TL;DR Start with a soot sponge before using any liquid cleaners. If necessary, follow up with TSP or rubbing alcohol for stubborn stains. Repainting may be required if the soot cannot be fully removed.
Soot Sponge
The first step in removing candle soot from walls is to use a soot sponge. This specialized sponge is designed to lift soot without smearing it further, and should be used before applying any liquid cleaning solutions [1:1],
[1:6]. Using liquid cleaners first can render the soot sponge ineffective.
Cleaning Solutions
After using a soot sponge, you can try cleaning the walls with diluted dish soap or rubbing alcohol on a paper towel [1:1],
[3:1]. TSP (trisodium phosphate) is another recommended cleaner that effectively removes soot, tar, and grease
[4:1], but it is harsh and requires careful handling according to instructions
[1:1].
Magic Erasers and Paint Considerations
Magic erasers are often suggested for cleaning soot, but they can be abrasive and may strip paint, especially if used on cheap or matte finishes [5:1],
[5:2]. If the paint is damaged, repainting might be necessary
[5:4]. It's important to test cleaning methods in an inconspicuous area first to avoid widespread damage
[3:4].
Repainting
If cleaning does not completely remove the soot or if the paint has been damaged, repainting may be the best solution. Use a stain-blocking primer before applying a new coat of paint [5:6]. Some users have found success by matching the existing paint color closely and repainting only the affected areas
[3:2].
Preventive Measures
To prevent soot buildup in the future, ensure candles are burned properly by trimming wicks to 1/4 inch before each burn and avoiding burning for extended periods [2:3],
[4:4]. Consider using natural wax candles like beeswax, which produce less soot than paraffin candles
[2:1].
PSA for those who like candles and are worried about this happening:
Yes to trimming off the globby wick before lighting! Huge improvement
I never heard of a wick dipper before. But now I’m getting one!
That’s awesome. I suggest cleaning with a product called TSP if you have time to get it from a home improvement store. If not, you should be OK with a gentle cleanser.
Do you know if this would be safe to use on blinds? there's also soots on the blinds (they're like a crepe/paper-like fabric) and I don't want to ruin them. picture of blinds
I wouldn’t use that on the blinds, the bleach would probably stain/ruin them. If its paper like there may not be much you can do, but if more on the fabric side you could try just the hot water and powdered tide combo without bleach?
You might be better off wiping with a mild detergent then repainting. Otherwise you'll be scrubbing for hours :/
Ahh this was my fear. I honestly don't know if I have time to repaint - I list my house tomorrow and have a huge day at work today but maybe I can find a TaskRabbit last minute to handle this. Thank you!
I'm a candle fanatic and well versed in cleaning soot. Some of these suggestions are really not good. Get a soot sponge and use it before anything else. If you use any kind of cleaning fluid first the soot sponge won't work. After that, it depends on the paint finish. I use rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and that works for me. TSP can also help but it's harsh, so make sure to follow the directions. A lot of the time you can't get every little trace off though and if that's the case you'll have to prime and repaint.
Soot sponge! have never heard of that - thank you!
Paint Contractor here: wash the walls, then paint. If you do not have time, I suggest hiring a painter to do this for you (you mentioned Task Rabbit). Please do not use a magic eraser - it will remove paint/sheen.
How much bleach and tide into water?
I recently noticed that burning candles has created soot stains on the walls of the apartment I rent. What are products or methods that have worked for you getting the soot off?
Woof, agreed. If there's crown molding, magic eraser. If your paint on your walls can handle it, magic eraser that too. Otherwise a multi surface cleaner should be able to handle it- I used microfiber clothes, but a regular washcloth would probably work too.
Ok I’m not trying to be a smart ass/rude. But I feel like if candles are burned properly (trimming wicks to 1/4 inch before each burn, not burning longer than 4 hours, etc) then there should not be soot on the walls. Or they can’t be very good candles because I’ve never had this happen. Am I the only one who feels it’s not normal to have soot everywhere? It’s a bit concerning to me, tbh.
Try a magic eraser
I wash mine with a sponge and dish soap.
Oh, that must have been paraffin candles :( soap and warm water will help. Otherwise, just re-decorate. It’s best to use natural wax, ideally, beeswax in the future. Just think about it, you breathe that soot while the candle burns. It’s not good for you.
doesn't look like you have a custom color there, why not just get the cheapest can of Kilz2, 2 $1 paintbrushes and the cheapest smallest can of the closest color match. Home Depot, Lowes, Menards are all pretty good at matching color. Take to them a piece of undamaged paint that is at least one inch square. You can probably buy such small quantities of paint that you could fix this without home remedies and old wives tales. Even if you spend $30 on the whole thing, I imagine that your own time has some value, and minimum wage where I live is $13 per hour. If you "waste" $39 dollars on it, or 3 hours of your time at virtual minimum wage, you still get the problem solved. Step1: Paint over whole area with kilz2. 2: wait. whole day is preferred. 3: paint finish coat on top of all of it. 4: admire your handiwork.
