What Redditors are Saying

How to Stay Safe at a Crowded Festival

Attending a crowded festival can be an exhilarating experience, but it's important to prioritize safety. Here are some key tips gathered from various discussions:

Group Safety and Communication

Before heading to the festival, have a discussion with your group about safety plans. Decide who will stay sober and ensure that no one is left alone [1:1]. It's also beneficial for everyone to have fully charged phones and possibly carry power banks [1:1]. Knowing each other's health issues and how to handle them can be crucial in emergencies [2].

Hydration and Health Precautions

Staying hydrated is critical, especially if you're spending long hours in the sun. Start hydrating well before the festival and consider bringing electrolyte solutions like Propel or Gatorade packets [3:1][3:4]. Wear sunscreen and reapply it regularly to prevent sunburn [3:1]. Bring eye drops if you expect dusty conditions [2:5], and consider wearing a hat for additional sun protection [3:5].

Personal Safety and Belongings

Keep your valuables secure by using a front-facing fanny pack or a runner's belt [4:1][4:11]. Be aware of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas [4:12]. If camping, try to find friendly neighbors or groups to camp near for added security [4:9].

Navigating the Crowd

If you encounter someone causing trouble, move on and don't let it ruin your experience [2]. When participating in activities like moshing, be mindful of others and follow any established rules [3:3]. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, seek out festival staff or a nearby group for assistance [4:1].

Know Your Limits

Understand your limits when it comes to alcohol, fatigue, and other substances [5]. Pregame responsibly and avoid overconsumption during the day to maintain awareness and energy [5:1]. If you ever feel unwell or unsure, visit a medical tent and be honest about your situation [5].

By taking these precautions, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable festival experience.

ORIGINAL POST

I am 21, going to my first music festival and any advice you gorgeous women have on how to stay safe with large crowds, alcohol (I don’t drink but 18+ is legal where I live) and keeping my female friends & I safe would be highly appreciated!

FYI: COVID-19 is low right now in my country, but masks will be worn at all times (I can only hope stupid young men will follow our much needed guidelines but who knows...) and all the necessary sanitary items will be taken with us.

I haven’t been to a musical festival, but I have gone to other large events with friends.

Tip #1 is to have a serious discussion with everyone attending, before you arrive, of who will be looking out for whom and who will be staying sober. You don’t all have to stick together in a group of 8 (for example), but if you guys split up make sure no one is alone.

Make sure everyone comes with fully charged phones, optional battery/power bank packs (like Anker brand), charging coords. There should be more than 1 person with the supplies in case you guys get separated.

And I think a big one, have a meeting place. If you guys get separated pick a place and time you will all be coming together or a place you can go if anyone gets lost. Could be the entrance tent, could be the restroom, whatever is most visible and convenient.

In general, have water, tylenol, sunscreen, snacks, maybe a small first aid kit. Optionally a change of clothes. Take breaks, avoid heat stroke by staying hydrated. Watch your drinks. Protect your hearing! Don’t stand close to the speakers, you don’t want to end up with problems. Earplugs are even better.

Most of all, have fun! Trust your gut, if something feels off, don’t let peer pressure keep you in a bad situation. Safety first.

Festival Tips

Posted by StepAwayFromTheTea · in r/downloadfestival · 3 months ago

Seen lots of festival first timers asking Q's on here, so have put together a few tips that may get overlooked. Veterans please add your own tips in the comments!

  1. Don't be a dick.

  2. If someone else is being a dick, move on and don't let it spoil your experience. If required get a Bunnymans to calm down, but save your energy for the good stuff.

  3. Have your group learn each others health issues such as allergies, and how to treat things accordingly, e.g. calm panic or asthma attack/handle seizure/use epi-pen etc. Make sure epi-pens/inhaler etc brought at all times.

  4. If you or someone else is unwell after taking illegal drugs, get help immediately - you will not be in trouble. If they have some of whatever they took left, keep and give to medical staff to help with treatment identification. Narcan keeps getting mentioned by American Redditors - I don't think opiods (may be OOTL please correct me if so) are much of a problem with party drugs in the UK, but doesn't hurt to carry it.

  5. Keep hydrated - remember caffiene and alcohol dehydrate you. Dehydration is most of what a hangover is, but hydration is just as important when not drinking to avoid feeling like crap esp when dancing and when hot weather.

