Candle Making Supplies: Where to Buy and What You Need

TL;DR

  • Recommended online suppliers: Candlewic.com, Candlesandsupplies.net, Candle Science, Nature’s Garden, Lone Star Candle [1:1][1:2][4:1].
  • Essential items: Wax, wicks, fragrance oils (not essential oils), jars, and a kit for beginners [1:3][4:1].

Online Suppliers for Bulk Purchases

For those looking to buy candle making materials in bulk online, several suppliers are recommended. Candlewic.com and Candlesandsupplies.net offer a wide range of supplies [1:1]. Additionally, Candle Science, Nature’s Garden, and Lone Star Candle are reputable sources for kits and supplies that cater to beginners as well as experienced candle makers [1:2][4:1].

Essential Supplies for Beginners

When starting out, it's advisable to purchase a candle making kit from a reputable supplier. These kits typically include wax, wicks, fragrance oils, and containers, providing all the basics needed to begin candle making [2:1][4:1]. It's important to note that essential oils are not recommended for candles as they may not perform well in wax [1:3].

Considerations Before Buying in Bulk

Before committing to buying supplies in bulk, it is crucial to experiment with different combinations of wax, wicks, and vessels to find what works best for you [1:2]. Fragrance oils can vary significantly in performance, so testing small quantities first is recommended [1:3].

Educational Resources and Guides

While there isn't a single "ultimate guide" for candle making, resources such as Candle Science's website offer tutorials, educational articles, and wick guides [3:1]. Bramble Berry's YouTube channel is also suggested for learning the basics [3:2].

Local Options for Kolkata

For those located in Kolkata, Gariahat Market is recommended for purchasing candle making materials in bulk [5:1]. Exploring local markets can be beneficial for saving on shipping costs and finding unique supplies.

By starting with a kit and gradually expanding your collection of supplies based on your preferences and needs, you can effectively manage costs and avoid unnecessary bulk purchases.

ORIGINAL POST

Hey everyone!

I’m planning to start learning candle making and was wondering if anyone here could guide me on:

Where to buy candle making materials (wax, wicks, essential oils, jars, etc.) online in bulk?

And if someone has a list of basic items required to start candle making, that would be super helpful! Would really appreciate any leads or suggestions. Thank you in advance! 😊🙏

Choose a supplier Thats close to you to save on shipping costs.

Don’t buy fragrance in bulk based on a description and reviews. A lot of those reviews can be from soap makers and what smells wonderful in soaps and lotions may not work well in wax.

I don’t recommend buying anything in bulk until you are committed to a wax, wick, and vessel combo. I pour 464 with CD wicks. I have 3 different vessels and use 5 different sized wicks.

I second buying a kit from a reputable supplier, not Amazon or similar vendors. Candle Science, Natures Garden, and Lonestar all offer kits that include the basics.

Essential oils aren't recommended for candles. Also, while I understand you wanting to keep costs down, buying in bulk until you know exactly what works for you is pretty pointless. You could buy 50kg of soy then decide it's not working, you want to try a container blend. You could buy fragrance oil that smells delicious in the bottle, but makes horrible smelling candles 🤷 this is why its an expensive hobby and if you're planning on selling which I'm assuming so because you want large quantities, then you're looking at at least a year before you break even or turn a profit. If you want to learn how to make candles, invest in a decent kit from a reputable supplier first.

On and on. Search candle making supplies and your state. Shipping is expensive, might get lucky and have one in driving distance.

I’m just getting started and I see soooo many kits online, it’s giving me option paralysis. I’m pretty certain that I want to commit to the hobby, so any kit that covers a lot of the essentials would be great. Send me your links if you have them!

Thanks :-)

Hi, I’m a beginner as well 🙂—do you sell kits or are you trying to get rid of extra supplies? I’m hoping to start making candles soon, in time for the holidays, but feel a little overwhelmed with all of the info online. If you have some basics that would get me started, that would be wonderful ☺️☮️

Take ^^ up on their offer. Most candle makers end up with a ton of wax, fragrance oil, etc that they don't need for some reason or the other. and it's usually of decent->high quality.

If you're specifically looking for a kit, i've had a great experience (in a tutor setting) with procandlesupply

I'm trying to get rid of supplies, I dove in SUPER deep and then realized it wasn't for me 🥲 I can give you tips but I'm not sure how well they'd generalize, I've always used Candle Science supplies and soy wax.

Ignore maya she shills for woodwick. I used a great kit from candle science but there are other companies that offer kits as well. Beyond kits I’ve priced wax and fragrances from other suppliers and the flaming candle offers 2 lb of wax you can purchase to see if you like that particular type / blend.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily difficult, but there's definitely way more to it than I ever would have thought. I'm two years in and still learning/experimenting. I'm sorry I'm not aware of any one place that provides you with an ultimate guide, but if you visit the candlescience website, they have a lot of tutorials, educational articles, and things like candle wick guides. I've found a lot of helpful resources online like, calculators that help you figure out how much wax and FO you need for a candle, etc. It kind of would be nice to have one place to go to and get all the information you could possible need! Something like that may very well exist and maybe someone will pop on here and share!