OH- 5: stop burning real flame candles in your living space. No good comes of it. We have evolved past candle tech. They soot up your walls, leave carcinogens in your breathing air, and burn your house down when you least expect it.
Soot eraser on Amazon
Why why why is vinegar always people's immediate knee-jerk response 😭
Painted walls can be very difficult to clean without damaging them and leaving lasting marks. The paint isn't made to be wipeable most of the time. Try buffing the edges out carefully with a magic eraser or a microfiber cloth. This is likely to leave duller, or shinier, marks though depending on the grit you use, so you'll just have to decide whether you'd like the stain or the shine difference spots in the paint. Maybe try in an area that's not visible.
you could try veeeery lightly sanding it with soft sandpaper. that’s what saved me the other day when everyone told me my floor had to be replaced.
Diluted dawn dish detergent and a magic eraser. I agree with buffing the edges first. It is basically a grease stain from the paraffin and I hate to say this but you may need to repaint the wall.
Wait what? Candles can do that?
It’s when there’s too much of a flame I think. Yankee candles seem to be the worst for it! I don’t have this issue with any other brand of candle. But to be honest, I think I should have cut the wick down more before relighting the candle.
I had this issue multiple times with the bath and body works candles
oh yes. rip my walls. you can prevent it by trimming the wick occasionally (especially if you see it’s got like huge charcoal chunks on it) and not letting it burn too long.
You could try using oil, but I can’t guarantee it will work and you would have to clean it with soap afterwards.
latex sponge. Sometimes they are referred to as soot sponge
TSP gets soot, tar, and grease off easily. I used to own a house that had previously belonged to smokers and you wouldn’t believe what came off the walls when I washed them with TSP.
Seconded. TSP before painting.
LA’s Totally Awesome
Tried to use a magic eraser on the soot marks from a candle. Looks like it spread the soot everywhere. Tried using a wet soapy washcloth, didn’t do much. Landlord coming tomorrow morning. Anything I can do fast?
It doesn’t look like soot to me. You mentioned using a magic eraser. It probably stripped some of the paint layer off making it look smudged.
It's this. OP wore off the top layer of paint and the underlying paint layer is showing. Magic erasers are abrasive. think very very fine sandpaper.
I know it's this because my SO did this to our paint for exactly the same reason and has the exact same outcome.
Repainting is needed. What stopped it from happening with us again was making sure we move the candles around instead of them always being in one spot and using more expensive candles that burn cleaner.
That or they used cheap paint to begin with, some paint cannot be washed and will leave marks if it gets wet. I did the same thing in my old apartment
I've had the same problem. It depends on the paint. If it's cheap matt paint then there's no chance of getting it off.
I tried multiple times, with a magic eraser, damp cloth, paper towels, you name it. It just spread around more.
I had to repaint it in the end using better paint.
you now have covid and must postpone.
clean the wall thoroughly. apply oil based primer followed by as close of a match as possible in paint- see if you can get a sample because that will more than cover it
It will need to be primed with a stain blocking primer and repainted.
Someone else mentioned a plant, it’s a good idea- it would look like a shadow (or put something similar - vase, statue).
Please note that landlords usually expect to paint between tenants (but I understand why you don’t want it to show).
Big ol ficus and it's magically gone
The Magic Eraser seems to have stripped your paint off the wall.
Diluted vinegar can help neutralize odor and residue. But you need a light hand.
Have you tried Dawn and a microfiber?
Paint is your BFF.
You got this.
Magic Erasers are nothing but fine sandpaper. I can't figure out why people think that they are the solution to just about everything. They simply sand down surfaces and stains along with them. I've actually seen far more damage than good from them.
The magic erasers here have to be wet so when you wash the wall, it wets the paint to smear and cover the marks. Too much just removes the paint.
My old roommate had a cat who sneezed snot on all the walls and windows. Magic erasers are the only thing that got it off the walls. Well, the off brand ones that come in a 100 pack. Haha.
So my candle was lit, and has left this mark on the wall. We have cleaners who are coming to clean our uni house this week, with a wall clean included. This involves a water solution which they mentioned. Does anyone think I should attempt to clean this or wait until the cleaners as i’m sure they know best! I unfortunately cannot paint the walls as it is a student house, and the move out date is Friday.
If you’re worried you’ll get in trouble for it, I’d try scrubbing the wall with a damp cloth to see if you can get the mark off yourself
i did already try that but i wasn’t sure to see it the cleaner could get it off.
Just leave it for the cleaners if you won't get in trouble for it
thing is the landlord wants it obviously in a very clean condition as we’re moving out, i’m just unsure if it will come out
leave it but also read the directions on candles. they need at least a foot away from walls when burning. learned the hard way with BBW 3 wicks.
really want to avoid losing deposit as we’ve spent so much on this house!
