How to Care for a New Stick and Poke Tattoo

Initial Care

For the first few days, it's crucial to keep your new stick and poke tattoo open to the air and refrain from applying any products. This allows the skin to breathe and begin the healing process naturally [1:1]. After this initial period, you can start gently applying a fragrance-free moisturizer or tattoo butter daily to keep the area hydrated [1:1].

Cleaning Routine

Stick and poke tattoos require regular cleaning to prevent infection. Use antibacterial, unscented soap to wash the tattoo gently twice a day [3:2], [5:1]. After washing, pat the area dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry. Avoid using scented soaps or lotions as they can irritate the skin.

Moisturizing

Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of a suitable moisturizer such as Aquaphor or a non-scented lotion like Lubriderm or Hustle Butter [4:3], [5:1]. Be cautious not to over-moisturize, as this can trap bacteria and lead to infections [1:3].

Avoiding Irritation

It's important to avoid picking at scabs or scratching the tattoo, as this can cause irritation and affect the healing process [3:1]. If your tattoo is located in an area prone to friction, such as the hip, consider wearing loose clothing to minimize rubbing [4:8]. Additionally, avoid exposing the tattoo to direct sunlight and swimming pools during the healing period [4:6].

Healing Time

Stick and poke tattoos typically heal within two weeks, though smaller designs may heal faster [1:2], [2:2]. Larger or more complex tattoos might take longer, so continue to care for them diligently until fully healed.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your stick and poke tattoo heals properly and maintains its appearance over time. If you notice signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or pus, consult a healthcare professional promptly.

3: It could be scabbing as the tattoo heals, but this could also be a sign that you're overmoisturizing.

I got weird bubbly bumps on one of my professional tattoos that weren't warm or crusty and didn't hurt, but that my artist confirmed were an infection from bacteria getting trapped under too much moisture from lotion and damp weather. I kept washing regularly and cut back to moisturizing about once every three days (I live in a REALLY damp climate) and it healed beautifully.

  1. for the first few days keep it open to the air and do not apply anything to it. After a few days gently rub some fragrance free moisturizer or tattoo butter in daily.

Keep it out of the sun, and do not pick at it

  1. go slow, go one pass at a time and don't try to do too much at once. On subsequent passes only poke the spots that are missing ink. After 3-4 passes you should have a decent line

  2. depending on how long ago you poked it, it could be dried blood and plasma, keep an eye on it and as long as it doesn't look infected, it should heal up alright

  3. pre packaged tattoo needles. Which size you choose will depend entirely on your design and how big it is

  4. 2- 4 weeks roughly

Advice on after care

Posted by RelationshipGlad4047 · in r/StickAndPoke · 4 years ago

Hi I just got a stick and poke yesterday but unfortunately walked home and didn’t wrap it up, I’ve cleaned it quite a few times with anti bacterial gel and wrapped it for an hour once I got back but I’m wondering will it get infected? It’s not sore or itchy at all and only a tiny bit red but morning noticeable. If I keep cleaning it twice a day should it heal and if so how long will it take to heal?

Put some non-scented moisturizer on it after you wash it with some non-scented soap :) worked wonders for mine, when I otherwise most likely would’ve gotten an infection.

I heal mine just like any other tattoo. Wash it gently twice a day with antibacterial, unscented soap (I prefer dial), apply lotion. Don't touch it otherwise for 2-3 weeks. I have never had a tattoo of any kind heal in a day or 2.

Stick n pokes don’t need a lot of aftercare cuz they don’t go as deep as a regular tattoo, just try to keep it clean, pick up some antibacterial soap and wash it every once in awhile, don’t pick at the scabs or scratch it, try not to touch it ext... they don’t take that long to heal, maybe a day or two

Stick and poke in hip area?

