Inserting and Activating a SIM Card
To use a SIM card, you typically need to insert it into your phone's SIM card slot. This is often as simple as placing the SIM card in the correct tray, ensuring it's not confused with a microSD slot on some Android phones [2:2]. Once inserted, the phone should recognize the SIM card, and you may need to activate it by following the instructions provided by your service provider
[1:1].
Finding Your Phone Number
If you are unsure of your phone number after inserting the SIM card, you can check your phone settings under SIM options, which should display your number [1:2]. Alternatively, making a call to another person can help you identify your number if they read it back to you
[1:3].
Prepaid vs. Postpaid SIM Cards
SIM cards can be either prepaid or postpaid. Prepaid SIM cards require registration, and you must ensure that the seller has registered your card, especially when purchasing from a store [2:1]. Postpaid plans involve a monthly subscription fee for network access, while prepaid plans allow you to pay as you go
[3:1].
Using SIM Cards Internationally
When traveling internationally, you can purchase a local SIM card to avoid roaming charges. It's recommended to buy from a telco store and ensure the SIM card is activated before leaving the store [5:2]. Upon returning home, you can simply reinsert your original SIM card without needing any additional activation steps
[5:4].
Troubleshooting SIM Card Issues
If your phone doesn't recognize the SIM card, try testing it in another device to rule out issues with the card itself [2:3]. Additionally, ensure the SIM card is properly seated in the tray and that your phone is unlocked if you're attempting to use a SIM card from a different carrier
[5:6]. If problems persist, consulting the service provider or checking their website for troubleshooting steps might be necessary
[2:1].
I live in the Philippines. My dad gave me a postpaid one 2 years ago, and all I did with it is insert it into the slot in my phone. Now I need a phone number, but I don't know how to get mine or call other people.
That should be all you need. Check that your phone has network, then make a phone call to someone. That person should be able to tell you your number. If you can't do that, you can go in your phone settings, find the sim options but it should give it to you there. If you tell me your phone model I should be able to tell you how to find it
Try making a call.
In Canada we go to the phone provider, buy the SIM, and activate it with a network plan. For example I pay $60 monthly for unlimited access to my providers network. There are post and prepaid plans.
Admittedly I don’t know how the cellular market works in the Philippines but you should be able to go out and buy a SIM from either a network provider or secondary retailer. Once you’ve bought it and activated it, pop it in phone and you’re good to go.
Help! I bought a SIM card from a store and cannot figure out how to use it.
It’s an orange card, was 5 PLN. They looked at my passport, I paid and they handed me the package. I put it in my phone and nothing has came up. It is not showing up on my list of SIM cards or anything.
I tried going to the orange website to see if I needed to load it or how it works but I’m not understanding. Anyone that can help? Thanks!
Are you sure that you put sim in correct tray? It’s possible to mix it with microSD slot on some Android phones.
Even if your phone would be carrier locked you still should get some notification and I never heard about sim being broken straight out of a box.
See if it works on another phone
You can register it in Żabka

Do you have a contract with Orange? Or you just bought a prepaid SIM card in a store?
Prepaid sim cards require registration - are you sure that the seller has registered your card with your passport?
So, you know how you can use your phone and be online without wifi on like a car drive or in a building where you can't connect to WiFi? Do you need a sim card for that, or is there a way to get it without a sim card? And do sim cards where you don't have to pay a monthly subscription, like you but it and it works, do those exist? Sorry if this is spam, someone just wants answers.
You don't need a sim card to connect to the internet
use your phone and be online
If by "online" you mean connected to the internet (world wide web), there are 4 ways to do so. 1. Wi-Fi 2. Cellular Mobile data (via a SIM card) 3. Wireless Hotspot or Bluetooth Tethering from another device with internet access 4. Wired Tethering from another device with internet access.
sim cards where you don't have to pay a monthly subscription, like you but it and it works
Every internet service provider out there charges for internt access. So, if you buy a SIM but don't pay for the service, you won't get it.
Can you give me more instructions on how to do 3 and 4
Get another phone/computer etc. with internet access and create a Wi-Fi hotspot (Settings > Connections, or just search "hotspot"). Some phones/laptops will have bluetooth tethering (Settings > Connections, or just search "tethering"). Then connect your phone to the Wi-Fi hotspot or via Bluetooth.