Depending on the finish of your walls I’d proceed cleaning with caution. If your walls are a flat finish then cleaning with water may leave marks behind if you happen to get out the discoloration. In my experience I have found that if you can find a white pencil eraser to gently erase the marks then that could help from causing further damage to your wall. My go to is typically a little dawn on a damp cloth and gently wiping the area. In some cases a lightly dampened magic eraser has been helpful but depending on the finish of your wall it could lead to further damage to the finish.
sorry what did you mean by a flat finish?
A flat finish looks more matte like, where as a semi gloss or glossy finish looks to have a bit of shine to it.
Never experienced this before but I noticed this new candle I bought was blowing black smoke frequently and didn’t think much of it (great to know I’ve been inhaling fumes for the past few days).
Now I realise black smoke residue all over walls and I google and believe it’s called “soot”.
Now trying to clean it all and looking into a professional.
I realise my TV isn’t turning on now also so I guess it’s got in there? As well as the air conditioner.
Anyone have advice to fix this mess?
Not really answering your question, but this is one reason I do not burn candles in our house.
What a bloody nightmare this candle has caused! It’s everywhere 😅
If it makes you feel any better the exact same thing has happened to me. Obliviously burning a candle each night for a couple of years. Started to see some weird dark spots on the nearest wall where nails would be sitting behind the plasterboard. Odd I thought. Then I realised what was going on. I had no idea it was even possible to damage a wall with a candle. It's not exactly something they teach you at School. I was trimming the wick too but not enough it seems.
You must be British. I just love "bloody nightmare". You guys have the coolest way of expressing yourselves.
What candle did you light?!! That thing really did a number on your house
I know! I posted it elsewhere on a local Facebook page to see if anyone could help and everyone was saying it’s just accumulation of dirt and I haven’t cleaned 😂😂
I have no idea what candle but it wasn’t too expensive and big. Huge fire on it and lots of black smoke. I just assumed if I buy a candle and light it then I’m good right? Guess not.
The last few days I’m not kidding I walked around noticing how Smokey it looked and I just didn’t think much of it. Foolish! Live and learn….
Dawn disk soap diluted. Use a candle warmer going forward. At the very least, only burn for 4 hours and trim the wicks down before each use.
use a soot sponge. It is a latex sponge and you use it DRY. Do not try to clean this with anything wet, it will create more of a mess that will be harder to remove.
Unfortunately I might be too late I’ve already tried to clean it and some scrubbed off and then some just seem to stick more onto it so maybe I’m screwed there
About to go to the supermarket, so I will look out for the suit sponge
They are not sold in supermarkets. Try Amazon. SOOT sponge
Don't use anything wet, it will make more of a mess. Vacuum it all to begun with, use a dry paper towel to 'aggravate' it and use a microfiber cloth on the remaining. You may need a pack of microfiber cloths (can get a pack for £1 in most discount places').
Soot stain from a yankee candle, it’s stained a white window ceil, I need advice on how to get it out!! I rent this place and really don’t want to have to pay big bucks for repairing it, can anyone offer advice? I’ve already scrubbed on it with soap and water, bleach, and scrubbing bubbles grit and grime solution.... nothings worked thus far. Advice?
Try washing with a TSP solution (Tri Sodium Phosphate) ... real TSP, not the phosphate free stuff.
Thank you! I will try this
They make a special sponge for removing soot. Tsp may discolor walls.
Good morning , My wife pointed to something that looks like black dust and said that this is result of candles burning. Does anyone know a good way to clean it? I tried some cleaning sprays and they just smudge it. Is it positive from candles? Thanks!
I think we're in the same dog house. I just changed my air filters after a few months of major indulgence with my new candle hobby and the soot shocked me. Had to admit that the black dust my wife was noticing up on the walls was probably my doing.
Yep, that’s soot. Switching to a warmer might make the wife happy. Candles have historically and continue to be a filthy business
100% No matter how many times I hear certain companies try to spin them as “clean“ I think only a small majority is actually clean if so. I always think of the chemicals we are breathing in… I can’t get myself to stop tho 🫣
I just mopped my walls today haha 🤣 get you a good spin mop and add a little Dr bronners Sals Suds to some hot hot water. It will come right off.
Get ready for a shock when you change your AC filter! 🖤😆
I had an unfortunate incident last Christmas where I forgot had a 3-wick burning while taking down the tree…I don’t know if my husband will ever forgive me. Filter was solid black.
Yep. This is how mine looks. Scary!😱
It’ll just wipe off with some cleaner. This is 100% from candles
We are getting ready to put our house on the market. I moved our sofa so I could vacuum and discovered a dark space on the wall that basically was the size of the back of the sofa. We don’t smoke, but do burn candles occasionally.
We sure don’t want to paint the whole room. How do we get this dark stuff off the wall??
Use a fresh swifter or flat mop and literally mop the wall. Warning you might still need to repaint too.
Anything special I should clean it with?
A lot of people will say magic erasers but in my experience they’re terrible with grease or oils. It wrecks the sponge and leaves particles everywhere!
I personally think it’s a buildup of grease and dust so I’d use dish soap or a degreaser and warm water. Hot water might peel the paint. The process could peel the paint too so be prepared. Any home store or even Walmart can match paint so you’re good.
