TL;DR
Cooling Devices and Airflow
Air conditioning is a popular solution for cooling down your sleeping environment. Running an AC unit before bedtime can help lower the room temperature [1:1]. If AC isn't available, using fans to circulate air can be effective. Positioning a fan to blow directly on you or using multiple fans can enhance airflow and help keep you cool
[2:2]
[3:4]. For those concerned about insects, mosquito nets designed for car windows can be adapted for home use
[2:6].
Cooling Bedding and Materials
Choosing the right bedding can make a significant difference. Cotton sheets are recommended due to their breathability and moisture-wicking properties [3:2]. Cooling mattress pads, such as Chilisleep or Bed Jet, use water circulation to maintain a consistent temperature, which can be particularly beneficial for hot sleepers
[3:3]. Avoid high-density foam pillows and mattresses, as they tend to retain heat
[4:1].
DIY Cooling Techniques
Several DIY methods can help cool you down while sleeping. Wetting your hair before bed allows it to cool as the moisture evaporates [3:1], though be cautious of potential dandruff
[5:8]. Using a damp cloth on your head or neck with a fan blowing over it can provide relief
[3:2]. Freezing a hot water bottle and placing it between your thighs can effectively cool your body by targeting major blood vessels
[5:2].
Environmental Adjustments
Keeping the heat out during the day is crucial. Closing windows and blinds when it's hotter outside can prevent warm air from entering [4:2]. In some climates, DIY swamp coolers that pass air over ice can be a cost-effective way to cool a room
[4:3]. Additionally, sleeping on the floor, especially if you have ceramic tile flooring, can feel cooler than a bed
[5:5].
Additional Tips
Consider wetting a sheet and lying under it with a fan on low; this can quickly cool you down, although it may not last all night [4:1]. Another suggestion is to wait until later at night when temperatures drop before going to sleep
[2:1]. Lastly, avoid opening windows during the hottest part of the day unless the outside temperature is significantly cooler
[4:4].
I get really hot during the night and no matter what mattress or sheets I seem to use I always am hot. I have to constantly switch over to the “unused” side of the pillow or the bed every so often until i eventually fall asleep.
I am desperate for any advice on how to cool down for my sleep so I can be nice and cooooool and icy and finally have a comfortable sleep
Second that
Try aircond room one hour before sleep, it may help. Or water bathroom a part area bathroom to let water cool down bathroom.
How do you all combat the weather while sleeping, I’m talking hot summers and cold winter nights. I feel the winter is easier to sleep in because you can GET warmer, but in those humid nights it’d be kind of hard to stay cool..how do you all sleep through the weather?
Air flow is the most important thing I think. Crack the windows a little, use a portable battery powered fan. When I spent a night in my car in hot and humid weather I had a camping fan hung from the driver seat head rest pointed straight at my face. It was about six inches above my head and it worked great. If I ever do it again I'm buying some more and pointing them at the rest of my body.
To add on, rain guards for the windows are useful when I’m in the same predicament as they allow you to crack open the windows without making it obvious to bystanders.
go UP, to higher altitude. Don't go east / west / north / south, go UP. Asheville NC works for me.
wait until 2 AM before you go to sleep, if you have to, on a particularly crappy hot night. I can handle some things, but my furry dog can't. We just have to wait until things finally cool down.
roll all your windows down. No I do not believe in stealth, at all. I believe in picking places to sleep where people don't care, and that are safe. When you meet those conditions, you can certainly roll your windows down all night.
But with your windows down, how do you deal with mosquitos? That’s been my problem where I am.
In my case, most places I've been to in the USA, that's simply not been a problem at all.
One time it was the most amazingly huge problem, which I discussed in another recent post. Long story short, I left!
When I was camping in National Forests, mosquitoes were a possibility, although it didn't always happen. I preferred repellents that didn't have DDT in them, since they are a neurotoxin.
I would suggest simply not parking where there are mosquitoes, to the extent it is possible for you to do so. You have wheels, I believe in using them.
You could try making screens for your windows or throwing a mosquito net over your whole car, if you really must live side by side with them.
Hi, sorry for a reply 20 days later. There are mosquito / bug nets (sold by various companies) which are made to slip over the frame of a car door. They stay in place even when the window is rolled down, so there can be airflow without insects entering.
