Understanding the Cause of Broken Links
Broken links in Excel can occur for various reasons, such as moving files or changing file paths. One common issue is that hyperlinks may break if the linked files are moved to a different location or if the workbook itself is moved [1:2]. Additionally, network settings might prevent access to certain files, causing broken links
[1:3]. It's important to ensure that all linked files are stored in the same location and accessible from the workbook's current path.
Using Absolute vs. Relative Paths
Excel often defaults to using relative paths for hyperlinks, which can lead to issues when files are moved or shared across different systems. This setting can be altered by disabling "Update links on save" to prevent automatic changes to relative paths [2:3]. However, this solution might not resolve the issue for everyone, as seen in some cases where links remain broken despite these adjustments
[2:5].
Repairing Hyperlinks
To repair broken hyperlinks, you can manually edit each hyperlink by updating the address through the "Edit Hyperlink" option [1]. Alternatively, using the
HYPERLINK()
function in Excel can provide more stability, as it allows you to define the link directly within a cell formula [5:1]. This method can be particularly useful for maintaining links over time, especially when dealing with frequent updates or changes.
Checking Other Factors
If links remain stubbornly broken, consider checking conditional formatting rules, named ranges, and data verification settings, as these can sometimes interfere with hyperlinks [4:1]
[4:2]
[4:3]. Ensuring that your workbook is saved in the correct format (.xlsx or .xlsm) can also help prevent hyperlink issues
[5:1].
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
In addition to the advice from discussions, regularly backing up your workbook and maintaining a consistent file structure can help prevent future issues with broken links. If sharing workbooks frequently, consider creating a centralized folder for all related documents to minimize path discrepancies. For large projects, documenting the intended paths and any changes made can assist in troubleshooting when links break unexpectedly.
Hello,
I've been working an a workbook that contains hyperlinks to SDS sheets found on a local drive. What people see is a hyperlink labeled "SDS" next to a chemical name.
Today, I found when clicking on a link, the message "Cannot open the specified file."
So I remade that hyperlink by getting the address from the folder that the document is in and editing the address with the edit hyperlink window.
Then I found that every single hyper link in the excel workbook has this problem.
What I identified is that in broken hyperlinks, the starting portion of the address was somehow replaced with the following.
"......"
On a working link that part of the address looks more like this.
"\server1\Public\Departments"
Additionally, I found that all blank spaces in between words of the document name were replaced with the following.
"%20"
So when my link addresses have the full address and regular spaces, the are clickable and open up a window displaying SDS information from the file that they point to.
How can I restore the functionality of my links? I wanted to use the replace function, because that could change all of them (hundreds) at the same time, but I found that the replace function does not see address information stored to a hyperlink.
Please advise me of the fasts way that I can convert my links to the formatting that I found to work and thank you very much. I'm using Excel 2010.
Update:
I opened up a version of the excel sheet found on another drive and found that those links are working in that workbook.
What is interesting is that the links within the workbook that do open up a stored PDF seem to be identical to the links within the workbook that only open the "cannot open the specified file" message.
I now have absolutely no idea why the links are broken... Will set this post to solved when someone tells me why this discrepancy between workbooks despite same addresses happens.

I find that the original relationship bt the Excel book and the linked files will not survive if either component is budged around. Try to keep all project files together in the same project folder on the same drive to minimize this. I don't have a bulletproof explanation for why Excel isn't smarter on this front.
If only one can access it, I'd imagine it has to do with where the workbook is stored. Something from one file is blocked from reaching the other file because of something on the network telling it not to. Without access to the files or network, it's hard to say.
Hi all,
I have an excel document that contains hyperlinks to other excel sheets. When I share the document with my boss and she opens it using MS Edge she can open the hyperlinks, however, when she downloads the document the hyperlinks no longer work. How do we fix this? Appreciate any help.
Are the other sheets in the same workbook?
No, they aren't. Just linked. I have shared each of the files with my manager before. Do they all need to be in the same workbook in order to open properly? Thanks!
She would have to have the linked sheets in the same location for them to work correctly. Also, Excel hyperlinks don't automatically change if a workbook is modified, i.e. rows added, cells moved, etc.
Just to chime in- Nobody wants all the links in a spreadsheet to be changed to relative paths. Fuck whoever made this up and enabled it by default. Fuck them. Who the fuck thought anybody would want this?
This option, buried deep in your settings: "Update links on save" <-- Even if it worked, it would be only for me, not every other sucker who opens the spreadsheet and automagically has their links fucked up when they save the spreadsheet.