  6. Have fun, live in the present, and let go whilst capturing mental pictures and core memories - it all goes so fast and without being too dramatic festivals are one of life's highlights IMO, so you want to remember it.

  7. You won't really remember being [insert any uncomfortable issue e.g. tiredness here] once home and rested so ignore that as much as you can within reason, obvs don't fully neglect yourself.

  8. Take care of your feet as bad blisters are impossible to ignore. Youtube haplaband + benzoin tincure method if you struggle with blisters. Ffs don't wear new Docs.

  9. Set an emergency meeting place for both in the arena and at The Village (a.k.a. District X), then if split up and no phone signal etc. you can meet back up quickly rather than having to trek back to your tent and wait.

  10. Set up your phone's version of 'Find My Phone', memorise your login deets and have GPS turned on for it to work. Save a photo of yourself (and ideally the others you are at the festival with) as your lock screen then person who finds knows they're returning it to the right person.

  11. What 3 Words your tent, also take note of landmarks in case without use of phone. Flags/windsocks/lights tied to your camp are helpful.

  12. Bring a roll of bin bags and put rubbish directly into them, bring to bin once a day. Blows my mind how many people's camps give Crack Fox vibes when it takes so little effort. Also, use for clean clothes (sealed to protect from getting wet), and for dirty clothes to stop your tent getting as manky.

  13. Always have pocket tissues on your person. You do not want to end up wiping your arse with a sock. Personally I bring a bum bag with (may seem excessive but is still handsfree, improves my enjoyment of the festival, and saves money): • Reusable lightweight bottle (clipped to strap) • Pocket Tissues • Hand Sanitiser • SPF Lip Balm • Mini Suncream • Mini Wipes • Non-drowsy antihistamines • Paracetamol & ibuprofen • Heartburn tablets (Omeprazole is best) • Disposable poncho (only of no rain forecast, otherwise bring a light waterproof coat and tie to bumag/round waist as disposable ponchos enviromentally crappy and SWEATY) • Little torch rather than relying on phone torch in grim toilets - risk of dropping • Cheap sunglasses • Hair bobbles, clips, and pins • Bank/credit card(s) in secure inner pocket on own - can't accidentally knock it out when grabbing something else then • £20 in fivers - it's a cashless festival but doesn't hurt (Boomtown was cashless but had some independent charity things I wished I'd had a bit for) • Baccy with more papers and filters than you need as others inevitably will, plus at least 4 lighters IYKYK • Lollipops and kandi bracelets for swaps/nice thing to give strangers - drinks are too expensive for me to buy randos and I am an overly generous person esp. when drunk

TLDR: Don't be a dick, take care of yourself and those around you, have essentials on hand, hydrate, and enjoy.

I would also like to add:

Don't lean against the wall barrier around the festival, people use them as urinals. And every year I see people crouched and sat down by them. Like come on, you are literally going to catch something doing that. Unless you're into that sort of thing of course.

This is so helpful!

  • one note on omeprazol ; if you are prescribed it alongside other meds it will delay the absorption however your prescriber should have discussed this with you 😊

  • and drowsy antihistamines aren’t a bad idea in the evening 🙌

I’m a newbie so have nothing to add of any use, but mints and gum, electrolytes are a godsend and tissues in every pocket, heck, store them in your shoes, everywhereeeee!!

Every morning I fill my 750ml bottle with water and dissolve 2 alka seltzer tabkets, a dioralyte packet, an a Berocca tablet. I eat a few ginger biscuits, take a note of the time, then have 2 paracetamol tablets, 2 ibuprofen tablets, and wash down with this whole drink in about 15 minutes. Makes me feel way better than I have any right to haha and of course wait at least 4 hours before any more painkillers!

hey what are electrolytes? any specifics to recommend?

1 upvotes on reddit
Euphoric_Orange7369 · 3 months ago

I can check once I’m back home in a couple of hours; they specifically don’t have any Vit C because of taking adhd meds. It’s a juggling act!

