Final Thoughts
While these games are highly recommended, it's important to consider personal preferences and hardware compatibility when choosing VR games. Exploring different genres and mechanics can help players find what resonates most with them, whether it's action-packed shooters, immersive narratives, or creative sandbox experiences.
Mine are:
What about you all? Figured this might be a good way to help people who are looking to buy a game see if other people like it, as well as help people discover games they may not have seen!
I love Stride, how is Blade and Socery?
If you're the type of person who loves sandbox type games and immersive physics. It is the best out there (yes, even with the glitches and bugs). Big tip, the best way to play is to not just stand there swinging your arms, but to actually RP as a warrior battlemage, and you'll have the most fun I swear.
Also, there is a dungeon mode so you can also go on your own adventures.
The answer is yes
Honorable mentions: All of Dr.Beef’s ports but Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Doom 3 stand out better.
Tried out pistol whip for a bit, I found it really dull... I don't think the music resonates with me that well
Check out its modding community discord. It takes a bit effort to mod a song on the Quest, but playing the game with your own music makes it way more satisfying
Try their campaigns. You're also not supposed to shoot them all as soon as they spawn, there's a timing/rythm element to maximize your score.
That’s a pretty good lineup!
Contractors.
Blade and Sorcery
Song in the smoke
Stride
Larcenauts
Beat Saber
Pavlov Shack
Onward
Sairento
Espire 1

Yes thank you for putting sweet surrender in here. It needs more recognition so the devs will keep up the hard work they are already putting into it. One of the most community oriented vr devs I’ve come across and the game is beautiful. Most of the steam reviews complain about the game for it being to fast and easy to beat. It’s a damn rougue like game in its baby stages it’s not going to be perfect. At least it’s not game breakingly hard. People will yank the reviews of these games cause they are rougue like pros or something, and it’s not good for people who are just getting into the genre. Repetition comes with rougue like games, and they already combatted the main story being too easy to beat by adding a worldwide daily run, where the seed is the same for everyone and your score is put on a leaderboard in the lobby. I think it’s an amazing game. Well worth the money and I would’ve even spent more of it meant the devs could use more of my kk eh to make that game better. Solid list!
I played through Outer Wilds normally, then when I found out it had a VR mod I knew I had to try it. There’s something extra crazy about playing it normally then feeling like you physically jumped into that world via VR.
I was overwhelmed when I played an hour or two of it in pancake mode, and it is even more overwhelming in VR, makes one feel very small.
I had no idea Outer Wilds was modded for VR support. I have to try this for sure!
Me too, still really enjoying it. I do wish it had just a little more content but I'm only saying that 50+ hours in which is better than many VR games manage. The base mechanics and concept are so great and there's plenty of variety in the weapons/builds, I just wish there were a couple more enemy types or some kind of endless/endurance mode.
Stormlands was one of the games that convinced me to dive in. That and Hotdogs, Horseshoes, and Hands Grenades (H3VR). Too bad the end game for stormland is so-so. But h3vr gets consistent updates from the dev team and still going for 5 years. They even have “story” modes like return of the rotwieners and a coliseum among many other event type and trial type stuff. It’s a sandbox by nature but there is soooo much extra stuff in there. Plus the most variety of locomotion options, even a proprietary one called “arm swinger” that lets you act like your running with your arms and is supposed to be more natural. I use oculus so twin stick is preferable but if you use vive controllers the armswinger was designed around them. I suggest EVERYONE that likes playing around with guns get h3vr
Google earth vr is free but its a great experience, i cant recommend it enough
The all-time best VR experience for me.
I just wish there was a Quest 2 standalone version, and with multiplayer. I would die from orgasm.
I’ve played through this so many times on so many headsets. Never gets old.
Fun aside, I was in a huge 33x33ft play space to try Space Pirate Trainer Arena and then tried SuperHot. It totally breaks the game to be able to just walk all over, but so much fun literally running circles around the enemies using unintended cover and strategies.
Walkabout mini golf - essential. Great fun and beginner friendly.
Yupitergrad is also a fun short game but not essential.
As the levels progress you'll be fighting multiple enemies at once. The most manic times are when you get surrounded.
The gameplay loop is basically: Clear the room of enemies (3 to 10 baddies), pick an upgrade, enter new room, repeat for 30 levels with a boss encounter once every 10 levels. It's a roguelite so you'll get a different set of upgrades to choose from each run, but also earn currency which can be spent on unlocking/upgrading weapons for all future runs.