Did I say fuck enough? No?
Fuck this 'feature'.
Edit: Fix grammar and to add one more 'fuck'.
Note, we have tried using the "update links on save" option but still no luck.

I have a worksheet with hyperlinks to create emails and go to documents on a network server. We have an original worksheet that gets copied into all projects, but when it is copied in all of the links to documents break and cannot open the docs. the email links still work. Is there a way to fix this so that the links do not break?

thanks!

I have an external link in my Excel workbook that I'd like to remove, but it's being stubborn.

I go to Data > Edit Links > *Select the link* > Break Link > *Pop-up Window* > Break Link

Nothing happens. No error and link still exists.
Try checking if any of your named ranges is referring to what you want to break from.
No luck on that - nothing in my Name Range
Check any conditional formatting rules and data in charts if you copied anything over from another spreadsheet.
Also check data verification rules.
I've had a spreadsheet for many years. I update data weekly based on source links just a few rows below that row of the most current week. But for the second week in a row, the links no longer work. The text is displayed, but they are no longer formatted as hyperlinks. Just text, it seems.
I just corrected them last week and made them hyperlinks again. Why might these hyperlinks be disappearing?
Thank you.
Bottom line up front:
This is the most poorly-written request for help I've read in a long time, to the point it almost seems deliberate.
I update data weekly based on source links...
🤦
"Delinking" in the title and this reference to "source links" made it sound like you're referring to actual data links.
Links and hyperlinks are not the same thing. I'm unclear why you would use two different words interchangeably to refer to the same thing, when you clearly know what a hyperlink is.
Hyperlinks don't "delink" - and the "spreadsheet" isn't "linked" by putting a hyperlink in a cell.
This isn't meant to be offensive, but it genuinely seems you're trying to make up technical jargon to sound like you know more than you do.
...just a few rows below that row of the most current week.
"That" row? Which row? You didn't refer to a row. Does it even matter?
The layout doesn't even seem relevant to your question so it's unnecessary in addition to being meaninglessly ambiguous.
But for the second week in a row, the links no longer work.
Are you talking about consecutive weeks or are you still vaguely referring to the layout that wasn't explained?
The text is displayed, but they are no longer formatted as hyperlinks. Just text, it seems.
Saying the "links no longer work" means they still exist but just aren't functioning. What you're saying now is that the hyperlinks are gone.
And "just text?" What text? The URL? - Some other text that was the hyperlink display text? A label that was on a row near the hyperlinks?
I just corrected them last week and made them hyperlinks again.
Based on context clues I'm assuming you right used the cell context menu to make the cells hyperlinks. It's still unclear whether the "text" is the URL or something else.
Back to the beginning:
I've had a spreadsheet for many years.
The last time I saw a post that said this, the OP was a Mac user who literally never closed their applications or saved their files, and blamed Excel for "reverting" months of work on their spreadsheet.
OK, thanks, but why?? my hyperlinks have worked for five, some 10 years. Why have they suddenly stopped working now?
Are you OP? Why reply with a different account?
And how exactly could you expect anyone to answer to that question with so little relevant information - and so many contradictions - in the given explanation?
I'm not sure what your issue may be.
You can try using the =HYPERLINK function.
u/despapitfast - i’m so terribly sorry to have upset you. Please tell me what I can do to make it all better.
Nothing I said indicated being upset.
You, however, not only posted a snarky reply to my comment, but also tagged me in a separate top level comment here, just to be derisive.
The post was so poorly written it amounts to self-sabotage because it precludes anyone from being able to help you.
Rather than merely insult you or ignore it, I gave relevant feedback to point out exactly what the issues are, because a post like that makes it seem like nobody has ever tried to help you improve your communication skills before.
Then again, considering your responses, it's also likely that you simply reject all criticisms and carry on being ignorant - and are blaming Excel for something you did without realizing it.

