TL;DR To embed Vimeo videos on your website, use the embed code provided by Vimeo and consider using plugins for additional customization. Ensure compliance with GDPR if necessary.
Basic Embedding Process
Embedding Vimeo videos typically involves using the embed code provided by Vimeo. You can find this code by clicking the "Share" button on the Vimeo video page and copying the HTML code from the "Embed" section. This code can be directly inserted into your website's HTML where you want the video to appear [1].
Thumbnail and Player Appearance
If you want the video player to appear only after clicking a thumbnail, tools like Squarespace offer functionalities that fade out a thumbnail to reveal the embedded video player. Customization plugins such as Vimeography can also provide more control over how the video appears and behaves on your site [1:1].
Troubleshooting Embedding Issues
If you encounter issues such as a "Verify to continue" message, it might be related to account settings or IP address verification. It's recommended to check Vimeo's Help Center or contact their support team for assistance [3:2]. Additionally, ensure there are no unresolved claims or strikes against the video
[3:3].
GDPR Compliance
For websites needing GDPR compliance, embedding third-party resources like Vimeo requires careful handling of personal data disclosure. Consider using placeholders until consent is given or enabling privacy-friendly settings such as the "Do Not Track" flag in the embed URL [5:1]
[5:2].
Alternatives to Vimeo
If Vimeo does not meet your needs, alternatives like Gumlet, VideoPress, Wistia, or self-hosting videos on platforms like WordPress may offer suitable solutions. These platforms can provide different levels of customization and may better align with your site's requirements [4:1]
[4:4].
Hey guys, I have one question, regarding embedded videos from vimeo.
Visiting the following link you can see embedded vimeo videos. It looks like they embedded the videos regularly with certain presets from vimeo regarding the vimeo player's appearance - but the player appeard after you click the thumbnail. So I was wondering if anybody knows how to do that? Because the way we currently embed vimeo videos on our website is in a way, that the player itself is displayed from the very beginning and thus I only have two options: 1. Display the video with a play button (like the thumbnails on femkehuurdeman's website) but without a usable playbar to scroll through a video or 2. swap it around and display the video with the whole playbar visible.
https://www.femkehuurdeman.com/2023/2/9/2023/2/9/zzgxg20emqyjvv2t8ejr6f3vjtb1ip
I hope you guys understand my question, if not I am happy to elaborate further. Thanks!
I can assume the intended goal, but the link doesnt work for me so I am unable to cater help to the situation.
Apparently it is not possible to link to certain video posts. So here‘s the regular link to the website. You have to navigate to „work“ and then choose a video. https://www.femkehuurdeman.com/
That website using Squarespace. They have a function that will fade out a thumbnail then play the embedded Vimeo video.
You can see the transition in the class labeled sqs-video-opaque
. The opacity is set to 1, then it fades out after you click it.
I'm not 100% sure if these plugins would work exactly how you want them to, given your unique use case, but here are three possible options that provide more customization than you would normally get with a basic embed:
Thanks for the comprehensive answer. Much appreciated!
No problem! Hope it works out in the end :D
Hi! I have a client that posts each week with a Vimeo video embedded at the end of his article. Today, I uploaded the video, as I do each week, and when I go to copy it over, instead of the video it pulls a grey box that says "Verify to continue"
and underneath says "Join the web's most supportive community of creators and get high-quality tools for hosting, sharing, and streaming..."
"vimeo.com"
Both accounts have the highest verification security settings established, so it can't be that. I tried to add an old video, and that worked, but no new ones will let me embed them. Can someone help?? Thanks!

If it's asking you to verify, it might be your IP address and not your account itself - does it also happen when you try to view it on mobile or something?
I'd reach out to their support team and let them know, it might just be some kind of block.
Do you‘ve an unsolved music strike or an other claim on that video?

Like s many of you I've 100% had it with Vimeo even though their two staff picks pretty much gave me my career. Has no one found a passable alternative for hosting streamable vids to embed in websites? Thanks!
If the site is built with WordPress, check out:
VideoPress US$10/month (or so): https://videopress.com
Or perhaps self hosting (ie- uploading an MP4 to your Wordpress Media Library). That and a bunch of other embedding ideas are mentioned in this WP Engine blog post: https://wpengine.com/resources/wordpress-video-embed-how-to/
I don’t understand why frame.io doesn’t offer this. People are BEGGING for another option that’s not price or Vimeo
They probably don’t want all that extra traffic.
Wistia
I second Wistia
I came across Gumlet while conducting my own research to move away from Vimeo. Ended up giving it a shot, and it’s been solid so far.
Embedding was easy, the streaming quality's been reliable, and it doesn’t feel as restrictive. I also like that I can tweak the player to match my site’s look. Not perfect, but it just does what I need without getting in the way. Might be worth a look if Vimeo’s not cutting it for you.

