Understanding the Buying Process
Facebook Marketplace operates differently from traditional e-commerce platforms. There is typically no "Buy Now" button for direct purchases; instead, buyers need to contact sellers directly to negotiate terms and arrange payment [2:1]. This process is similar to Craigslist, where transactions are handled personally rather than through an automated system
[2:2].
Communicating with Sellers
To purchase an item, you should message the seller to discuss the price and logistics of the transaction [2:3]. It's important to confirm details like meeting location and payment method beforehand. Many transactions occur in person, with cash being the most common form of payment, although some sellers accept digital payments via Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App
[2:1].
Safety and Security Tips
When buying items, ensure safety by meeting in public places during daylight hours [4:4]. Check the seller's ratings and profile to gauge their reliability
[4:1]. If you're purchasing expensive items, consider meeting at a police station lobby or another secure location
[4:6].
Using Facebook's Purchase Protection
For items that can be shipped, Facebook uses PayPal to process payments, offering some level of purchase protection [3:2]. If an item isn't delivered, the seller won't receive payment, and you can dispute transactions if necessary
[3:2]. However, this protection only applies to certain items, so it's crucial to verify whether it covers your purchase
[3:1].
Etiquette and Flipping Items
If you plan to buy and resell items on Facebook Marketplace, it's advisable to take your own photos and write unique ad descriptions [5:1]. Using different accounts for buying and selling can help manage perceptions and avoid conflicts
[5:3]. When flipping items locally, be aware that some sellers might notice and react negatively if they see their items relisted at higher prices
[5:4].
I've recently started selling items on FB marketplace with no problems, however I'm trying to purchase something and on the laptop, there is no BUY or BUY NOW button at all. I've tried different web browsers and it does not make a difference. So I tried my mobile app. I've made sure they're up to date. And on one, there is a BUY NOW button but it's greyed out. What am I doing wrong? FB won't answer any of my messages and the sellers don't believe that I cannot click BUY NOW.
Same. I can’t figure it out either and no one seems to know the answer. It shouldn’t be this difficult!!

Why do none of the listings have a purchase option, how do I even pay for something. I've never used FB marketplace before?
Think of it as a non-anonymous Craigslist for sale section.
You message the person and negotiate a price.
You message the seller and work out the details with them.
You reach out to the seller and make a plan to meet. Once you see the item and decide you want it you pay, typically in cash but some accept Venmo, PayPal, cash app, etc
Hello! I have purchased many things from fb market place before in person, but never through the “buy now” option where the seller can ship the item to you. I am a little nervous to try this for the first time, so I have a few questions.
How secure are payments?
If I never receive the item do I loose my money?
What happens if the seller just sends like an empty package?
Can I press buy now and the seller just never ship the item or does Facebook alert them somehow that someone is trying to purchase their item? (Hopefully this one makes sense). If the seller never acknowledges me trying to purchase their item does fb cancel the payment after a certain amount of days?
Thank you!
Facebook actually uses Paypal (in the background) to process payments.
If the item is never delivered to you, the seller will never get paid. If they were to not acknowledge the order at all (and never mark it as shipped), it'll just be a temp charge and it'll drop once the transaction cancels out.
Facebook support generally sucks, but you could always open a dispute if they send an empty package.
Most of your questions are probably answered here:
https://www.facebook.com/policies/purchase_protection/disputes_and_refunds?_rdr
If you're that intent on buying stuff on Facebook for shipping, maybe reach out to the seller first and ask a question or two, just to confirm they're real, responsive, and care about the sale. Otherwise, I'd avoid it entirely.
Isn't this only for purchase protection items? Or all items
I would never say "all" items, because if the item isn't bought for shipping and paid through Facebook, none of the above matters.
Thank you! That actually really helped and I generally avoid post that say they will ship it out but I went ahead and took your advice on messaging the seller, hopefully the respond. Thanks again!

Hello!!! >.< So I recently found out that Facebook has a marketplace so I came here on this Reddit. I found some listings I’m interested in. I collect figures, Funko Pops, Marvel Legends stuff like that. I saw that Facebook has a lot of them for reasonable prices and have products I want, that are usually hard to find anywhere else but one problem is that I rarely use Facebook.