Also you want to make sure they are a decent percentage of the RDA not just dust haha (you’ll loose more sweating and alcohol etc)

2 upvotes on reddit
StepAwayFromTheTea · OP · 3 months ago

Dioralyte is the easiest - you can get this from Boots/Superdrug/supermarkets. I do a lot of fasting so make my own electrolyte solution (recepie below) but I just use dioralyte for festivals as taking white powder in is obvs a no go haha

2 Litres Water 1 Teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda (NaHCO₃) 1 Teaspoon Potassium Chloride (KCl) 0.5 Teaspoon Himalayan Pink Salt (NaCl) 0.5 Teaspoon Epsom Salt (MgSO₄)

Going to say it on every post like this, but bring eye drops/eye wash. If it's hot and dry, the dust is ridiculous

If you’re a lady and physically capable of squatting, seriously consider the female urinals if they’re there again this year. Much less smelly than the portaloos if you only need a wee and hardly any queue last year, even during big sets. You can be in and out a lot quicker and you can’t see anything of the people next to you below the shoulder. Bit of Dutch courage helps to get over seeing other people’s heads though.

Start hydrating a week before. Try to be in the sun more leading up to the festival. Shoes are a big one. Be comfortable not pretty

And break in the shoes beforehand too. I bought new walking shoes and my feet were blistered to hell after just the first day. Pain beyond what I could tolerate for a couple days walking.

On that subject. We always keep a couple bandaids in our bag. Mostly for blisters.

Bring a factory sealed water bottle. Amazon has these little carabiner water bottle holders that are relatively cheap that you can clip on a belt loop so you don't loose your bottle and keep your cap. Wear light clothing that covers your skin to prevent sun burns and faster dehydration. Include a Bandana if not for your head and neck to help keep dust out of your lungs and eyes around stages like garage and octane. If you choose to mosh there are rules. Crowd killing (intentionally punching people) is a dick move in most people's opinions. If someone falls help them up don't trample them. If someone wants out of the pit let them out. If you find a lost item hold it up so the owner can find it or return it to lost and found when the band is done. If you choose to crowd surf keep your legs crossed and arm spread but not flayling. This prevents you from getting hurt and others. Also helps to carry you better.

-A "frog togg" towel to put around your neck

  • Chug a bottle of water in the car or while walking up from camp. Toss the empty bottle and have another sealed full bottle in your bag to fill up after you drink it
  • A hat to protect your face from the sun
  • A handheld fan (the kind that clacks, that you have to wave your hand back and forth to use) that you can use not only for yourself but to fan others

A nice little hack that has worked for me is to leave the empty refillable bottles in my bag from day to day. In the last two years I haven’t had security tell me to get rid of any of them (by day 4 this year I had my 32 oz Gatorade bottle and like 9 empty water bottles). If you are parking and walking up I highly recommend drinking a Gatorlyte or Electrolit on the way in as the extra electrolytes will help later.

  • Buy new sport soles for your shoes a couple weeks before the festival. The default soles your shoes come with are sometimes not good enough for 30+ miles of walking in 4 days.

  • Eat a meal before you go inside. Save a ton of money by minimizing the festival foods. Buc-ee’s is also a great place to visit after the festival, it is only 10 minutes away.

  • Dress for the weather. It shocks me to see people in full goth attire and costumes in 100 degree heat. Every year I reserve 4 white/bright colored band shirts to wear for WTR.

NyxNoctiChaos111 · 3 months ago

Do you have to toss out your white shirts? Cause. My guy/gal, I went with 2 white dry fit tank tops and they didn’t survive the dirt. I washed twice, by hand and in the washer and they were still gross. Ended up tossing them out.

Regarding shoes my lesson was: go with the most torn/fucked/old pairs (plural) that you own. Or buy very cheap ones but comfortable ones, because the muck, dirt, walking etc they might not make it. I went with two walking pair of shoes that had done over 300 miles with me so they were pretty beat up and not surviving much longer (un gluing etc) so I made that choice and made my peace and tossed them

This was me and my husband's first time to this festival but having been to others I brought/did the following:

  • flat or small charging block. I didn't use it but we were not familiar with the area and didn't want to get too lost after.
  • Propel or Gatorade bottle packets, sugar-free. I spaced these out throughout the day and they helped a lot!
  • SPF 3oz bottle, a chapstick, and face sunscreen. I almost ran out of sunscreen but also applied religiously every 2 hours.
  • a hat with an all-around brim. Don't get too attached just in case it's knocked off by a surfer or it just flies off when headbanging.
  • cheap sunglasses! There wasn't giveaways here so I brought a cheap pair of plastic sunglasses. They survived.
  • a very packable oversized cotton scarf. Used to cover my legs or sit on the ground. The husband didn't want to use it while standing for some sets... I walked away with a light tan, he was burnt and was showing signs of heat exhaustion.
  • 1 plastic reusable water bottle (with a strap), 3 regular water bottles. We each drank 1 bottle before entry and had the other inside.
  • I wore a workout set with an oversized cotton long sleeve. Also used it to sit on. Tied around my waist when not in use.
  • Ate a decent breakfast but had one large meal meal while there. Avoided alcohol and only had a few sips of a clear soda. I think this helped me the most!!
  • I recommend: a small fan, a few individual wet wipes (the sand is fine and will get everywhere), buying cold water when you need it, and maybe one of those cooling neck towels.

