Cuphead Expert Mode Tips

Preparation and Strategy

Expert mode in Cuphead is significantly more challenging than regular mode, requiring players to adapt their strategies for each boss. It's recommended to first achieve A ranks on all bosses in regular mode to get accustomed to their patterns [1:4]. Players should be prepared to change tactics for the increased difficulty, as expert mode demands precise timing and quick reflexes [4:1].

Boss-Specific Tips

Each boss requires a unique approach. For Hilda Berg, staying on the left side of the screen can help avoid her egg attack [1:2]. Grim Matchstick was noted as particularly difficult, but using Lobber and Peashooter/Roundabout can be effective [1:5]. Cala Maria's last phase can be tackled by positioning close to her to avoid petrification and skull bubbles, allowing for high DPS with whetstone [5:1][5:4].

General Advice

Avoiding damage is crucial; try not to get hit as much as possible [1:3]. The Twin Heart charm can be useful for endurance tests like Dr. Kahl's Robot, though it reduces damage output [1:2]. Remember that you don't need S ranks on every boss for the trophy, just beat them on expert [2:3].

Unlocking Expert Mode

To access expert mode, players must first beat the Devil in regular mode [3:1]. Once unlocked, you can replay bosses on expert from your finished world without restarting the game [2:2].

Community Insights

Some players find Chef Saltbaker to be the hardest boss due to his complex phases and platforming challenges [5:5], while others disagree and find him overrated [5:8]. Experimenting with different techniques and sharing experiences can provide new strategies and insights into overcoming these formidable foes.

ORIGINAL POST

Ok, so I’m trying to platinum cuphead. If you’re not a PlayStation player, basically platinum just means collect every trophy/achievement in the game. I have every trophy except one and that is ‘Beat the Devil at his own Game’ which requires me to beat all the bosses on the Expert difficultly, which I suck ass at. So if anyone has beat the game on expert, could you please me? Got any tips or advice? Thanks!

Narayami · 4 years ago

Hey! The hardest boss I fought to get the platinum was Hilda Berg. So you should do that in last, unless you do good vs that boss. A trick to that boss is to keep your char at the left side of the screen, so when the egg explodes you just move up or down and easily avoid it.

The twin heart can be good sometimes, or it can be bad since you will do a lot less damage. IMO its better not using it, but you could give it a try. it could be usefull in dr kahl's robot last stage at least, since its gonna be basically an endurance test. When you have some issue at some boss just google it, theres pretty nice tips and videos of people doing it.

Besides that theres nothing much to say, you just have to keep trying and get better. If you are having trouble with something in particular let me know.

good luck

Select expert difficulty and fight the boss until it says knockout. Then repeat for every other boss

There's not a single tip that helps for every boss. Tbh you just need to git gud.

Also, try not to get hit, that helped me a lot

I'm going through this right now. Once you have A ranked all bosses on regular, it isn't bad. Most bosses take a little bit but less than an hour or so. I just finished inkwell 3

UPDATE: Guys I only have two bosses left, probably the hardest. Grim and Wally.

I was scared of grim, hands down the hardest for me to a rank. But all that practice paid off, and I beat him on expert first try. Lobber and peashooter/roundabout

Also, my update. You THINK you only have 2 bosses left. But, there are 2 more. You know, those "other" two. "Those" two. King Dice is annoying, but getting good heart RNG placement and it just takes a solid run.

I'm stuck on the Devil though...I have been unsuccessful in being able to make it to his final form with super or HP to spare...will try again today after work and hopefully wrap it up.

from your finished world. Expert difficulty dont even exist in other saves. You'll get past %100 completion every boss you defeat in expert mode and eventually you'll be at %200 completion where you complete the game in expert.

Just beat the bosses by selecting expert before each match. You can make them in the order you want

Alright thank you!

Also a tip, you do NOT need to get S ranks on all of them. Just simply beat them all on expert.

You do need to get one S rank to get that specific trophy though.

How hard is expert mode?

Posted by happyfugu · in r/Cuphead · 4 years ago

I guess I should just try and probably will, but I’m curious what my ~14 hour regular mode completion time means after just beating the devil this morning. (He was tough! Took me a couple hours.)

Am I kind of average skill based on that? Is expert mode achievable you think with another 10-20 hours at it? I realize it isn’t a science but trying to get a sense of if it’s achievable for normal people with reasonable time like me, or more for speed runners and very good reflex players.

Imo expert isn’t that much harder overall. It depends on the boss though.

