What Redditors are Saying

Best TV Size for Gaming

TL;DR The best TV size for gaming largely depends on your viewing distance. Generally, 40" to 55" is recommended for gaming, but larger sizes like 65" or even 75" can be suitable if you sit further away.

Viewing Distance and TV Size

The most important factor in deciding the best TV size for gaming is your viewing distance. Many users suggest that a TV size between 40" to 55" is optimal for gaming [1:1]. However, if you are sitting further away, larger sizes such as 65" or 75" may be more appropriate [1:2], [3:1]. For example, one user mentioned using a 65" TV at an 8-foot distance with no issues [3:1].

Resolution Considerations

Resolution plays a crucial role in determining the ideal TV size. Larger TVs require higher resolutions (e.g., 4K) to maintain image clarity and prevent pixelation [4:1]. If you're considering a larger TV, ensure it supports high resolutions to avoid compromising picture quality, especially for consoles like the PS5 [5:6].

Gaming Type and Preferences

The type of games you play can also influence the ideal TV size. For competitive FPS games, a smaller screen might help you notice enemies appearing at the edges more easily [4:2]. Conversely, racing games might benefit from a larger screen where peripheral information is less critical [4:2].

Personal Experience and Setup

Ultimately, personal preference and setup play significant roles. Some users prefer smaller screens for close-up PC gaming setups, while others opt for larger screens for console gaming in living rooms [2:2], [2:4]. It's important to consider how comfortable you feel with the screen size in your specific gaming environment [5:3].

Recommendations Beyond Discussions

If you're still unsure, visiting a store to test different TV sizes based on your typical viewing distance can be helpful [4:3]. Additionally, using online room measurement calculators can assist in determining the optimal size for your space [5:5].

ORIGINAL POST

Hello, I have doubts about the ideal size for a television that I am going to use only for gaming. Space is not a problem because it is a fairly large room.

Thank you very much

Viewing distance will dictate the size. I personally went with 65" for about 8'-9' distance.

Well if you have a distance 8+ feet I'd say 77 is the way to go. Otherwise a 65 can do. But the bigger the better in the most cases especially if it's a living room

I will be playing on a gaming chair so I can move around as much as I need to in a room of about 50 square metres

I have been reading on many expert websites and they all recommend a 40" to 55" tv. They all say not to go above this size even if you have space in the room for gaming only. What do you think?

So when you all are gaming, what’s the ideal screen size to play on?

Posted by Stretch407 · in r/gaming · 6 years ago

I’m in the market for a new gaming tv/monitor and honestly I’m just not sure what size is optimal for gaming. Currently I play on a 38in. but I’m considering going down to a 32? Not sure what specs I should particularly look for. Any help would be appreciated.

I use a 27" screen for my PC and PS4 Pro, and play while sitting at my desk. For this kind of set-up 27" is ideal.

Well are you thinking about PC or console. PC I sit close to my monitor so I play at 27” but console I sit pretty far so I play on a huge screen, not sure the in though

Console, but I have it positioned relatively close. I have a really long desk that has an entire PC setup, that my wife works on and I use the extra space to place my monitor and Xbox on as well. So I sit less than a foot away from the screen

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

That’s cool, I prefer 27” for that close, I don’t think I could go bigger. Maybe you are different though

The 24" monitor on my desk is plenty. But if you're sitting further away then bigger is better.

I would say depends how close you are to your set up I'm prettt close and the 38 is amazing

2 upvotes on reddit

Stretch407 · OP · 6 years ago

I’m not close to the tv at all, I play on a 38” but it’s only 720. The other TVs I own are all at least 1080, and the wife basically controls the 4K. So I’m ok with downsizing. I just really wanted to find like a “sweet spot” as far as size is concerned.

But then, I am old and nearsighted…

That answer depends on a lot of factors. Like what you play and if you are competitive and how far you sit from it.

Pretty much anything that you don't have to turn your head to see part of the screen though.

I sit about 8ft away and use a 65" with no issues, and could easily go up to 75"

Which is the best TV size for gaming?

Posted by jcgonzmo · in r/videogames · 5 years ago

I currently own a 55 inch TV that I use for my Switch and PS4 Pro. I am thinking about buying a 65 inch. However, I am hesitating, because the Switch still plays some games a 720p. The graphics could really downgrade with a bigger tv. Is this info right, or TV are good at upscaling games?

The only logical answer is actually a question:

How far away from the TV are you sitting ?...

6 feet

El_Topo_54 · 5 years ago

6 feet is pretty close... I say ~46" TV. Anything in the 50"+ will be visually uncomfortable to game on long-term.

It also depends what game you're talking about. If you're talking FPS, then you really want to notice enemies popping up from the edge of screen. (So not too large TV, preferably)

If you're talking racing, then you can go a little bigger, because most of the lesser important in-game stuff (Speed, HUD, lap times) is around the perimeter of TV display, so it's not the end of world to have to quiclky peek at some info while racing.

Well, there’s multiple factors to consider. So it’s not really easy to just say ‘this size of tv is the best for gaming.’ Obviously going bigger will get a bigger picture but if it’s the same resolution as a smaller tv, than the overall picture fidelity will be worse. If you can get a 4K or 8k or whatever the hell k they’re up to now, than it should be better for a larger picture, as in, the fidelity wouldn’t really be noticeable to the human eye. It will be as good looking as you’ll be able to perceive.

