The BMW iDrive system is a sophisticated infotainment interface that integrates various vehicle functions and entertainment options. However, the features available can vary significantly based on the model year and specific configuration of the vehicle.
Missing Features and Configuration
One common issue with the iDrive system is missing features, such as navigation or Bluetooth options, which might be expected based on the owner's manual but are not present in the vehicle [1:1]. This discrepancy often arises because the manual includes all possible options, not just those installed in a particular car
[1:2]. To determine what features are actually included, it's advisable to check the vehicle's specific options via a VIN decoder
[1:9].
Customizing iDrive with BimmerCode
BimmerCode is a popular tool for customizing the iDrive system. Users have reported coding features like opening/closing windows and sunroofs with a long key press, displaying digital speed, and adjusting sound profiles [2:1]
[2:2]. These customizations allow owners to tailor their vehicle's functionality to better suit their preferences.
Comparison with Apple CarPlay
Many BMW owners opt to use Apple CarPlay over the native iDrive system for its seamless integration with their daily activities. CarPlay allows users to continue using apps like Spotify and Waze without interruption and offers superior voice navigation through Siri [3:1]
[3:2]. However, some users report lag and audio dropouts when streaming via CarPlay
[3:4].
iDrive Touch and CarPlay Integration
There are limitations to the integration of iDrive touch features with CarPlay. For instance, drawing letters with your finger into the controller doesn't work with CarPlay apps [4:1]
[4:4]. This limitation has led some users to switch back to the iDrive system for certain applications, such as searching within Spotify
[4:3].
Researching Vehicle Features
For those interested in purchasing a BMW, tools like bimmer.work and mdecoder.com provide detailed information about a vehicle's build specifications by entering the VIN [5:1]
[5:3]. These resources can be invaluable for understanding what features are included in a specific vehicle before making a purchase.
In summary, while the BMW iDrive system offers a wide range of features, understanding and customizing these features requires familiarity with the vehicle's specific configuration and potentially using third-party tools like BimmerCode. Additionally, integrating systems like Apple CarPlay can enhance the user experience, though it may come with some limitations.
Hello, we've baught used 2013 X3 and multiple features that are talked about in the owners manual and online are missing from IDrive such as navigation and some bluetooth options. Literally when we press the "NAV" button it does nothing and the navigation option in the main menu is non-existent. Any help or ideas as to what we could do would be great! Thanks!
In 2013, BMW used the same iDrive panel on the car regardless if it had Navigation or not. If it isn't listed in the iDrive screen, the car was not equipped with it. There is only one variation of the owner's manual and it lists all the options, not just the options equipped on a particular vehicle. Cost effective, but annoying too!
The vehicle's options are vastly configurable. The printed owers manual is more of a general manual with all the stuff... It does usually state certain specifications may not apply.
However, go through the vehicle's own owners manual on the iDrive. That shows the stuff in the car (specifically for the options in the car).
Anyway, as mentioned already, your vehicle does not seem to have Navigation. Bluetooth functionality may be limited, again based on specification (i.e. pairing and calls are possible but unable to play music via Bluetooth).
Just a bit of a heads up: there are websites which shows the vehicle's options when you enter the VIN (but it is somewhat technical jargon and ain't straightforward if you ain't too savvy with their nomenclature).
Is there any way you could link me to the mentioned website? That would be fantastic thank you
Edit: And also, while we were test driving it the employee managed to get NAV to work. Also, it has the NAV button on the control surface. We have to go back to the dealership for other reasons so we can ask then as well
The Navigation worked during the test drive but at present it does not appear on the main menu? Very perplexing!
Strange that it worked during test drive. Post your list of options from the post vin decoder. Bluetooth may be as simple as a coding option, or adding a Mic and antenna and coding Vin decoder will also show nav options
Just off Google: https://www.mdecoder.com
Just because it’s in the book doesn’t mean it’s in your car. Bmw isn’t gonna make a book for every variation of options they give. Unless the car was built with the navigation option.... it’s not gonna be there.
My guess is you weren’t configured for NAV. Are you sure you have the package that includes nav?
Just looking to improve the little things now that my OEM+ build is pretty much complete. So many of us use this and I'd like to get some info out there for the people who don't. I think it's a great program.
On my x7 40i Sport+ and Sport individual, BowersWilkins equalizer and sound profiles, Adaptive high beams
Has anyone figured out how to force Comfort+ Mode to be the default on startup on a 2017 650i?
I coded windows, sunroof to close/open on a long key press. Also digital speed in my display on a 2017 650
The majority of people in modern BMWs pair their phone with CarPlay. On your own BMW, why do you use CarPlay over the iDrive? What don't you like about iDrive? What don't you like about CarPlay? Please include if you have wireless charging and what iDrive system you have (4.2, 6.0, or 7.0). This helps me know what capabilities your iDrive version has. I am more or less curious why CarPlay is so popular in your own words. Thanks!
