TL;DR Hogwarts Legacy is compatible with multiple consoles including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Each platform offers different benefits such as performance or exclusive features.
Console Compatibility
Hogwarts Legacy will be available on a wide range of platforms including the Xbox One family (Xbox One, Xbox One X), Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC [1]. This broad compatibility ensures that players with both older and newer consoles can enjoy the game. However, some users have expressed concerns about performance on older consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, suggesting that these might not offer the best experience compared to newer models
[3:1]
[3:4].
Performance Considerations
For those deciding between consoles, performance is a key consideration. The PS5 and Xbox Series X are likely to offer better graphics, faster load times, and additional features like haptic feedback on the PS5 controller [4:2]
[5:4]. If portability is important, the Nintendo Switch could be an option, although it may not handle the game as well as other platforms
[2:1]
[2:6]. For those prioritizing mods or high-end performance, a gaming PC would be ideal
[4:1]
[4:7].
Exclusive Content and Features
PlayStation versions of Hogwarts Legacy may have exclusive content for a limited time, which could influence the decision for those who want access to all available features [2:3]. Additionally, the PS5's adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are enticing features that might sway players towards this console
[5:4].
Future Console Considerations
While Hogwarts Legacy is compatible with last-gen consoles, future sequels may not support them due to hardware limitations [3:1]
[3:4]. Players who plan to upgrade their gaming setup might consider investing in current-gen consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S to ensure compatibility with future releases
[5:9].
Recommendation Beyond Discussions
If you own a capable gaming PC, it would likely provide the best overall experience due to its power and flexibility. For console gamers, the PS5 offers unique features that enhance gameplay, while the Xbox Series X provides robust performance and quick resume capabilities. If budget constraints are a concern, purchasing a current model used or opting for the Xbox Series S could be a cost-effective choice [5:10].
The Series X isn’t apart of the Xbox One family though Arghhh it really is confusing people
Literally says right in the article that it is coming to the series x.
No what I mean is, they’re confusing the Series X to be apart of the Xbox One family, when it’s separate. Should’ve just said Xbox ecosystem
Can’t wait
Still dont care.

I'm very excited for this game to come out. Maybe this is trivial but I would love help deciding which console I should get it on. As of now, my thought is to get it on my PS4, next in line would be Nintendo Switch, and in last place Xbox one.
*I have no plans to upgrade to the newer consoles. I will run my ps4 and xbox one into the ground*
Should be Nintendo last place..feel like it's going to look like a 🥔 on that handheld
I'm still rocking my xbox one x, feel like il get excellent visuals and at 4k 30fps for Hogwarts Legacy though also hoping theyl add a performance mode(1080p 60fps)
PS WILL HAVE SOME exclusive content for like a year from what i know so definitely Playstation !!!
Like more than the deluxe version?! That does help keep my choice for ps4! Thank you!
you should check it yourself i am not sure how important it is but it is about hogsmeade i think
I can't imagine it's going to run well on Switch at all tbh. Probably very little difference between XB One & PS4 performance so either of those would be fine.
I feel like if you have an option between getting it on PS4 or switch you should definitely get it on PS4.
Obviously the switch version will be worse because the system just can't handle anywhere near what the PS4 can handle.
Yes, that was my thought too. Switch was next in line just because of portability.
If portability is your main concern, then yeah, Switch. If game performance is your concern, PS or XB.
Ha... witch console
The ps5 is already 4 years old. Id say it's very unlikely that any AAA-games will be released on ps4 in the coming years
I guess time to start saving for ps5.
By the time the sequel would come out, the PS6 would be around the corner. It is impossible that they release a game on hardware that would be 12 years old. It would be like releasing a PS3 game now
No.
great explanation too
I know. Thank you.
I'd be really disappointed if it comes to PS4, that would mean they have to make lots of restrictions that shouldn't be made as the PS5 is out for more than 3 years (we even had a Pro released in the meantime), that means it's not next-gen anymore, it is the current-gen and PS4 is only last-gen (it is 11 years old!).
Small games could be released there still, for sure, but not something as big as a HL sequel imho...
