How to Customize Funko Pops

TL;DR To customize Funko Pops, start by selecting a base figure, separate parts using heat, and use tools like clay and paint for modifications. Consider using the "POP Yourself" service on Funko's website for simpler customizations.

Selecting and Preparing Base Figures

The first step in customizing Funko Pops is choosing one or two figures that will serve as your base. You can separate the head and body by submerging them in boiling water for about a minute. This softens the glue and vinyl, making it easier to detach parts [1:2][5:1]. It's essential to separate the head disk from the neck peg to facilitate easier modifications [4:1].

Modification Techniques

Once you've prepared your base, you can begin modifying it. Many creators use crafting clay or epoxy sculpt to add details or reshape parts [1:1][2:1]. Tools like exacto knives and sandpaper are useful for removing unwanted sections and smoothing surfaces [1:2]. For painting, acrylic paints are commonly used, and a top coat of modge podge can help prevent chipping [2:1].

Tools and Materials

A variety of tools and materials can be employed in the customization process. Commonly used items include Apoxie Sculpt, Tamiya Epoxy Putty, color shapers, x-acto knives, self-healing mats, and acrylic paint sets [5:3]. These tools allow for detailed sculpting and painting, helping bring your vision to life.

Online Resources and Services

For those looking for a less hands-on approach, Funko offers a "POP Yourself" service on their website, allowing users to create custom designs digitally [3:1][3:3]. Additionally, many tutorials and guides are available online, providing step-by-step instructions for various customization techniques [5:2][5:3].

Tips and Advice

Customization can be challenging, but persistence is key. Many creators emphasize the importance of practice and learning from failures [5:5]. Watching videos and reading guides can provide valuable insights and inspiration [2:1][5:2]. Remember, every artist starts somewhere, and improvement comes with time and experience.

How do I make a custom POP?

ORIGINAL POST

I want to make my own custom POP figure, and I’ve seen a bunch of posts about people making them, but is there some website I go to in order to make them? Or do I make one on their website? How do I make one?

Any help is much appreciated!

  1. Pick 1-2 pops as a base. On occasion I’ve seen people use more, but most of the time you’ll only need a good head and body match.
  2. Separate the head(s) and body/bodies by submerging them in boiling water for ~1 minute to soften the glue and vinyl. Make sure you separate the head disk from the neck peg as well. Even if you don’t plan to do a head swap, this step just makes it a lot easier to work with!
  3. You might want to remove some parts of the original or add to it. I just use an exacto knife to cut things off and sandpaper to smooth it out (start with a grit of 60 and work up to 800-1000 for best results). Most people use Sculpey clay to add on because it’s easy to work with and comes in large bricks. I’ve heard of people successfully baking the whole Pop to cure the clay, but I wouldn’t recommend it because baking may cause toxic fumes to come out of the Pop and even leave a toxic residue in your oven. I boil them, and bought a cheap pot specifically for this just to be safe. Just boil up enough water to fully submerge the figure, reduce the flame to a simmer, and leave it in there for 30-60 seconds depending on the thickness of the clay. (I’ve tested it by going as long as 5 minutes. It doesn’t damage the Pop or the clay, just FYI, but I doubt you’ll have any clay pieces thick enough to need 5 minutes.)
  4. Painting! People differ here: You can strip the original paint (I use nail polish remover) and just begin your own coats right away, you can strip the paint and add a layer of primer before painting, or you can paint directly onto the original paint. Do a little of your own research to find out which you might prefer. If you use nail polish remover, make sure it’s high in acetone (not the “gentle on nails” stuff); you can find it at any dollar store.
  5. Use whatever acrylic paint you can find (most people just go for the cheapest), and WATER IT DOWN first so you can eliminate brush strokes and lumps. It’ll take more layers, but the smooth results are worth it!
  6. Use a matte finishing spray (Krylon is the best, but make sure the label says it works on plastic!!) to seal and protect that paint job!
  7. Your pop should be ready for assembly! Pop the head disk back onto the neck peg (you might want to boil the disk for a bit to soften it up) and use a strong glue to reattach the head to the disk. I use E6000 (industrial strength), but I’ve heard some people use super glue (I imagine the gel form would work best) or even hot glue (I don’t recommend it, though, as I’d be worried about melting the plastic).
  8. Done! Take pictures and share them with us here! I’d love to see what you make :)

take a funko top and bottom of the pops which best fits what you are trying to make. repaint and add or remove stuff using crafting clay. you can also buy the diy pop if you just want to color on it. I made a pop of me my gf and our cat , 5 pops went into it , and I ended up crafting a cat bowl, camera for me and a necklace for my gf using the clay.

Any tips on making custom funkos ?

Posted by alho123 · in r/funkopop · 3 years ago

I started getting into making custom funko pops and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on customizations. For my first pop, I made the spirit fish monster from Avatar the last airbender, and I primarily used two part epoxy sculpt, spray paint, and acrylic. It wasn’t too technical because I just added to a diy funko, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips on modifying non- diy pops/ pops that are already designed (I.e. cutting/ removing parts of the pop itself, other painting/ coloring tips, molding techniques, etc.,). Any and all help is appreciated!

Most pops come apart when submerged in hot water and being gentle trying to prise them apart. There are videos online that show how to. You should then be able to repaint or sculpt whatever you want. Putting them back together is easy enough with glue. Just bear in mind some parts like the head may not fit on other necks. The vinyl can be altered with a craft knife to fit. I finish mine with a top coat of modge podge to make sure the repainted parts don't chip. Hope this helps :)

Any tips for making Customs?