Overall, great experience and even if I had brought a fan or neck towel it wouldn't have changed my experience by much. I do wonder why organizers didn't have a sunscreen sponsor. Other festivals typically offer free stands and you would think the Sunshine State would be all over protecting half to mostly naked bodies but no. The burns I saw on some people looked like hell!!

Get a front facing fanny pack and keep your valuables (phone keys) in it. Don't ever put it behind you, wear it a cross your chest like a seat belt.

I don't know what happened, but just within the last couple years, pick pocketers have been rampant at festivals. I have gotten my phone stolen twice, at two festivals across the states.

But overall you should be fine. If you ever feel uncomfortable, find any group of girls and just tell them I'm feeling a little unsafe, I've never seen anyone turn them away.

If all else fails, find staff, but don't worry too much, been to plenty of solo festivals, had the time of my life, made some life long friends.

Consider a runner's belt like a Flipbelt. It's cheap, thin+discrete enough enough that you can wear it under a shirt, and can hold a phone/ wallet/ keys

edit: I should mention, a thick wallet as well as a phone might be too much, I use a travel size wallet at festivals and it fits fine

Completely agree about finding good camping neighbors. Scope out some vibes, smile and say hi, and don't be afraid about introducing yourself and mentioning that you're camping alone if you find a friendly group. If you find true PLUR-centric ravers they will adopt you and take care of you all weekend, especially when it comes to your safety and comfort!

I've been camping multiple times at different festivals, and have experienced neighbors of all kinds - from some who keep to themselves (which is fine) to others who are so friendly that I basically meld camps with them to form a mega-group that shares all of our food, drinks, etc. together. Again it's all about scoping out different vibes, giving off good vibes yourself, and finding a friendly-seeming bunch. I'm sure you'll do great! Have fun!

PSA: Personal Health & Safety

Posted by Faust56 · in r/welcometorockville · 4 months ago

This is coming from personal and observed experiences:

  1. Know your limits

This can apply to fatigue, hydration, booze, or drugs. If you're unsure if you can handle the next round or are already feeling a bit off, just play it safe and hold off. I'm sure the last thing you wanna do is find yourself being airlifted or carted away from the festival right before your favorite band goes on.

  1. Seek help

If you've accidentally gone over your limit or are worried about something strange, go to one of the medical tents and be honest about what you took and what's wrong. I know it can be scary but it's better to confide in the medics than risk the aforementioned airlift.

  1. Speak up

While WTR has a rad community, it doesn't stop some real creeps from snaking their way into the crowd. Same goes for other festivals. So, if you're receiving unwanted attention (physical or otherwise), speak up! I know it can be scary and you might feel isolated but I can assure you that won't be the case for long. Just remember that you're surrounded by a community known for moshing as an outlet. (This post does not condone violence.) Note: If you aren't confident you will be heard over the music, grab someone for help. Get their attention so they know you need help.

I hope this helps people remain safe and rockin'!

Specifically know what you are consuming. Beatboxes are great but they are double the alcohol of a regular beer or seltzer. One 24 oz beatbox = like 4 standard drinks. Great deal if you want to save money on alcohol but drinking 2 or 3 of those badboys will get you hammered. Have fun but please don't drive intoxicated

19 upvotes on reddit
2deuces2 · 4 months ago

My pro tip would be to pregame before you go into the festival and don’t drink at all (or very lightly) while the sun is up.

You’ll be more aware of your hydration, more consistent in reapplying sunscreen and be more cognizant of your body’s signals (e.g. thirst, hunger, burning).

You’ll be more energized for sure, especially when considering the next day when you’re going back out for rounds 2-4. Not to mention you don’t want to spin out midday and miss or barely remember the big headliners you paid good money to see!