Get another phone/computer etc. with USB/Ethernet tethering. Enable it in the settings and then connect it to your phone via USB cable or ethernet cable.

How do I go about getting a SIM card for a device like this? How is data handled?
It depends what device and your location. Do you have a business account?
I’ll be traveling to Morocco and London starting next week. I want to use my iPhone 7 (2016 model) internationally. I confirmed with Verizon that it is unlocked, but they said I might have to bring it back in to a Verizon store when I get home and have them install a new card to reactivate it. The last thing I want is to deal with that after 2 weeks abroad. Is this true? Or is this half true and happens to people that don’t know how to reactivate it?
From a technology standpoint, what do I need to know to
Thanks!
> Is this true?
That is not true. It's not even half-true. You just put your Verizon SIM card back in. So the person you spoke to simply has no idea what they're talking about.
That’s what I thought. Is it as simple as popping the SIM card back in, or do I need to run through some activation steps.
I'm not an American, but I've never heard of anyone doing anything beyond just sticking the SIM back in.
Just one tip - when you buy a SIM card, get one from a telco store if possible. Make sure it's all set up and working before you leave the store, that way they can solve any problems for you. The first time I bought a SIM I just assumed it worked, hopped in the car and drove off. It wasn't until an hour later I realised it the data wasn't working properly, and the "help" menus were all in a language I can't speak!
It is as simple as sticking your SIM card back in.

There’s a whole guide in the sidebar for SIM cards.
Thanks, I’m on the mobile app and missed it. I will check it out.
Hello, everyone! I have started using Arch pretty recently. At the moment I own a ThinkPad T470 with a SIM card reader. How can I use that SIM card to make/receive calls, send/receive texts and use the internet? What packages do I need, where should I start?
sudo pacman -S modemmanager networkmanager
systemctl enable --now NetworkManager.service
systemctl enable --now ModemManager.service
After this you have to consult the Wiki and see the name of the device and if the modem is locked.
Do you actually have a WWAN card in the laptop? A SIM card slot is common on Thinkpads but you still had to special order the WWAN card. If you order one, be sure that it's on the whitelist for the BIOS and make sure you buy the antenna as well. Second, you can use it just for a data connection. You might be able to send and receive SMS if there is a phone number associated with the SIM but it won't make calls. If you're just buying a data only SIM card (just do this), it won't have a phone number.
You may be able to flash a modified BIOS without the whitelist if you encounter issues finding a WWAN card of the specific model or one that is compatible with your country's cell network.
Check to see if you even have one by running the following:
lspci | grep EM7455
Follow the archwiki page for Mobile Broadband Modem but there are some other specific resources online for getting the EM7455 running and updated on Linux.
Pretty much I just bought a used T470 for cheap and saw that it had a sim card slot. I ran the command and it didn't return anything so I guess I don't have one. But in that case: why do I even have a SIM slot?
The WWAN modem card is in an M.2 form factor and the interface is standardized. I'm guessing whoever wrote the standard figured that users may need to swap SIMs on occasion and since opening up a device to reach the WWAN card is not user-friendly, they detached the SIM card carrier from the WWAN card. Now, manufacturers can put the SIM slot wherever they want. Lenovo just decided to design a single housing and motherboard for the T470 that included a SIM slot (and maybe even the antenna as well) so a new laptop can quickly be configured for a custom order or upgraded later on.
You can also try just running lspci or lsusb without the grep command and looking through the lists to see if anything resembles a WWAN card just in case.
Because it's cheaper to add the sim card slot to entire line (T470) than to only add it on the wwan models.
Likely when you originally bought this thing you could go to ibm website and decide whether you needed wwan or not as an add-on card.
r/thinkpad would be the best place to ask. Good day.
> The mobile broadband card is a Sierra EM7455. It works with Google's Project Fi
Is better than nothing, but is not super useful
That’s why it has other links and a discussion platform. Better no ask there where people actually have the same device
Please consult with the Arch Wiki first before asking questions here.
The arch wiki is always the first place to look
I am an American traveling for one week in the Netherlands next month. I have an iPhone 8 and use Ting for service.
If I go to a Vodafone store at the airport in Amsterdam and buy a “SIM card” and get help inserting it, do I then just use my phone like normal (internet and texts/calls)? Is it cheaper than using data abroad?
