How to Stay Cool While Sleeping

TL;DR

  • Use fans or air conditioning
  • Opt for cooling bedding materials
  • Consider DIY cooling solutions like damp cloths or frozen water bottles

Cooling Devices and Airflow

Air conditioning is a popular solution for cooling down your sleeping environment. Running an AC unit before bedtime can help lower the room temperature [1:1]. If AC isn't available, using fans to circulate air can be effective. Positioning a fan to blow directly on you or using multiple fans can enhance airflow and help keep you cool [2:2][3:4]. For those concerned about insects, mosquito nets designed for car windows can be adapted for home use [2:6].

Cooling Bedding and Materials

Choosing the right bedding can make a significant difference. Cotton sheets are recommended due to their breathability and moisture-wicking properties [3:2]. Cooling mattress pads, such as Chilisleep or Bed Jet, use water circulation to maintain a consistent temperature, which can be particularly beneficial for hot sleepers [3:3]. Avoid high-density foam pillows and mattresses, as they tend to retain heat [4:1].

DIY Cooling Techniques

Several DIY methods can help cool you down while sleeping. Wetting your hair before bed allows it to cool as the moisture evaporates [3:1], though be cautious of potential dandruff [5:8]. Using a damp cloth on your head or neck with a fan blowing over it can provide relief [3:2]. Freezing a hot water bottle and placing it between your thighs can effectively cool your body by targeting major blood vessels [5:2].

Environmental Adjustments

Keeping the heat out during the day is crucial. Closing windows and blinds when it's hotter outside can prevent warm air from entering [4:2]. In some climates, DIY swamp coolers that pass air over ice can be a cost-effective way to cool a room [4:3]. Additionally, sleeping on the floor, especially if you have ceramic tile flooring, can feel cooler than a bed [5:5].

Additional Tips

Consider wetting a sheet and lying under it with a fan on low; this can quickly cool you down, although it may not last all night [4:1]. Another suggestion is to wait until later at night when temperatures drop before going to sleep [2:1]. Lastly, avoid opening windows during the hottest part of the day unless the outside temperature is significantly cooler [4:4].

ORIGINAL POST

I get really hot during the night and no matter what mattress or sheets I seem to use I always am hot. I have to constantly switch over to the “unused” side of the pillow or the bed every so often until i eventually fall asleep.

I am desperate for any advice on how to cool down for my sleep so I can be nice and cooooool and icy and finally have a comfortable sleep

How to stay cool during the night?

How do you all combat the weather while sleeping, I’m talking hot summers and cold winter nights. I feel the winter is easier to sleep in because you can GET warmer, but in those humid nights it’d be kind of hard to stay cool..how do you all sleep through the weather?

Air flow is the most important thing I think. Crack the windows a little, use a portable battery powered fan. When I spent a night in my car in hot and humid weather I had a camping fan hung from the driver seat head rest pointed straight at my face. It was about six inches above my head and it worked great. If I ever do it again I'm buying some more and pointing them at the rest of my body.

To add on, rain guards for the windows are useful when I’m in the same predicament as they allow you to crack open the windows without making it obvious to bystanders.

  1. go UP, to higher altitude. Don't go east / west / north / south, go UP. Asheville NC works for me.

  2. wait until 2 AM before you go to sleep, if you have to, on a particularly crappy hot night. I can handle some things, but my furry dog can't. We just have to wait until things finally cool down.

  3. roll all your windows down. No I do not believe in stealth, at all. I believe in picking places to sleep where people don't care, and that are safe. When you meet those conditions, you can certainly roll your windows down all night.

But with your windows down, how do you deal with mosquitos? That’s been my problem where I am.

In my case, most places I've been to in the USA, that's simply not been a problem at all.

One time it was the most amazingly huge problem, which I discussed in another recent post. Long story short, I left!

When I was camping in National Forests, mosquitoes were a possibility, although it didn't always happen. I preferred repellents that didn't have DDT in them, since they are a neurotoxin.

I would suggest simply not parking where there are mosquitoes, to the extent it is possible for you to do so. You have wheels, I believe in using them.

You could try making screens for your windows or throwing a mosquito net over your whole car, if you really must live side by side with them.

IamEOLS · 6 years ago

Hi, sorry for a reply 20 days later. There are mosquito / bug nets (sold by various companies) which are made to slip over the frame of a car door. They stay in place even when the window is rolled down, so there can be airflow without insects entering.

They usually come in sets of two, and the price ranges for the sets seem to be anywhere between $11.00 and $20.00

If anyone decides to research them (whether to somehow get offline, or to find locations of stores which sell them), I recommend using the keywords / phrases "car window mosquito net" or "car window bug screen."

The summer heat is a sensory nightmare every year especially at night. I get so sweaty!!!! What are your best sheets and cooling mat recommendations or any tips and tricks?? Help!! I am so tired of waking up sticky and sweaty. It makes me not want to go to bed but normally I love sleeping as it helps me reset.

Not sure about cooling mats, but you want to go with cotton sheets (as little polyester as you can afford).

If you sleep with a fan pointed at you I’ll sometimes use a damp cloth on my head/neck so the air cools it.

If it’s in your budget look into the chilisleep or bed jet mattress pads. They use water running through the pad to keep you at a constant, set temperature. Made a huge difference for my husband who sleeps horribly if too hot.