They usually come in sets of two, and the price ranges for the sets seem to be anywhere between $11.00 and $20.00
If anyone decides to research them (whether to somehow get offline, or to find locations of stores which sell them), I recommend using the keywords / phrases "car window mosquito net" or "car window bug screen."
Drive to the ocean or up a mountain
Over the river & through the woods ;)
You do not want to go to my grandmother's house, believe me! ;)
The summer heat is a sensory nightmare every year especially at night. I get so sweaty!!!! What are your best sheets and cooling mat recommendations or any tips and tricks?? Help!! I am so tired of waking up sticky and sweaty. It makes me not want to go to bed but normally I love sleeping as it helps me reset.
Not sure about cooling mats, but you want to go with cotton sheets (as little polyester as you can afford).
If you sleep with a fan pointed at you I’ll sometimes use a damp cloth on my head/neck so the air cools it.
If it’s in your budget look into the chilisleep or bed jet mattress pads. They use water running through the pad to keep you at a constant, set temperature. Made a huge difference for my husband who sleeps horribly if too hot.
Sorry for the obvious answer, but since you didn’t mention whether you use one or not: a standing fan. I can’t survive summer without it. The white noise helps as well.
Use a fan
I find it helpful to wet my hair before bed, so it's cool as it evaporates. Baby powder helps my skin feel less sticky.
Summer in the UK is brutal right now. We don't have ac and the heat is killing me. Even with all the windows fully open and sleeping on top of the covers, I am still sweating and really struggling to sleep. Makes me dread going to bed every night. Any tips? I've heard about cooling blankets and pillows, not sure if these are effective?
Thanks.
First tip for hot weather is to keep the heat out. Sometimes (oftentimes) that means not opening windows at all. If your windows are shut, from wind and light, preferably from the outside, that won’t let in new hot air. Opening windows when it’s only a degree or two cooler outside (or hotter) is going to guarantee a bad time.
Doubling down on this, where I live when it gets over 80 we lock it down. Windows stay closed, blinds stay shut, ceiling fans stay on with low settings. I'm guessing you may not have ceiling fans, so invest in some standing fans/box fans/whatever you can find. We also shut one of the spare upstairs rooms, this makes sure we aren't cooling a room we aren't using.
Look up DIY swamp coolers. Basically ways to pass air over ice as it melts.
I've lived in warmer climates.
Expensive option 1 is a portable air con unit. Stick the hot air hose out the window and the unit will blow cool air in your bedroom.
Expensive option 2 is a bed jet or liquid cooled mattress topper. I've been using the hydrosnooze and it's bloody fantastic. Google will tell you more.
Cheap option is taking a simple sheet, wetting it the wringing it out. Lie under it with a fan on low and you'll get cool pretty quick. Might not last the night.
Make sure you're not using latex or high density foam pillows or mattress, traps the heat.
Don't use polyester sheets, cotton all the way.
Good luck
I noticed that. It explains why there are so many shitty ideas but there are a couple that actually do work.
Freezing a hot water bottle is my go to. If you put it between your thighs (where you have some major blood vessels) it really helps to cool you down. And it's much cheaper than a new mattress.
It says damp, not dripping wet, which yes a damp blanket will keep you cool when hot.
Then you never knew heat. Try sleeping at 36 celsius at 2 in the morning. You will quickly change your mind. Anything goes to ease that suffering.
The only downside is that it lasts only some minutes, 30 min at most. By then my towel was already dry.
Sleeping on the floor does work, specially when you have ceramic tile flooring, but... eeeeh it feels bad to sleep there for the entire summer. Source: been there, done that, it's annoying after a while
I never doubt that it works in cooling you down, it's just a terrible suggestion and solution to the problem
"Get less uncomfortable bedding, disregard your bed altogether” like someone put effort into this. What a waste of their time
#17 Wear sunglasses to bed
Did this the other night. It actually worked. Bedroom was hot as shit. Couch was hot as shit. Floor felt like it was 15-20 degrees cooler. Hot air rises
Do not go to bed with wet hair. This is how you get dandruff or stinky hair. Bacteria will be going nuts in a warm, wet place with oils.
Wet hair dampens the bed
103 Celsius in shade? You most be boiling, man!
It’s in the 90’s at night here in Texas. I ain’t opening my window to melt in the heat while also being assaulted by god knows what kind of pollen.
Did this in Africa. You just get hot and damp. Not cold. Wouldn’t recommend.
One of the most frustrating things for me is trying to get a good nights rest but having to constantly flip my blankets or lose clothing to cool off.
I found that sleeping with room temperature water bottles helps absorb body heat, making it easy to finally sleep. I usually just put one on the side or in between my legs and I’m all set. If you’re feeling really dangerous though you could try cold water bottles.
Figure this out when I lost power mid summer in TX heat, big life saver.
Ever thought of using a small fan? The air moving over you would help immensely plus the suttle Humm from the motor is also relaxing.
He is going for the frugal method lol. And actually i might have to try this, I sleep with a tower fan but it bothers my wife to the point she leaves the bed in the middle of the night and sleeps on the couch. She used to make me go to the couch but cant anymore because I have sleep apnea and a machine.
How did you found out it was sleep apnea
Typhoon hit our city 10 days ago and power hasn't been restored. I haven't slept properly since. I will try this tonight. Hope it works. I'm desperate.
Update: tried this last night. I put a 1.5L bottle of water by my legs and a 500ml of water near my torso/head. I woke up with cold feet but my upper body still felt warm. I will use 2 1.5L bottles tonight.
Thanks for this hack! You're a savior!
(And for the love of Jesus, I hope our power gets restored SOON!)
Take it to the next level; gel mats on your bed to absorb body heat.
Try sticking your feet out from under your blankets. Works a treat!
and leave my piggys compromised to toe goblins? no thanks
Everybody knows they won’t attack a single foot, they need two. And that one foot acts as an exhaust for all your body heat while drawing in the icy cold air from the toe goblin breath.
500 ml? 1L? 2L?
I consider it more of a taunt
Maybe look into cooling mats for pets? Sure they’re for pets, but humans can use them too. And they truly do work when hot since they absorb body heat.
Other than that, I know most won’t find it ideal, but my family will wet half a towel, wring them out so they aren’t dripping wet, and then just lay them over ourselves.
Alright my fellow women, I need help stating cool at night. I just moved back with my parents and they keep the house a little warmer than I'm used to and I like sleeping in the cold. What are some products or tips you girls suggest? And I'm open to anything-bed toppers, fans, personal ac units, etc. If it can help me stay cool, I want to hear about it!
Get cotton sheets maybe, cotton helps regulate the body temperature.
You can also place your sheets/pillowcases in the freezer for a couple hours to cool it and then sleep on
Open up the window (if you can) and get standing fan on on an oscillating mode to ventilate the room
Can you get a window a/c for your room? It would cost more in electricity, but you could close the door and be assured it would be cool. Sleeping in as little as possible helps, and not sleeping under any covers also helps. (Keep a robe on a hook inside your room for bathroom trips)
I have a crank window, so an ac unit wouldn't fit. But I've been sleeping with less blankets and clothes, and it helps a little.
A window fan might work for you if AC doesn’t. Window fans just go up against the screen. You can use them to suck in the cold air at night and push out the hot during the day (I often just use it at night and turn mine off for the day since I’m not in my room during the day.
Well, sorry about that!
I sleep with one of those squishy ice packs. Even when they aren’t straight from the freezer, they’re cool to the touch. I usually put one on my head or neck as I’m falling asleep to help me cool down. And if I wake up hot again in the middle of the night, the ice pack is still cool enough to cool me down!
In the same vein, I sleep with my nalgene full of ice. So good.
Me too, it's lovely behind the neck or sometimes I just plonk it on my head or cheek.
Oh, I like this! Definitely going to try this one.
Definitely recommend a Vornado fan or air circulator! They are extremely high power, last a long time, and have a five year warranty. I tend to be extremely hot and that fan works much better than any tower fan I’ve purchased. It’s amazing. The highest level shocked me when I unboxed it. It’s medium is probably most tower fans on high. I put it in my room and it cools the entire room down. Highly recommend!
My bf and I use an ac unit that goes on the floor or a table and has an outlet the attaches to the window so not much actually goes to the window, since you dont have much space in the window. Also any kind of fan would work.
What brand of ac unit do you have?
Does anyone have any advice for trying to sleep in hot weather? I have a fan on full blast and all the windows are open, I've tried washing my hair with cold water and that hasn't helped, I just can't get to sleep at all.
