TL;DR Use compressed air, soft brushes, and microfiber cloths for cleaning. Avoid using water or wet solutions directly on electronic components.
Compressed Air
One of the most recommended tools for cleaning computer fans is compressed air. It's effective in blowing out dust without physically touching the delicate parts [2:2]
[5:2]. When using compressed air, hold the fan blades still to prevent them from spinning excessively, which can cause damage
[5:7]. Be prepared for dust to scatter, so it's advisable to clean in a well-ventilated area
[5:1].
Soft Brushes and Microfiber Cloths
For more stubborn gunk, using a damp paper towel or microfiber cloth with a gentle all-purpose cleaner (APC) can be helpful [1:1]
[1:2]. A small brush, like those used for hair trimmers, can also assist in reaching tight spots
[5:3]. Ensure that any cloth or brush used is electronics-safe to avoid static discharge.
Disassembly for Thorough Cleaning
If you're comfortable with disassembling your computer, removing the fan and heatsink can allow for a deeper clean. This process might involve reapplying thermal paste when putting the heatsink back on [5:1]. Disassembling allows you to access hidden dust bunnies and clean thoroughly
[2:2].
Avoid Water and Wet Solutions
While some users suggested using soapy water for cleaning other types of fans [4:2], this is not advisable for computer fans due to the risk of damaging sensitive components through moisture or static disturbance
[5:6]
[5:7]. Always ensure that any cleaning method used is dry and safe for electronics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance can prevent excessive dust buildup. Some users recommend cleaning every month or two, especially if the environment is dusty [3:2], while others suggest once a year may suffice
[3:4]. Regularly checking and cleaning can help maintain optimal performance and prevent overheating issues.
It’s my first time cleaning a PC. I’m using an electronic compressed air gun and some light brushes to clean it and everything has gone smoothly except all the fan gunk. How do you guys get it off? Do you have an electronics wipe or electronics safe solution you’d recommend?
Side note, NZXT doesn’t include any filters on the H6 case, just a grate. Do y’all put in your own mesh (or something else) for filters? Or just let it ride with the grate?
Microfiber with soft APC
This was my instinct, but I wanted to make sure before I went for it, popped back in here, and someone called me an idiot for doing it lol thanks!
Damp paper towel?
as the title says, how do i clean my fans? newbie here, just upgraded my ssd and i saw my fans we're dusty, just wondering if it's safe and easy to clean fans?
You can use compressed air to blow off dust while holding the fan, preventing it from spinning much. Or you can simple use a cotton swab if ur not comfortable with that. If you’d like to go for a deeper clean you can also remove the top metal plate of the fan to clear out hidden dust bunnies, you’d prolly need a smaller screwdriver, but compressed air should blow any out anyways.
will it not break some part or component in my latop? and isn't the dust will just go deeper when i use the compress air?
and does it has a way to remove the fans only not with the thermal metals and such?
As long as you can see the fan’s find through the laptop’s vents then the dust would be traveling out the vents, usually the dust can only go somewhere else in the fan’s housing.
As for the thermals, some may come out without having to remove the copper heat sink so you’d have to check.
What should I do to clean the fans? What kind of tools should I use? I will probably clean them soon.
So earlier I posted about my heatsink being stuck to my 4-year-old GPU. Finally got it off — just walked into this IT shop and the guy had it fixed in like, 30 seconds. Got home, slapped on some new thermal paste, and figured I might as well clean the fans too. Bro… no wonder my CPU was cooking at 95°C and my GPU was chillin’ at 80°C.
Big thanks to everyone who gave me advice on my last post.
My fan woke me up at 3am last night making a fucking horrid grinding noise. Got it cleaned and no more sound. Now I’m gonna clean my fans every month or two lol
Once a year would suffice. You don't need to clean it monthly.
The environment it’s in is pretty dusty ngl
I also recommend replacing the thermal pads, they look very dirty.