Posted by HerrMiggins · in r/funkopop · 3 years ago

I'm trying to get a close friend of mine who's an artist to start making custom pops because the money can be good for a hobby and I really want some lol. Do you guys have any tips for making customs? I have a few specific questions, but I'm sure there's more stuff I haven't thought about. My current questions are

  1. What tools do you need to make a custom?

  2. Do you have to use the bobble heads or can you use the solid ones when swapping heads?

  3. Are there specific kinds of paint and stuff that you should use?

I can only answer question two but head swaps are SUPER EASY. Those are the extent of my custom making. To do a head swap you just boil some water. I think I’ve even microwaved a mug of water before. Then you dip the head in the water. Once it’s loose you can slide the head off and reapply it another body

2 upvotes on reddit
HerrMiggins · OP · 3 years ago

Thanks, thats exactly the kind of thing I would never think to do! I assume you use super glue to attach the head to a new body? Is there a particular method to stop it from getting everywhere?

I actually did a lot of Googling and watched a few Youtube tutorials (some more helpful than others). I'm not very prolific but my customs are some of my proudest Funko pieces lol. I love seeing what other people make.

These are my materials (# 3 to 6 I already owned for years already, but I am no artist):

  1. Apoxie Sculpt, Tamiya Epoxy Putty (self dry scuplting, material of choice)

  2. color shapers (praise these things!!)

  3. x-acto knife

  4. self healing matt

  5. acrylic paint set (heavy body)

  6. paint brushes

I don't bother stripping paint, I just paint over it.

You'll also want a primer (so the paint "takes" on the vinyl) and a matte sealant once you're done.

A lot of people will buy a pop that is similar to what they are going for in shape or size and they work on top of that, like someone who made greymon on here recently used the Jurassic Park Trex pop as a base.

I believe people also 3d print them.

thats the post that prompted me to ask! it looks so good, thank you!

Also a lot of the customs were fucking awful at one time and the people making them probably failed and ruined a lot of pops. You don't see any of that.

The best advice is to keep working hard at it and take your time. Failing is part of getting better.

Custom Funko Fail: Gift Edition - Help!

Posted by Rocky_isback · in r/funkopop · 4 months ago

I'm on a mission to get a custom Funko Pop made as a gift for someone, but I'm running into some roadblocks.

First, I tried the official Funko customizer, thinking it would be the easiest route. Unfortunately, after spending time designing, the final product just didn't look like the person at all! And I had to use a different body from a different gender because of their size. It was disappointing, especially considering the price when I could buy a generic pop for half that.

Then, I turned to Etsy, hoping to find a more affordable option. There are some incredibly talented artists on there, but it seems like the more budget-friendly choices only offer digital images of a custom Pop, not the physical figure itself. While a cool idea, I really wanted to give them an actual Pop.

Has anyone else had similar experiences trying to get a custom Funko made? Any recommendations for reliable and reasonably priced artists or services that create physical custom Pops? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

you could always give it a go yourself? if you find the right ones it's easy as anything to swap everything but the box may be a bit more difficult

Before the pop yourself came online, I paid an artist on Etsy to make one of me. It took close to a year to complete and cost me four times the amount it cost to make one from Pop yourself. A custom one will take longer off of there. Unfortunately there’s nothing that will come quicker than the Pop yourself and for the price.

I measured an existing box I had and created templates in GIMP (free photoshop). I print the parts on plain paper, laminate them, and then cut them out, fold them, and tape them together with double sided tape. Photo paper would probably be better tbh, but don't own a color printer and have to use my library's printer so that isn't an option. DM me if you'd like to have the templates I use.

The most important thing though is to thin your paints with either water or flow-aid and to make sure it has the consistency of skimmed milk. Thinning your paints will take multiple coats but it is so much better than having thick coats of paint that glob up on the pop. Also don’t do what I did when I heard thin your paints, which is getting it to thin with too much water which made it a pain to paint. Just put a little bit of water and get it to the consistency of skimmed milk and you’ll be fine. Good luck!

How to customize Funko Pops

Key Considerations for Customizing Funko Pops

  1. Materials Needed:

    • Base Funko Pop: Choose a figure you want to customize.
    • Paints: Acrylic paints are recommended for their ease of use and quick drying.
    • Brushes: Use fine-tipped brushes for detail work.
    • Sealer: A clear acrylic sealer will protect your finished design.
    • Tools: Craft knife, sandpaper, and sculpting materials (like epoxy putty) for modifications.
  2. Planning Your Design:

    • Concept: Sketch out your idea or find reference images to guide your customization.
    • Color Palette: Choose a color scheme that fits your vision.
  3. Disassembly (if needed):

    • Carefully remove the head and any removable parts using a craft knife. This allows for easier painting and modifications.
  4. Painting:

    • Prep the Surface: Lightly sand the areas you plan to paint to help the paint adhere better.
    • Base Coat: Apply a base coat of paint and let it dry completely.
    • Detail Work: Use smaller brushes for intricate designs and layering colors.
  5. Sculpting:

    • If you want to add features (like hair, accessories, or clothing), use epoxy putty to sculpt new parts. Allow it to cure as per the instructions.
  6. Final Touches:

    • Once painting and sculpting are complete, apply a clear sealer to protect your work and give it a finished look.
  7. Reassembly:
