What Redditors are Saying

Is the Dyson Supersonic Worth It?

TL;DR The Dyson Supersonic is highly praised for its efficiency, ergonomic design, and ability to reduce drying time, making it worth the investment for those who frequently style their hair. However, if you are low maintenance or rarely style your hair, a less expensive dryer may suffice.

Performance and Efficiency

Many users have found that the Dyson Supersonic significantly reduces drying time compared to traditional blow dryers. For instance, one user mentioned being able to dry their thick, dense hair in a reasonable amount of time, whereas it used to take hours with other dryers [4:1]. The ergonomic design, with the motor in the handle, makes it lightweight and easy to maneuver, which is particularly appreciated by those who spend a lot of time styling their hair [2:1].

Hair Health and Styling

The Dyson Supersonic is noted for its ability to smooth hair and reduce frizz without causing damage. Users have reported achieving salon-like results, even with damaged or frizzy hair [1:3], [2:5]. The attachments, such as the flyaway attachment, are designed to enhance styling capabilities and are easy to use due to their magnetic connection [1:4].

Cost vs. Value

While the Dyson Supersonic is undeniably expensive, many users believe it is worth the cost due to its durability and performance. Some users have had their Dyson dryers for several years, using them daily without any issues [4:3], [4:5]. However, for those who do not style their hair often or prefer a simpler routine, a less expensive option might be more suitable [1:5].

Alternative Options

For those seeking high-quality alternatives at a lower price point, brands like T3, Chi Lava, and BaBylissPRO have been recommended by users [2:2], [2:4], [4:7]. These options may offer similar benefits in terms of drying time and hair health without the premium price tag associated with Dyson products.

ORIGINAL POST

Husband bought me one for Christmas. I'm a very low maintenance kind of person and not fussed about taking time over styling. Is this a good purchase or should I swap it for a vacuum cleaner instead? 🙈

I love my superstonic, but I know how to and don’t mind doing a blowout. This takes skill and coordination to move a round brush and the hair dryer correctly. I have the airwrap and use that for drying and smoothing too, and in my opinion the blowout never turns out quite as good as using the supersonic, but it is super quick and easy. So If you want an easy presentable hairstyle, and don’t want to do a blowout, I recommend exchanging for that. Curling with the airwrap probably will take some skill, but blow drying and smoothing is easy. If you don’t care about styling at all, get a vacuum. Dyson vacuums are great

So i got mine when i had severely damaged hair and it was a frizz bomb. 15 mins in the middle of a shop just the supersonic and my fingers it was smooth shiny and looked like id been to a salon. I brought it there and then and that was in 2016. Still got it. Last year i got the airwrap. Love that too?

I love my supersonic. It makes blow drying my hair super easy and quick, I can do a dry in five to ten minutes whereas other hair dryers take twenty to thirty minutes on my hair. Having the motor in the handle makes it a lightweight easy to handle dryer. All the attachments attach magnetically so you can angle them to just right and not strain.

The flyaway attachment is amazing, look up some videos for how to use it but it was the reason I went for the supersonic.

If you're low maintenance and don't already style your hair and don't really care to, you're probably fine with a cheaper blow-dryer. The Dyson is great, efficient, and low risk of damage (and I love my Airwrap) but it's probably not going to make you style your hair more than you do already

If you want a high quality dryer but for less, I think the Shark one is comparable and the difference can go to a vacuum!

I have really frizzy hair that only smooths with a flat iron, my life long dream is being able to blow-dry it perfectly with no static! I currently use a Conair one that leaves static, so probably that'll be a step up, but after watching a bunch of YouTube reviews, I feel like it doesn't seem to smooth that much (don't know if I'm explaining myself).

Does anyone has it? Is it worth it? Do you have any blowdryer that's better than the Dyson?

That thing is HELLA expensive

I was going to buy it when it first came out. Then I read the reviews & the T3 had better reviews at the time. I bought the T3 & never regretted it. I want another T3, but can't afford one yet.

I got the Dyson airwrap and I love it. Prior to it I better dried my hair I just let it air dry cause I always thought it was a hassle and it took like an hour (lots of hair). Now I ALWAYS dry my hair and I think it looks noticably better day to day.

Chi Lava blowdryer, work in a beauty supply store, sold 23 in a month and none of them came back. They based the design on the Dyson but cheaper and fixed the complaints people had about the Dyson.

You MUST get the revlon one-step hair dryer! I have it and I don't wear my hair curly anymore because it's sooooo convenient to blow dry my hair with this thing. Watch youtube videos and you will become converted. It costs like $60 and will change your hair game.