Yea i was surprised how dirty they are ! I will change them next time I’m cleaning the fans
Looks the same as my 3,5 year old asspire 7 lol
Howdy
Damn that's a lot of gooch
How can I clean the dust off my fans? Not ceiling fans, just regular desk fans. They collect so much dust. I've tried vacuuming it and wrong with wet cloth but some parts are really hard to get to. Thanks for any tips!
You can take the cage off, turn the spinner nut the wrong way, the blade comes off.
I put them in the shower with some warm soapy water.
If you can take the cage apart to get to fan blades, start there. For the cages, use that gooey slime they use for cleaning car vents and crevices. recipe
use those compressed air spray cans
u can get them at computer shop or hardware store i gess
remove the fan, blow out with compressed air, or use some kind of small brush ( hair trimmers have those small brushes in the box for example )
Couldn’t get the fan off I don’t have a really long screwdriver ; so I just vacuumed the dust out
NO NEVER DO THAT IT CAUSES STATICAL DISTURBANCE AND COMPONENTS ARE SENSITIVE ALSO IT CAN SPIN UR FANS FAST ENUF TO CAUSE DAMAGE
Air spray can. I recommend taking all the parts out and spraying them off. Also put new thermal paste on the cpu.
A nice big bucket of soapy water should do the trick.
If you feel up to it. The whole thing can come off. The whole thing being the heatsink and fan. If you take off the heat sink then you would need to re apply thermal paste to the cpu before putting the heat sink back on. If that is not your cup of tea a can of compressed air could do the trick but be prepared for dust everywhere for that. Other than that everyone else seems to have that covered.
i am not able to clean them because i don't have enough space for hands to get in and neither do i have good cleaning equipment
hairdyer chala de bina fan pakde 🥰
bina fan pakde matlab?
sarcasm se bolra tha bhai , fan nikal ke hawa marde fan ka blade ghumna nhi chaiye
BLOW THEM
Farting could help /s
It's not that simple yet not that complicated too.
I'll tell you why. So my laptop fan wasn't properly working and I figured that it was happening because of dust and dirt. So I opened up the back pane, removed the fan. Unscrewed it very carefully and cleaned it with a brush. Reassembled it just the way it was and its working smoothly now.
If you can be careful, cause the screws are gonna be tiny as hell, try doing it else don't if you think you'll mess up. My screw drivers didn't fit the small ones So I had to use the tip of my knife but it worked lol.
Im looking for suggestions on the best way to clean the blades when my compressed air electric cleaner isn't enough to remove all the dust?
Unfortunately my PC sits on a roller shelf thats only a few inches off the floor and getting dusty quick.
Thanks!
You'll have to take the fan out and then use isopropyl alcohol on some kind of cloth or even paper towel and just manually wipe it down, carefully. Sometimes Q-tips with isopropyl alcohol might be good enough.
Get a small enough bottle brush.
Buy some mesh and magnetic strip to reduce dust.
You could buy a paint brush or make up brush for fans. Avoid anything with synthetic hair as they do build up static. There's also ESD specific brushes but they tend to be a premium price.
I use brushes with soft bristles to do that.
The only thing that’s worked for me is qtips honestly. I’ll get the surface dust off with canned air. Then I’ll hold the fan in place with one qtip and gently wipe off the dust with another. Annoying and time consuming, so if anyone has a better way I’m all ears
Hi. So I've been using my laptop for quite more than a year, and i noticed that the fans really need some cleaning. Any advice on good ways to clean them at home?
You could buy a can of compressed air and just blast them from the outside while keeping the fans still with the help of a small object or open it up and clean it with a brush or cloth. Make sure to hold the can upright and don't hold for too long, otherwise you might start expelling liquid propellant.
Appreciate it man
I just use a 10$ Bosch air blower, every week to keep my laptop and my workplace dust free, works perfect for me 👍🏻
Model is Bosch GBL 620-Watt Air Blower
Literally clean it every month to avoid accumulation.
Also, if it's dusty in your place try using an Air purifier.
How should we clean them? I opened my 2020 Legion 5i once to add ram and an M.2, but this laptop is a b***h to get inside. I planned on blowing it every 6 months, but now it seems daunting considering the hard plastic shell.