Tips to make my bed and room colder?

Posted by Ro1911j · in r/sleep · 3 months ago

Summer in the UK is brutal right now. We don't have ac and the heat is killing me. Even with all the windows fully open and sleeping on top of the covers, I am still sweating and really struggling to sleep. Makes me dread going to bed every night. Any tips? I've heard about cooling blankets and pillows, not sure if these are effective?

Thanks.

First tip for hot weather is to keep the heat out. Sometimes (oftentimes) that means not opening windows at all. If your windows are shut, from wind and light, preferably from the outside, that won’t let in new hot air. Opening windows when it’s only a degree or two cooler outside (or hotter) is going to guarantee a bad time.

lyssaly · 3 months ago

Doubling down on this, where I live when it gets over 80 we lock it down. Windows stay closed, blinds stay shut, ceiling fans stay on with low settings. I'm guessing you may not have ceiling fans, so invest in some standing fans/box fans/whatever you can find. We also shut one of the spare upstairs rooms, this makes sure we aren't cooling a room we aren't using.

Try this

2 upvotes on reddit
themflyingjaffacakes · 3 months ago

I've lived in warmer climates.

Expensive option 1 is a portable air con unit. Stick the hot air hose out the window and the unit will blow cool air in your bedroom.

Expensive option 2 is a bed jet or liquid cooled mattress topper. I've been using the hydrosnooze and it's bloody fantastic. Google will tell you more.

Cheap option is taking a simple sheet, wetting it the wringing it out. Lie under it with a fan on low and you'll get cool pretty quick. Might not last the night.

Make sure you're not using latex or high density foam pillows or mattress, traps the heat.

Don't use polyester sheets, cotton all the way.

Good luck

I noticed that. It explains why there are so many shitty ideas but there are a couple that actually do work.

Freezing a hot water bottle is my go to. If you put it between your thighs (where you have some major blood vessels) it really helps to cool you down. And it's much cheaper than a new mattress.

Then you never knew heat. Try sleeping at 36 celsius at 2 in the morning. You will quickly change your mind. Anything goes to ease that suffering.

The only downside is that it lasts only some minutes, 30 min at most. By then my towel was already dry.

Easy way to cool off when trying to sleep.

Posted by zughzz · in r/lifehacks · 3 years ago

One of the most frustrating things for me is trying to get a good nights rest but having to constantly flip my blankets or lose clothing to cool off.

I found that sleeping with room temperature water bottles helps absorb body heat, making it easy to finally sleep. I usually just put one on the side or in between my legs and I’m all set. If you’re feeling really dangerous though you could try cold water bottles.

Figure this out when I lost power mid summer in TX heat, big life saver.

Get cotton sheets maybe, cotton helps regulate the body temperature.

You can also place your sheets/pillowcases in the freezer for a couple hours to cool it and then sleep on

Open up the window (if you can) and get standing fan on on an oscillating mode to ventilate the room

Can you get a window a/c for your room? It would cost more in electricity, but you could close the door and be assured it would be cool. Sleeping in as little as possible helps, and not sleeping under any covers also helps. (Keep a robe on a hook inside your room for bathroom trips)

A window fan might work for you if AC doesn’t. Window fans just go up against the screen. You can use them to suck in the cold air at night and push out the hot during the day (I often just use it at night and turn mine off for the day since I’m not in my room during the day.

An empty soda bottle mostly filled with water (leave a little room for expansion) and then frozen during the day makes a good snuggle buddy at night. Wrap it in a thin towel or in your sheet. You might be able to put a small bottle under your neck. Keep a large bottle tucked in close to your chest. A 2L bottle can keep you cool all night.

Cold shower before bed, lower your body temp a bit. Make sure your sheets aren't flannel or something else designed to be warm. Sleep on the ground or in a lower part of the house where the cold will settle. Make sure you have good ventilation through the house so the room doesn't get stuffy or heat up more then the rest of the house from your body heat. You could also try a hammock, airflow underneath you will help a lot.

how to stay cool while sleeping

Here are some effective tips to stay cool while sleeping:

  1. Choose Breathable Bedding:

    • Opt for lightweight, breathable materials like cotton or linen for sheets and pillowcases. These fabrics allow for better airflow and moisture-wicking.
  2. Adjust Room Temperature:

    • Keep your bedroom cool, ideally between 60°F to 67°F (15°C to 19°C). Use a fan or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable temperature.
  3. Use a Cooling Mattress or Pillow:

    • Consider investing in a cooling gel mattress or cooling pillows that are designed to dissipate heat and keep you comfortable throughout the night.
  4. Limit Electronics:

    • Turn off electronics and devices that generate heat before bedtime. This includes TVs, computers, and even chargers.
  5. Stay Hydrated:

    • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, which can help regulate your body temperature.
  6. Take a Cool Shower:

    • A cool shower before bed can lower your body temperature and help you feel more comfortable as you fall asleep.
  7. Sleep in Lightweight Clothing:

    • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight pajamas made from breathable fabrics to help keep your body cool.
  8. Use Fans Strategically:

    • Position fans to create a cross-breeze in your room or use a box fan in the window to pull in cooler air from outside.

Recommendation: If you frequently struggle with heat while sleeping, consider a cooling mattress pad or a fan with a built-in air purifier. These can enhance airflow and help regulate temperature, making your sleep environment more comfortable.
