Personalized and Thematic Gifts
Consider tailoring stocking stuffers to the recipient's interests or hobbies. For instance, if someone is into coloring, you could include gel pens, acrylic paint pens, or a clip-on reading lamp [3:1]
[3:2]. For sewing enthusiasts, items like rotary cutter blades, fabric chalk, or a nice thimble can be thoughtful additions
[5:1]
[5:3].
Fun and Quirky Items
Stockings are a great place for quirky and fun gifts that bring a smile. Some suggestions include gag gifts like a Miniature Zen Garden or a Screaming Goat toy [1:3], as well as unique items like a depressed duck lamp or Spiritual AF cards
[1:7]. These types of gifts add an element of surprise and humor.
Practical and Useful Stuffers
Including practical items in stockings can be both useful and appreciated. Common suggestions include chapstick, hand cream, small toiletries, and travel-sized items [2:3]
[4:4]. Additionally, things like flashlights, batteries, or even sewing notions like needles and thread can be very handy
[4:1]
[5:8].
Food and Treats
While traditional candy and chocolates are always popular, consider adding other treats like Slim Jims, beef jerky, or tangerines, which have cultural significance in some traditions [4:1]
[4:2]. Including a mix of sweet and savory options can cater to different taste preferences.
Budget-Friendly Options
Many stocking stuffers can be budget-friendly while still being thoughtful. Look for small items under $20, such as nail polish, lip balm, or small art supplies [4:3]
[3:3]. These affordable gifts can still make a big impact and show you care without breaking the bank.
Something fun & outside the box?
One year we had a rule that we could only spend $25 and the rest of the gifts needed to be something found around the home. It was hilarious and one of the best Holidays we had! We spent our $ that year on fresh crab and other food and had a LOT of laughs opening our gifts. I got a brand new spatula; the angel and the baby Jesus from the Nativity scene we had, a walnut, and some candy. I never had so much fun opening my stocking.
That is a great idea and stress free!! Thank you for sharing this 😊
Who is the target audience? What’s the budget? I’m a sucker for those stupid little boxed gimmicky gifts like Miniature Zen Garden, Screaming GOAT, wacky inflatable waving arm man, etc. I just picked one up called “Office Fires” with a mini fire extinguisher and I guess a little joke book about - got it for the health & safety guy at work. It was $6 at Marshall’s. The Fred brand has lots of funny little gag gifts. Candy like Pop Rocks, big league chew . . . Idk I’m just saying things.
You would love the gifts my friend and I have exchanged recently: The depressed duck lamp, the toilet bowl light, Spiritual AF cards.
Go to Oboo.love. They have gifts for perimenopausal/menopausal women, book lovers, travelers…. ❤️ Definitely not your typical stocking stuffers. :-)
Not outside the box but just as a suggestion personally I love a stocking full of small individual things that are WRAPPED. Makes the stocking so much more fun than just putting things in there and pulling them out. Unwrapping all the things makes it extra nice.
I’m doing this for the first time right now and figured it would make stockings more fun. Happy to see your comment.
Lotto tickets.
I just assumed it was normal to get random things you needed in your stocking (chapstick, toiletries, etc.) but now that I’m the one doing the stocking stuffing I’m not so sure that is normal. Tell me what should actually go in a stocking.
It can be anything. A few of necessities, a few fun things, and/or one thing special. My in laws always put in addition to fun stuff, a regular pencil, back scratcher, tangerine, a nickel, and some unshelled nuts.
Generally I put candy, chapstick, hand cream, and any other small items that would be tedious to wrap or would be wasteful to purchase a gift bag for.
For example: pocket sketchbooks, a mini/pocket art pencil set, gift cards, and other small items.
Anything you want . Why it's called a stuffer
Candy, snacks, and tiny bottles of liquor. I like the chapstick idea too.
My wife has become obsessed with coloring (markers). It's like all she does with every spare second of her life now. I want to fill her xmas stocking this year with things that support this new hobby of hers, while also being aware that she is a hobby collector and will probably move on from this in a few months, so no really expensive, fancy stuff. lol
A new pen set or coloring book are obvious ideas. But I'm clueless. What else is there that makes this hobby more fun and would fit in a stocking?
Thanks for any ideas you can throw at me.
You could get a pick and mix of materials she can use for extra flourishes. E.g, for highlights you could get her a white gelly roll pen/white prismacolor pencil. Sharpie have gold and silver markers, Copic have glitter pens. Nothing that'd break the bank so would make a fun little DIY selection box.
Love it!
Glitter and metallic gel pens.
Acrylic paint pens.
White gel pens.
Cute sticky tabs to mark her pages.