I've been diving into VR alot recently ( primarily because of work) and I was curious what games everyone felt has the best?
Bonus points if you have different choices for different genres!
Image is from Blade and Sorcery, simply because that was the first game I saw when I clicked on my Steam library just now!
ITR has the best feeling guns in VR I've experienced so far. I know people say H3VR and whatever else but ITR is my preference.
Sometimes I wish there was another game with the same level of gun fun but not as dreary as ITR. I can't always mentally prepare myself to delve into the highly stressful situations it presents lol
H3VR has the most realistic gun control but it's way too cumbersome for any action game.
For me it's Lone Echo. Pulling yourself around in Zero G with the ability to use micro thrusters for fine control. It's just really intuitive, deals with motion sickness perfectly, and isn't too complicated with zillions of extra buttons to remember.
oooh! This sounds interesting, i've played games with zero g before and struggled with the motion sickness associated with it!
I agree. Lone Echo and Lone Echo 2 are such VR masterpieces.
Still bummed about how echo VR went down, I had a lot of fun between talking to people in the lobby and getting good at the actual game
VTOL VR, I love flicking switches
Really? You hate floating hands? For me there is barely anything worse than seeing a virtual body that is not perfectly in sync with my real one. A week ago i've complleted Alyx for the first time and it was awesome. I think i would rate it the second best experience after Vivecraft
Half life Alyx has 2 features I'd love to see implemented all across VR.
their jump mechanic was simple, efficient, and never jank. And those Russel's... if you know you know...
I wish more games used it because most VR controllers have very few buttons and getting that additional input that's used up by sprinting would be useful
Agreed, but I quit it because it was so stressful. Absolutely adore the gunplay though, I wish I had a friend to play ITR2 with.
It's a must have game for anyone playing VR! It's very linear and repetitive, but you will sink hours into it!
I noticed you put Crisis VRigade in the free category, but that game costs $10?
Taken off, it was free when I got it
You got it for free? Lucky bastard, I paid the full 10, how?
I recreated this list in a google sheet for easier readability. I also added a formula that spits out a link to steam so people can look at screenshots and stuff.
A Township Tale is also fairly fun. It's still pre-alpha, but IMO holds up. Also free.
Why do people keep saying Half-life: Alyx is a billion dollar tech demo? It looks genuinely good and seems like it's going to be a full story game. Am I missing something?
It’s a joke, it’s obviously not a tech demo if it’s a full game with a huge staff and budget
Kinda like in Boneworks where you will sometimes see "What if this is just a tech demo?" written on the walls.
Yeah, but that’s a weird joke considering this list is aimed at “new people”
I'm glad you're joking, but that's what confuses me the most. I've seen multiple people say it's a glorified demo or a shitty VR short story, but they genuinely mean it. As soon as I saw the trailer, I knew it was gonna be a full-fledged, complete story experience. Idk where these people are getting this idea that it's a bad, money-grubbing, short game.
This is a super useful list, thank you!
First off, I thought to post this in general vr, but then again, not all games are supported equally on an valve index set, so I thought I'd ask here. Move to another forum if not appropriate.
I'm finally a happy customer (with some hiccups, exchanging one defect hmd that had pixel errors). Ever since I got my headset last december I have been playing regularly with it, mostly Skyrim VR (which is vast, giant, and has excellent mod support which put Bethesda to shame) and tabletop simulator (which had one buggy patch, but VR mode runs smoothly again since May and playing on VR is just that much more immersive).
I have also played a few other games (Alyx, Rick/Morty, Room, Tetris...) and since it is Summer Sale time, I wanted to ask you guys for your favorite games and why you like them. Or what games may not be your total favorite, but might be worth a look.
I’m tempted to put VRChat here but just be weary of it. There are tons of really cool user created worlds to explore and mess with and it’s all free but the general player base can be either really cool or incredibly toxic.
aircar (it's free)
A Fisherman's Tale
Jet Island
Megaton Rainfall
Moss
Outer Wilds (through an awesome mod)
Pavlov VR
Superhot VR
Until You Fall
Vertigo Remastered
Vox Machinae
Outer wilds has VR? Cooool
Yep pretty much. I just bounce between VRChat, Pavlov, Beat Saber while waiting for the higher quality games like Alyx.
Moss, pcars 2, alyx, superhot.
Then I got beatsaber and forgot everything else
In no real order:

Hang on. Outer Wilds is in VR?!
