Sound Quality and Features

When choosing wireless speakers for home use, sound quality is a primary consideration. The Harman Kardon Go Play 3 is noted for its remarkable bass and theater-like experience [1]. For those seeking deep bass and clear sound, the JBL Boombox 3 and Ultimate Ears Hyperboom are recommended [2:4]. The Sonos Era 300 provides an immersive Dolby Atmos sound, ideal for cinematic experiences [2:3].

In summary, the best wireless speakers for home depend on individual preferences regarding sound quality, smart features, design, and budget. Whether opting for a high-end model like the Sonos Era 300 or exploring DIY options, there are numerous choices available to cater to diverse needs.

It's a kick ass speaker for home use. If the sub on the bottom had a protective metal grill then I would haul this thing with me on the go. But Ive yet to see another home speaker that sounds as good as the Go Play 3 for the same price.

Best Large Bluetooth Speaker

Posted by denis_chang · in r/BestBluetoothSpeaker · 7 months ago

Lately, I’ve had the chance to review over 200 different Bluetooth speakers, and I thought it would be helpful to share what I found. If you're looking for a powerful, high quality speaker for home, outdoor parties, or events, here’s a guide to help you pick the right one.

What to Consider Before Buying:

  • Sound Quality – Look for deep bass, clear mids, and crisp highs.
  • Battery Life – If you need portability, go for at least 15+ hours of playback.
  • Connectivity – Bluetooth 5.0 or higher ensures better range and stability.
  • Durability – Waterproof or rugged design is a must for outdoor use.
  • Smart Features – Wi-Fi, voice control, and app support can enhance the experience.
  • Portability vs. Power – Larger speakers offer better sound but may be less portable.

Top 3 Large Bluetooth Speakers

Ultimate Ears Hyperboom (Best Overall) – Powerful bass, long battery life (24 hrs), and adaptive EQ that adjusts sound based on surroundings. Splash-resistant and supports multi-device pairing.

JBL Authentics 500 (Best Smart Speaker) – Retro-styled with 270W of immersive 3.1 channel audio. Features Wi-Fi, Alexa/Google Assistant, and JBL One app customization.

Sonos Era 300 (Best for Parties) – Dolby Atmos support with six drivers for immersive 3D audio. Works with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and multi-room setups for a surround-sound experience.

I suggest checking this page to explore more options. You’ll find a handy filter to help you choose based on budget and features.

Let me know if you have any questions or experiences to share it might help others too!

  • JBL PartyBox 710 (Powerful, Party, Splashproof) - A high-performance Bluetooth speaker with dual 2.75" tweeters, and 8" woofers. Features customizable party lights, IPX4 splash resistance, and wheels for portability.
  • Sony SRS-XV800 (Karaoke, Long-Lasting, Portable) - A powerful omnidirectional speaker with five tweeters, and deep bass. Offers 25-hour battery life, USB-C quick charge, IPX4 splash resistance, and built-in wheels for portability.
  • JBL PartyBox 300 (Loud, Vibrant, Versatile) - A 120W Bluetooth party speaker with dynamic LED light effects synchronized to music. Features Bluetooth, USB, and RCA inputs, plus a rechargeable battery for up to 18 hours of playtime.

Heos AVR, the only "real" 5.1 system with support for wireless surrounds. Both Dolby True HD and DTS MA, you can use fronts/center and sub of your choice(will sound better than any soundbar even if you choose cheap speakers, but you can use for example 2x Heos 1 as wireless surrounds. In this system you can also upgrade as normally a soundbar doesn't allow.

Haven't looked at musicast but from the looks it works the same way the HeosAVR does so that seems good. Just stay away from soundbars unless it's really really the only option.

I never used them. I never researched them. So I'm not recommending them.

I'm simply pointing out that they exist. Buy them at your own risk.

wifi speaker recommendation?

Posted by bufferOverflowCanuck · in r/homelab · 3 years ago

Hey everyone. I am looking for a wifi speaker that will play nice with all my devices and sound not terrible.

Ideally it would be able to play audio from my phone (Spotify / VLC from media on the NAS), and if my computers (windows, linux, mac) could select it as a speaker for output so i can use the mac mini on the TV to play louder than built in TV speakers for shows, or so I can create playlists on my laptop and have them play on the speaker.

Thanks for any help you can offer! currently looking at getting a used Sonos One... but figured you all might know better.

I have a Dennon receiver with Bluetooth, hooked up to some Klipsch speakers and a sub....and just stream from my tablet which has all my music and apps on it. Sounds great. Bonus is that it's also the audio for my TV and XBOX.