Practical color combinations-this is a book recommendation of color combinations and different ways to use them. (Very useful around $18 Amazon)
You could get a small set of colored pencils so she can use them for added shading
Can you link the book? :)
I would go to staples (Canadian store) and get some of the Sharpies. They can be cheap and sometimes have marker cases that fit them.
Staedler has two; 4 pack sets of bright neon fineliner markers and the other one is pastel. I love them! 14.99$ or 16.99$ on Amazon Canada. I just typed in Staedler Fineliner Neon, or Staedler Fineliner Pastel. Should be there. At least in Canada lol.
I really like my clip on reading lamp so I can see well in tight spaces or poorly lit rooms.
I also enjoy gel pens, (especially white) and these tiny bottles of glitter glue that can add texture and extra pizzaz to her marker work.
Or perhaps from the craft or dollar store, get a small piece of unpainted wood (they have some very small ones) a couple small acrylic paints or paint pens, and a pack of stickers. She can create something unique to hang in her art space.
I was planning on stuffing in some slim Jim’s 🤣 but in my family we always did oranges as well (something about good luck) and little useful items like flashlights, batteries, deodorant, razors
My wife is German, and oranges are a thing in Germany as well. I think it goes back to the St. Nicholas tradition with shoes at the door.
For kids?? What age?
For girls, nail polish, nail files, chapstick.
Boys- cheap racecars, stickers, yoyo's, those little finger skateboards, bubbles etc.
My children are adults (21 and 24) and my wife.
Why the unnecessary gendering?
Lmfaoooooooooooo. Are you effing kidding me. I honestly can't tell if you're trolling or not. Get outta here with your unnecessary pushing agendas on literal children.
I always do toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss, lip balm, travel size stuff
Beef jerky
Hey Everyone, I'm looking for stocking stuffer ideas for my wife who mostly sews garments or bags. I got her a new serger for Christmas and some new shears she had mentioned wanting if those spark any ideas for addons that would be nice to have.
Any ideas for small stuff I could fill her stocking with?
just needles?
more scissors?
fabric chalk? She uses a projector for patterns so not sure if the fabric chalk is still useful?
a particular foot for her serger that everyone seems to need? the serger is a Juki MO600N
I'm clueless when it comes to sewing so any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
She is left handed so if anything you can suggest would make life easier for her on that front I'd be interested in those ideas as well!
Bobbins, pretty buttons, and GOOD thread would be at the top of my list.
Thread is always fun! In even odd colors I find a use for it.
A really nice thimble... I love a good thimble.
Leather thimbles with ..... What are they called. Inscriptions? Or initials? Are really nice.
Somebody gave me this old sewing box with 3 bags of old buttons and in the stuff in it besides that there was an enamel cloisonné thimble. Pretty thimbles are awesome! I've never had one, only plastic and basic metal ones. I just love that thing to bits.
The old box is way cool too. They don't make them like that anymore. It's HUGE like 14" square and it has this wonderful sewing themed fabric on top. It had tins in it too. I think I was happily organizing all the buttons for like 3 hours, not kidding.
It was like being a little kid and rummaging through my Mom's old box and her tins of buttons...
:)
I love this story. Sorting through Mom's old button box is a favorite memory of mine also.
I ADORE my leather thimbles! I have 2 for when I'm handsewing tougher fabrics but they fit perfectly over the top half of my pointer finger, and when I have my nails long they still cover the top 3rd and it's perfect! 10/10 best investment I made into my crafting
Really good pins (long and sharp) and a magnetic pin holder. Clips if she doesn't like pins
Sharp little scissors
A super duper task light from Ott Lite
Look through Wawak.com for the best prices and availability if you are in the US
My MIL exclusively uses Clover pins and she's converted me to, too! They're so much nicer to my fabric.
Needles are always in need, especially with a serger. Be sure to get some made for knits, as sergers are amazing with knit fabrics, and sergers use 2 needles instead of one.
Seam rippers and stilettos are also a good idea, as are sewing clips (aka wonder clips.) I get mine from wawak or amazon. Also, she'll need special thread for her serger, and will need/want 4 cones of each color. I'd recommend ivory, rose, black, white, and gray to start. That should see her through a LOT of her first serger projects.
Lastly, a silver pen for marking vinyl would be great, especially for a bag maker. I've found chalk markers aren't amazing for dark vinyls. You can also pick up a couple of Frixon heat erase pens. They're my favorite for marking seam allowances, etc. She can also use them to mark off her pattern piece lists and then simply iron over them to disappear the marks. :)
No matter how many spools I have of Gutermann thread, I never have the right shade. ;-p
Oh for sure! I have rainbow and pastel rainbow and absolutely adore both, however, they were quite pricey!