I have the dyson dryer. My husband bought it for me for Christmas when we were dating. He did a lot of research, even watching tech you tube videos on it. Ultimately, he decided this was the best dryer available at the time so that’s what he bought me.

I LOVE it. I love the ergonomics of it so my wrist doesn’t actually get tired/leave the dryer feeling heavy. I also love how long the cord is and how it never gets tangled because it’s thicker (unlike my curling iron cord that’s always a mess, no matter how careful I am when I put it away). It cut my drying time in half and using the most narrowed nozzle that comes with it, I get a silky smooth blow out.

I will say that I have fairly straight, white-woman hair. For what it’s worth.

I purchased my Dyson hairdryer in 2016. It is still going strong and it has survived through blowouts, diffusing my curls and dog grooming. I have been less than kind to it and it’s currently sitting on the bathroom floor. Having said that, I can not speak for the quality of the the newer models. Agree that the airwrap is gimmicky and overrated.

Unfortunately, yes. After years of burning through dupes, my husband insisted i get the Dyson hairdryer. It’s honestly an incredible product. I love my sad, limp hair for the first time. Doesn’t damage like the dupes and takes so much less time. To me, the reduction in time spent making my hair look reliably good was worth it. I’ve had it since December and used it damn near daily, so we’re on track for excellent cost-per-use.

Yeah, the Dyson hair dryer really is the only way to live. If mine broke, I’d buy a new one tomorrow. Prior to the Dyson, it would take me like three hours to blow dry and style my very thick, very dense hair. With the Dyson I can actually dry my hair in a reasonable amount of time. Mine is also seven years old and still works perfectly, so absolutely worth the cost.

The hair dryer is definitely worth it. I have curly hair and use a diffuser to style my curls. It DRASTICALLY cut down my drying time, and it's so much comfier to hold. Legit one of the best purchases of my entire life.

Being able to dry my hair in 25-35 minutes when it used to be 45-60 was life changing for me. Now I can do my hair in the morning if I really need to, that was never realistic before. And the short barrel, being able to hold it against my head at the back of the barrel (which you can't do with regular hair dryers bc that's where they pull air) make such a difference for my neck/arms/shoulders.

As bad as it seems?

Posted by Popes666 · in r/dyson · 5 months ago

Hello!

I’m looking to buy my first cordless vacuum and I’ve been trying to look at all alternatives and compare different brands and I’ve come to the realisation that it’s near impossible to decide.

I’ve been eyeing Dyson for years and figured I’d grab one now because it would be extremely convenient to clean the apartment real quick (Twins and a longhaired dog always making a mess.) but there are so many options.

First I was thinking to grab the Gen5, then settled on the V15, then started looking at the v12/v10 and then saw that they’re selling the V8 super cheap. I’ve had them all in my cart at checkout several times but I’ve hesitated.

Then I decided to hop onto here… Reading posts here I see a lot of people recommending the Miele Triflex for several different reasons, especially because of customer support from dysons end seems to be awful and because the vacuums are made of cheap material.

Now I don’t know what to do. Are Dysons products really as bad as it sounds on most posts here or not? Please enlighten me and share your thoughts and experiences!

One thing to keep in mind, places like this are always going to be biased towards negativity. People without anything to complain about aren't as likely to post here.

Generally speaking, no cordless vacuums that I've seen are especially reliable. By default they seem to have a shorter lifespan than similarly priced corded vacs, often because of the battery.

While the miele cordlesses are maybe slightly better quality, I think they lag dyson in performance and bit still. Especially with things like bin size and how often the filters need attention.

As for your choice of dyson, it comes largely down to preference. Want a vac for quick cleanup, and maybe not the whole house at once? V8 is still good.

Want something lighter and smaller like the v8 but with more features and runtime? V12 is a good choice.

Want bigger bin capacity? V10 or v15.

The gen5 is a hard sell I think, its not that much better than a v15 imo.

Oh yeah Mieles definitely are far far behind Dyson when it comes to technology and performance.. It’s crazy that sometimes Triflex is more expensive than V15, at least in Uk

The V15 is amazing. I'm sure customer service isn't "top notch like it used to be". But the truth is that NO company will give you "service like it used to be" because it isn't 1970 anymore.

The V15 is the BEST cordless vacuum you can buy. Period.

I think the stick vacuums from any manufacturer are going to be pretty low build quality, as far as vacuum cleaners go.