I’m a bit sceptical because I see that we cannot buy within Facebook like Amazon or any e-commerce platforms, you have to deal with cash or transfer.
Can you guys give some tips on the Facebook marketplace? How to tell if a seller is legit or anything? Is it better for cash than transfer? What to do if I ever get scam? I know I can just google these tips but I would love to know other people’s experiences and wisdom :3
Ultimately you can’t always be 100% sure if the person is legit or not as occasionally, a scam would get through. But you can easily weed out a good chunk of them by:
1 - do not ever try to meet at night. There is no reason why you need to do this at night.
2 - Ask to meet at a very public area. Mall, Starbucks or other very popular coffee place, etc. Also go with a friend if you felt you want to.
3 - If their account has a lot of bad rating, avoid it at all cost. I’m talking about like 1~2/5 star rating and some are telling us that this seller is a scammer or flake or whatnot.
4 - If there’s no real pictures of the actual product or has very poor quality pictures + description is either non-existent or lacking, this might be red flags. Not 100% guaranteed this is a bad sign, but you’d assume that if someone really wants to sell it, they’d at least make some form of attempt at pithing what they’re selling, no?
5 - Please, do every seller a favour and ACTUALLY TELL THE SELLER YOU HAD CHANGED YOUR MIND AHEAD OF TIME!!! Don’t just say nothing or decided you don’t owe them a response if any crucial change to the plan has been made. Also when the seller asks a question, please respond ASAP and don’t be crying to the seller that they had sold it right from under you if you are slow to respond. <— All of this had been one of the common issues with buyers who doesn’t care about the seller’s schedules and had the nerve to rate negatively.
6 - also please don’t send the “Is it still available?’. While many don’t really have an issue with this question, most have an issue with the lack of responses right after. Add a tiny bit of extra to let them know you are actually legit interested and didn’t just pressed it by accident.
7 - the morning of the day where you are scheduled to meet with them, ask them politely a few hours before the meetup to confirm the meetup to prevent them from suddenly “FoRgEtTiNg” to tell you something popped up or they are already selling it to someone else.
8 - Its best to deal with cash only. You should really only do e-transfers or any digital payments with someone you buy or sell things to very regularly. Just my 2 cents.
This is the most helpful comment here. All of these things! I buy/sell weekly but once you buy a few items you will get the hang of it.
One thing worth noting is potentially making friends. Your items are kind of specific and you might have a lot in common with sellers. I met my bff on marketplace and just made another new friend recently too. This is more of a statement, but exercise caution and use your gut.
OMG Thank you for this 💖This is really helpful
I've started using it recently as well, in fact just had my first sale. 100% not worth the hassle. People on FBM are nuts. You have to weed out the nutjobs and the weirdos with liberal use of the block button. Don't be afraid to block people that give you a weird vibe.
You can rate people there after exchanging a few messages, even if you don't do a transaction, which is really odd to me. So if I'm having a convo with someone and it doesn't go anywhere, I block them so they can't give me a bad rating. Even if they were nice/friendly/cool, whatever. A couple of people gave me bad ratings before I figured that out. You didn't accept my lowball offer, so you get a bad rating!
Tons of low ball offers from ppl trying to resell whatever you have or they want you to deliver your $20 item 40 miles away because my car got flooded lol and nonsense like that.
In short, like every other aspect of Facebook, the Marketplace sucks bad. Thank you for coming to my TED talk
When selling always confirm the date and time. Meet the buyer in a public area near you. I meet buyers at grocery store parking lot within 1 mile from my home. If it's a very expensive item, or a high risk item like an Apple product, PS5, watch, etc I will only meet buyers inside a police station lobby near my home.
I only accept exact cash - no exceptions.
I allow the buyer to inspect the item and I ask if they have any questions. I go over any issues the item may have (I would have listed these in my ad but I do it again so there are no issues after the sale)
After the sale. I block the buyer and DELETE the listing. That way the seller doesn't message me back 45 days later with buyers remorse or any problems they might experience after the sale.
