What Redditors are Saying

How to Clean a Laptop Screen Safely

TL;DR Use a microfiber cloth dampened with distilled water or a 50/50 mix of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol. Avoid spraying liquids directly on the screen.

Microfiber Cloth and Distilled Water

The safest method for cleaning a laptop screen involves using a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth dampened with distilled water [1:3][2:3][4:1]. This approach minimizes the risk of scratching the screen and avoids leaving streaks. It's important to apply the water to the cloth rather than directly onto the screen to prevent moisture from seeping into the device [2:1].

Isopropyl Alcohol Mixture

A mixture of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol can be used for more stubborn smudges or fingerprints. A recommended ratio is 50% isopropyl alcohol and 50% water [3:2][4:2]. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates quickly and leaves less moisture behind, making it safer for electronics compared to other alcohols [3:1]. However, it's crucial to avoid pure isopropyl alcohol as it may damage anti-glare coatings [3:9].

Avoid Direct Spraying and Harmful Chemicals

Directly spraying any liquid onto the screen is discouraged because it increases the risk of moisture entering the device [2:2]. Additionally, ammonia-based cleaners and acetone should be avoided as they can damage the screen's coating [3:6][4:2]. Regular glass cleaner without ammonia can be used sparingly [5:1].

Commercial Products

For those who prefer commercial products, Whoosh! is mentioned as a safe option used in Apple Stores [3:7][5:3]. It’s designed specifically for cleaning screens without damaging them.

By following these guidelines, you can safely clean your laptop screen without risking damage. Always remember to power off your device before cleaning to ensure safety and effectiveness.

A clorox wipe will do. Ive used it plenty of times on my screen with no problems. If youre worried about water damage, use something like a paper towel with a little bit of water. Also why is it so dirty

Ig its due to improper cleaning. Sometime if we try to clean it with unsuitable materials it just does the opposite of cleaning. Happened to my TV screen

Just use a microfiber cloth and some filtered water. Been doing that for my laptop and it makes it still look like it's only a year old despite it being almost 8 years. A clean laptop means a longer life.

Tap water has contaminants in it, and if you're with hard water you can actually scratch your screen. I've used microfibers and distilled water since windows 98 on my crt monitors, never seen a screen cleaner.

I follow Apple's recommended practices:

>To clean the screen on your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, first shut down the computer and unplug the power adapter. Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water only, then use it to clean the computer's screen.

>To clean hard-to-remove smudges or fingerprints on the display or exterior of your Mac, you can use a cloth moistened with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution to gently wipe the display or enclosure of your Mac laptop.

Source: How to clean your Apple products - Apple Support

I use the microfiber cloths that I use to clean my glasses as the "lint-free cloth", which works well. A screen that is a dirty as yours may take several repetitions to get clean. Be patient. Be gentle.

My best and good luck.

Jesus man, I get that' she's pretty but but stop aiming for the screen. You're going to end up fathering an iPod nano.

Seriously though, Apple’s own guidance is the baseline for “safest” here:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/103258

  • Use a soft, lint‑free microfiber cloth (not paper towels, tissues, or abrasive fabrics).
  • If dry wiping isn’t enough, slightly dampen the cloth with water or a 50/50 mix of distilled water and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Never spray liquid directly on the device — apply to the cloth first.
  • Avoid bleach, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia cleaners (like Windex), aerosol sprays, or anything abrasive.
  • For stubborn smudges on glass (iPhone/iPad/Mac display), Apple says 70% isopropyl wipes or Clorox disinfecting wipes are safe for glass and metal only, not for leather or fabric surfaces.

If you want a single all‑around “safe” kit:
A high‑quality microfiber + small bottle of 70% isopropyl in a mist sprayer covers every Apple product without risk.

Does anybody know which ways isopropyl alcohol is safer than ethyl alcohol for screens?

2 upvotes on reddit
Valuable-Captain7123 · 1 month ago

I don't recommend either, people have had it damage the anti glare coatings that these have.

1 upvotes on reddit
ImproperUseofMonkeys · 1 month ago

Yes - when cleaning screens (like laptops, phones, TVs), isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is generally considered safer than ethyl alcohol (ethanol) for a couple of reasons:

Lower water content in high-purity IPA - Electronics-safe IPA is typically 90%-99%, meaning it evaporates quickly and leaves less moisture behind. Many ethanol products (even "high purity") have more water or additives, which can seep into edges, cause streaking, or damage anti-glare coatings.

Fewer additives and denaturants - Consumer ethanol is often denatured with other chemicals to make it undrinkable. These additives can leave residues, attack screen coatings, or cause discoloration. High-purity IPA sold for electronics usually contains no such contaminants.