First and foremost, I am obviously SO excited about Hogwarts Legacy and cannot wait to play like I'm sure the rest of you also feel.
I was wondering if anyone has done any research yet or has any resources to help make the decision on which platform to get the game on. I have a PS5 and Gaming Laptop - and am torn on what platform I'd like to get the game on initially.
Obviously, the game is being made by Sony, so the initial thought would be PS5 is an obvious choice. But I have been thinking a lot about how I want to play this game. If I purchase it for PS5 it would seem to reason that this game would be tied to my home console and I'd have to be home to play it.
However, there is a certain appeal to me to get it on PC so I can play off my laptop (which would spec out to play the game smoothly) and take it with me anywhere I would want to play and if I was home, just connecting the laptop to the TV and playing as if it was on console as well.
Ultimately, everyone is going to have their own preference for play format, but just wanted to see if others have started thinking about this as well and looked into pros / cons of either option.
Thanks!

- UPDATE -
Thank you all for the initial feedback! My laptop is a Lenovo Legion 5 (full details below). So I think that it would handle the game well enough and play smoothly and that portable experience may end up being enough to sway me to the side of getting it on PC.
One thing I saw a lot of people say down below in the thread that I hadn't considered was the PS5 Controller with Haptic Feedback. This is definitely something that intrigues me enough to give me pause on going PC vs Console but not sure if it's enough.

LAPTOP DETAILS:
Lenovo Legion 5 : 15IMH05H 81Y6000DUS (Intel i7-10750H 6-Core, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti, 15.6" Full HD (1920x1080))
Sony is doing marketing. Nothing to do with development. The best platform is always a good gaming PC. Second choice will be PS5 or Xbox Series X (usually the difference is that PS controllers feature haptic feedback while the Xbox lets you quick resume/ whether either feature justifies getting one over the other is debatable), after that your best choice would be the Xbox series S or the best console from the last generation. Finally in worst place you would have the base last gen consoles PS4/XB1 and the switch (which will most likely stream the game and require a strong wifi connection).
While I definitely agree that PS4 and XB1 are in last place, I wouldn’t bet on them streaming the game. At the moment Xbox only offer game-streaming as part of their Game Pass Ultimate membership, and it’s only select game pass titles. PlayStations approach to game streaming is similar.
So it’s likely that the games will run locally… but very poorly. I would imagine XB1 would run the game @30fps, with dynamic res and much lower crowd density etc
Oh for streaming I was only talking about the switch. And even then its a maybe.
This is a lie, Sony studios is giving them advice in development and partnered with them for the haptic feedback. At launch best experience will be on PS5, over time best experience will pivot to PC. Don’t give advice if you don’t know the facts that have been widely shared
HAHA follow your own advice and stop typing with ignorance. Do you know what haptic feedback is?
Avalanche Software is a third party developer that is including a specific technology for a specific device, nothing more than that. You are objectively wrong about the best experience, neither current gen console (PS5/SeriesX) can perform better than a gaming PC. They simply do not have the power to do 4k, high frame rates, quick load times, and ray tracing all at once, they have different modes for different trade offs. Therefore, the best experience will be on PC as it always is (this is coming from a console player who prefers using that but isn’t delusional.)
(Edited to add this) Just so you are aware, when you are told “the best playing experience will be on PS5” that is marketing, not information. Be critical, it will help you in life.
If mods will be a thing then pc would be the place to go. If I didnt upgrade my pc yet by then I'll go for the ps4 version.
The Laptop is a Lenovo Legion 5 with Intel i7-10750H 6-Core, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti. I think that ought to be enough to run it properly enough. I do have a home PC as well - I have wondered if my progression would save across Home PC to Laptop - any idea on that? Same account, different devices?
I appreciate your feedback to the original question!
The game is not being made by Sony it's being developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. If you have a good enough PC I would get it on that imo
This is great to know - thank you for sharing your thoughts! I feel confident enough that my Laptop can probably handle it. One thing others mentioned in the thread that was an added wrinkle for me is haptic feedback in the PS5 controllers... which is an intriguing thought, but I'm not sure if it's enough to sway me away from my laptop!
Thanks again for helping with the decision!