Keep an eye out for your health and others around you also. Remember to stay hydrated and if you get a chance to be smacked by an SOS pouch or two(lmao). Use them or keep them on you for if you or another needs them. While at DC I noticed a festival veteran alone at the time, that was light headed and dehydrated. My fiancée and I got them some water and I helped them to the medical tent to be checked out. Keep an eye out for yourself and others so we can have good/favorable time at these events and others too.

Ghost was a sponsor this year. They had ghost hydration stuff and were giving out free samples, unfortunately I didn’t know about this til I left. I also had a water bottle most of the time, they were giving out as many free emergency water packets as you wanted (or hitting you in the face with them, whichever) I just didn’t really realize that was the problem til I was at the end of the night already, had been chugging waters, I think I just underestimated how humid it was that day and how much that affected things.

Ghost hydration drink and liquid death water and slice healthy soda were the non alcoholic options at the drink bars. I did bring some Gatorade powder individual packets with no problem to add to my water, but I wish I had brought a bottle cause canned water makes that tricky lol

I am planning to head to chicago for lollapalooza next month ! I have been to regular concerts before, but never to a festival. I will be going with friends. I am a bit anxious though, especially since I know those types of crowds can get a little bit crazy. I will not be drinking or taking any substances.

Any tips, tricks, and general things to know??

Thanks !

Sunscreen

Drink lots of water

Have a downloaded map on your phone. The city is a grid system so easy to navigate once you get the hang of it. But reception can be terrible at the festival.

Head covering if there's any chance of if being somewhat sunny. Rather a baseball hat than sun hat, though, in case you have to stand in a crowd.

Always have water on you.

Hand sanitizer/wet wipes.

People hopefully won't pressure you to drink or take stuff. But be prepared with your best "hahaha NO! thanks" reactions.

Waterproof everything if there's a chance of rain. (Well, effectively you just need a good plastic bag or two.)

I 100% endorse agreeing at a meeting point. And it shouldn't be just like pointing at the map and agreeing, but you all going there and actually seeing exactly where you will meet up. Cause the festival terrain maps can sometimes be a bit off and with crowds it can be sometimes hard to find each other even if you are 20 steps away. We normally strategically set it close to a bar/restaurant that happens to be somewhat close to toilets.

Feeling tired? It's okay to go and sit down.

An advanced festivalgoer trick is to not enter or leave the festival when most people do. I'm mostly fashionably late, and get in much faster than those who are early. And then I either leave a little before the last main act finishes, or we wait a good half an hour/hour afterwards, to make sure the crowds have made their exit. I don't know, some festivals actually good crowd control, but it's very very rare to see good crowd control. So I just avoid the worst.

What else... I don't know, have fun!

🛑 Festival Safety Petition — Overcrowding, Blocked Exits, ADA Failures & More

After overcrowding at EDC year after year and what’s happened at other fests like Bonnaroo, we started a petition demanding real safety reforms from Insomniac and Live Nation.

Bro I haven’t been to a festival that has more than a thousand people in like 6 years because the best way to protest these poorly organized cash grabs is to not give them money.

48 upvotes on reddit
pinkskydreamin · 2 months ago

Actually it’s not, because you’re only one person. The best way to protest them is to be loud and convince as many people as possible to similarly be loud and not attend.

That is really what needs to be done. The Fire Marshall has Ultimate Authority. If you are aware of an upcoming show make sure they are informed. If you get 10 or 15 concert goers to reach out they would have to respond.

fooplydoo · 2 months ago

The fire marshall is already involved though. These events are permitted and do not get to go ahead without the fire marshall signing off.

EDC is terrifying at this point. I can't believe the capacity is legal because there is no way it's safe.

I agree. It’s only a matter of time before an emergency happens and people get crushed/trampled bc there’s no way for that many people to efficiently exit at once

You can usually call the state fire Marshal beforehand and they will cite them or shut it down

I felt that Friday and Saturday this year were pretty roomy. Sunday felt very busy, but I feel like most stages are pretty open that you can hang towards the back and have plenty of room.

Love the energy but LN literally got away with 10 people getting crushed to death at astroworld. If the courts couldn't get them to change idk how much hope I have from grassroots stuff

Message to everyone going to see kpop artists this summer

Posted by TurnipMoist · in r/kpoppers · 3 months ago

With more and more concerts being announced, i would like to remind everyone to stay safe in crowds, especially in pit sections. crowd crushes can happen in a flash so be aware of your surroundings and stay safe. Please be kind and courteous to your fellow fans! everyone is there to see the same artists we know and love, so let’s do our part to make sure us and our fellow fans have a great night! that being said here are some concert tips that i’ve gathered from my experiences!