Posted by isntAJemo · in r/sticknpokes · 5 months ago

I work at a waterpark but I can probably get away with avoiding pools and baths during the healing process. However, I'm worried about my bathing suit or undergarments rubbing up against it and I'm worried about not taking good enough care of it and having it end up infected. Tips and tricks for how to care for this stick and poke? I drew this and tried to make it as simple as possible. Also is it safe to use sharpie as a stencil when doing stick and pokes, I know tattoo artists do it but I just want to check and make sure!

don’t get a tattoo if you are worried that you can’t take care of it correctly. you need to educate yourself on the basics before giving yourself tattoos. use the search function in this subreddit, there are HUNDREDS of posts with helpful information

It’s not that I’m worried I can’t take care of it, just the friction of pants and stuff make me think it’ll get all scratched up!!! Thank you so much! I went to see care instructions on the tattoo subreddit and anytime A&D is brought up there’s always an argument in the replies 😭

1 upvotes on reddit
OrdinaryStresses · 5 months ago

A&D is not something you should use on a fresh tattoo. wash 2x a day with unscented antibacterial soap, pat dry with a paper towel, apply a THIN layer of moisturizer (lubriderm, hustle butter) and then leave it alone. keep in mind sun is also bad for healing tattoos, not just pools

The skin in this area is very elastic and moves a lot, I wouldn’t recommend tiny silhouette like that. They are not very contrasted in shape and risk becoming dark blobs in a few years even with good care.

Using second skin maybe! I got a tattoo on the rib just where bra sits and second skin really protected during the healing process.

ive gotten tattoos in that exact area. i wore boxers and high waisted loose pants or skirts just make sure the waistband it not rubbing on them and its loose over that area. if i bent down the tattoos would be folded on themselves so i had to be careful about that. luckily i was at home the whole healing process so i washed the tattoos in the shower after everytime i used the bathroom for like the first week but just make sure you wash them as directed multiple times a day and use aquaphor or whatever your artist recommends to keep them moist dont touch them unless your hands are clean and you are cleaning or applying something to it and change your clothes that touch the tattoos at least twice a day because its underwear on an open wound.

Wash with antibacterial soap, pat dry with clean paper towel or let air dry, slather with aquaphor, repeat multiple times per day. Don't pick at it, don't peel at it. Try not to let it touch.... things. For example, every time your needy dogs jump into your lap and rub on your brand new tattoo... wash and aquaphor it. For a small simple tattoo, do this for maybe one week, for anything larger or with color, shading, etc, 2-3 weeks, and even those timelines, aquaphor it often for good measure.

Aftercare advice for a sticknpoke?

Got this cutie but it’s my first stick n poke, the others I have are all machine. My tattoo artist said healing would be quicker because it’s kinder to the skin, is this true? Is there anything I need to consider/change for aftercare? I got second skin anyway because I’d just prefer not to think about it

Stick n poke aftercare?

Posted by ILoveBoba88 · in r/sticknpokes · 5 years ago

So I have decided to start taking stick n pokes more seriously. I will buy proper supplies next time I do a stick n poke tattoo. I am saving my right arm for a huge professionally done dragon, so left arm is for poking! Yesterday I did a stick n poke of my gf's name and I don't want it to get infected. The tattoo
is a little swollen, better than yesterday. I keep my tattoo clean and don't sleep on it weird or anything.

If you go to the gym or have a job that requires a lot physically & makes you sweat be sure to wash the tattooed area with water extra carefully when you're done, avoid sun exposure & apply a thin layer of fragrance free ointment on it a couple times a day.

If it itches during the healing process tap on it (with clean hands!!) instead of rubbing or scratching!

This might be a bit extra but you can also make sure your sheets are clean. Making sure you have fresh sheets, a fresh towel etc is a good extra step to avoid possible chance of infection!

The swelling has been going down today. I think my body doesn't react well to speedball India ink, next time I'll definitely use real tattoo ink and needles if I can get it.

romalexandra · 5 years ago

Yeah I mean to be fair might be because even tho its non toxic its not meant for tattoos ‍♀️ Real tattoo ink costs about the same as india ink but is a 100 times better and worth the wait it takes for it to ship to you, so I whole heatedly recommend getting the real thing and ditching the india ink completely! :)

Basically, keep it clean, don't use harsh soap, moisturize it with something unscented (a lot of people use vaseline, a lot of people use cera ve), and don't go in communal water until it's had some time to heal. Some people say a month, others six weeks or more. You can leave it uncovered or cover it with something like tegaderm or plastic wrap if you think it needs protecting.