Since its being developed for every platform, I doubt they will add any special mechanics that use the haptic feedback. They would essentially be closing that feature off for the rest of the community, which is probably not what they want to do, given what they've said in interviews and blog posts.
While I’d love to play on pc, my laptop is experiencing a glitch where I can only use my second monitor. So I’ll be using console, not only because of the glitch, but bc I want to see it in 4K.
Dang! Sorry to hear about your laptop glitch atm! Hopefully that can get resolved because I'm sure the 4k is going to be incredibly immersive!
I’ve never owned a gaming console before (I watch a lot of people game though on YouTube and I have gamed before on other people’s consoles) so when I saw that Hogwarts Legacy was coming out I knew it was time for me to get a console mostly so I can play the game hahah. But I will definitely start playing other games on it though because I love horror games! I have two jobs that I work 40+ hours and make tips at one of them so I’m gonna splurge and get the all digital PS5. But I’m not gonna buy it until we’re closer to the Hogwarts release date so I’ll slowly save money up for the console and the game! I’m just curious if anyone else is having to do the same or something similar haha!
If I hadn’t gotten one during quarantine I’d would be buying a console for the game. The good thing is compatible for both PS4 and Xbox one So you don’t even need the newest gaming console and both of those will still be going cheap while not being completely obsolete yet.
That being said, get the series S for the next gen performance for 40$ more than what Xbox one S are going for MSRP right now.
It’s definitely worth it then wasting your money on a one S
Or purchase a current model used for much cheaper
I was thinking about preordering the Ps5 but after seeing the trailer I’d rather wait and see if there’s a special edition console to come with the game.
PC ftw
That controller's swaying me tbf. Unless it's supported on pc from launch I'm almost definetly getting a ps instead of upgrades. Adaptive triggers and haptics are just too damn enticing
Why wouldnt it be supported? Steam has native DS4 support so I assume by the time HL comes out its gonna havebsupport fpr the next get on controllers
I’ve been gaming since I was a kid and got Pokémon in 1998 for Gameboy. Love seeing new people get into the medium! Video games are becoming one of THE art forms of the future. Hope we Will get more Harry Potter games after this one as well!
If you happen to already own a desktop PC, you might be able to save some money and just buy a second hand GPU to play the game.
I don’t own a PC unfortunately!
Doing the same here ;)
So about 2 months ago, i've decided to buy the PS4 version of Hogwarts Legacy because i own both the PS5 and the PS4 and i thought that it would be better if i can play it on both consoles. I've waited for more than 5 in-game days in Hogwarts Legacy and i still haven't seen the Hogwarts Express. Is the Hogwarts Express only a PS5/PC exclusive detail in the game or does it also appear on the other versions of the game?

There is only one part I can think of where you see the train and it's story linked. You cannot miss it
I was flying around the Hogsmeade Station bridge the other day, doing Merlin Trials and Ancient Magic hotspots when I noticed the train going over the bridge.
It's one of the few things you can occasionally see in HL, the other ones (I know of) being a dragon flying over the lake or snatching a sheep/cow and the squid showing its tentacles above the lake's surface (but haven't spotted these two yet). :)
You can track the dragon in the world map.
I've already played the game through 2 times and that quest too, but is it actually possible to see it outside of the questlines on the PS4 version? I've seen multiple videos on Youtube where people jump on the train from Hogsmeade Station.
I've not seen this myself. Let me know if you find out
I play on PS4 and I’ve seen it.
Did you saw in that one quest or outside the questlines? I really wanna take some pictures of it but i haven't seen it by far
Just as the title says. I really want to play, but I don't know what platform to buy it on!
Probably PC since you can also have mods if you want. I also seem to read about quite a few people having problems on the Xbox platform. I personally have PS5 and it works seamlessly but that was not one of the options lol
It worked fine for me on the Series X, but I have seen a lot of problems on the older generation consoles.
Ahh thanks! Haha yeah I don't own a PS5 unfortunately
Isn't the ps5 and Xbox series X about equal?