Gentler on oleophobic and anti-reflective coatings - Ethanol tends to dissolve these coatings faster than IPA at the same concentration. Repeated ethanol cleaning can make touchscreens feel less smooth or look cloudy sooner.

Lower volatility hazard for plastics - Ethanol is more likely to stress or crack certain plastics in bezels or casings compared to IPA.

L
lubeskystalker · 1 month ago

That pattern on the screen is what is left of the anti reflective coating, likely dissolved by ammonia wipe. My car infotainment screen looks the same, I didn’t even wipe it just touched it briefly while cleaning underneath.

If water is not sufficient, you can add some isopropyl alcohol, but make sure it's mixed with water (50%iso 50% water). You can also use higher dosages since isopropyl alcohol is a weak solvent, but try 50/50 first. (You can even buy monitor wipes with 75% isopropyl alcohol 25% distilled water straight from the market)

(While 100% isopropyl alcohol should be safe, the issue is that it's not safe for all monitors, and it's not worth trying it out)

Isopropoyl alcohol. Not other alcohols. Alright? No Acetone. Don't do what my friend did.

A glass cleaning cloth is fine.

With LCD screens, you are fairly safe with about any type of cloth or even paper towels. I typically use a cotton cloth and windex or even damp with warm water. Largely depends on whats handy and what you are trying to get off of the screen.

I just turn them off and wipe with isopropyl alcohol on a paper towel or microfiber cloth. Avoid drips.

For laptops, it’s good to spray the keyboard with compressed air first. You can get a canister from photography shops, it’s used on camera equipment.

Thank you for submitting a cleaning help request. In order to facilitate more accurate and helpful replies, please make sure to provide the following information in your post:

  1. Type of material/surface being cleaned (to the best of your knowledge)
  2. Type of dirt/stain to be removed (if known)

I did a lot of research when I was gifted one. It’s been a while though. I found a couple studies (one more academic and one more social media… can’t remember a whole lot) that basically said it didn’t harm but didn’t really help. Not the greatest source of information.

But what I found MORE telling was the complete lack of studies with results that supported the use as effective. I mean, if you had this “revolutionary new product” that was tested to absolutely work, wouldn’t it be genius marketing to use legitimate studies to back up your claims? Yet, I actively searched. And I watched a lot of commercials and sponsored content. I saw everything from ease of use, coolness, what’s going on in the world today… and a surprising lack of actual data. Listen to the words that are being said… carefully crafted words promising nothing

Durability? Workmanship? Innovation? Sure!

And lots of things implying but not saying what you want to hear, because people Will hear what they want to if given the right prompts.

Out of curiousity, I did a new search since the post is so old. More studies have apparently been done, so you might want to look. My information is probably out of date half a year later

Watching this video now. I may need to backpedal now

If you want to disinfect thoroughly without wipes, get some 99% isopropyl alcohol, distilled water, a spray bottle, and a disposable microfiber cloth. Mix a solution that is 70% alcohol and 30% water and put it in the spray bottle. Then remove the case from your phone or tablet, spritz the cloth with the solution, and thoroughly wipe down your phone. Do not reuse the cloth.

No alcohol, it’s bad for the adhesive holding the display to the case, and it damages the rubber on the sides. Use a little bit of water to dampen the cloth (doesn’t have to be distilled) if you’re having trouble getting off any of the nasty stuff, like spit spots - I’m guilty of it. For the most part, the cloth alone does 95% of the work.

How to clean a laptop screen safely

Key Considerations for Cleaning a Laptop Screen Safely

  1. Use the Right Materials:

    • Microfiber Cloth: Always use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth to avoid scratching the screen.
    • Cleaning Solution: Use a solution specifically designed for electronics or a mixture of distilled water and white vinegar (50/50 ratio). Avoid ammonia-based cleaners.
  2. Power Off the Laptop:

    • Always turn off your laptop and unplug it from the power source before cleaning to prevent any electrical issues or accidental input.
  3. Dampen the Cloth:

    • Lightly dampen the microfiber cloth with the cleaning solution. Never spray the solution directly onto the screen, as it can seep into the edges and damage internal components.
  4. Gentle Wiping Technique:

    • Wipe the screen gently in circular motions. Avoid applying too much pressure, which can damage the screen.
  5. Dry the Screen:

    • If necessary, use a dry part of the microfiber cloth to gently buff the screen and remove any streaks.

Additional Tips:

  • Frequency: Clean your screen regularly (every few weeks) to prevent buildup of dust and fingerprints.
  • Avoid Paper Towels: Do not use paper towels or rough fabrics, as they can scratch the screen.
  • Check Manufacturer Guidelines: Always refer to your laptop manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations for specific instructions.

By following these steps, you can keep your laptop screen clean and in good condition without risking damage.