When mine does die, I won't be getting another. It's not that it doesn't work well, it does. It's just too chintzy for the price and there always seems to be some silly issues with it due to that chintzyness.

3 upvotes on reddit
Quick_Rest · 5 months ago

The materials on the vacuum are serviceable. I've been using a V8 and V10 for a few years and haven't broke any of the plastic parts or attachments.

That being said, you definitely will run into issues (as with all devices) as they age. On the V10s and newer, you will need to more diligently clean the washable filters, and perhaps do a full teardown every year or two depending on how much cleaning you do. The V8s and older have an additional prefilter and, to me, seem more durable.

My experience with the V10 is two burnt-out motors (replaced under warranty). The V8's battery failed (after 4-5 years) and I replaced it with a third-party one for ~$50. One good thing about Dysons is the extensive repair and accessories market available for them. You'll be able to find more information and parts for even older models.

I do have a smaller shark for my stairs and quick little things. it works decently, but if it goes bad, they don't have the service like a dyson does.

Should I jump on the Dyson Supersonic Island?

Posted by Woobie_belle1203 · in r/Ulta · 2 years ago

Hello all!

I have just enough points to get the Dyson Supersonic Dryer. But it is scary to use all the points when I have saved then all up for some time.

I before for some time didn’t really have solid intentions to get a Dyson due to the extremely high price alone, but I keep seeing reviews just how FAST the dryer dries your hair which is a huge plus for me. I am an air dryer on a wavy girl journey, and the time it takes to dry my hair keeps getting longer and longer (now about 6 hours!) I have a travel dryer that I would use if I have to (maybe like 2x a month at most), and I am a night showerer and it’s a pain trying to time my showers in the evening without ruining plans like dates, classes, work and workouts, getting to bed on time, etc as a full time professional and part time grad student. I have thought about switching my workouts to the morning for this but am not looking forward to drying my hair in the day.

I just HATE using a hair dryer. It makes my scalp feel hot, it feels like a chore to me, and my hair doesn’t feel as nice when I blow dry it (feels dry). So I figured on reviews as well about the Dyson the hair would feel better when I use it vs the travel dryer for sure too. I remember one review saying the Dyson really helped the person not let hair control them which stood out to me.

I want to hear more experiences with the Dyson Supersonic that you guys may have that were in the same boat as me! The coupon also helps make me think it through. I am ready for a high quality dryer after using a travel dryer.

Would it help me in my case of: — Shorter routines / not having my air dries control my life? — diffuse my thin, balayaged 2b-3a waves and keep them healthy when I use it?

And lastly, should I go for it?

I have also considered the Zuvi Halo Dryer based on the premise, and it is cheaper than Dyson but I won’t be using points. I do like the color of the Dyson Vinca blue better too.

Pros and cons for Dyson vs. Zuvi:

Dyson Pros: — Robust dryer, been a longstanding ideal hair tool with lots of credible reviews — Can use all my Ulta points for it, get it for free — Vinca blue and pink is GORGEOUS — Time saver with drying

Dyson Cons: — Extremely expensive — Use all my points

Zuvi Pros: — Cheaper than Dyson — Light therapy on not “baking the hair” is innovative and could be a breakthrough — The mint colored light is pretty cool — Also a time saver

Zuvi Cons: — Out of pocket money — Still a very young product (released last year)

I have the Dyson Supersonic Pro as a hairstylist, and personally I LOVE mine. It so handy and quick for blow drying my clients. I tell everybody that if you have curly, or takes forever to dry hair, it’s absolutely worth the price. The shark version is also good for consumer use for a fraction of the cost but as a stylist, I love my Dyson more.

I own a Miele C3 and loved it in my old place where I had carpets; it was significantly better than the Dyson Animal Ball I had.

Bags = Better

I know I'm in a Dyson sub saying this so it might seem heretical, but it's true, if you want the details you can find them, but I was a Dyson fan before I was ever a Miele fan.

Anyway the reason why I'm seeing this post is I was recently looking to buy a Dyson........and I did!

I got the 15 from Costco, why? Well I have two dogs now and the lab sheds so much it sometimes feels our entire hard floor home has a carpet and the Miele has been a pain to drag around, especially for the stairs.

So cordless stick vacuum for the win right? Kind of. That green light? Holy fuck does it show how bad the dogs actually shed, and the unit appeared to do a good job, but something was nagging me about the performance, it just didn't lift enough off the floor, I had to go back and forth, back and forth and a cleanup would take forever.