EDIT thanks everyone I managed to get some sleep using the advice given!
An empty soda bottle mostly filled with water (leave a little room for expansion) and then frozen during the day makes a good snuggle buddy at night. Wrap it in a thin towel or in your sheet. You might be able to put a small bottle under your neck. Keep a large bottle tucked in close to your chest. A 2L bottle can keep you cool all night.
I’ve dampened an entire bath towel and put it on me like a blanket. It actually got me chilly where I needed covers.
This was while sleeping naked of course.
The ancient Egyptians did this with sheets, but like you, I find a towel stays cool longer. Also wet socks; something about cool feet and ankles helps me, too.
I do the same.
Have you tried taking glycine? It a calming amino acid that also lowers your core body temperature.
Gunna try this
🥈
I used to sleep with a cold washcloth on my head like I had a fever, but nowadays I've got a small USB fan pointed at my torso when I sleep and it makes it feel much cooler.
Nice! Why dont you use the cold washcloth method anymore? Are you facing any problem with that?
No problems other than it falls off in the night because I roll a lot. I stopped using it because where I live it doesn't generally get hot enough that I need both, although if it does get really hot I will get myself a cold washcloth again.
My Mom grew up in the AZ desert in the 60s with no AC. They would hang damp sheets in front of the open windows.
Cold shower before bed, lower your body temp a bit. Make sure your sheets aren't flannel or something else designed to be warm. Sleep on the ground or in a lower part of the house where the cold will settle. Make sure you have good ventilation through the house so the room doesn't get stuffy or heat up more then the rest of the house from your body heat. You could also try a hammock, airflow underneath you will help a lot.
Cold showers make your body work to heat itself back up once you finish the shower, best to take hot shower. Think of how you feel when leaving a hot tub versus getting out of a very cold lake.
I second this. Hot showers are the way to go or a nice warm bath. Both good ways to decrease your body temperature.
thank you !!
Cold showers, definitely yes get as low as you can, least amount of fabric possible. Fan yes, a spray bottle maybe. A frozen towel around the shoulders is amazing, but then you get wet. Sleep in the bathtub even, but not with water in that case lol. Of course drink a lot of water.
living on the 5th floor in a building.. haha love the bathtub idea thanks !
Y'all don't have window air conditioning units?
Yah I'm on the 2nd floor so I feel your pain(3rd floor for folks in NA). The heat wave in Europe has been brutal, thankfully it's finally back to normal where I am.
But yah the bathtub won't be very comfy, but will probably be cooler.
I sleep in the basement as its normally the coolest part of the house in the summer. We don't have air conditioners here either. But I have a couch, tv, and computer down there so... Why not?
Sleep with a wet teatowel or face washer
Oh that sucks man.its probably hot as hell up there. My suggestion is this. Open all of your windows, and put a fan in each one, if you think its possible, keep your apartment door open for a time as well. Let it air out and you'll make a cross breeze.
Don't shut your windows at night if you do.
Ice packs. I have the bendy gel ones and I'll wrap them in a towel and put them on my stomach/back/head. Also if you freeze a bottle of water ( to slush consistency) and keep it in a cooler you'll have a nice cold drink in the middle of the night if you get thirsty. I wake up super warm and sweaty despite AC so this kinda helps me. Good luck! 3 hours of sleep is NOT fun, hope you can sleep better soon!
I sleep in the bare minimum, fan on high, one leg out like it’s a ritual. If you’re looking for modesty, come back in December.
The leg. Its always the leg that gets the body cool just enough for sleep. I mentally try to send all my heat to that leg, but it never works.
And then I wake up freezing. Every. Time.
Gotta have the "breathing foot" out.
My daughter bought a bed cooling system. It has small tubes throughout the topper that circulates cold water, by means of a control unit. They are pricey, but very effective.
yeah, I was hoping to hear more unconventional things like this, or some secret drugs.
https://sleep.me/ this is the one I use. Does a great job of keeping me cool
I use something similar called Bed Jet that blows air. You can set the temp on the remote or app. Does AC plus heat so even in the winter it's an amazing addition. Kinda pricy but worth it considering how much time we spend in our beds
I sleep while smoking a cigarette and wearing sunglasses. It’s very cool.
Dr. Cigarettes over here
Ceiling fan, stand fan, and a very lightweight blanket
Get nekkid.