It's amazing too. Be the whole game in vr
Yeah! There's a mod called NomaiVR
Sorry, what is VR support? Alarms in my head went off when I saw you list Rogue Squadron.
I think he meant that there is some way you can play it with VR. e.g. Outer Wilds is not officially a VR game but there is a modding community for it (and it works better than Skyrim vanilla).
VTOL VR is a must have for flying immersion and feeling of controlling an airplane.
Portal Story’s: VR for portal games
In general? Half-Life Alex
"erm actually it's Half-life: Alyx and not Alex, The character itself is named Alyx Vance so the y in her name would make an upside-down lambda"
P2VR mod ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
never heard of the 3rd one
I've played The Lab. It's good for a VR tech demo thingie
Besides beat saber and the other top three VR games, what should I be looking at playing?
What are the "other top three VR games"?
Pavlov, best saber, VR chat, blade and sorcery according to most played on steam
Where do you see most played on steam for VR games only?
The vr mod for minecraft is pretty good, you’ll never experience so much joy, nostalgia and fear in such a short time span
Second this. Vivecraft is absolutely amazing.
I just got Vivecraft going with my quest.
Can confirm, it's pretty amazing. Can't wait to try it with mods too
Moss! It makes me sad that I never see it mentioned in threads like these. It's an unconventional one. You're not the protagonist; you're a benevolent force of nature of sorts, observing and manipulating the environment like a little diorama while you control the protagonist (a cute little mouse) through it all with the joystick/control pad. She communicates hints to you with gestures and sign language, it's really charming and fun. A little short, but they added a small free expansion and I believe there's a sequel on the way.
Elite:Dangerous. It has a steep learning curve but could take over a big chunk of your life
Tell me about it. Ever since I tried it it has consumed me, first buying a Thrustmaster T16000m, then upgrading to the Thrustmaster Warthog and Slaw RX-Viper pedals, and now building a dedicated cockpit using a car seat I got from a wrecker/junk yard and upgrading my PC and headset.
Nothing like cruising around the local bubble with Netflix running in OVRdrop. Now I'm prepping for visits to Colonia, Sagittarius A and Beagle Point before circumnavigating the galaxy.
I am obsessed, and my wallet is crying.
Edit: Also I should clarify, the cockpit isn't just for Elite, but also for DCS: World and Il2 Sturmovik which are also great in VR.
Someone made a mod with holographic buttons so you can play with the vive controllers
I couldn't get into ED in VR. I enjoy the game, but there's too much downtime when traveling that it just gets boring if I don't have something to do on an alternate screen.
This. Hot dogs, horseshoes, and hands grenades is a fantastic gun simulator. They're also in the process of adding TF2 weapons!
After over a year I finally completed last mission and with clear mind I can assure you this is best possible, most immersive fun and climatic game to play on quest 3 and easily in top 3 of best PCVR games out there
I hope more developers will try to make this type of masterpiece in future
For anyone who didn't try it I really recommend it it's absolute diamond
Can't wait to buy into the radius 2 hope it'll be even better this I have no idea how
I really thought I’d like this game and really wanted to, but it just didn’t give me that spark. It’s definitely a good game tho, might check out ITR2 when it releases
Well I guess it's not for everyone, for me great VR game gonna be the one when while playing for more then hour I geniuenly forget about reality and start subconsciously believe I'm in this word
Like whoever you get shot someone swings at you in game and you twitch irl
Or shoot gun and it gives you goosebumps
For me that game did all that many many times
It's one out of 2 games ever for me that ever gave me that feeling, second one is no man's sky vr
I tried twice to get into this game, both times I deleted it after 30 or so minutes. There’s just something fundamentally not very fun about it. What is it that makes so many people say it’s one of the best Vr games ever? I really want to like it and give it another chance
Difficult to explain. But for me it feels like I am really there. You have to organize and plan your actions like you would do in real life. Whenever I find something valuable gives me the same feeling like finding money in the streets in real life. Cleaning your guns is like meditation. Buying stuff in the game is like shopping online. I go through the same decision process. So the sense of being there is unbelievable.
And to think that I only bought the game because I wanted to try a VR shooter. Also the first 30 min I didn’t like it and quit. Give it one more try and got hooked after the first mission.
I absolutely loved the game-play and resource management and was ready to name it one of my top games, but was disappointed with how thin the story line ended up being. It made it feel fetch-questy. There was so much potential in the build up but it fell into a lazy trope :(
I like it so much that I bought a haptics vest and sleeves pretty much just for this game. Every time I see the "Happiness for all..." quote at the beginning, I'm reminded of one of my favorite books, Roadside Picnic.