Expert mode is very difficult. I had to change my strategy on every boss to compensate for the increased difficulty. That time frame is doable, but be prepared to be humbled.

Ok! Yeah I’ll just have to try, I guess I was wondering if I should resist to feel more satisfied with my regular clear but too tempting to try lol.

Cuphead Fun Fact #1: For the last phase of Cala Maria, you can completely avoid the petrification attack by getting right up in her face at about the distance shown in the photo.

Posted by WildCardJT · in r/Cuphead · 1 month ago
post image

This technique also dodges the skull bubble so all you need to worry about are the spike walls which you can see coming from the far right side of the screen. If you get the distance right(you'd need to be closer than what's shown in the photo) you can even spam whetstone allowing for insane dps. If you plan on using this to get an S rank I'd recommend first practicing on normal just to get a feel for the correct distance.

3 upvotes on reddit

Easily Chef Saltbaker. Lots of things to dodge in the first two phases. A janky third phase. And difficult platforming in the last phase all add up create the most difficult boss in the game.

Unironically doing this is so much more fun than doing normal final phase. Way harder, but its honestly barely unfair at all.

1 upvotes on reddit
WildCardJT · OP · 1 month ago

I personally just dislike the petrifaction gimmick entirely so having a way to get around it is nice for me. I don’t think it’s really harder though as, outside of the initial positioning being a bit tricky, you get to completely invalidate two out of the three attacks of that phase and can be at the perfect position to either spam whetstone or have all three of Chalice’s bullets hit.

Start with the tutorial and master parrying. You hopefully got plenty of practice for that in expert mode. Remember that Cuphead is able to jump, and that he can also dash. Spin in a circle for three seconds in the overworld if you really need help. Good luck, kid!

Expert Mode is a Pile of Shit

Posted by Tantalus-- · in r/Cuphead · 1 year ago

I finished the game a couple days ago on regular mode and loved it, thought everything about it was pretty good and since everything was pretty manageable on regular, I figured I'd go for the platinum. I start out with the expert mode trophy and after doing all bosses except the ones on isle 1, I can confidently say that expert is a lousy boring mess. It absolutely sucks and feels like shit to play. Now I understand the difficulty is increased and it is supposed to be harder, obviously, but this is truly pathetic. The amount of spam and boring shit they added to these fights makes it feel like I'm bashing my head into a brick wall every second. Its incredibly disappointed as I did enjoy the regular game, but expert is just a master class embarrassment from the devs in game design. Seriously I have no desire to touch this game ever again once I am done with this boring ass mode except to play the dlc on regular mode. If I wanna challenge ill go elsewhere to better made games that make challenge fun and rewarding, something that cuphead just isn't.

TLDR: Spam and bs nonstop is lousy and boring to play. Stop the dick riding and go play a good challenging game like Hotline Miami.

Expert mode is better. It feels like they made Expert and balanced it perfectly, then removed attacks to make Normal mode.

Sounds like you need to play more! It feels impossible when you start but I managed to grind my way to beating it all on Expert and it was super satisfying.

Yes, as we know, Cuphead is not an easy game. Mainly because of the boss fights. You gotta have skill for sure. This game really puts you to the test. I’ve been playing this since 2020 and maaan.. it feels damn good to get an S rank, especially one handed. Cuphead and Sekiro are the two games that really tests my skill. Are you a fan?

Cuphead expert mode tips

Here are some key tips for mastering Cuphead's Expert Mode:

  1. Learn Boss Patterns: Each boss has specific attack patterns. Spend time observing their moves to anticipate and dodge effectively.

  2. Use Parrying Wisely: Parrying not only helps you gain super meter but also provides invincibility frames. Prioritize parrying pink objects to stay safe during intense moments.

  3. Upgrade Your Weapons: Experiment with different weapons to find the best combinations for each boss. The Spread and Charge shots are often effective, but the Lobber can be useful for certain fights.

  4. Super Arts: Utilize Super Arts strategically. The Invincibility Super Art can save you during tough phases, while the Giant Ghost can deal massive damage.

  5. Co-op Play: If possible, play with a friend. Co-op mode allows for more opportunities to revive each other and can make some bosses easier.

  6. Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t be discouraged by repeated failures. Each attempt helps you learn the boss's mechanics better. Use the practice mode to refine your skills.

  7. Stay Calm and Focused: Expert Mode can be frustrating, but maintaining a calm mindset will help you react better to challenges.

Recommendation: Focus on mastering one boss at a time. Once you feel confident, move on to the next. This approach helps build your skills progressively and reduces overwhelm.