I would imagine if you have the option it’s always better to go with PC because of all the mods that will come out for any game. I play on ps5 and am constantly jealous of people that get to install what looks like super cool mods
This is usually the argument and I love mods but I maybe mod 1% of games in the end that I buy on PC. Such a backlog that I beat a game or grow tired of it and move on. 😅
I got you. I specifically wish I could play the Elden ring convergence mod or the ds3 one, those mods are the ones I’m jealous of. The mods where it adds a new experience to the game.
As an owner of a PS5 version... i will recommend you PC if you PC can handle it. Because of mods. They can make the game so much better than it already is for me. Game doesn't seem to have many option to improve on xbox or ps5. So that is my suggestion.
Depends on if you like mods
I love playing on my PC for modding and stuff
Up to you. I sit at a desk for work and couldn’t imagine sitting at a PC and gaming all afternoon so I go console.
Tell that to my Gf. She is doing playthroughs of all the houses.
To her credit, there are exclusive missions
Mission* singular. There is only a single mission that varies between houses and Hufflepuff low-key kicks the other houses' asses. Honestly one of the few aspects of HL that really disappointed me. I really thought they would introduce more nuances between the houses to emphasize the different characteristics of each.
There was PlayStation exclusive content?
Yes, there is a haunted shop in hogsmead that you investigate. Its actually a pretty fun mission.
Too late now. I already beat the game and deleted it off my Xbox. These companies have to realize that delaying content that can make you money is so idiotic. Especially when you do year long exclusive content. I would've probably bought the content if it launched same day when I had the game downloaded.
You already bought the game… tbh they don’t care if you redownload for an extra quest or not. And they said features and updates, not paid downloadable content.

Or dont buy games that dont have all the content available on your console, that sends the message, buying the game and complaining does not send the message
Who said I'm complaining? I'm just pointing out a fact. I'm a die hard Harry Potter fan. I would've bought the bonus content day 1 and all my friends who are also die hard fans would've bought it. That's lost revenue. I'm pointing out they could've made even more money just having parity. I don't care one way or another about the subject.
The exclusive quest came in the standard editions of the PlayStation game. So they wouldn’t have made any more money off you.
Plus I’m sure PlayStation paid big $$$ for exclusivity which probably outweighed the lost costs of non PS gamers waiting to buy the game.
Not to late at all. You bought and beat the game, despite knowing you were getting less content....
I guess it'll give my wife something to do , I myself already finished everything in the game so less interested in revisiting the game for some minor quest/puzzle.
Exclusive content is kind of dumb, some people worked hard to make it so 50% or less people (whom own the game) won't even bother to check out after so long.
It is a fun game to hop on and play for a few hours even when not specifically focusing on a "playthrough," imo.
Just hopping in to walk around hogwarts and maybe clear a bandit camp is worth keeping it installed for me. I just hope they clean up performance a bit and i'll be happy.
I’m confused as to why hogwarts legacy was an announcement help me!
It is nintindo switch 2 upgraded, from what I gather from the trailer the upgrade is seamless transitions presumably no loading screens when going to shops like on other consoles
Oh duh okay thank you
I never finished Hogwarts on the original switch because I couldn’t stand how glitchy it was. I am super excited about it coming to switch 2! Does anyone know if it will be a paid upgrade like BOTW and how much it’ll be?
There is a $10 upgrade going on right now if you have the digital game. You just have to buy it from the web eShop
I have the physical game, I can’t see the upgrade on my store.
The original Switch version was nerfed considerably from a performance standpoint, particularly around animations/details within the castle and then the amount of fog in the overworld.
So... recently a guy from Brazil managed to test the old-gen versions of Hogwarts Legacy on Xbox One S and PS4 Slim:
He basically said this:
PS4 Base:
* FPS Lock : Keeps a locked 30fps with almost no drops.
* Unlock FPS : Has an average of 46fps and can go higher in closed areas.
Xbox One :
* FPS Lock : Has some drops to 26fps but maintains 30fps most of the time.
* FPS Unlock : Has an average of 34fps and can go higher in closed areas.
[EDIT]
El Analista de Bits recently posted a video of the game running on PS4, the game has some downgrades like reduced draw-distance and reduced shadow quality but the visuals remain remarkably close to the PS5 version.