I've bought a sim when travelling before. Works a charm.
However, depending on your provider, you might want to check out their deals. I've read about some US phone companies offering dirt cheap data overseas. I'm not sure of the specifics though. Perhaps try asking on a travel sub?
I browsed my service provider’s site and they don’t seem to have a cheaper option. They themselves suggested the SIM card route.
If it works a charm then that’s what I want. Thanks!
I live in Australia and when I go back to the UK to visit family, I always just buy a UK SIM and then bin it when I leave. Muuuuch cheaper than roaming charges. Just make sure your phone is unlocked (google will tell you how to do that) to any network, and pop in new one. And off you go :)
Thank you! That answers it :-)
I do the same thing when visiting family overseas.
Turn off the iPhone, eject my Telstra SIM out, pop the local SIM in and boot.
As we land back in Australia, reverse the process.
Never had a problem.
You're welcome. It's super easy. Have a great trip!!
Hey guys not sure if this is allowed or not if not please remove it.
My Grandma doesn't have WiFi and she kinda in the middle of nowhere. But we get good cellular data at her place. Someone recently gave us an hp pc and I was wondering if their was a way to put a sim card in it so she can face time family across the country. And simple google searches.
So what can I shove a sim card into to get internet?
No need for sim card, turn on your cell phone hotspot, and your grandma will have WiFi.
If Grandma is anything like my mom, that's going to be far too much to ask.
Yep :-)
My mum would never cope with that, it would go off and she wouldn't be able to remember what to do to turn it on again.
if she has a cell phone set up a hotspot. really no other options. sim cards are for mobile devices and watches
Not really. In my country, many people still use simcard for internet due to the lack of wired internet.
Even here in the UK, some people use 4G for their household internet connection.
some places have poor wired connection but get a decent 4G signal.
Some people use itI think if eg they are renting and maybe there isn't a decent broadband connection at the property
For option2, your internet may get disconnected if there is an incoming phone call.
Portable Wi-Fi routers use SIM cards and cell towers , use that
You can get routers that have a slot for a sim card just do a search for "Sim card routers". Some routers are portable wifi hotspots and can support multiple devices where otthers will connect to the pc via Ethernet while also broadcasting a wifi signal.
Oh sweet. I'll look into this. Thanks.
Hello, I just bought an unlocked Nokia Flip and I was wondering what kind of SIM card to get for it. For context, I really need data to use maps and make a decent amount of calls and texts. I appreciate the help :)
it takes a nano sim.
Nope it takes a micro sim card I have the same one
Where did you find it? I'm still looking for an unlocked one.
Your choices of SIM plans will differ depending on where you’re from. Since a featurephone uses significantly less data than a smartphone does though, you should get by fine with amongst the most basic 4G plans you can find in your country.
What do I have to do or get for my phone to work in Europe? I’m traveling to Spain first from North America
I buy Orange Europe SIMs off Amazon whenever I travel. They always work great. Just change the SIM when you land and you’re good to go! You can also buy eSIMs online but I haven’t tried that yet.
For example: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B09NPQ72VF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
There are three options: (1) buy an international pass or plan from your domestic service provider; (2) buy an eSIM plan for the country or countries you are visiting if your phone is eSIM compatible and unlocked; (3) buy a physical SIM or SIMs in the countries you are visiting if your phone accepts physical SIMs. Which option is best will depend on information you haven't provided.
What is an eSIM? I may be visiting multiple countries but will be based in Spain. Do you have to get a different SIM for every country you visit? I don’t know if my phone accepts physical SIMs. It’s the iPhone 11 Max Pro. What happens if I don’t get a SIM card?
you should use an e-sim and get a europe regional plan!
eSIM is the easiest if you have a reasonably new phone. I used Bouygues my last couple of Europe trips.
Do you have eSIM functionality? I used Airalo on my last trip
When we visited a few years ago, we had the hardest time getting the European SIM cards to work on my brother's phone. But I came prepared with a back-up plan. Depending on how much you need access to calling, data, etc., check the places you are visiting for free of low-cost Wi-Fi. For example, the places we stayed at all offered Wi-Fi and so did many cafes. Some cities have free W-Fi (Parisian parks, public spots) while others have low-cost options (cheap Wi-Fi at all London Tube stations - might be free now).
Thank you!!