I guess I'll try Quora.
The constant pop-up reminders of broken links are very annoying. I've tried experimenting on copies of the document, removing everything but a newly made empty sheet, so I'm sure it's nothing but the broken name links.
This is what it looks like: https://i.imgur.com/1u9wVcf.png
The removal button is grayed out, and I can't find any way to delete them. I'm using the 365 version. I'm grateful for any advice.
you find a fix yet?
This was very long ago. I've totally forgotten by now. Don't know if I ever solved it. Maybe I did. Or maybe I remade the document.
Sorry.
All good. I’m tempted to do the same

Hello,
I have a small problem with an Excel file and I need your help, please.
I have the following message: “Sorry...”. We've found a problem in the content of “#File name#”, but we can try to recover as much of the content as possible. If the source of this workbook is reliable, please click yes.”
The problem is that once I put yes, I get another message to tell me that the file is corrupt.
The problem is that it doesn't do this to all users of the file (File on my file server). Out of five people who use it, only two have this problem, the other three have no problem at all.
Have you ever had this? I need your help please :)
I'd check to see what differences there are between the users - different Excel version, operating system version/updates, and/or different add-ins.
Repairing the Office installations of the problematic users might be worth a try.
Is there a previous version that works for everyone? If so, then what changed?
But, ultimately, I wouldn't trust the workbook any more. Probably best to rebuild from a clean base. Perhaps an opportunity to make improvements. Hopefully it isn't too big a job.
Hi, there,
So they all have the same version.
I'll try to do an Office repair on the PCs of the problematic users and if it persists I'll tell them to redo the file cleanly.
And no previous version that works for everyone :/
Thanks for your help :)
Some may be on a different network drive which can mean a person nearby can be working without a problem and yours can't be logged into. Are all things equal. Also, check that your versions are of the same yymm.

I am getting an "UNABLE TO REFRESH" error from my workbook links and a "Server Error" when I open them. I have broken the links, I've saved as a v1.1 and uploaded back into OneDrive but cannot fix it.
I have Office 2021 and am using this through OneDrive Online as well.
EDIT: Fixed office year bc I'm stupid.

Office 2001??
Office Professional Plus 2001
I have done my head in trying to figure out why my workbook links just stopped working a couple days ago. They were working before and nothing had changed.
2001???
Hi all,
I have about 8k rows of dropbox image links and want to find if any of them result in download errors, or if they are bad links.
I tried running the following formula;
The dropbox links are in column A;
=ARRAYFORMULA(IFERROR(IMAGE(A2:A)), in column B
and
=ARRAYFORMULA(IF(ISBLANK(B2:B),"LINK ERROR",)) in column C
I also tried to do a conditional formatting in Column B for "turn red if cell in column B is empty" , but it shows as if all the cells are full even though some images arent loading and DO result in errors.

What's a good way to test for broken links?
This is something I've used in the past. If the link is good, it'll return 200.
function getStatusCode(url){
var response = UrlFetchApp.fetch(url);
return response.getResponseCode();
}
You may have to give it access -- but I'm not sure. Use =IFERROR(IF(ISBLANK(A1),,getStatusCode(A1)))
and drag fill it down. If you have thousands, maybe to 100 at a time -- then 200 at a time.
Then to do some conditional formatting...
Highlight error'd ones
=AND(LEN($A1),NOT(LEN($B1)))
Highlight good ones
=AND(LEN($A1),LEN($B1))
If you're using Linux or MacOS or even WSL, check this script
Good URLs with this will return 301 and bad ones, 000.
There are several posts about the new "Workbook Links" sidebar function that has replaced the "Edit Links" popup function on the Ribbon. I've seen that the "Edit Links" is still available and you just have to add it back in as a custom group on the Ribbon. I've seen that most folks hate the "Workbook Links" function.
I see value in both, and would like easy access to both.
Mine is acting odd. A year or so ago, very briefly, the "Workbook Links" showed on the Ribbon, but then it reverted.
Now, when I open a workbook, SOMETIMES Excel give me an alert across the top saying it was unable to refresh from a Linked Workbook, and if I click the Manage Workbook Links button that is in that alert, it takes me to the "Workbook Links" sidebar. But, the option in my Ribbon is "Edit Links". See photo.
This is the only time I can figure out how to get to "Workbook Links". If I dismiss that alert, or if I go to "Workbook Links" and then close it, I don't know how to get back to it. I've tried to search available functions in the Ribbon editor, and I can't find it.
So, I'm opposite of others - I know how to access "Edit Links". But, how can I get access to the "Workbook Links" function after I dismiss this alert?
I strongly suggest you to use Help, Feedback, Report a problem. They do listen to these.
I guess I'm not completely sure there is a problem to report. I was looking for insights if others experienced the same thing, and if so, how they were able to access the "Workbook Links" sidebar on demand.
Well, there is, Because you are supposed to see that "Workbook links" button on your ribbon, not the Edit links one. If you go to File, Account, About Excel button, what is the version string at the top (you can right-click it to copy)? Mine is Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2506 Build 16.0.18925.20076) 64-bit