You also have to consider viewing distance. You could get a 65 inch tv, or even an 80 inch tv, but in either case it’s safe to say there will be a relative ‘optimal’ viewing distance so if your room will not accommodate that distance, than it won’t be a good fit.

I have a ps4 and a switch and game on a 55 inch tv from about ten feet away and I’m perfectly happy with it. Someday I’d love to get a 65 or 70 inch 4K tv in a darker better environment room at an optimal distance, but that’s in the future.

My two cents.

jcgonzmo · OP · 5 years ago

I am watching 6 feet form it.

Man_CRNA · 5 years ago

You’ll kind of know just by trying it. 6 feet I’d guess about 40-45 inches. Go to Best Buy and stand 6 feet from the tv sizes and pick the one that is comfortable to you. If you get a 65 inch tv and set it 6 feet from you... that’d give me a headache in about 5 minutes.

I play on an 80 inch 4k and the switch graphics are still rather good as are the PS4 with no huge notable loss in fidelity. I sit probably about 13'-15' away from it and the only real issue I run into which I didn't really think about is that text can be pretty tough to read from that distance but other than that I really enjoy it.

What do you guys think is a good tv size for gaming?

Posted by buniax · in r/gaming · 3 years ago

I recently bought a ps5 and a new tv that was supposed to be 43 inches for a good price and it’s specs, but Walmart refunded me and I did not want to wait so I opted to buy it for 50 inches same tv just bigger. I feel like it’s just a tad bit to big, it’s a good tv and everything but I’m thinking about switching it out, what do u guys think?

Depends on the space it's in, where you play from and how it's displayed. You might just get used to it or get the smaller one, benefits of the smaller one is the picture will be a tad better bc of the whole pixel thing (idk the tech talk but when I was getting mine the guy explained it in way more detail needed)

Best TV screen size for gaming?

Posted by Cuzco20 · in r/gaming · 6 years ago

I sit about 7.5 ft from the screen, and my current 50in screen seems good for first person shooters, but a little small for more immersive third person games. Generally speaking, would jumping up to a 55in screen hinder my FPS gameplay (making my eyes move to much and slowing reaction time), or is this just too subjective a question for a definitive answer?

Any knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks!

Which size TV do you think is optimal for console FPS gaming?

Posted by IIIbeer · in r/gaming · 3 years ago

My old 55" died on me recently, and I am getting a new one this weekend. I mainly use my TV for gaming, mostly for online FPS (Battlefield, RS Siege etc), some times some single player games but those are minority.

What size TV do you find out to be best online FPS gaming? I am thinking about getting 55" or 65" model, and farthest I can move my chairs are 2,2 meters. Would the 65" be too big too focus on games?

I know monitor would be best for performance, but that is out of question because I live in single room apartment and dont want to get a separate desk and all that.

Smaller Televisions are better for the same reason gaming monitors are smaller (27"- 32"). Less distance for your eyes to travel is better for reaction time. Smaller televisions have better response times as well.

Yeah, that's pretty standard right? My living room is about 3 and a bit metres across (wall to wall, long and narrow-ish rooms), TV against one and couch on the other. Having something like a 65 in a room that size would feel like the screen was pressing into my face. With a 42 I can see the whole screen and everything on it while barely having to move my eyes and not really needing to move my head. I don't need to be able to look into the soul of every pixel.

Everyone else seems not mentioning an important factor: how far away from the monitor (table depth). The rough estimations are:

60-70cm depth -> 24"-27"

80cm depth -> 27-32"

100cm depth -> 34"

I currently use a 24 inch (1080p) and I've been happy with it. I figured anything bigger than this would mean I'd have to move my eyes or my face to have to see the other side of the screen.

But recently, I saw my brother's 32 inch monitor with 4k resolution I was mind blown. The size also didn't seem that off putting and I've been wondering what the general consensus is.

What do you feel is the right size for gaming?

Since there is no demand in that segment as people usually go for 27 inch with QHD or 4k, there aren't many companies that make those kinds of monitors (especially in India).

Here are some of my recommendations from desertcart since they ship it to India and accept GPay (I don't know if the website is legit but do your own research and then decide)

Acer Nitro VG240YU

KTC 24" Gaming Monitor

Koorui Gaming monitor

Or else just search "24inch monitor qhd 144hz" in that website for more

AI Answer

best tv size for gaming

Key Considerations for TV Size for Gaming

  1. Viewing Distance: The ideal size depends on how far you sit from the TV. A general guideline is:

    • 32" to 43" for 4-6 feet away
    • 50" to 65" for 6-8 feet away
    • 70" or larger for 8+ feet away
  2. Resolution: Higher resolutions (4K) allow for larger screens without losing image quality. If you're gaming in 4K, you can comfortably go larger.

  3. Refresh Rate: Look for a TV with at least a 60Hz refresh rate for smooth gameplay. For competitive gaming, 120Hz or higher is preferable.

  4. Input Lag: Lower input lag (ideally under 20ms) is crucial for responsive gaming. Check reviews for gaming performance.

  5. HDR Support: High Dynamic Range (HDR) enhances color and contrast, providing a better visual experience in games that support it.

Recommendation: For most gamers, a 55" to 65" 4K TV is a great balance between size and viewing experience, especially if you sit about 6-8 feet away. Models like the LG OLED C1 or Samsung QLED Q80T offer excellent picture quality, low input lag, and good HDR support, making them ideal for gaming. If you're in a smaller space, a 50" model can still provide a great experience without overwhelming the room.