I set the meet-ups after my work day when I'm on the way home, or on the weekends.
I never deliver.
I always send the buyer a google maps link to the meet up location AND ask they message me when they leave their house with an ETA.
I don't meet anyone after 7 pm nor do I wait more than 15 minutes unless I hear back from the buyer promptly.
If I get weird vibes from the seller, or I feel that the buyer will be a problem I block them ASAP.
I will not "hold" an item. That seldom works well
If the sale wont produce a $25 sale I wont list it.
I donate lesser items to my local community store.
That is an excellent comprehensive list as a seller. I agree on the cash part. If I have a really good vibe I may take Zelle on an item over $300. I do not take bills over $20s as the pen to spot fake bills is not always reliable. I will meet people with alot of cash at the bank and deposit it. I did this with a $500 and $1000 sale.
Yeah it's true, the pen is not always reliable. It's good to know at least 1 other way to check the cash for fakes (like scratching your nail on the president's collar or having a UV light to check the security thread)

I do not use FB either but do sell on it. Commented below on the sell side. As a buyer, look at what else they are selling and have sold, look at their ratings, look at their profile both FBMP and FB. I like to see where people are coming from. If out of state/country, I ask how they will be meeting me and then they go radio silent. Since your purchases are not heavy items, meet in a public place like a bank lobby, library, etc, during daylight. After you agree day/time, reconfirm a couple hours ahead of time. Carefully look at the item. If it is too cheap there is likely a reason. If you have a question ask it in the nicest way as some sellers are not responsive or receptive to questions. The most polite people have been the easiest. If in doubt do not buy it. I was and continued to be shocked how many nuts are in FBMP. There are lots of great posts in various Reddit Subs that are super helpful. Good Luck!
Thank you for the advice!! I really appreciate it <33
Title pretty much says it all. I have been buying on Facebook marketplace and selling on Facebook marketplace. What is the proper etiquette? I usually buy my items within an hour from me. I'm always afraid that someone is going to see the same item and call me out on it being listed the other day for cheaper. I've been flipping log splitters, campers, mowers, furniture, pull behind smokers, patio furniture. So far I have not been called out, but I always feel weird that the seller is going to see their item for more. Also what do I tell people when they ask how long I've had the item, or where it came from? I don't want to lie, but I also don't want to come out and outright say that I flip items. Thanks in advance
I have multiple accounts. I tell the same story every time. Bought it last year secondhand. So happy with it, I upgraded to the newer model. Which is true, because I also flip the newer model 🤣
I buy with 1 account and sell with the other. I also bid on my own items with the buyer account. Not to ramp up the price, but just to set a minimum price.
Uhh.. where do you bid on items on Facebook Marketplace?
Lol, why the downvotes? I only bid to set a starting point. If I have something on sale for 200 and am willing to sell for 170, I put a bid of 165. If I don't, people start placing ridiculous bids of 50. Saves me the time of calling them names and blocking them. 🤣
When I travel an hour or more away from my home town I’ll have a quick look on marketplace while I’m there. Then sell in my hometown. I’ve had an angry person victimise me once and I’ll never buy locally to flip on marketplace again, I don’t need the angst. Of course if I’m gonna sell it on eBay I don’t mind sourcing it locally. As a female I’m probably more aware of implied threats than some men?
I have been called out and it is usually people that were going to do the same. Someone that actually wants it will pay market value
Block button is your BFF, along with hide from friends. New photos.
I buy and resell on FBMP and OfferUp. The only etiquette I can think of is to not use the same pics from the original seller. For goodness sakes take your own pictures of the item you are selling and write your own ad post.
Not sure why I am suddenly unable to buy anything on Marketplace. Has this happened to anyone else, and if so, were you able to fix it somehow?
same, i also checked with the rest of my family, and theirs dont show different either. facebook marketplace has been broken for a while for me
Yes no fix that I know of
So is this a common problem? I have spent SO much time searching for information on FB/Marketplace on how to fix this and find nothing. It's just so random and there's zero reason as far as I can see. I had purchased a few things in the past, and now when I see something I'd love to buy, I have no way to pay for it. It's infuriating!