  1. be prepared for and dress for the weather! with many events being outdoors as parts of festivals or stadium/arena shows, it’s important to dress comfortably to make sure you have a good time. make sure you are ready for the weather. i recommend bringing a baseball cap and a water bottle at the very least if you’ll be outside. what i did last year for outdoor summer concerts was bring a handheld fan and a hiking water pack.

  2. make sure you’re aware of your surroundings. With festivals and shows that have standing sections it is possible that you may be in a space that is very crowded and for kpop shows the audience ranges from young to old so make sure that you don’t accidentally elbow someone or accidentally miss a kiddo who’s by your feet. (speaking from experience because i almost wiped out a kid at stray kids’ lolapalooza performance)

  3. if you see something say something. In large crowds you may notice someone pass out, start a fight, any other kind of emergency. at that point you and the people around you need to help get the staff’s attention as it gets harder for them to spot things like these in large crowds. You can use your phone’s flashlight to signal that someone needs help and get the people around you to help get the staff’s attention. We are all here to have a good time so let’s do our part to make sure we’re all safe too!

  4. be kind and courteous to staff. The staff are there to do their jobs and make sure we have a good experience, so try your best to listen and be respectful of them as well. The staff are also there to make sure we are safe as well so please make sure that your behavior is not what is causing the staff to have to become overwhelmed. as fans we represent the people who we stan, so let’s set a good example and lead by example.

  5. be kind and courteous to your fellow fans! people travel from anywhere and everywhere to see their favs, and spend lots of money and time to get there, so try your best to make sure EVERYONE has a good time by being kind and respectful. Especially in venues where the audience is all standing, be mindful of your space and others’ space. Especially as crowds get larger, you’ll need to be more careful because conflict can arise a lot faster/easier.

6.Know when you may need to leave a crowd. I assure you that it is better to be further back in a crowd if that is more comfortable. When i saw stray kids at lolapalooza, the crowd was getting so tightly packed that i could no longer see the stage or screen and could barely move at all. It was also 90 degrees out. So i left that part of the crowd and moved further back to a place where i could both see the screen and could stand comfortably, and i still had an amazing experience. On the flip side when i saw dpr in chicago, i had stayed in a tightly packed crowd and i was also anxious the entire time because i was just getting shoved around. Feeling uncomfortable in the crowd while watching your fave is only gonna distract you from having fun!

  1. be mindful of what you’re holding! if you have a lightstick or poster, holding it up too high or moving it around to aggressively can become a hazard and can ruin other people’s experiences as well. i suggest holding these items at chest level to make sure you don’t block someone else’s view.

Have a great concert season y’all! Stay safe and have fun!

It annoys me especially when some people has bad BO. This are the most basic before you attend a concert festivals.

Edit : Please bring small bag & try not to bring so many stuffs. Many places may have bag checks. Please check the rules if lightstick are allowed.

Keep your phone close to you, wear a phone strap if you want to take photos/videos. This to prevent phones slipping off your hand.

Please refrain from using those metal water bottles. Accident may happen as you may accidentally hit someone,so please used those softer material water bottles.

Please bring some sweets especially if you have low sugar.

As mentioned by OP,a cap & if you have sunglasses would be great. Bring a mini umbrella/ponchos.

This is really good. I want to emphasize that being farther away in the pit is usually a way better experience than being up close. You’re way more comfortable and you can actually generally see a lot more/a wider view. Also, it’s really scary when that “crowd becomes liquid” thing happens and you’re lifted six feet over.

Hitting Escapade??? READ THIS.

Posted by StrawberriesRGood4U · in r/ottawa · 2 months ago

Veteran festival medic here! Want to have your most FUN Escapade ever? Consider these hot safety tips!

  • Wear flat closed toe, closed heel shoes with socks that lace up. Toe injuries are awful.

  • Put something over your damn nipples, even if it's just bandaids. So many ripped nipples...

  • Bring earplugs! The first aid tent will not provide them, and in years past, no on-site vendor sells them

  • First Aid tent also does not provide sunscreen or ANY meds. No Tylenol. No Advil. Don't ask. The answer is no.