For your tastes, sure. I played a few hours of it and did not care for it at all, definitely not the most fun game for me.
Anyone have updates on how itr2 is coming along? I’ve been waiting for it to get proper release but will jump on it if it’s gotten the bugs worked out
I love it, I've played 90 hours of the early access for ITR 2 and I haven't experienced bugs like that really. I remember early on there was the ladder bug (ladders killed ya), one bug increased my security level for no reason, and currently the Outskirts needs more optimization, but I haven't seen any show stopping bugs (I could've missed a big current one though).
As far as co-op goes, I think that's still rough, but I'm a solo player. There's probably a million bugs in co-op that I just haven't experienced.
There's no story at all yet, so if ya need a story or want all the mechanics to be finished then it can't hurt to wait more before jumping into ITR 2. Cleaning weapons is about to have a nice update in 2 weeks or so where things can be disassembled, they haven't put in the artifacts we can wear for buffs yet, still some more locations to come, so they got a year or so left of development before 1.0 maybe.
The new maps are nice, especially the Outskirts, I think it's really impressive. And enemy AI is way way better, I like playing with their difficulty cranked and with more enemies spawned. The outfitting system is super innovative, you can make your setup exactly how ya like.
The biggest annoyance is I like to chainsmoke in ITR 1 but in ITR 2 the cigs have collision with the weapons so it's annoying to smoke while aiming a rifle for now (I'm sure they'll fix it eventually). Also cigs don't help solve your hunger like in ITR 1 and I wish they did.
I didn’t know cigs helped with hunger in 1!
Thanks for all the input. I guess I’ll keep on waiting for it to be built out a bit more.
Not sure man ik right now it has alot of bugs
Maybe try ITR discord channel or something
Same, downloaded and played several hours, then deleted it. Did that process again. The third time I tried it, it stuck and I couldn't get enough of it. I've put 12 hours into itr2 and can't wait for the full release
Give me your top 3 or top 5 or top whatever you want. I just want to hear what VR games people are playing beyond the obv hla, beat saber, ...
Firewatch and Outer wilds mods. Genuinely 2 most polished VR experiences I had.
OUTER WILDS HAS VR? :O
gosh i wanna play that now. I wish i could re-experience the story again. So good!
I'm so glad I discovered the NomaiVR mod before I played Outer Wilds. Hands down my favorite VR experience.
I've never heard of NomaiVR, are the two games related? Should I play Nomai first?
I didn't like Outer Wilds, but maybe it was because my Rift S was glitching terribly. I might give it another try.
I loved Firewatch on a flat screen, should I replay it in VR?
Outer Wilds is a game that'll stick with me for the rest of my days, and playing the DLC in VR has been an absolute treat. Its NomaiVR mod is also so polished that it feels like it's official
I played most mainstream games. I really liked Boneworks, Blade and sorcery and Onward (PC before the fucked up and made it quest compatible). But the only two i keep coming back to and personally think are the single best in their niche are
VTOL VR
Amazingly fun arcade-ish flight Sim. Build from the ground up for VR interactions. Flip switches, adjust dials, press buttons. No joystick necessary. Only motion controllers. Extremely dedicated community continuously pumping out maps, missions, skins and mods. Basically endless replayability.
And
Into the Radius
Basically stalker vr. Set in a world where a mysterious entity covered a large area in a thick fog and plays with natural laws inside the zone. You must explore, fight, and survive there. Hands down the best survival mechanics in VR. You have to eat your food by sticking a knive in a can, load each individual bullet into your magazines and even maintain and clean your weapons.
I JUST started playing Into The Radius. I ran through the tutorial a few nights ago, and stayed playing for real yesterday. I was up until 3 am. Thankfully I'm off work today! The game is amazing so far. I don't remember ever being so legitimately creeped out by a video game before. I love solid world building and atmosphere in a game, and so far out looks like ITR has that in spades.
I’m with you in this. But I also have the third one - Compound vr.
BeamNG has VR support? I may need to get that, then. I've been interested in getting a VR game that would let me casually drive through a big ol' map, and I know BeamNG has some big ones from modders
I know I've heard really good things about it. I'm not into mainstream VR games like beatsaber or gorilla tag so I was weary of HLA at first. But it's on my backlog of games.
Totally agree and at launch I wasn't blown away by hl2. Very few bosses and weapons and I got sick of vehicle sections long before they were over but in vr it blew me away And the vehicle sections were the most fun.
