted a Fuglen branded Kinto one and I’ve been very happy with it. The gaskets are easy to take out and clean. Only minus I guess is the need to use two hands to drink, unless you leave the lid off. (Not really an issue for me because I tend to sit down and drink anyway).

Kinto travel tumbler. I literally cannot fault it.

Fellow has an odour issue, by all means try them but buy from somewhere with a no questions asked returns policy in case you get a bad one. Some people seem to not have this issue, but I've tried both a wide mouth carter and a rocky and both had a lingering off smell after a single use (I'd describe it as a mix of soy sauce, garlic, and a little fish. I've smelled similar funks from industrial adhesives). Some people think it's down to the O rings, I can assure you it's the coating, since with the carter I never even put the lid on.

I love Fellows products, but I can’t believe this is still a thing. I had a Carter like 4 years ago that smelled like garlic and they replaced it with one that smelled worse. I soaked that thing in everything known to man and it still smelled.

2 upvotes on reddit
L
LyKosa91 · 6 months ago

It's pretty shocking, right? I thought it was pretty telling that the carter arrived with a sachet of activated charcoal inside, not silica gel. Clearly it's something they're aware of or they wouldn't be packing them with odour absorbers.

I did manage to get the stink out with boiling water and bicarb, but it came back immediately after the next use. That's not normal. One quick wash and with the exception of the silicone seals, my kinto smells neutral. Absolute bullshit for a product that sells itself on the claims of a ceramic lining providing the "purest taste and aromas" or whatever.

Mine doesn't smell but the (white) ceramic inlay turns brown from coffee oils very quickly if it doesn't get cleaned daily. Little bit annoying but doesn't affect taste that much in my opinion.

Thoughts on the Bru travel mug or Fellow Carter Go?

Posted by CptBrexitt · in r/JamesHoffmann · 8 months ago

Looking for a travel mug I can take with me to work, not by car though. I'm thinking the 16Oz options for both, and both seems to be leakproof and ceramic which are the 2 being things for me. Any thoughts which is better or worse? Can't seem to decide. Many thanks for any suggestions

I have a Fellow Carter Go and I love it. It keeps coffee hot for hours (I'll make it at home, get to work and it's still scalding hot). I've never had any leak issues. The sip function is great too.

I have the Carter and was hoping that a travel mug with ceramic lining would preserve the taste of the coffee very well. But when filled in very hot it still tasted very different when I arrived at work, even when poured in another cup. I started to bring it down to drinking temperature before leaving by putting an ice cube into the mug and then filling in the freshly brewed coffee. This way the coffee tasted a lot more like it did originally when drinking from the mug after a while.

So maybe the issue isn't the stainless steel but actually keeping it very hot and sealed right after brewing.

1 upvotes on reddit
CptBrexitt · OP · 7 months ago

Ceramic is more for convenience than anything, any decent stainless steel mug does actually change the taste. It's how well you clean it, since micro-scratches ect. trap coffee oils that make it taste worse. A ceramic lining just makes it easier to clean. But you're also right, temperature of the coffee can have a real effect on taste

I haven’t had a carter so can’t comment on that but I have had a bru mug for a couple months now and genuinely love it.

I haven’t had a single issue with it and I can say it is 100% leak proof. My party trick at work is filling it with coffee then jostling it around on top of my head.

I think having to remove the lid to drink on the carter would annoy me, the one hand open close on the bru mug is really convenient for me.

3 upvotes on reddit
CptBrexitt · OP · 8 months ago

I was thinking Bruno would be good because you can open it with the 360 lid but also just unscrew it like a fellow carter if you want the aroma. And it's cheaper. Glad to hear it's leakproof, that was my main concern as I'll have it in my bag with my laptop.

Em….bit hard to say as I normally drink it all before it cools down!

I will say, I was running late one morning so just made an instant coffee before leaving for work, and about an hour later when I first went to drink it it was still hot enough to burn my mouth!

I recently let my Carter soak with some orange scented dish soap overnight. I rinsed it thoroughly the next day and only noticed that it still had some orange smell from the dish soap in it, after filling in my coffee. Totally ruined the brew and was hard to get out. Usually the dish soap scent doesn't really stick to anything but this was crazy. I could get rid of it eventually with a sponge and a lot more rinsing but I'm not that convinced of ceramic lining anymore.

I have two Fellow mugs (Carter Go and the wide-mouth Carter Move). I use them constantly, at home and on the go. I love them and have absolutely no issues with retained odors or bad tastes. My coffee tastes great in them and stays quite hot, long enough.

I wash with hot soapy water and use a soft bottle brush to clean the ceramic-coated inside. I use a soft toothbrush to get any dried coffee out of the stainless steel threads, and to clean the threads on the lid. I think people neglect to clean the threads and the lid and gasket, which would certainly explain smells. Just have to be careful on the ceramic coating so you don't scratch it -- no metal implements or harsh cleansers/tools.