One of the things my husband puts in my stocking every year is new blades for my rotary cutter. I also use a projector and still use things like chalk to mark notches and things. I also agree with the recommendations for needles and thread.
Just got into quilting and decided to make gifts for my family this year. Decided to make everyone stockings and I’m pretty happy with how they turned out!
Congratulations, they turned out beautiful 👏🏽😊! Did you use a pattern or freehand?😊
Free handed the designs but use a Suzy quilts pattern for the size and shape of the stocking!
Thanks! Again, nice work 😁
I love your stockings!
I just discovered making stockings. In a fit of whimsy, frustrated at a small quilt I was working on, I turned it into a Christmas stocking. Now I want to make more.
Thank you! They are definitely a very satisfying project. Yours turned out so cute!
Thank you!
Those are so festive and well done! Love your design choices
Thank you!
Perfect. You have a designers eye.
Thank you so much!
They are simply lovely!
Thank you!
What is stuff that you would actually like to use, Or would be happy to have?
For kids tiny lego sets (any tiny toys really), I was thinking lightsabers for my nephews, can't go wrong with candy,
My ex-girlfriend got me a safety razor along with a pack of 100 blades and it changed the way that I shaved for forever. No more of those expensive disposable shavers from Gillette.
Went from spending over $100 a year on disposable razor heads to spending maybe 15 bucks every 1.5 years to buy a pack of safety razors and some shaving cream.
A 10 incher.
good idea ! i also would recommend a voucher for local pizza shop
Half Q of Stardog
spitballing here and went through my amazon purchase history.
Bored at work.
Depends on your stocking size I guess... It's mostly candy stuff, but if you wanna get an item too, here are some somewhat smaller size fillers...? but some things are definitely pricier than others.
Posting this as a 30y.o dude.
Trying to find Christmas gifts for friends/family but everything feels so… generic. I’d love to hear what’s worked for you—especially stuff that made people go “wow, that’s actually thoughtful.” Could be small, DIY, funny, whatever.
I like to go to the farmers market and pick out fun treats and things like tea and honey. Really simple but it’s nice to shop local and will for sure be something that gets used or easily regifted.
Homemade vanilla extract. You have just enough time to make magic happen.
That’s an option for next year lol I just started 2 jars and they won’t be good for another 6-8 months minimum. It is a wow moment with minimum effort though.
Any recommendation on where to buy the beans?
They are selling beans at Costco now!
Food grade B beans from EBay
One year, I discovered Clinique’s Black Honey, and I swear it’s flattering on every skin tone. All of them. And if ever I’m looking towards that for a gift, but I don’t have the money for Clinique, Honest Beauty makes an excellent dupe, and the color of their tinted balm is called Plum Drop.
I also happen to have a sentimental group of friends, so some fruit flavored teas makes one really happy, and another love someone just remembering something she mentioned liking, like the cola flavored gummy candies.
And almost every girl I know is an oddity girl yes, so a framed pinned butterfly specimen can be a really thoughtful and beautiful gift.
My bestie's daughter is in the beauty business and apparently Clinique's Black Honey is the most imitated makeup color ever, that color works on everyone! I'd be happy to receive it as a gift.
I've been on the hunt for a black honey dupe! Thank you!
For people who love practical gifts, a Seki Edge nail clipper is wonderful! A small thing but the best in its class. I've given many pairs and had the recipients text me after using, saying how nice it is.
Honestly, the small quirky gifts are the ones people remember — stuff like car cleaning gel for vents, a tiny desk vacuum, or even a space-suit can cooler. They’re funny, actually useful, and don’t feel like filler. I shared more ideas like that in a post I made the other day if you wanna check it out here..
Thank You So Much!
Hey Everyone! I’m going on a craft weekend with my sisters coming up. We will be gone for a full 4 days with no responsibilities other than our crafts! I have a small quilt to bring with that will take maybe a couple of hours, and I have another quilt to bind. I’m looking for ideas for small projects to bring to kill time and try something new while I have this bonus free time. I’ve never made anything with a zipper, but would be curious to try a tote or pouch if anyone has some good beginner pattern recommendations. I was also thinking about trying to make Christmas stockings for my family and would love any guidance on that! Any other suggestions of something fun?
Definitely look at Christmas stockings! They are a blast to make, and easy to personalize! If you have pets you can make paw print ones as well. Etsy has a lot of good patterns
Do you have a favorite easy pattern? Or just draw out a template and go for it?