The Dyson 15 just doesn't have enough suction compared to my Miele and so I bought a laser and put it on my Miele and had terrible results because the power head was high, but then I got it to the right height and it worked like 3x better than the Dyson, but I knew I had significantly more suction, turns out I needed a "wessel werk rd285" attachment and oh my am I able to clean so much better.

Unfortunately the Miele won't have the pick-up and go usability of the Dyson, but it cleans better and that's what matters most. As annoying it is to pull the canister around, I'll get my cleaning done 5x faster than if I had to use the Dyson.

My only challenge now is returning the Dyson to Costco and braving the massive lines.

They aren't anything special for the price though, people just know the brand and see the ads so this is the only premium vacuum they've tried. Their customer service moved to India entirely over the last few years as they've made massive cost-cutting measures. This is why there's essentially a subreddit dedicated to complaining about their shit customer support.

I've had many Dyson products, and still currently have a V15 Detect vacuum, TP07 air purifier, and two supersonic hair dryers.

The supersonic is actually pretty decent, it's overpriced but I haven't found anything that matches the performance.

The TP07 air purifier does fuck all for actually filtering the air, and it's quite chirpy too because they've cheaped out on the ball bearings for the fan motor.

The V15 Detect is decent, compared to cheap vacuums it's quieter and more effective. However, you have to hold the trigger and it wears out your finger after a while. It's also a tad bit flimsy, the build quality is mediocre for this price bracket, especially the charging dock.

The Wash G1 mop is a joke of a product, it's literally more work than using a regular mop because of how thoroughly you have to disassemble the machine to clean it after every use. Their submarine wetvacs are incredibly shitty as well. Meanwhile my Tineco wetvac washes and dries itself after every use. I'll probably give Shark, Tineco, and some of the Korean brands after my V15 shits out.

Can’t speak to anything other than Dyson. We are on our 4th Dyson. We’ve had 3 different upright models over the years. Then we bought a v15 about 4-5 years ago, whenever it just came out. I haven’t touched our Animal 2 in years. The v15 is great. If I had to replace it I would buy a one without even thinking about other brands.

It may not be the best place to say this, but I believe the V15 has a systemic fault that means people should not buy it. I am on my 3rd (under warranty) as it has been affected by the “stop start” problem. When I google this, hundreds of results come up so I belief it is very common.

The v15 and its predecessor suffered from MULTIPLE IDENTICAL DESIGN ISSUES. These include:

Faulty trigger (snaps internally)

Loose batteries that cause starting and stopping

Poor batteries that don’t last 12 months

How do I know this? I owned a v8, v12 and v15. Over the years Dyson has gotten worse.

We switched to Miele after 12 years of constant problems.

Simple issue is the vacs are amazing when they work but their design has so many weird points of failure now. It’s almost like they do no longevity testing under normal conditions. They’re unreliable.

Meanwhile we haven’t had any issue with ours and it was bought within months of it being released.

I have the Gen5, the digital motobar broke within 1.5yrs of use. This is my 3rd Dyson in 10yrs. Never had issues with the other two models. I contacted them for a replacement part, they said not a problem and it's under warranty. The part has been out of stock since February...

So I am a little bit annoyed. However it did work great for hardwood, tile and multiple rugs around the house. The soft roller with the laser light is crazy hah.

I am going to have to send the unit, wait until they evaluate it and then they will send me a replacement. Might take up to 30 business days :(

My replacement was done under a week for the same model.

You sent them the faulty one and the new one came within a week? I'm located in Quebec and the shipping label goes to Brampton, Ontario. Not too sure if that has anything to do with it. The support agent told me it could take up to 30 business days

Bought my first Dyson do years ago after always wanting one due to brand and hype. This was the gen5 absolute directly from Dyson Canada. If I’m honest, I’ve used it a lot and for my needs between hard floors, carpet and even vacuuming my german shepherd’s fur it has done the job pretty well. Is it worth the $1199 I pad for it back then? I really can’t say. It has been working every day since with only one issue which is the rubber gasket by the cyclones started to come off. I reached out to Dyson last week and they basically told me that they don’t have the parts in stock and offered me to a prepaid label to ship it back for a new replacement.

I know a lot of people on this group have said that they are waiting months for their replacement but from my experience, the old unit was delivered to Dyson on Monday. They shipped out the replacement today with a delivery date of tomorrow.

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer - Worth the $$$?