Hey All, I made a video going over my top 10. I'll link it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syn27yH6-F0
But I'll also write it out below in case you don't give a shit about watching videos.
10. Wanderer My 2022 Game of the Year. A mind-bending time-travel adventure packed with stunning visuals, creative puzzles, and a Forrest Gump-like way of weaving history into a gripping sci-fi story. With Fragments of Fate dropping soon, I couldn’t be more excited. I think its gonna kick ass and fix the combat problems this one suffered from.
9. Pistol Whip One of my first VR purchases, and I’m still playing it years later. This is rhythm-shooter perfection—bullet-hell action synced to music in a way only VR can pull off. With endless content, mods, and a gameplay loop that never gets old, it’s easily the best rhythm game in VR.
8. Phasmophobia Clunky VR implementation? Sure. But damn, I love this game. The ultimate blend of horror and teamwork, where terror fuels your desire to gather evidence. Phasmo nails immersion even with the jank. Stuff like the ghost whispering back through a spirit box or using the Ouji board. Its just the pulse-pounding and damn good fun. It's been my most-played VR game for two years, and I still can’t get enough.
7. Vertigo 2 Pure VR brilliance. This wacky, Half-Life-esque shooter is bursting with creativity—branching paths, wild weapons, and some of the most unique mechanics in VR. A 10-12 hour campaign packed with secrets, insane boss fights, and an addictive upgrade system. And with Into the Aether DLC dropping soon, I’m more than ready for another trip into madness.
6. Batman: Arkham Shadow Last year’s Game of the Year for me. This isn’t just a great VR game—it’s a full-fledged, polished experience. The melee combat is unmatched, the story is gripping, and it proves the Quest can deliver AAA-quality games. You don’t just play as Batman—you become Batman.
5. Dirt Rally 2.0 Hundreds of hours in, and it’s still the most immersive game I’ve played. The physics, the feedback, the thrill of sliding around a corner at breakneck speeds—it’s unmatched. This game even helped me diagnose a low tire pressure IRL. Pair it with a direct-drive wheel, and it’s as close as you can get to rally racing without totaling your car.
4. Walkabout Mini Golf The best mini-golf experience. Period. Walkabout captures real-life mini-golf but removes the downsides—no waiting, no bad angles, just pure fun in impossible, dreamlike courses. The physics are flawless, the DLC is a steal, and it’s the ultimate chill VR game. I own it on every platform, and I regret nothing.
3. Demeo A perfect marriage of board gaming and VR. Strategic, challenging, and endlessly replayable, with five massive campaigns and deep team synergy. Every session feels fresh, and I’ve poured 200+ hours into it. But with BattleMarked on the horizon, my Demeo days might be numbered—because that sequel looks insane.
2. Resident Evil Village The game that turned me into a horror junkie. I avoided horror games my whole life—until this. It’s pure survival horror, where every bullet matters, and every corner hides something terrifying. The boss fights, the tension, the sheer production quality—this is what VR horror should be.
1. Half-Life: Alyx Still the king. The smoothest, most polished VR experience ever made. The Half-Life series is why I bought a headset, and Alyx delivered. But what keeps it at the top? The mods. Return to Rapture, Levitation, Gunman Contracts—mods so good, they rival full games. If you haven’t dived into the Workshop, you’re missing out.
Here’s mine — I’m way more into casual, chill VR experiences these days, so this list leans into that:
Glad you put wanderer in that list, not a lot people talk about it and I couldn't believe some stuff that were happening in that game. The whole time travel is just amazing concept.
I think MSFS is the big one that should be on any top 10 list for VR. Also, Skyrim, FO4, Beat Saber. Well, there's a reason why these lists are subjective. It would be difficult for me to name the top 10. I'm partial to Hellblade Senua and would have a hard time not having it on a top 10 list and same thing with Alien Isolation (PCVR mod) and HL2 (VR mod). I liked RE 7 more than RE 8, but I could see the distinction since RE8 had an official VR port on PSVR2 and RE7 only has PSVR and PCVR mod. I would also put Green Hell and Grimlord up there in my top 10 and I'm sure lots of people would fight me on those two being included.
Yeah that’s what makes it tough haha. When in doubt, I went with the games I just play the most.
No Beat Saber?
Not a huge music game person, but I do love me some pistol whip
Did you play:
Asgard's Wrath 2
Moss
Red Matter
? \
I don't see its in your list
Best VR games
