Cuphead Boss Fight Strategies

General Tips for Boss Fights

Cuphead is known for its challenging boss fights, and having the right strategy can make a significant difference. One key strategy is to pay attention to your weapon loadout and choose upgrades wisely [5:1]. For example, using the Roundabout weapon and Smokebomb (invincible dash) can be particularly effective in early levels [5:3]. Additionally, the Coffee charm can be beneficial in plane levels as it allows you to spam ex attacks more frequently [1:2].

Movement and Dodging Techniques

Learning to make small, precise movements is crucial for dodging bullets and attacks [1:3]. Instead of sweeping movements, try tapping the joystick to make tiny adjustments, which helps avoid flying into other bullets. Relaxing your vision and focusing on dodging rather than aiming can improve your ability to evade attacks. Once you're proficient at dodging, hitting the boss becomes easier.

Specific Boss Strategies

For certain bosses, specific strategies can be employed. In the first phase of some boss fights, prioritize targets by attacking top, bottom, then middle [1:5]. Using the shrink ability is also recommended for maneuverability [1:4]. When facing Mortimer Freeze, use Charge Shot in the first phase and Crackshot in the second and third phases to maximize damage while maintaining health [4:1].

Weapon Choices and Loadouts

Choosing the right weapons for each boss is essential. The Chaser and Spread weapons are recommended for certain fights, such as against Von Bon Bon [5:5][5:7]. The Chaser is useful for consistent damage without needing precise aim, while Spread can deal significant damage up close. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for each encounter.

Mindset and Practice

Having a positive mindset and practicing consistently can greatly enhance your performance. Some players recommend using an Xbox controller for better control and comfort [5:8]. Focus on one boss at a time, learn their patterns, and gradually improve your skills through repetition and perseverance [5:2].

I didn't watch it all, sorry... but I would go with Coffee for the charm instead of the extra heart. My very first thought, is commit a little more. At start, lure the beam up but line up and sit still. With coffee you can even ex attack before you have to move. Leave the middle for last so you can spam extra special/ex by parrying the middle object. I usually bomb the heart, others would disagree but in the second phase you really just have to use the small plane frequently to keep avoiding the bombs and lining yourself up. If you have coffee, you'll have a full super again by phase 3. Phase 3... watch the spiral pattern, parry when you can, use small plane as necessary and careful not to fade back to the left edge too much or the walls will get you. Ult any chance you get! Good luck!

spaceape8 · 5 years ago

You did well up until bullet swarm.

Then I noticed you did really sweeping movements. Learn to make tiny movements. Dodging bullets can be the tap of the joystick. That way you get out of the way but don't go flying into another bullet. Relax your vision and move in small steps. Takes a while to get used to, but eventually you will be able to dodge most the bullets.

Then only when you get good at dodging, start worrying about hitting the boss. I actually never even try to hit the boss. I just dodge and shoot without aiming.

Cuphead tips coming up!

Posted by breakthefifthwall · in r/Cuphead · 3 years ago

As most of you probably know by now, the Cuphead DLC is coming out at the end of the month. So to celebrate, I decided I’m going to be posting tips for each boss in the main game.

These tips will be based on my experiences on achieving the S rank for all bosses, including advice on what weapon setup to take and how to evade all the different attacks. I will be posting tips for one boss a day, every day, until the release of the DLC.

I’ll be listing the bosses in order, starting with The Root Pack. I’ll be posting every day, so stay tuned if there’s a boss you’re still working on and you need tips!

How to fight the Secret Boss Again

Posted by Katoky778 · in r/Cuphead · 3 years ago

So I don’t think this is well known yet so yeah. The fight can be triggered again by standing in front of the middle tombstone and holding L+R (or LT+RT) for a bit, reactivating the tombstone. Currently it does not seems to work with keyboard control.

This is great because the achievements in this game are buggy. I beat the boss and didn’t get the achievement. I thought I’d have to play the whole game again.

I also killed a boss using Ms Chalice super and that didn’t give me the achievement. Plus it’s not tracking boss kills with her.

It took killing several bosses for me with the divine relic for paladin to pop, and many others seem buggy at the moment.

Lol I can't even beat that dumb dragon and a few islands 3 bosses so i have never fought king dice or the devil. I can't beat the game because I stink but at least I got the divine relic

Can confirm this works, I thought it was weird that there was a boss you couldn't rematch.

I assume the keyboard controls for doing this were either broken or they forgot to implement them, hopefully that will get patched in later.

Easiest boss in the DLC, fight me

76 upvotes on reddit
ninjapuppy_ · 3 years ago

Honestly, I thought everything after Mortimer Freeze was way easier than everything else. I don't think any of the bosses after Mortimer took me more than 5 tries. Getting S ranks has been a huge pain, though, especially with the last phase of moonshine mob. I've only got Mortimer left, then I'll have S ranks on every boss in the game

4 upvotes on reddit
dgreenmissile · 3 years ago

I relate with that. I am the kind of player that restarts when they get hit early. My strategy is...