There are enough inputs to also connect my PC and Mac Mini to it, but I have a separate set of speakers for them.

Most of Sonos' products aren't really geared toward being PC speakers.

The newer soundbars can do it, but you have to use either optical (that most PCs don't have) or some sort of HDMI-to-eARC converter (the HDFury Arcana is the most popular) to get audio into the thing.

You should be able to use Airplay with your Mac, but otherwise basically wind up with a 3rd-party app capturing sound on your PC and streaming it (which is pretty awful for latency). A scarce couple of the battery-powered devices (Move, Roam) do Bluetooth, but I've not used it enough on my Move to comment on functionality or latency.

A similarly small number of their devices have 3.5mm or RCA line input connectors, but as those are really designed for another purpose entirely (getting audio from a turntable or other external audio source and streaming it to your other Sonos speakers over WiFi), you'd be dealing with both digital-analogue-digital-analogue conversion, and the additional latency (it's not much, but it's there). Also those devices are at the high-cost end of the Sonos range.

It's just really not their game (and a reason for a lot of returns of Sonos speakers, which lets people like me buy them open-box for super cheap). As a device to stream music (from the Internet, a NAS, etc) where your phone's only involvement is as the remote control it's great. For every other attempted use (streaming from phone directly, streaming from PC, etc) it always seems like a bit of a hack, and never really works as well as you'd like.

Our of all the things you list, Spotify (which does work directly on the speaker) is the only one you're going to have fun with.

Thanks /u/qupada42 , any good recommendations for a speaker that might do what I am trying to do?

Probably any half-decent Bluetooth speaker from a reputable brand would be fine. If you wanted to try a Sonos (because the extra streaming functionality is really, really nice), the Roam ($$) or Move ($$$$) are both pretty good devices.

The Move is a bit of a chonky boi though (it's really more a "luggable" to use around the house), where the Roam is a portable you can take with you on the go too.

A little more hacky option. If you have a spare raspberry pi, could be to load up balenaOS, use balenaSound, and a DAC hat from say HifiBerry (not required if the onboard audio from the pi is good enough for you), and hook that into a set of speakers you already have. If you run each instance of balenaSound as a master, you can connect to each one individually via Bluetooth to have it act as a Bluetooth speaker, otherwise they work as a normal network speaker, and can be seen by programs that look for them as endpoints.

I have 3 of these running in my apartment (kitchen, living room, bedroom), each running as a master:

Raspberry pi 3b+ with a POE hat with passthrough GPIO pins HifiBerry DAC+ DSP.

I would definitely recommend looking it up for your use case before diving into it, and making sure you are willing to go that route, and if you already have good speakers, why replace them with something else?

bufferOverflowCanuck · OP · 3 years ago

I have a pi 3 and Zero W that arent currently being used (the pi 3 had a cool server use but I replaced it with a Intel Edison and a breakout board, those things are legit)...

this might be a really good option for me, thanks. I am going to do some googling on balenaOS and balenaSound.... i might ping you in the future if i have any questions....

Never would I think I would suggest this but Amazon Echos do this pretty well. Its nice being on Spotify, pressing the devices tab and then being able to go straight to the Echo. Unsure of VLC or other 3rd party support for different media types but this does seem like an easy cheap way to do it with bonus microphones always recording you.

bufferOverflowCanuck · OP · 3 years ago

thanks /u/mac2810 , you might be right on this one. they are simple and affordable. I am going to google to see if they can be disconnected from the internet in their settings or something and maybe check out reviews for people who ran them with NAS' or other media players.

Best Smart Speakers for Home

Posted by myinvitelink · in r/smarthome · 4 months ago

I'm looking for a smart speaker for my home. It should have good sound quality and be loud enough for a room. I want it to come with a smart assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant, and support both app and voice control.

Since I have Wi-Fi, it should stay connected all the time without issues. I also prefer something that's compact and not bulky. It must be from a trusted brand, and price is not a problem for me — I just want something that works really well.

If you use or know a great smart speaker, please suggest it. I'm open to recommendations.

Not personally but I have always hated iOS and I'm actually a mobile technician so I can take my pick of devices, in recent years it's always been a Sony Xperia but it's all down to your preference I guess

I have tons of stuff linked in, my TV, switchbot air purifier, blink cams and doorbell, simpled lock, hive heating, hue lights, my washer, speakers, roborock vaccum and a few other bits like universal ir remote to control my Aircon and amp, it all works seamlessly through alexa

Just get some sort of Bluetooth receiver for your amp and connect an echo dot to it, (I have a loxjie a30 which has Bluetooth in) that way you can use any speakers you want, works a treat for me on my current zensor 1s (and will also work as well on my upcoming magnepan lrs and morduant short pagent2)

I am running my whole house audio as Sonos amps with both Alexa and Google devices for voice input.    I also have Alexas linked together in a few areas for music.