  • Don't do dr*gs. Seriously. If you choose to use...

  • Pick ONE experience. Don't do a bunch of stuff at same time.

  • Buddy system! If you're getting messed up, have a comparatively sober friend responsible for you, and then switch for the next night. Be sure your buddy knows what you think you took and when you took it. It helps a LOT to have clues as to what might be going on, and only one friend per patient is allowed in the tent

  • Write any medical conditions, list of prescription meds you take, and emergency contact info on a card or in the phone of your designated buddy. It's really hard to get this info out of you if you're tripping balls and yelling at the hat man

  • Watch your caffeine intake. Multiple energy drinks are a recipe for a date with paramedics as your heart rate reaches that of a hummingbird

  • Do not pre-load on @lcohol. You risk being denied entry, and it's a recipe for pooping your pants once you're inside the gates. Yes, this happens

  • Eat regularly and hydrate. If consuming alcohol, pace yourself by making at least every second drink water

  • If you spot someone who isn't ok, have one person stay with them and send another to alert any staff member (security, FA, etc) for dispatch. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get help.

  • First Aid tent is for more than first aid. Being followed by a creeper who won't leave you alone? First Aid tent. Been assaulted? Come see us and we will get police. Having a panic attack, immediate mental health crisis or thoughts of suicide? We are here for you

  • First Aid are NOT here to judge. We've seen it all. We treat every patient with respect and dignity no matter what you've taken or the choices you've made. We will be nice to you. Please be nice to us

  • EDIT: One last tip is to set your phone unlock to face or fingerprint. That way, if you wind up at the tent alone and are unable to remember your passcode or are unconscious, we can open it using biometrics to answer the texts of your concerned friends. And if you are the concerned friend, PHONE. We can pick up incoming calls even on phones we can't unlock.

Hoping not to meet you this weekend! Have a safe, fun festival, y'all!!!!!

I’ve had barbells in both nips since 91 and have survived three Lollapalooza mosh pits and about a thousand more since with no issues. I too am curious what transpires at Escapade to cause such nipple ripage

Tell the cops nothing and the paramedics everything and it'll probably all turn out fine.

One year at blues fest I I noticed a teen puking her guts out,her moron friends just sat and watched. I ran to first aid. No cops or security where involved. FA volunteer sat with her the whole evening..

Yea her friends were mad that I intervened but I wasn't about to let an incompetent security guard stand by

It's actually quite common. When you have a hot humid day, lots of bodies rubbing up against each other, and people frequently wearing synthetic fabrics, these are ideal conditions for the Nipple Ripper to emerge from his hiding place and rip everyone's nipples for his own twisted amusement. He is a real scourge on the EDM circuit.

Carry some narcan (and learn how to properly use it!) it could save a life

Edit to add: you can get some for no charge at your pharmacy and if you plan on taking drugs test it beforehand. I’m not sure where you can find test strips but I’m certain health centres should have some!

How to stay safe at a crowded festival

Key Considerations for Staying Safe at a Crowded Festival

  1. Plan Ahead:

    • Familiarize yourself with the festival layout, including emergency exits, first aid stations, and restrooms.
    • Set a meeting point in case you get separated from your group.
  2. Stay Hydrated:

    • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration, especially if it's hot.
    • Carry a refillable water bottle if allowed.
  3. Keep Your Belongings Secure:

    • Use a crossbody bag or a fanny pack to keep your valuables close and secure.
    • Avoid bringing unnecessary items; the fewer things you have, the easier it is to keep track of them.
  4. Be Aware of Your Surroundings:

    • Stay alert and be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.
    • Watch for any unusual behavior or situations and report them to security.
  5. Use Ear Protection:

    • If you're attending a music festival, consider using earplugs to protect your hearing from loud sounds.
  6. Know Emergency Procedures:

    • Understand the festival's emergency procedures and know how to contact security or medical staff if needed.
  7. Stay with Your Group:

    • Keep your friends close and establish a buddy system to ensure everyone is accounted for.
  8. Limit Alcohol Consumption:

    • If you choose to drink, do so responsibly and know your limits to maintain awareness and control.

Takeaway: By planning ahead, staying hydrated, securing your belongings, and being aware of your surroundings, you can significantly enhance your safety at a crowded festival. Always trust your instincts—if something feels off, remove yourself from the situation. Enjoy the festival while prioritizing your safety!