You can reduce swelling by taking ibuprofen or aspirin (if that's okay for you medically), or by using a cold pack in a cloth at short intervals.

I see why you’re stressed. Stick and Poke’s can be dangerous, especially when done by someone who is not experienced. The signs of an infection include swelling, redness, pain in the area, and leakage of pus. The best thing to do is to visit a doctor for it, just to be safe. Redness is common after a stick and poke, though. I’d suggest applying antibiotic ointment to the area and cover it with a bandage, then visit a doctor. So sorry you’re dealing with this, hope everything goes well ❤️‍🩹

I did a stick and poke a few months ago which ended up getting infected. This isn't good advice and I wouldn't recommend it but I kinds just scraped and dug out all the ink, after that it started to heal fine. Didn't leave a pretty scar but I mean hey, no more infection. I'd definitely go to a doctor tho

Advice on aftercare?

Posted by TheSimFan · in r/sticknpokes · 4 years ago

I’m doing my first stick and poke today, I have done a lot of research on doing the actual tattoo as well as ordered the best quality supplies but just want to go over after care advice.

I have plasters to cover it but how long should I cover it for?

After I stop covering it, what’s the best care? Regularly washing it or keeping it out of water?

How often should I moisturise? Will Vaseline be okay to moisturise?

dont use vaseline!! it’s traps moisture which is exactly what you do not want with a fresh/healing tattoo. You can use either A&D ointment or auqaphor. I’ve used both & I personally like aquaphor more. I just use that for a few days, usually around 2-5 days, and then switch over to a regular unscented lotion twice a day, more if it feels really dry. Also, I never cover my tattoos. Some do, some dont. I have always read/heard that the only reason shops cover it is so that it doesn’t get exposed to anything on your way home. Although if you do decide to cover it, everything I have read/heard has said to make sure not to cover it for more than 6 hours. Keep it out of water until it’s healed (showers are perfectly fine, but don’t take a bath or go swimming or anything where you have to soak it) Also make sure that the soap you’re using to clean it is an antibacterial soap

you can use it during the actual poking process! applying a thin layer helps to keep the ink from pooling, but it’s not recommended during the healing/aftercare process!(:

Overnight, then wash twice a day with a mild soap and moisturize regularly (thin coat, after each wash and whenever it feels like it needs it). Pad the area dry with a clean towel after washing, don’t rub it.

how to care for a new stick and poke tattoo

Key Considerations for Caring for a New Stick and Poke Tattoo:

  1. Keep it Clean:

    • Gently wash the tattoo with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the area.
    • Pat it dry with a clean towel; do not rub.
  2. Moisturize:

    • Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer or a specialized tattoo aftercare ointment (like Aquaphor) to keep the tattoo hydrated.
    • Avoid heavy creams or lotions that can clog pores.
  3. Avoid Picking or Scratching:

    • Let any scabs or peeling skin fall off naturally. Picking can lead to scarring or color loss.
  4. Limit Sun Exposure:

    • Keep the tattoo covered or apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when exposed to sunlight to prevent fading.
  5. Avoid Water Immersion:

    • Refrain from soaking in baths, pools, or hot tubs for at least 2-3 weeks to prevent infection.
  6. Watch for Signs of Infection:

    • Monitor for increased redness, swelling, pus, or severe pain. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare professional.

Additional Tips:

  • Follow the Artist's Instructions: Always adhere to any specific aftercare instructions provided by your tattoo artist.
  • Stay Hydrated and Healthy: Good overall health can promote better healing.

By following these care tips, you can help ensure your stick and poke tattoo heals well and retains its vibrancy!