Hi! My company wants to embed videos hosted on Vimeo on our website but are unable to do so due to GDPR compliance – Vimeo tracks everything. Has anybody else used Vimeo or any other video platform for video hosting and website embedding that is GDPR compliant? Or is there a workaround that we're not seeing? Any and all info is appreciated thanks!!
This is a cookie issue (PECR in the UK, ePrivacy Directive in the EU), not a GDPR issue. You need consent via the cookie banner before allowing it to track users (so blocking the video before consent is given).
Alternatively, enable the Do Not Track flag in the embed URL. https://complianz.io/embedding-vimeo-videos-privacy-friendly/
Taking into account cases like Fashion ID and Google Fonts, embedding third party resources on your website necessarily discloses personal data such as the visitor's IP address to that third party. This is an even more fundamental problem than potential tracking cookies.
In general, there are two paths towards compliant embeds:
You have a suitable legal basis for disclosing visitor personal data to the third party data controller. In the majority of cases, this will be "consent". For example, the embed could be replaced with a placeholder that explains the privacy implications of loading the third party content, and offers a consent button which would then load the actual content. This is the approach typically chosen for YouTube videos, social media posts, Google Maps, …
The embed provider is not their own data controller, but acts as a "data processor" on your behalf. Then, you're not "sharing" visitor's personal data with the embed provider, which greatly simplifies the question of legal basis. But this requires signing a Data Processing Agreement with the processor, and many services don't want to do this, or only offer it as an enterprise-level feature on their premium plans.
Unfortunately, it seems that Vimeo does not offer a data processing agreement that covers the embed player: https://help.vimeo.com/hc/en-us/articles/18332128580241-Does-Vimeo-offer-a-Data-Processing-Agreement
But it could be worth contacting their sales/support in case that FAQ isn't up to date.
It's not a WP issue. This is from Vimeo:
If you’re seeing this error in the player, the video you are watching has domain-level privacy enabled. Learn more at 'Set your video's viewing privacy before uploading'. The video’s owner can adjust the domains where a video can appear within the “Where can this video be embedded?” section of the embed settings page.
If the domain is listed in your video settings page, but the error is still appearing, the domain specified in your address bar may be different from the domain sent to the Vimeo player. In these cases, a privacy error may appear. Contact a web developer to confirm if there is anything in your site's HTML code that could be blocking the referrer from reaching our player iframe.
this is the answer
I have a client who wants a video to play on the website, no auto play, what is the best way to implement this? I read about avoiding iframes, is the <video> element the best route? Or is there something new and fancy I'm not aware of yet?
I found the video tag can be wonky, I usually like to Vimeo if the client has an account. It’s the most professional looking and gives you some decent customization options.
Do not auto play unless you want to piss off users.
is vimeo an iframe too?
I believe in most cases it is, but the engineers over at YouTube and Vimeo are good so you won’t run into a lot of issues using them. I agree that Iframes generally suck to work with, but when they are part of an embed script from a major provider they usually aren’t as much of a hassle.
Vimeo. Auto play isnt supported by browsers anyway unless you mute the video.
Youtube iframe is rubbish but free and will make the page heavy and increase loading time.
You can get around the loading time by lazy loading the iframe
Depends on which web builder your using and how you want the video to displayed. Every web builder and custom coded sites allow for embedding a video. This shouldn't effect site speed (Unless you're using YT).
YouTube will show suggested videos to the user and there's no way of removing the YouTube logo from the video player. Vimeo allows you to remove their logo but it's fairly pricey.
Zeacon has been our dev shops go to - our clients love it cause it's fast, white labeled, and increases website visitors + conversions.
<video> is for self hosted video files, <iframe> would be to embed from somewhere else (youtube, vimeo). For most purposes i would go with self hosted.
I like <video>(self hosted). It gives more control.
is it faster load time to do the <video> option?
That depends on the server.
What's the difference between Iframe elements and Video elements?
**SOLVED**
In the past, I've been able to embed my Vimeo videos on Google Sites (using sites/new), but now it seems to make it into a Link Card instead of actually allowing it to embed the player. Anyone have a fix for this?
I know that Sites blocks the fullscreen player option, but I at least need the embedded player! For various reasons, no, I cannot use YouTube or Drive to host the content for this project.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: SOLVED because I was being an idiot.
I've just done a quick test with a Vimeo URL and it was going to embed without any issue - what was the Vimeo URL you were trying to embed?
And of course, now it works just fine...
I was clearly doing something stupid. Gonna blame it on having a newborn at home and going on 2 months with no more than an hour or two of sleep here and there.
Thank you for your help!
My link from Vimeo is now gone from FilmFreeway and the there is not option to add embedding or links, the only option I now have is to upload direct to FF. Anyone else?
My link stopped working because I disabled embedding on Vimeo when I checked to make sure downloading the video was disabled. I re-enabled embedding everywhere on Vimeo and the link was restored. It may have been disabled for three days, not good!
Thanks so much! Double checked it. Thankfully it's not Vimeo. I guess FilmFreeway is having an issue
Yes, this. You scared me haha
Enable downloads but password protect.
Mine seems to be working. If you don't mind me asking, why did you disable downloading? Programmers prefer to be able to download the film.
that's why i didn't have any view for 2 weeks......that's so bad
Mine is working just fine.
I have some Vimeo videos I want to embed using Kadence Blocks Pro and I was wondering using the Vimeo API if I could do something with Kadence to show all of the videos?
Or is there a dedicated plugin? I saw one but I need complete control of the CSS to showcase it, though...
There is a nice plugin called Vimeography.
Looks nice. Do you think I could use the pro version of that plugin to create something like this? Where the thumbnail is the embed video from the profile? I'm really just wondering about the CSS abilities of the plugin and how flexible it is.
You can use the Kadence Advanced Gallery Block with Vimeo embeds, but if you want full control, the Vimeo API is your best bet. You can pull videos dynamically and style them however you want with custom CSS inside Kadence.
You are amazing!! Thank you so much. I will definitely try the custom CSS. Still learning Kadence haha.
What block would you use to use with the API?
