Best Video Games for Family Night

TL;DR For a fun family night, consider games like Jackbox Party Pack, Overcooked, Mario Kart, and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. These games offer engaging multiplayer experiences suitable for various age groups.

Jackbox Party Pack

The Jackbox Party Pack series is highly recommended across multiple discussions for family gatherings. It offers a variety of mini-games that are both entertaining and easy to play, with Drawful 2 and Quiplash being standout favorites [1:1][1:2][3:1]. The games allow players to use their phones as controllers, making it accessible and fun for large groups. Some versions even have settings to make them more family-friendly [3:3].

Overcooked

Overcooked is another popular choice for family nights. It's a cooperative cooking simulation game where players must work together to prepare meals in increasingly chaotic kitchens [1:4][1:5]. The game's fast-paced nature and teamwork requirements make it both challenging and hilarious, perfect for family bonding.

Mario Kart and Mario Party

Classic Nintendo games like Mario Kart and Mario Party remain favorites for family gaming sessions. Mario Kart provides thrilling racing action that's suitable for all ages [2:4], while Mario Party offers a board game-like experience with mini-games that can be enjoyed by everyone [5:1].

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

This unique game involves one player defusing a bomb while others provide instructions from a manual they can't see. It requires communication and teamwork, making it an exciting option for family nights [1:4][2:5].

Hidden Gems and Other Recommendations

Other games mentioned include Towerfall, Broforce, Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed, and No Time To Explain [1:3]. For those looking for lesser-known titles, Ultimate Chicken Horse, Key-We, Moving Out, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and SUPER BOMBERMAN R 2 are suggested [5:1]. These games offer diverse gameplay experiences, from puzzle-solving to competitive challenges, ensuring there's something for every family member to enjoy.

ORIGINAL POST

I'm looking to get my family engaged into some video games this year. It doesn't matter the system, because I think between all of us we have one of each except for the Xbox One.

My defaults are Mario Kart Double Dash and Gang Beasts. It'd be nice to have about 3-4 more options, though. Kid friendly is preferred, although teen rating works well too.

Games with local co-op are obviously preferred as we all crowd around the tv.

Have you checked out Quiplash?

It's kind of along the lines of Cards Against Humanity or similar, using the game console as the 'public facing part of the game' while everyone does their own stuff on their phones via web browser.

The idea is that you all start the game, and are asked a bunch of crazy questions on your phone. Then, the 'game on the console' shows those answers to questions (sometimes changing the question for hilarity) and everyone gets to vote on which one is the best.

Best part? You can join up to vote and not play (iirc, you can even broadcast your game so other people can vote).

Jackbox Party Pack is good for similar reasons.

Games we love:

  • Towerfall. A really great multiplayer experience, that can be a lot of frustration and fun because of friendly fire.
  • Broforce isn't kid friendly, but teens will find it hilarious. And the custom map scene has kept the game interesting for years.
  • Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed is one of the best racers I've ever played. I enjoy Mario Kart, but Transformed does some things I really enjoy.
  • No Time To Explain. A shortish indie game, featuring a variety of really strange physics toys and humor.

Towerfall and NTTE come with the added benefit of being really easy to pick up and play.

Keep talking and no one explodes is unique where only one person can see the screen (bomb) and everyone else is communicating the bomb manual.

I agree with overcooked for funny coop that everyone understands.

Duck game is still fast stupid fun for 4 players.

And super Mario strikers is our chaotic sports game.

My wife, 2 kids and I are looking for some family-friendly gaming ideas. We often play Nintendo or board games but thought it might be a lot of fun to see what's on Steam. I've so far thought Terraria, Fall Guys and Keep Talking and Nobody Explode all look like a fun Friday night!

Looking for a family-friendly multiplayer game (for the holiday season)

Posted by saas_marketer · in r/ShouldIbuythisgame · 9 months ago

My family of 7 (adults) have got together for the holiday season and winters in Toronto means we're all staying indoors a lot.

My brother found famfun.app and we've got our very own family leaderboard going, so that's exciting leading up to christmas. We've literally spend hours with everyone in the living room playing on the TV.

Now that I know what this crowd gets excited by, I'm looking for family quiz/puzzle/trivia etc type of games which require some thinking, potentially able to team up to solve, and it's family friendly (parent's are a bit conservative).

I've got a PS5, Mac & a gaming PC - all can be hooked up to the living room TV.

Thank you for your help!

Which to play as a family?

Posted by trimBit · in r/JRPG · 2 months ago

Do you have recommendations on JRPGs that can be played together as a family? Any console is fine.

Specifically, I am looking for a great experience story-wise that is paired with not-to-deep-but-not-dumb mechanics, you can sit down to with two children (ages 9 and 7) and pass around the controller. Most games I am thinking about right now are either too dark in story or to involved with mechanics.

Glad to be reading your ideas!

There are some great wholesome JRPGs to play with children. I recommend these two:

  • The Cruel King and the Great Heron (Switch/PS4)

  • The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince (Switch/PS4)

The gameplay is simple, art is great, and the stories are wholesome.

Monster Hunter Stories features a young cast and rock paper scissors mechanics with monster taming. The only thing is be worried about is a fight breaking it when customizing the main character.

Kingdom Hearts has very easy controls and a company very invested in appearing child friendly involved in its creation. Great way to start conversations about feelings. (Ie, How do you think Riku felt when he thought his friend replaced him?)

Fantasy Life is very kid friendly! I would set rules about how long someone can play because time does really fly!

It's a little on the retro side, but I've been playing Grandia 1 (HD remaster), and my 7 y/o is super invested in it. It's very of its era (PS1/Saturn), and the voice acting isn't the best, but it's very colorful, optimistic, and light-hearted.

FF9 also feels fairly friendly to this age.

It’s offset, in my opinion, by the collaborative/cooperative nature of the game. If at least one person can play and introduce Pandemic reasonably well to newbies, then I can see how it might actually be easier than Catan — at least in the actual experience of fun play for families.

well there’s the classics like uno, monopoly, the game of life, and other board/card games. then there’s the ones that make you want to kill each other, like overcooked, cuphead, plate up, keep talking and nobody explodes (need printed instructions for that one). and then there’s the trivia/party games good for groups, jackbox party packs, and i personally love the game papa’s quiz.

Orbital. A rogue like ball breaker. The best part is you can play by tapping with one finger.

A quick rundown: a constantly rotating turret sits at the bottom of the screen. Tap to fire a missile. It has enough juice to travel about 1.5 lengths of the screen. Then it explodes into an expanding circle. When the circle’s edge comes in contact with the edge of the screen or another circle it stops expanding and a 3 appears. You need to bump it 3 times to make it go away. That’s one point.

There are 3 variations of the game. I like gravity where the bigger the circle, the more gravity it exerts on your missile. You can see the effect of the gravity by the distortion of the grid in the background.

Here’s a hint to the game. Fire a rebounding shot to get the missile to end up in the top corner. Holding your finger down gets it to shoot another missile after the turret moves slightly. You can create a small chain of small bubbles. After filling the top with small bubbles start ricocheting missiles among the balls.

My lifetime score is about 120 - been playing a dozen or so years. The game keeps a lifetime score and a separate “last 24 hours” list. There used to be a global list - people regularly scored in the thousands - no clue how except lots of patience.

Recap: I keep coming back every few months for the past dozen years. The game can be played with one hand and your thumb so you can hold your kid with the other. It’s very challenging.