Charge Shot 1st phase. Crackshot 2nd and 3rd phase.

I make enough meter to parry my own crack shots to get health with the heart ring and try to get hit the least on the 2nd phase. After that it's try not to mess up on the last stage which is so easy to do. What I find the most annoying parts about this battle is that when he throws his little icicles on the 1st phase, they go towards a side and give you like a fraction of a second to react and sometimes you get hit if you flick or press the button to the wrong side. It's almost a guaranteed lost health. The flying popsicles on the second stage are straight up unfair always appearing at the most inconvenient places pretty much covering your safety jumps and spots. The last portion is hard if you haven't parried 3 times. The buckets sometimes fly at the weirdest angles and the platforming makes it extremely difficult to parry them. Also the eye gets a bit tricky sometimes. I am talking Expert Difficulty trying to get the S.

If the goal is just to defeat them no matter what grade, then none feel difficult anymore... on any difficulty

Been playing for awhile.

Early, my advice is to get Smokebomb (invincible dash) and the Roundabout weapon first.

Spend your first 4 coins on Roundabout. Do the first Run-n-Gun and then buy Smokebomb.

Those 2 items should be able to carry you through Isle 1 and quite a few other bosses.

Coffee is a good item for plane levels to be able to spam ex attack more frequently.

Have fun!

By now, I’ve beat him 4 times already. He’s actually pretty fun. For some reason though, I struggle with rolling the dice. Like, I try to roll a 2, and end up with 3. Like I’d literally make it to the end, I’ll say “don’t roll a 2, don’t roll a 2! Roll a 3-“ ends up rolling a 2 and now I have to start over.

SKS_Finity · 3 months ago

The loadout I use is charge shot and the triple lighting shot from the DLC shop along with super one and smoke bomb. King dice is a marathon not a race so don’t be scared to burn your cards, you will make them back. A lil tip with parrying the dice is that if you spam parry right as he claps the number will always be a one so just focus on fighting as few bosses as possible while also stock piling the health spots

If you’re really struggling, try this advice.

  • use P.sugar as it’s easier to hit the dice on the number you want and dodge the cards at the end which is objectively the worst part.

  • easiest route imo is bosses 1, 4, 8. Retry if a bonus heart doesn’t land on two of them.

  • double parry each card to give you more time to jump to the next one. I don’t use smoke bomb for him because you need to see yourself the whole time to time it properly and the auto parry makes it way easier.

Good luck!

I think I found a way for me to get good at cuphead.

Posted by WHAT_THE_FUCK_PEOPLE · in r/Cuphead · 30 days ago

After defeating the angel/demon boss in the dlc and getting the cursed charm I found that just trying to beat bosses with it made me (somewhat) good at the game because. Only having one heart made me good at dodging, gaining hearts by parrying made me good at parrying, and changing weapons every time I stoped shooting helped me learn what weapons are good for what situations, this may not work for everyone but it does work for me 😊

After struggling for days on Grim Matchstick, I finally achieved a perfect victory!

Cuphead has been on my backlog for many years now. I love difficult games and have been eagerly awaiting a playthrough! This was the first boss that absolutely drove me up the wall with its randomness. It took me a while to even consistently get past phase 2, but once I did…it still felt like the randomness of it all would still overwhelm me.

I think this will be the rare game that I put in the time to perfect (S/P rank everything!)

Some things I learned:

  • Don’t attack too much early seconds of the fight. Let him keep eye beaming you for the parries. Once you do enough damage, he switches to sine-wave fireballs.

  • Super him early so that you can super him again in phase 3, when it really matters!

  • Stay up high the rest of the fight. The little flames jump from below, and the flamethrower attack is never aimed at the top clouds.

  • Stop auto-attacking when you’re dodging orbs in phase 3. Makes it easier to avoid them (and not make it worse by detonating them).

My tierlist for the cuphead bosses based on how much fun they are to S-rank.

Posted by F2p_wins274 · in r/Cuphead · 1 month ago

This is coming from the perspective of someone who beat the game S-rank like a shit ton of times, 3 of which being special runs (divine relic only, miss chalice only, and peashooter only).

The needs more parries category is that the bosses aren't very fun to S-rank because you might kill them before you can parry 3 times. You need to delay the phases in order to get the opportunity to even parry 3 times which is just not very fun and kinda infuriating.

I am not the biggest fan of most plane bosses to S rank. They're mostly "spam the entire screen with projectiles".
I would switch Grim and Beppi, the dogs alone are enough for three parries. Saltbakers is pretty fun, but I dislike his third phase a lot. It might be a Switch thing, but I cannot move while dropping down (even when I jump spam it doesn't react) and will almost always lose one health.