10X better than iDrive. Waze rules!!! Spotify also!
I don't have a BMW with carplay nor an iPhone, but I can say why I would want that feature set.
Basically you have your phone with you all day, listening to music, planning your route of travel etc. Being able to just put that into my car and "continue" my day would be awesome! Continue where I left off on the lunch break in my playlist or podcast, have my destinations already there instead of getting into maybe another playlist or radio, having to find my destinations etc. It sounds like it's a lot less intrusive on your day and mood.
Wireless, idrive 6. For me, it’s Waze. I’m driving an M2 with no radar detector- gotta have it.
Carplay is a bit laggy for me at times. Tolerable but certainly not smooth. I also get split second audio dropouts a lot streaming through Bluetooth. I like having it but it’s far from perfect... especially the lack of widescreen. I know it can be coded but I have no desire to risk a bricked system.
As an android user I feel like out, but I've always found iDrive 6/7 to be very competent. I don't have many complaints. I do enjoy message integration on my 350z with an after market headunit and wireless AA. Since BMW wants to hide text dictation / other features behind terrible marketing, they are pushing people toward CP/AA.
I normally use i-drive for entertainment, etc. It does switch over to CarPlay when I get a text message, or whatever. I do trust Apple voice integration for navigation more than BMW's (I can say "Hey Siri, navigate to daniel's grill in Lesci" and it will just work).
I noticed that when using CarPlay apps won’t recognize iDrive touch (eg. drawing letters with your finger into controller) as an input method. Is that possible in newer versions? I’m having MY19 530e..
Have you tried beta IOS? Apple usually is not good about product integration regarding products they don’t profit from or fit their vision.
Where in the world did you come up with this conclusion? iDrive is BMW’s system, therefore BMW has to make it available on CarPlay. And there’s a company that won’t do a single thing for the customer if they can’t make a buck off it.
Same for both beta and 13.7
It doesn’t work in my MY18 530e, which is why I often switch to the iDrive Spotify app (it’s much easier to search by writing out what I’m seeking).
I don't think CarPlay support a 'keyboard' input from the car, so this won't work with CarPlay.
I think BMW nixed the touch controller with ID7, its just back to the old rotary knob. At least thats how my MY2020 530e is.
Yup plus 1 for mdecoder or bimmervin
enter the vin and it should tell you the build spec.
Mdecoder.com
best BMW VIN checker is this one - give much more VISUAL information https://bimmer.work/
Another option - and it's much more than just a VIN checker https://visor.vin/ I can't recommend this web site enough. Must have when you're buying/researching a used car.
I recently upgraded from a 2022 BMW to a 2025 one, and there are 3 things I haven't been able to find in the menus. I even checked the user manual! Are these not available anymore?
I am not sure about your #2 and #3, but I do know your #1 is not available in iDrive 8.5.
Thanks, good to know.
I can't help but please post more pictures of your b3. Green + cognac + touring = perfection
It's what my m340 wants to be when it grows up.
You can get all these things in iDrive 8.5, they are just in a different form than before. This might be different on the Alpina since I know it has some visual customizations, but this is how it works on my M340i.
For #1 and #2: go to Climate -> Individual -> Driver. From there, you can adjust the upper body temperature higher/lower. This is the equivalent of #2. You can also adjust the aggressiveness of the automatic wheel/seat heating. This is the equivalent of #1. It’s not as granular as what is in iDrive 7, but the principle is the same. Higher setting = more aggressive heating. I find it works pretty well, and I rarely find myself needing to manually adjust the wheel/seat heating. It simply always seems to be on when I want it.
For #3: to view horsepower, torque, boost, and exact oil temperature, you need to be in Sport mode, then go to Live Vehicle View -> Adaptive. I don’t know of any way to view them in another drive mode. If you want G-forces, you can get that on your instrument cluster by pressing the button on the wheel with the 3 lines, going to Content, and changing to G-Meter.
Hope this helps!
Thanks a lot, I just found all those settings now 🙂
I'm not sure where to request these, so sharing them here.
There are some good ideas here. I think #2 already works, at least with android phones. I’ve only tried it with Apple Maps on an iPhone though.
Yeah, doesn't work on iPhone for Google Maps.
Try Apple Maps. I don’t have iDrive 9 but on my older version, Apple Maps will display in the HUD but Google Maps won’t (using iPhone).
This may be minor, but I'd love an option to keep the Personal Mode cluster look regardless of which driving mode I'm in.
Ya, I was surprised this wasn’t how it already worked. I had a 2022 540i and you could customize the look for each driving style.
The fact that the new OS just locks you into a specific unchangeable look when you're in sport mode really rubs me the wrong way. I just can't figure out what the thinking was. If you want to use the sport drivetrain, your interior must look like this and like this only. Red everything, RED! Only this cluster look! Others VERBOTEN! Also, why can't I just have the car start in sport mode? That's always been an annoyance (it's my car, but I have to go through menus to set it up how I want it every time like it's a rental), but at least in the past you could code it. Now coding isn't an option. /rant
4 is something my wife’s Genesis has and I was very surprised my new X5 didn’t.