It happened to me. The only solution I have for you is to create a different account, using a different payment option. I sadly had to do that. I never did anything against the rules, and I have contacted FB Marketplace several times. No one has been able to help me. It's going on 2 years now before I ever even sold anything on local Marketplace. It's crazy.

Did your payment method expire?
Nope, definitely not expired.
Hi,
I am browsing through Facebook marketplace and found no "Buy Now" button for any of the listings. It used to work fine; why suddenly has this button vanished? Any idea what could be wrong? I am not able to buy anything through the Facebook marketplace. I submitted help requests, no response yet from the Facebook.
Same issue. Wife can buy things but I cannot.
DM I'll send a link a guide to contact them
⚠️!!CAUTION!!⚠️ There is an entire scam set up around fake Facebook support. A buddy of mine had his account hacked and someone gave him a “customer service” number. When he called, they said they needed to access his phone or computer to address the problem. Once they connected, they installed a hidden app which extracted all of his account details from all of his accounts linked to his phone and transferred the information to them. Bank accounts, personal Facebook, emails, you name it. What a nightmare.
May not be the case here, but not sure why anyone would need to dm the Facebook customer service process.
Can you send me that link? It's impossible to contact FB support anymore...
May I also have the link?
Me also 😅
Try to check after 24hours sometime algorithm do that. It can even hide your listings based on your activity
I checked it. Its still the same.
You have to contact support team
I am having the same exact issue. I am glad found this post this issue was making me go crazy smh.
Sadly, no solution yet. I have been using my wife's account to buy anything through the facebook marketplace.
Any update? Same issue here

I checked it and it looks so interesting. And surprisingly the sellers even tell if there's any fault in item. And prices of item seem ok too. Have anyone tried buying from there and ho was experience? And should I buy things I like from there? (ig it depends on product review) And what's up with somethings written as "free"?
Full of scams
You mean not as they look in pictures?
Yes
I logged into the app this morning after posting a bunch of items on my facebook account last night. I’ve been using marketplace since it came out to get rid of unwanted items, it’s been great. Last night I took pictures and posted a bunch of things. Only a couple things had shipping enabled in case that matters and they were all less than $100. This morning I logged in and it said “you can’t buy or sell on facebook”. Any ideas how to get this fixed? I keep clicking “request review”, then it pops up again and again.
Can you reply to my comment with the link again? I’m getting an error about the link being broken. There isn’t a “request review” button anywhere on my marketplace.
The link is above
This got my account restored really quickly. They wouldn’t tell me why. I also had to do it a few times. A couple people didn’t care that I was banned for no reason and stonewalled me.
Thanks 🙏
I'll try it
This is happening to lots of people for no good reason, search this thread. Just click Request Review and wait 24 hours to 7 days.
Did not do anything. Found a way quicker option below

How to buy on Facebook Marketplace
Here are some key considerations for buying on Facebook Marketplace:
Create a Facebook Account: You need an active Facebook account to access Marketplace. Make sure your profile is set up and trustworthy.
Search for Items: Use the search bar to find specific items or browse categories. You can filter results by location, price, and item condition.
Check Seller Profiles: Review the seller's profile for ratings, reviews, and mutual friends. This helps gauge their reliability.
Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to message the seller with questions about the item’s condition, history, or any other details before committing to a purchase.
Negotiate Price: Many sellers are open to negotiation. Politely ask if they can lower the price, especially if you notice any flaws or if the item has been listed for a while.
Arrange Safe Meeting: If you decide to buy, arrange to meet in a public place during daylight hours. Bring a friend if possible for added safety.
Payment Methods: Cash is the most common payment method, but some sellers may accept digital payments (like PayPal or Venmo). Ensure you agree on the payment method beforehand.
Inspect Before Buying: Always inspect the item thoroughly before completing the transaction to ensure it matches the description.
Recommendation: Always trust your instincts. If something feels off about the seller or the deal, it’s okay to walk away. Safety should be your top priority when buying online.