The linked together alexas are nice in that I can say "play music in the bedroom", and all 3 of my Alexa devices synchronize to play the same music.  Even though the speakers are small, it sounds pretty good.  Amazon makes larger speakers if you need, though I have not tried them.

My Google devices work a little better when connected to Sonos.  It was awkward to get Google's YouTube music to play well with the Sonos app, but I eventually got it.  Once working, I find Google to be a slightly better experience for two reasons:

The first is that YouTube music has playlists and music for just about anything you can imagine, and it understands what you are asking for, even if what you are asking for is weird.  For example, "play Ramen restaurant music".

The second is that you can set it up so that each Google device in your home is paired with a specific zone, so you don't have to specify the zone with each request.   So, if you say, "hey Google, play music" and you are in the living room, it knows to play through the amp that runs your living room speakers, where with Alexa if you do it it will play through the tiny Alexa speaker instead of the amp unless you add the extra phrase "...in the living room group".

Maybe Alexa supports this capability as well but I have not seen it.   If you only have a small setup, though, it probably does not matter, but if you have different zones such as individual bedrooms, living area, outside, etc, then it is really nice not to have to constantly remember to tell ot which zone to play.

Both Alexa and Google have bad days where they just get finicky, and then magically fix themselves for reasons unknown, maybe software updates got pushed.

I find Alexa better for making automations "routines", as it recognizes way more of my smarthome devices.

Based on your original posting of looking for compact, and what seems like the desire for the most simple solution, I would recommend Alexa for its ease of use and perhaps slightly better sound quality through the built in speakers, and the ease of which you can synchronize with future Alexa devices if you want to expand without making this into a bigger project.  If your needs were grander, I might recommend differently.

If you're looking for something that really delivers solid sound quality, I'd recommend the JBL Charge 5. It’s got a pretty neutral sound profile, so it works well for most audio content, whether you're playing music, podcasts, or watching videos. The PartyBoost feature is also nice for pairing multiple JBL speakers if you ever want to expand the setup

1 upvotes on reddit
bobthriller2 · OP · 7 months ago

That sounds good, but I’m not looking for something too big. I’m mainly using it indoors, so maybe something smaller but still good quality?

In that case, the Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) could be a great option. It's more compact than the JBL, but still delivers clear and balanced sound with decent bass. Plus, it has PositionIQ technology, which adjusts the sound depending on its orientation. whether it’s standing, lying flat, or hanging. This ensures optimal sound no matter where you place it in the room

Suggestions for a home speaker?

Posted by United-Classroom-934 · in r/Bluetooth_Speakers · 7 months ago

Hey everyone! I’m on the hunt for a new Bluetooth or Wi-Fi speaker for my living room. Six years back, I bought a Megaboom from Ultimate Ears, and it was a great speaker, but it’s starting to have some serious battery problems. I’ve been doing some research and testing out different speakers, but I’m still not sure which one to pick.

I’m looking for something with a powerful and clear bass, without any distortion. I want a speaker that delivers a great sound quality, with no connectivity issues. As for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, I’m not really an expert, but I understand that Wi-Fi speakers tend to have better sound quality and can stream lossless from Apple Music. If that’s true, I’d be more inclined towards a Wi-Fi speaker.

The Phantom 2 98db is the best speaker I’ve heard so far, but I’m not ready to spend at least 1000 euros on a speaker just yet. I’ve also tried out some other speakers that I really liked, like the B&O Beolit 20, the HK Onyx Studio 8 (the studio 9 was released recently, but I haven’t had a chance to test it yet), the HK Aura, and the Devialet Mania.

Oh, and I don’t really like JBL, so I’m not really looking for any suggestions from that brand.

Let me know what you think!

What's your budget?

I have an unusual setup with a mix of Sonos, Apple, Bose, and Bowers-Wilkins WiFi speakers, and they're all damned good. If I was limited to just ONE speaker, though, I'd pick the Sonos Move 2 (I have a pair), since the clarity, detail, and bass are damned good. And, it's portable.

I do have a B&O A1 Gen. 2 I use for traveling and white noise, and it's remarkably good. But it's not WiFi (BT only), and it doesn't get as loud as my other WiFi speakers.

If your budget allows it, look into the Brane X. I demoed one in a store and was impressed. And they're routinely on sale for $400. It will likely be my next speaker to add to the boat's WiFi setup.