My 2021 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy had this.
With the available tech in the X5, this seems like an easy thing to add.
I'm wondering if the barrier to adding this to iDrive has more to do with intellectual property/patent issues than technology/programming.
Could also be banned in EU. I know there’s a few quirks that might carry over to US market.
The OEM screen has experienced the rough Florida heat, so the screen just slowly got worse and worst with the sun burn exposure.
This is possibly the best modification iv ever done to my F30 in the 8 years Iv owned this car. It just makes it more livable and brings it up to today’s 2025 motoring standards.
Installation took roughly about 45 minutes with minimal instructions. My 2013 335i came with 360 camera and some of the good bells and whistles the F30s come optionally.
If you’re a BMW technician, this is as simple as removing the front a/c vent, removing the HVAC controls, pulling out the head unit, routing all of the wiring that was provided and getting everything to seemingly fit and work properly.
It booted right up to the default “Idrive 8” skin, although I actually prefer the idrive 7 and 6 skin settings. Less tacky and matches with the rest of the car nicely.
I got the MID spec directly from bimmerdirect. The staff are great at communication and providing good details and answering any questions. This system cost me $419.
It did take some time to learn the android system, and to get all of the setting right.
To change UI skins, you must ask bimmerdirect team for the instruction manual and passcode to access “factory” settings and coding.
You can use your phone hotspot or home WiFi (if you park close enough or in a garage to receive a signal) and you can actually download ANYTHING in the android store. Although I found some apps don’t work smoothly with the layout.
You can even install a SIM card with internet only data plan so it can have internet without your phone or WiFi (t-mobile sells data only plans for around $15 I think)
You can literally log jnto your Gmail account and use all of your contacts, data transfers, look into your google maps saved spots and do so much more.
It’s basically an android tablet, shaped as a BMW F30 idrive screen, upscales to 10.25 inches.
Yes, you can literally watch YouTube, Netflix, go into TikTok, IG, look up weather maps and forecast, log into your MHD to monitor your DME values and clear any check engine codes and reset adaptations IF you have a MHD OBD WiFi dongle and connect into it through the android wifi connection.
Bluetooth is alittle finicky, but simple to connect to your phone and activate Apple CarPlay.
Surprisingly, you don’t necessarily need to connect the aux jack for sound, as you can still connect to the OEM idrive Bluetooth for phone calls and music playing all while still connecting to Apple CarPlay at the same time. In the future I’ll still use the aux jack to see if it improves the sound quality and see if the system works easier with the audio playback.
If your F30 is a pre-LCI and doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or upgraded idrive system, this is a serious game changer. This keeps up with most BMW infotainment systems with its features, provided your car comes with good options and features, this will enhance it even further.
Ask away for any questions.

I have an F30 and how do you know what screen you can upgrade to?
I have the basic model: no heated seats, no sunroof, no backup camera, etc. it's got that tiny screen with no navigation, and only does calls via bluetooth.
This is an easy task friend. We have thosuands of people with your vehicle who order this device for your car.

Installed my top spec 10.25 on Friday. Reached out, still waiting for a reply but found some videos to watch to install myself. My main unit is the same size as yours, hardest part for me was trying to seat it back without the new wires in the way so it was flush. Yet to install backup camera, might get around to it this week but I love it compared to my stock 8.8 unit
the n55 tht could 219k miles on it is awesome
Does anyone know if you can still retain the OEM 360 camera with this system?
I'm assuming you have an iphone and that's why you're getting the carplay automatically connecting? I'm about to do this for my 435i and give my mom my current idrive screen since the Miami sun killed hers.
BMW stopped sharing idrive updates with the public on their website, and my idrive needs an update. Anyone know where I can find genuine and up to date software besides the dealership? TY
Way back machine has them. The files are still there.
I've got a 2015 330d xdrive. I occasionally use the my bwm app to remotely lock doors and start ventilation. That's about all it does.
I considered doing the map up date for £50ish and noticed that ConnectedDrive and Remote Services were part of the offer but also that I already had them on indefinitely so only needed the map.
I've got no clue what connected services does. Says something about adding apps? What can be added? How does it work? Does it use you're mobiles internet to connect? It says entertainment apps can be used or downloaded from mobile. I assume this isn't things like Spotify or maps etc?
IMO there’s no need for connected apps if you have CarPlay. Amazon music Spotify and maybe a few other map apps but nothing special. I wouldn’t get it.
Thanks. The 2015 hasn't got carplay so end up just using phone in a cradle on the dash for maps and Bluetooth connection for Spotify. Was hoping it might just be tidier.
CarPlay is plenty tbh
