TL;DR
Starting with Basics
For beginners, it's crucial to start practicing cartwheels on flat ground. This helps in getting comfortable with the motion before attempting more advanced variations or environments like ramps [3:2]. Focus on kicking up enough momentum once your arms are down, as this will help maintain balance and complete the rotation smoothly
[2:3].
Learning a Round-Off First
Some users suggest that if you're struggling with a cartwheel, trying a round-off might be beneficial. A round-off is similar to a cartwheel but involves snapping your legs together and landing both feet simultaneously. It can help you get used to generating lift and maintaining balance [2:1]
[2:2].
Momentum and Body Positioning
When performing a cartwheel, think of yourself as a wheel. This mental imagery can assist in visualizing the fluid motion required for a successful cartwheel [2:4]. Additionally, ensure that you have enough speed and momentum, as these elements contribute to stability during the move
[3:1].
Practicing with Skates or on Ramps
If you're interested in doing cartwheels on skates or ramps, it may initially seem daunting. However, some users find that using the ramp's momentum makes the cartwheel easier than on flat ground [1:1]. Practicing on grass with skates before moving to concrete can also help build confidence and reduce the risk of injury
[1:2].
General Fitness Goals
Incorporating fun fitness goals like learning a cartwheel can be a great way to stay motivated and enjoy physical activity. It's important to set achievable milestones and gradually work towards them, whether it's mastering a cartwheel, handstand, or any other movement [4:4].
Sorry for how out of breath I am lmfao. Any advice to make these look cleaner, be able to do them in motion, or how to do them on a ramp would be appreciated!
My end goal is being able to come at the ramp skating backwards and use the momentum of going up the ramp to fling me into the cartwheel if that makes sense.
What..... Did NOT landing a cartwheel look like? Hahaha this would be so terrifying. I am in awe of you.
Thank you so much lmfao😭 I practiced it in the grass with my skates on first and then took it to the concrete. I actually have only fallen doing this once so far, and it wasn't the cartwheel itself that made me fall, I just tripped on my feet directly afterward lmfaoooo
That looks great. I don't know if this is good news or bad news for you, but doing it backwards on a ramp is very, very significantly easier than doing it on the flat. It's a bit scarier maybe, to begin with it. But once you bite the bullet and commit to the cartwheel the ramp momentum does the whole thing for you, including making the landing much easier as your feet are landing at a lower point than your hands.
I second this. It was super scary to make the attempt bc it feels so weird (especially bc i had to switch my stance) but once I actually did it... i was like... oh that wasn't scary at all. Lolol
This is so impressive!! I love your triumphant glide at the end haha
Such nice flowy movements - are you a dancer?
This might be the most flattering comment I've ever gotten😭😭 no im not a dancer, and I never have been, but i always dreamed of doing something along those lines when I was growing up. Im again so incredibly flattered omg, im always striving to be more flowy and graceful.
Well, you're doing a great job, keep it up!
clean asf
Look up how to do a round off. Then go to cartwheel after that. That'll help teach you to get the lift first.
Isn’t a round off more advanced
I think if you're over thinking a cartwheel, a round off will be easier. It's basically kicking into a sideways handstand, but before you have to worry about keeping any kind of balance in a handstand, you snap your legs together and down.
A cartwheel is a more fluid motion that's harder to break down. So if you can't get your mind and body to match the motion, then it's hard to slow it down and do right.
Maybe you aren't kicking up enough momentum once your arms are down. It makes sense to do it too weakly if you're nervous about it. It's like a bike: the more speed you put into it, the steadier it gets
Try to think like a wheel, be the wheel
You need some Creed power, bro.
I just decided to try throwing cartwheels out of ramps now that I have skates that are 1000x lighter than my old pair. I for sure need more speed and my legs need to work together better lol. But if anyone has any tips I’m open to hearing them 🫶
Have you done cartwheels on flat with skates on yet? I'd start there
I have but I definitely will practice more! It’s the landing that’s throwing me off. I wanna not slam on my toe stops
It looks like you got it and just need to tuck your knees up and commit real hard, you fully rotated and one foot came down solid.
Is there somewhere with a bigger deck, so that you could have a bit more space to land while practising without immediately having to then go down the bank?
Teehee I kinda wanted to make it over to the bank lol…. I was just feeling bold but yeah I should definitely practice somewhere with a bigger deck
It looks to me like you’re reaching for the coping when you throw the cartwheel, which is stealing your momentum. If you pump up the transition more, you likely won’t have to work as hard to get your legs over.
And a cartwheel! I've never been able to do either, now I want to learn both.
Trying to get less weird about diet/fitness/body stuff without giving up fitness/working out bc it's so good for my body and mind, so I'm trying to move away from more traditional goals into some more fun ones with measurable outcomes.
Anybody else have similar silly fitness goals, either now or in the past? Brainstorming for the future lol
That’s cool. Handstands and cartwheels are pretty impressive. Are you trying to hand walk with the handstand too?