F2p_wins274 · OP · 1 month ago

Omfg i forgot about Grimm. Yeah he def needs to go in needs more parries.

Though I do understand what you mean, I really like plane bosses, especially Esther and Doctor Khal.

I really like chef saltbaker but maybe it's my Stockholm syndrome talking from the 10+ hours of attempts on him in the peashooter only run lmao.

MysteriousO1211 · 1 month ago

I agree, except for beppi and mortimer freeze. I think beppi has enough parries, the nose of the kart, the horseshoes and the balloon dogs. Mortimer freeze is not as bad for me as everyone says. Sure, the first phase can go by without a single parry, but the pink popsicles and pink buckets in the second and final phase respectively will almost always appear for me. I agree for the rest though

3 upvotes on reddit
F2p_wins274 · OP · 1 month ago

Hmm, I do kinda agree with Beppi now that I think about it, but only with Cuphead. Sometimes I would try to delay killing him just so that he does the hooves attack with the parry in the third phase, or comes out with the pink duck in the first phase, but you can reasonably get all 3 parries with Cuphead just from the nose of the cart. However, with Ms Chalice, I most of the time just ended up getting hit or entirely missing while trying to parry the nose, so I had to rely on the rest and delay his death to get him (while also being generally harder to parry because of Ms Chalice's mechanics).

For Mortimer however I don't agree with you. He just dies way too fast. In the first phase sometimes he won't choose a pink tarot card. In the second phase, I end up with only pink popsicle most of the time if I actually try to kill him, and in the third phase sometimes he dies before he even does the cup throwing attack. Like I don't know if he needs more parries or if he needs more hp lmfao.

1 upvotes on reddit

It's mostly about Chalice. Trying to parry it just ends up with me getting hit most of the time because of its hit box.

Though yeah I should have made a different list for both lol.

Just finished all the content in Cuphead! Here's my tier list of how fun each boss was to S-tier (with small positive rant)

Posted by Ok_Description_9328 · in r/Cuphead · 4 months ago
post image

This game completely took over my life for 3 days straight. What a masterpiece!

Every single boss is not only super fun to fight gameplay-wise, but both the music and the artwork is perfection.

(small positive rant start!) Prioritizing the 'coolness' factor of a boss is a trap I've seen many games fall for, which is not a bad thing in of itself, but it often comes to the detriment of gameplay. And for me personally, good gameplay is a make or break, regardless of how good the artwork and music is. When I started the game for the first time 4 days ago, I was honestly pretty certain this would be the case. Great music and art, but severely lacking in the gameplay section. (which is why I hesitated to play Cuphead for so long)

But I can proudly say that, in my opinion, this game DOES NOT fall into that trap! Every attack looks stylish, but are very well telegraphed, which makes them a joy to learn. You know what to expect at every turn and can plan around it (with very few exceptions). What I love the most though, is how important and rewarding good positioning is. This is obviously personal bias, but I LOVE positioning based dodges and planning ahead (which is also why I love souls combat so much!).

To end off, the parry took some time to get used to, but when I mastered it, it felt great. And in the beginning, I honestly wasn't a huge fan of the plane bosses or the run-and-gun levels, but they really grew on me.

Small rant over, I love this game!

cuphead boss fight strategies

Here are some effective strategies for Cuphead boss fights:

  1. Learn Attack Patterns:

    • Each boss has specific attack patterns. Spend time observing their moves to anticipate and dodge effectively.
  2. Use the Right Weapons:

    • Choose weapons that suit the boss's weaknesses. For example, the Spread shot is great for close-range, while the Chaser is effective for tracking.
  3. Super Arts:

    • Utilize Super Arts wisely. Save them for critical moments, especially when the boss is vulnerable or during a difficult phase.
  4. Parry Opportunities:

    • Look for pink objects to parry. This not only gives you extra Super Meter but can also help you dodge attacks.
  5. Co-op Play:

    • If possible, play in co-op mode. Having a partner can make dodging and dealing damage easier, and you can revive each other if one goes down.
  6. Stay Mobile:

    • Keep moving to avoid attacks. Use dashes and jumps to navigate around the boss and their projectiles.
  7. Practice Makes Perfect:

    • Don’t get discouraged by repeated failures. Each attempt helps you learn the boss’s patterns and improve your timing.
  8. Use Invincibility Wisely:

    • When you dash, you become invincible for a short time. Use this to pass through attacks or reposition yourself.

Recommendation: For particularly tough bosses, consider using the Smoke Bomb charm for better mobility and invincibility during dashes. This can help you navigate tricky attack patterns more effectively.