I love doing the Bucilla felt stockings. My mom made them for my whole family when I was a child and now I ’ve carried on the tradition for my family. They are a little tedious and time intensive, but they are hand sewn and come with everything you need so it’s a fun hobby/project to do while watching a show or listening to an audiobook.

This is an excellent combo pack for a lot of different patterns!
Check out Melanie Ham's tutorial for boxed zipper totes. I make them frequently from leftover fabric and they are so popular as gifts. And if you want to try a quilted tote bag (also in high demand from friends and family) I wrote up this pattern that you can download. I have modified the pattern a bit. The straps need more reinforcement, so I suggest using scrap fabric to make them a little longer and then fold the ends down about an inch at the attachment point and when the bag is complete, go back and sew an "x" on the doubled over part.
Check out ByAnnie patterns. She has a few free ones on her website that just take a few fat quarters of fabric plus a few other supplies. They're great for quilters wanting to get into bag making!
I’m not going to say what you should bring because I’m sure you’re going to pick some great stuff.
I will say, I am so jealous!! For many years (about 7-10)two of my sisters and I (three don’t sew) would take over a conference room at our brother’s business for Presidents’ Day weekend. Three solid days of hanging out, quilting and eating. Those are memories that I cherish 💕 now and will forever. I hope you have a blast and get to make it a tradition for as long as possible.
Here is the easiest, foolproof zipper pouch there is. I often use it to make donation zipper bags or little gifts out of old FMQ practice sandwiches. But you can make them from most anything, any size with this method.
Hello all,
I hope you’re doing well this morning :)
I work as a general manager for a small business and as a personal thank you to our staff and managers for their help and support this past year, I wanted to curate small gift bags/baskets for everyone to say thanks.
I’m trying to do my best to shop local and through small businesses as I curate these gifts. I’m hoping to spend around $22 per gift bag/basket and was looking for “stocking stuffer” ideas. So far, I’ve purchased the following through small businesses (just so that you get an idea of what’s going in the boxes):
I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas they wouldn’t mind sharing that wouldn’t topple me over that total $22 mark. I really like the bath and body foaming hand soaps, and was trying to find anyone that sold something similar locally (but I realize I may not be able to get it within the same price range due to production differences). I will not shy away from food items, coffee/tea items, hand sanitizer, candles, etc.
Any help is appreciated :) please just point me in a direction. Online delivery and curbside pick up ideal!
Edit: I’m at work now and won’t be able to take a thorough look at everyone’s responses until later. I want to thank you all for your helpful suggestions, and I hope others are able to use these recommendations for their own gift giving as well!
>I really like the bath and body foaming hand soaps
Please don't buy things you like, buy things you think others would like. Soaps are usually scented and a lot of people are picky about the scents. Festive mugs sounds like a good idea, festive socks?, trail mixes, chocolate, cookies
Thank you SO much for answering and reminding me of this!!!
I'm going to end up going with popcorn, as another user suggested
Where did you get the hot chocolate bomb!?
I got the hot chocolate bomb through an acquaintance, they don't have an established business yet but if you're interested I can pass you her Instagram, she has visuals and info on the products there. My original option was to go with http://www.stubbechocolates.com/. It appears their site is down, but you may be able to get more info and visuals through their social media.
Check out https://thegoodsweets.com!
You can order online from Toronto-based Light & Salt Soap Company: https://www.etsy.com/shop/lightandsaltsoapco/. A small bar is usually around $7-$8. They also offer contactless delivery if you're in Etobicoke, Mississauga, or Brampton.
Thank you! That’s an excellent idea!
Another Redditor pointed out that scented items may not be a good idea for colleagues because they're so personal -- and they're right! I'm glad someone reminded me. However, these soaps look great. My fiance and I really enjoy the bar soaps from Stirling Soap company (purchased through Top of the Chain), so I'll actually use your suggestion to get a few soaps for us to try out since I'm better able to gauge our personal tastes. I'm eyeing the soap sampler bundle. Have you purchased from them before?
This is PERFECT. I love that it lets you select categories and gives you options from there. Thank you :)
Here are the ones I've found and used this year:
https://thebuttonmachine.com/ (found through Not Amazon, which is why I'm piggybacking on these comments)
https://mainandlocal.com/collections/all-products (currently offering free shipping and 20% off, but their supply is dwindling, and Retro Festive has some of the stuff I wanted that is sold out here, which I only saw after placing my order, industrious)
Fun, silly, locally themed gifts at all three. Your little loot bags sound fun!
Toronto popcorn company? They have delicious and unique popcorn flavours.
Going for this one, thank you for the suggestion! I'm in the process of placing an order for 8 of the classic caramel popcorn and 7 of the bacon cheddar :)