I’m just trying to do a human flag/Iron Cross, and grow my lower body so it’s disproportionately larger than my upper body.
Haven't thought about hand walking yet! That might be next lol
Oh human flag is a good one! I'm the opposite, trying to get strength everything above my hips (specifically core, shoulders, dif arm muscles), my legs are strong enough in comparison lol
I just wanna be able to comfortably do 30 pushups at once (without my knees) by the end of the year.
oh that's a great goal! Good luck & have fun!
Trying to do the splits
oh that's a neat one!
Just tryna hit 225 on bench.
oh impressive! Good luck!
I finally ran a sub 7 minute mile barely basically a full on sprint lmao, i started at 12 min a mile
damn that's impressive!
Ahhh - Simon didn't say "hands down."
Legs up then
But real casual-like. Not make a big deal about it, but like I know everybody saw it. Just one stunning, gorgeous cartwheel.
I did this once. I'll occasionally get bored with working out at my conventional gym and take a calisthenics class there to liven things up. The instructor had us jogging around the workout room and was yelling energetically and giving high fives. I impulsively turned a running cartwheel, and she completely flipped out with excitement like it was a magic trick! Later I was torn between feeling like a show off and exhilarated.
You enjoy your shinning moment guilt-free because that was rad ✨!
Whenever I hear the word calisthenics I think of these guys
This guy (or gal) gets it
As much as I love Creed's cartwheel I love when the other girl does it and he's like, "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you."
[Bleep] you Erin!
i’m a snail, actually.
What a rush. That’s all I had to do all year.
r/unexpectedoffice
Given how many people watch The Office on repeat and find a way to shoehorn references to it into every conversation, every single Reddit thread, regardless of the context, is it ever really unexpected?
I think you can!
It’s all I want to be - but I am scared of being upside down.
As a kid I was never able to do hand stands or cartwheels.
Now I’m trying to learn to go into a handstand from an invert, then slide my hand through so you slink down on your shoulder.
This scares me so much.
Does anyone have any tips on how I can improve from here?
I know what you mean! I have no longer a problem with doing advanced invert poses on the pole. But handstands and cartwheels still scare me.
Recently, I've started practicing handstands in a door frame and I feel super safe! I'm less scared there. Give it a try, I can only recommend it.
However, this is only a method to become familiar with handstands. Once you feel confident, you can switch to other methods.
I love this idea, thank you! I’m doing some handstands coming off the pole but I’m still afraid to kick up into one.
It’s a surprisingly common fear among pole dancers so you’re not alone!
I don’t recommend starting with handstands instead start with elbow stands.
Not only will you build strength, practicing elbow stands it will build up your confidence.
Start with something like a forearm prep here’s a FREE tutorial. https://www.studioveena.com/tutorial/elbow-stand-prep-870/
I second this. There are so many moves in handstand stance that can be done just fine in an elbow stand. Though I’m not bothered by being upside down anymore, kicking up into anything scares the poop out of me, so I may be elbow stands for life. 🤣
Tell your instructor about your fear and they will give you a good, strong spot.
ETA: or you might need to tell them about your fear then ask for a good, strong spot. Or they may offer. But there should be verbalization about a good, strong spot, otherwise the instructor might have you work on something else or just practice entrances.
Do you practice with a crash pad? You should until you gain more confidence
This is how I've managed a bunch of moves I was scared of and I've never even fallen on one. Sometimes it really is just a mental barrier. Get a crash pad, ask for a spot, and you might find your fear becomes manageable.
Not every studio has them unfortunately
Man, those are like $100-150 dollars. My pole studio is in Boston (so rent is insane I'm sure) and we only have one, but even they bought one.
If your studio is cheapening out, that's a red flag. Basic safety equipment isn't a tall order. I'd say it's okay to put in a request for one.
Whaaat that’s crazy
Following since this is the biggest barrier for my inverts
INSANE!! I love this sub, you guys are all so inspiring! I never thought to do this while cruising, I've only ever seen people do it while park skating but this is so cool!
Oh and PS your rocking that outfit!! I've been trying to find cargo pants like those and the red is amazing!
Thanks so much!!🥰 I got the pants on SHEIN! In the men’s jogger section!
Ok that’s impressive!
Thank you🥹🤍
🔥🔥🔥 so cool 🤘 keep it up!
Fabulous
I see the skatepark in your future. You have the right amount of daring 🤗😁
She didn’t say she can do one, she just said she knows how.
more of a coach then?
College professor of cartwheels.
I mean, the approach was right at least.
She had it actually. Hands just slipped 😅
She forgot she had to hold her weight. Lol.
Her Arms realized they didn't want to try and hold that weight.
Or you didn't anticipate the effect of dry hands on a slippery floor.
This is totally what happened. And it's very funny.
And your elbows have dimples
Was more of an Eeeyuuuuut
Looks like she body slammed the god damned house
It took me longer than I'd like to admit to realize why this was in this sub lol
I just saw the post, why is it in this sub
Nuns are Catholic
same😂