What would be the best things to get started with. Obviously I know wax and maybe a jar but are there anything else I need?

Any advice given I am grateful for.

Recommendations for Supplies?

Posted by Jiccups · in r/candlemaking · 14 days ago

I recently got a new job that pays me a lot more, so now I can finally dedicate some time and money to starting an Etsy business and make some Jelly Wax Melts. However, I’m just beginning to break into candle making, so I need some recommendations.

I want to know where you guys supply your stuff from. I’m specifically looking for fragrance oil suppliers, but if you know a good jelly wax supplier, feel free to let me know. Like, is there a specific manufacturer you guys buy from? Or a cheap website that you think has decent quality? Any recommendations are appreciated!

What state do you live in? Wax and containers are often the most expensive part. I suggest checking to see if you have anywhere nearby so you can save on shipping.

For fragrance, CandleScience is having their 50% off 1 oz bottle sale through Monday so you can go try a lot of fragrances right now for not that much. Highly recommend them. They also have candle kits if you’ve never made candles before.

Other suppliers I like are Hive and Honey, Candles and Supplies, and Fillmore.

Candles and Supplies might be doable for a wax and containers pickup for you. They are in Quakertown PA. But I am not at all a fan of their fragrance oils.

If you're still looking for suppliers, we carry fragrance oil. We're doing 20% off until monday.

New to candle making

Hey y’all! I’m new to candle making and have a few questions:

  1. Where does everyone buy their supplies? I’m interested in possibly selling candles so buying quality supplies for wholesale/fair price would be awesome if that’s even a thing? I recently bought some supplies from hobby lobby so I can at least make a run at making them but I’m almost certain there are better places to buy/order from.
  2. What brand supplies do you guys use?
  3. Do you have a tried and true mixing ratio for wax to fragrance?
  4. Do you guys also make room sprays, soaps, wax melts, lip balm, etc? If so could you share some details for those things as well?

I’m a part time Hairstylist of 8+ years with 2 young children so I’m looking for ways to make some extra income while also being able to stay home on the days I’m not in the salon.

Thanks in advance and God bless you all!! ❤️

Photo for attention, it’s not mine.

CandleScience is a great place to start as well as the flaming candle, Aztec, and natures garden. Best to find which is closer to you so shipping is lower especially when buying wax.
Your fragrance load is going to totally depend on wax type (there are many) and what the max load is for that wax and where you want it to be. Typically 8-9% I think is a pretty average fragrance load.
Everything is weighed out on a scale. That’s big tip number 1.
I make wax melts, diffusers, and room sprays along with candles. Most of those businesses I mentioned sell supplies for many scented crafts and have tutorials.

Soy wax is def cheaper so if you’re looking to make it in batches enough to sell I would recommend soy wax so you don’t spend all your money out the gate

I started recently and you have to test a lot before finding what works for you. Ive been working with molds recently because they’re more fun and forgiving (in my opinion). The vessel, the wick, the wax, the pigment, the fragrance etc. once you find what works for you, stick with that lol I made the mistake of buying too much stuff and nothing worked. Took me like 6 months to make a good candle. I had hundred of candles around the house. What a moment to be alive!! Now I have skull candles everywhere haha I bet you can see them on this page lol

candle making supplies

Key Considerations for Candle Making Supplies

  1. Wax Types:

    • Paraffin Wax: Common and affordable, but not eco-friendly.
    • Soy Wax: Natural, biodegradable, and burns cleaner; great for beginners.
    • Beeswax: Natural and has a lovely honey scent; more expensive.
    • Palm Wax: Eco-friendly and has a unique crystalline appearance.
  2. Wicks:

    • Choose the right wick size and material (cotton, wood, or hemp) based on the wax type and candle size. A wick that's too small won't burn properly, while one that's too large can create soot.
  3. Fragrance Oils:

    • Use candle-specific fragrance oils for the best scent throw. Check the maximum fragrance load for your wax type (usually around 6-10%).
  4. Dyes:

    • Candle dyes come in liquid, powder, or block forms. Ensure they are specifically made for candle making to avoid issues with burning.
  5. Containers and Molds:

    • Decide if you want to make container candles (jars, tins) or pillar candles (molds). Ensure they are heat-resistant and suitable for candle making.
  6. Thermometer:

    • A thermometer is essential for monitoring wax temperature during melting and pouring to ensure optimal results.
  7. Pouring Pitcher:

    • A heat-resistant pouring pitcher makes it easier to pour melted wax into molds or containers.
  8. Safety Gear:

    • Always wear gloves and goggles when working with hot wax and fragrance oils to protect yourself.

Recommendation: Start with a candle making kit that includes wax, wicks, fragrance oils, and dye. This is a great way to get all the essential supplies in one package, especially if you're a beginner. Brands like CandleScience or The Wooden Wick Co. offer comprehensive kits that simplify the process and provide quality materials.