I really love their mugs and have given several as gifts as well.

For 100% spill proof and amazing thermal retention both hot and cold, the classic stainless steel Zojirushi cannot be beat. You have to commit to carefully and thoroughly cleaning the lid/gaskets. The Zojirushi can be thrown in your bag upside down and will never spill (as long as you close it correctly). I've had my 16-oz for 15 years! Have replaced lid/gaskets a few times. Now I use it only for water. It's not as nice for drinking and tasting your coffee as the Fellow because it's such a narrow mouth, and it's stainless, not ceramic. But still great.

Aerolight Transit mug opinions (any size)

Posted by ricecooker_madness · in r/StanleyCups · 4 months ago

Hi everyone! I'm looking for a travel mug for coffee, and I'm interested in the Aerolight Transit Mug. It seems like a good one! There are positive reviews on YouTube and around the internet, but I always take those with a grain of salt.

What I'm most curious about is whether the lid is truly leak-proof (I just want to toss my flat white in my bag and go), and whether it's easy to drink from. Does your nose hit the lid? Is the mug comfortable to drink from?

So, what’s your experience with it? I'd love to hear any and all opinions!

Amazon sells a replacement gasket kit for the aerolight transit bottle that you may want to look at. I don’t know how long the gaskets will last. I’d say my usage is light, as I have just used it for water and not coffee, and not subjected it to extreme conditions otherwise.

I agree with everything everyone's saying! Love mine, I have three! Wish they would come out with some cool new colors. One word of advice don't drop it on a hard surface like I did. It will break the vacuum seal inside and not keep your coffee hot any more.

Highly recommend.

This is what I use. S’well has a few different styles of travel mug but I prefer the Sip. It’s the perfect shape, fits easily in a car cup holder or backpack side pocket, doesn’t leak, retains heat well, is 16oz, and you can fully close the opening on the lid. Mine put up with a lot of wear and tear at work and they’re very durable.

I have thought about this topic too much, but if I were to give you the TL;DR version of previous posts on this:

  • Nearly all mugs will keep coffee hot, usually too hot if you're drinking straight out of the spout, so this is almost never a concern
  • By contrast, the #1 concern is the lid, if you're drinking straight out of the mug. A large lip on the lid will give you some critical runway to cool the coffee down, lest your tongue and palate end up burnt meat.
  • How much tolerance you have to how much effort is to clean come into play also. I have no patience for the Zojirushi lid's multiple pieces you have to take apart; other people are fine with it.

There have been too few reviews on the Kinto, but for me, combination of great looks, comfortable drinking lid with plenty of lip, easy to clean, this is the epitome: https://kinto-usa.com/collections/tumblers/products/20941?variant=22206320967728 Unfortunately, again, wish there were a few more reviews

Zojirushi is the king of thermal. Material-wise, I don't know of any that is more "pure" (metal/cermaic, no plastic drinking lid) than Fellow's though

Just recommend keeping the lid off on the Zojirushi for a bit after brewing if you have the chance. Otherwise it'll probably still be too hot to drink even after an hour or two

Zojorushi makes a ton of truly excellent relatively inexpensive travel mugs that come in a bunch of different colors.

I like that the lid locks, the spring action on the lid is very effective, it's built like a rock, and it keeps coffee hot for days (literally if you leave it full).

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Travel Mugs:

  1. Insulation: Look for double-wall vacuum insulation to keep beverages hot or cold for extended periods. Mugs with this feature can maintain temperature for several hours.

  2. Material: Stainless steel is a popular choice for durability and resistance to rust and odors. BPA-free plastic is also common but may not retain heat as well.

  3. Lid Design: A spill-proof lid with a secure seal is essential for travel. Consider lids that allow for easy sipping and cleaning.

  4. Capacity: Choose a size that fits your needs, typically ranging from 12 to 20 ounces. Ensure it fits in your car cup holder if you plan to use it on the go.

  5. Ease of Cleaning: Look for mugs that are dishwasher safe or have a wide mouth for easy cleaning.

  6. Portability: Lightweight and compact designs are ideal for travel. Some mugs come with handles or grips for easier carrying.

Recommendations:

  • Contigo Autoseal West Loop: This mug features excellent insulation, a one-handed operation lid, and is spill-proof. It keeps drinks hot for up to 5 hours and cold for up to 12 hours.

  • Zojirushi Stainless Steel Travel Mug: Known for its superior heat retention, this mug has a sleek design and a wide mouth for easy filling and cleaning. It also features a safety lock to prevent accidental spills.

  • Thermos Stainless King Travel Mug: This is a budget-friendly option that offers great insulation and a durable design. It keeps drinks hot for up to 7 hours and cold for up to 18 hours.

Choosing the right travel mug depends on your specific needs, such as how long you need to keep your drink hot or cold and how you plan to carry it.