United-Classroom-934 · OP · 7 months ago

For portable speakers with long battery life, I have a pair of Sonos Move 2s, and their superb. I got mine as factory refurbs from Sonos last year for less than 1/2 what they sell for now, and they do have a 25% off sale going on right now. I can absolutely recommend the Move 2s if they're not too big for you. They're not really "travel" speakers, per se, but they do "move."

Shame you've counted Jbl out. Their Authentics range is pretty good...

I have a few Libratone Zipp2's and Zipp Mini's, which in my subjective experience are excellent feature rich speakers...been around for a while but I love mine!

As mentioned already, the Brane X could be a good option, too.

Check ranges from Audio Pro, Denon, Pure, Echo Studio, Bower and Wilkins...though some may not be portable....

Hope this helps and happy hunting!👍🏽😊

I have a JBL Flip Essential and looking for something bigger for playing music at home. I feel a overqualified speaker would be good since I wouldn't have to max out the volume and get a good sound with something like say JBL Xtreme 4. Battery driven preferred as it is easy to carry around. I was looking up the Edifier D12 and while it is good value it requires AC power all the time.

Honestly, If you’re looking for a budget-friendly speaker that still bumps, the JBL Flip 6 is a solid choice. It’s waterproof, has decent bass for the price, and lasts a full day. I found a deal on DHgate that’s way cheaper than Amazon. I was skeptical but reviews look legit. If anyone wants the DHgate deal I found, happy to DM it or drop the link if mods are cool with it.

You got that right ! He's been trying to convince me it's a good speaker but I'm truly not convinced. I've heard it and it's cheap phony sounding. The sound quality on the U-BOOM X sounds plastic to me.

You're so right, he thinks that cheap Uboom X sounds good 😊 lol If he is amazed at the way it sounds just think what he'd feel with a real Bluetooth speaker playing for him !

JBL speakers for home

Posted by Then_Mastodon_6749 · in r/JBL · 3 months ago

Hello everyone currently deciding to get some speakers for my home. I am considering getting some good speakers to hae for a bbq and some speakers for the tv room etc. I am highly considering JBL since I've heard good things about them and auracast. Other option would be Sonos but theyre more expensive. Just wanted to know how good has the experience been using JBL and if you recommend them for multi room use and possible auracast for a party etc.

Depends how much you wanna spend per speaker You could make extremely cheap surround systems out of go 4s or throw xtreme 4s around The sky is the limit unless you have a budget

Hmmmm I am not sure as to what my budget would be, right now I am looking to buy a JBL Charge 6 and maybe a JBL bar system for a tv room I think I would probable be thinking of keeping it under 300 per speaker. Charge 6 I found a good deal for 100 usd (Well it seems like a good deal in my country since it is like 250 normally)

For a starter I think you would really enjoy the boombox 3, its extremely great indoors with its high quality speaker layout while still being noticeably portable so you can bring it around wherever you want.

Hmmmm interesting. boombox seems a little too big for my needs but will look into it I'm sure boombox 4 will be coming soon

I don’t recommend the wait - it will be more expensive (without much advantage), will look uglier and you’ll still have to wait quite a lot

best wireless speakers for home

Key Considerations for Choosing Wireless Speakers:

  1. Sound Quality: Look for speakers with good bass response, clarity, and overall balanced sound. Brands like Sonos, Bose, and JBL are known for their audio quality.

  2. Connectivity Options: Ensure the speakers support Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Some may also offer compatibility with voice assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant.

  3. Battery Life: If you opt for portable wireless speakers, check the battery life. Aim for at least 10-12 hours for uninterrupted use.

  4. Multi-Room Capability: If you want to play music in multiple rooms, consider speakers that can be grouped together, like Sonos or Amazon Echo devices.

  5. Design and Size: Choose a design that fits your home decor and a size that suits your space. Some speakers are compact and portable, while others are larger and meant for stationary use.

  6. Durability and Water Resistance: If you plan to use the speakers outdoors, look for models with water resistance (IPX rating) and durable construction.

Recommendations:

  • Sonos One: Excellent sound quality, smart assistant integration, and multi-room capabilities make it a top choice for home use.

  • Bose SoundLink Revolve+: Known for its 360-degree sound, portability, and robust battery life (up to 17 hours), it's great for both indoor and outdoor use.

  • JBL Charge 5: Offers powerful sound, a long battery life (up to 20 hours), and is water-resistant, making it ideal for outdoor gatherings.

  • Apple HomePod Mini: If you're in the Apple ecosystem, this speaker provides great sound quality and seamless integration with Apple devices.

Choose based on your specific needs, whether it's sound quality, portability, or smart features!