And fuck this shit, ain't gonna get no $500 air purifier for my $1000 laptop.
Winix HEPA air filter costed me $220 at Costco. And is good for your health as well as for your computer.
I have the same opinion about this laptop is wonderfully but is a bitch to open j upgraded my ram day one and I don't want to open it again to clean it, I clean it with compressed air from the side vendings, I also blocked the fans with a wire show that they don't move as I clean them .
Thanks! Using compressed air? Or a cotton swab? Should I unscrew it to clean it on the inside or is that a bad idea?
A hoover is your friend and some will get inside. So maybe every 6/12 months compressed air on the internal fans.
Do you clean it by taking the back panel completely off or blow the dust off of it while it's closed like this?
My area is extremely dusty. I routinely take the bottom off every 2 months and blow everything out with compressed air (holding the fans so they don't spin).
I did consider an air purifier, but to keep all the dust out it would be pretty expensive. I'm going to wait until I move back east next month and see how the dust situation is out there. :)
It's not too bad. I have a Legion 5 17IMH05H (Intel) and the hardest part is popping the bottom cover off in certain spots. There's a couple spots where I have to use my little thin shims to get in and pop it out. But, once I learned where those spots are....popping it off now is a breeze. Then all I do is hold the fans still with a finger while I blow out the dust from the fins, and give the rest of it a light spray with the air to remove any residual dust.
If you’re willing to pay for it, there are anti-esd vacuums which is safer as vacuums create a lot of static that can brick the motherboard if it arcs
Every six months remove the back plate and use a vacuum (with non-conducting bristle brushes) to vacuum any obvious dust. Then use a can of compressed air to blow your heat vents, fans and other components and, when reassembled, under each key on your keyboard. If you have a house or place of business with a ton of particulates and/or dust, do this cleaning every 1-3 months.
Every 2 years or so, repaste your CPU and GPU and during this process do the same cleaning as above.
Just wondering how to clean the dust inside my pc without a data-vac
Once every 6 months. Tape the fans/or use a toothpick to stop them from spinning while you blow compressed air at them to clean them off.
IPA 99% with cotton swabs/ or coffee filters are handy as well.
BRO TYSM I was so desperate how to clean my fans right bc I end up having still a layer of dust on it. Putting a toothpick in so they dont move is BRILLIANT.
Toothpick is all well and good but unless you are spinning the fan as fast as you physically can simply holding the fan or using less than 60 psi or so should do it. I have cleaned at 120psi 80,60,35 never killed a fan in the last 10 years of building
I use an electric air blower made for electronics and set my PC near a window with a fan blowing over the case and out the window. I use 99% alcohol and those blue paper towels to wipe down all the easy to reach surfaces. Then blast everything with the duster for a couple minutes, especially my radiators. I clean it on the first weekend of every month since I use it daily and have a cat who likes to sit on top of it.
Anyone reading this should know that regular air compressors should NOT be used. They can spit condensation water. You need a special electronics compressor above commenter mentions.
Do you have a recommendation for an air compressor that’s safe to use on a PC? I don’t love using the compressed air from a can
what air duster do you use?
This is already assuming the PC is turned off. Compressed air will spin the fans, so the tape/toothpick is meant to stop them from doing so. It’s both to prevent dust from getting everywhere and the fans from generating electric current that can ruin components.
i only clean mine when it needs it. maybe once a year. dust filters help a TON
Hi just wanted to ask about this, may I ask how much dust builds up when you do this once a year? And how do you know when it's time for a clean?
Yeah I think i'm a little bit of a clean freak when it comes to my pc lol. Spent money on making it look nice so would like to maintain it somewhat dust-free hahaha.
I've built PCs with and without filters and yeah, the filters essentially eliminate the need to clean your PC. Quickly pop out the front filter, wipe it off and stick it back in. I've had the NZXT S340 for like 6 years now and cleaned it maybe 2-3 times, and none of those times even remotely needed to.