Base PS4 runs the game at 900p and PS4 Pro at 1080p. (For comparison, the Xbox Series S version also runs at 900p)
I will say, I'm quite impressed, I really expected the game to run a lot worse, it's almost impressive to see this on a 10 year old console, the delay of months to polish the versions for the weaker consoles really paid off , it makes me hopeful and curious about the Switch version.
I just want to see how they are gonna pull it off on the Switch
I mean on switch it will be cloud gaming, so if you are getting it on switch you better have good internet that never disconnects
Base PS4 runs the game at 900p and PS4 Pro at 1080p. (For comparison, the Xbox Series S version also runs at 900p)
This confirms what everybody knew: the Series S version was far from optimized. It is magnitudes stronger than either PS4/XB1 yet Performance targets the same 900p.
Hopefully whatever wizardry they used for the 8th gen consoles can be applied to the 9th gen ones so we get better performance and resolution.
Actually, the Xbox Series S is not that powerful.
It has an excellent CPU and has the advantages of SSD speed, but sins a lot in RAM (it is only 10 GB and only 8 GB are used for games, compared to Xbox One X has 12 GB of RAM for example or the PS5 and Xbox Series X which has 16 GB of RAM) and its GPU is considerably slower than those of new consoles (it has new generation features but its GPU has only 4tflops while the Xbox One X has 6Tflops and PS5/Xbox Series X has 10~12TFlops).
It was made to be a cheap and accessible console so these cuts were necessary, but that is why when compared to Xbox One X some games like Watch Dogs Legion, Cyberpunk 2077 or Hellblade have less quality textures, shadows with lower quality, bad draw distance and lower resolution in Series S, but in contrast he almost always wins in performance and can reach 60fps very frequent.
Digital Foundry made a comparison of the Xbox Series S with the Xbox One X which I highly recommend watching.
The Xbox Series S may be less powerful than the Xbox One X, but ignoring resolution, the Series has superior graphical features.
the Xbox Series S is not that powerful.
It is though, especially compared to the consoles in question (PS4 and XB1).
There is no world where those 2013 consoles with 2009 architecture can pull off 900p/30 and the XSS cannot do 1080p/60 or even 1440p/60 if textures were optimized.
its GPU is considerably slower than those of new consoles
? The "new consoles" are beside the point, we know they are stronger than the XSS. That's why it is €200 cheaper.
GPU power matters little here anyway, as texture quality is near-identical between XSS and XSX/PS5 despite the teraflop gap.
Digital Foundry made a comparison of the Xbox Series S with the Xbox One X
I watched it long ago, and if you did you would know their ultimate conclusion: that while a SSD can help the One X boost loading times considerably, ultimately its CPU is massively weaker compared to the Series S.
Again though, nobody was talking about the One X (or the PS4 Pro)... you want to take shots at the Series S for no reason. lol
The PS4 runs at a higher framerate than my 3070 and Ryzen 7 3700x. First time I see a dev shitting on next gen and pc players to release the best old gen version ever.
You can't just look at frate rate numbers alone. What about resolution you are playing on PC? On PS5, Series X it is 4K 30fps and 1440p 60fps. How about graphic setting? Next gen (current gen) graphic settings are high. PS4 version lower many graphic settings such as draw distance, particle effect, lighting etc.
If the PS4 was able to run games like Reddead2 or Horizon forbidden west, The last of us2,GOW2, then why not Hogwarts Legacy, Bravo Avalanche 💗
And, despite a few frame drops here and there, Elden Ring still looked fucking gorgeous and packed with detail.
holy moly, I didn't expect it to run higher than 30fps, I expected a bloodborne-like experience: unstable fps.
The developers did a fucking great job, at least for old gen, as I know PC release isn't as polished as it could be.
the fact that everyone was bitching about how they needed to cancel last gen versions because it would be a mess and run like crap lmaoo

Recommendation: If you have the option, playing on a next-gen console (PS5 or Xbox Series X) will provide the best experience due to superior graphics and faster loading times. If you're on PC, ensure your system meets or exceeds the recommended specifications for the best performance.