Posted by hseof26paws · in r/Sephora · 3 years ago

I'm contemplating picking up the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer during the upcoming sale and would really appreciate some input as to whether it's worth it (even with 15% off - I'm VIB - it's still super spendy). I have fine, very straight hair, but it's full. I keep it shoulder length. I almost always just let my hair air dry, TBH because I hate taking the time to blow it dry (I'm always rushed in the am), and also in the warmer months the heat of the blow dryer just ends up making me sweat. But I would love for my hair to have a more finished look, and my understanding is that the Dyson basically dries fast with low heat, and if that is really the case, it might be the perfect solution for me. Thoughts? TIA!

I’ve had mine since it first came out and it’s been a game changer. I have a lot of hair, it’s thick, wavy, super frizzy when it’s humid, and I can essentially have smooth presentable hair after just 5-10 minutes. I’ve spend money on worse things that don’t save me time and energy and help me get out the door faster every day. Also, way healthier for your hair.

I love mine, it cuts drying time down and leaves hair shiny and less frizzy. But it is EXPENSIVE for a hair dryer.

I have no regrets about spending the money on it! Hubby was upset about how much I spent on it but he won’t use anything else to dry his hair now lol 😂

Anyone with experience to know it help fine, thin hair look sleeker or more full?

A cheaper alternative that I like is using my HotTools blow-out brush dryer in a way that's similar to this video, I usually start by spraying a little dry shampoo on first and finish with just a light spritz of flexible-hold hairspray! My hair is fine and flat as can be and this is my favorite daily method!

Yes! It gives my straight, fine hair more volume while also giving it a sleek/not frizzy finish! Just make sure you finish off with the styling concentrator nozzle (really thin nozzle) to get that sleek look.

I have pin straight thin hair and a lot of it. I bought the dyson once and returned it because I thought I was going to get big voluminous beach waves. I waited another year and decided I wanted to buy it again. I use it now to help style my bangs and flip out the bottoms to give it a tiny blow out look. This is the most styling i can achieve with my straight hair and i love it. I think as long as your expectation is reasonable to your hair type you will love it. I also think the blow dryer does give you really smooth hair.

If you have straight hair, I would suggest the Air Wrap. I balked at the price for awhile, and then my fiancé gifted it to me. Holy crap has that thing pretty much replaced any styling tool I’ve wasted money on over the years, except my hair dryer. He asked if I wanted the hair dryer, but I already have a $300 BioIonic Hair dryer I like, and because my hair is so straight, I literally only use it to dry my air.

The Air Wrap, particularly with the new, long barrels allows me to style my hair in ways I NEVER could before.

Someone talk me out of getting the Dyson Supersonic during the sale. 😩

Posted by MeetTheBrewers · in r/Sephora · 3 years ago

I already have the Dyson Corrale and Airwrap and have been itching to get the Supersonic. Should I hold off? Are there better sales that come along in general for Dyson products on other sites?

Why do you need the Supersonic if you already have the Airwrap? They do the exact same thing. If you want to splurge, I'd look outside the Dyson box.

I have dense tightly coiled 4c hair. I like the airwrap, but it does not dry my hair quickly, takes me an hour and a half to do my whole head. From what I’ve read, the airwrap is great for styling but the supersonic works a lot better for blow drying. Also, I am concerned with keeping heat damage to a minimal which is why I’m most interested in the Dyson just because of the technology behind it. What blowdryers do you recommend for the money?

Our hair is different but I have 3a-b hair and the supersonic allows me to dry my whole head in about 6 minutes flat. Never used the air wrap so can’t compare the two but the supersonic has been life changing.

I have both the supersonic and airwrap and though it does the same thing, the supersonic is sooooo much more powerful. Not helping your case…sorry lol

That seems like a completely rational and thought-out justification. Are you sure you want somebody to talk you out of it?! Since you have a good reason, I think your choice should come down to whether buying it now would be a good financial decision for you. I have the Airwrap and use it for everything.

I feel like Dyson never goes on sale- so if you really want it go for it! I think I bought the air wrap during the 20% sale.

Welp! Well I guess I won’t be getting it now. Took too long to decide and now it’s out of stock. 😭

4b-c chiming in! I see you already decided to get it, just wanted to add, if you blowout your hair get the wide tooth comb attachment as well. Makes it such a breeze.

Also, that 6 minutes sounds about the same for me as well. It’s quick.

AI Answer

🤖

is the dyson supersonic worth it

Key Considerations for the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer:

  1. Technology: The Dyson Supersonic uses a digital motor that allows for fast drying while minimizing heat damage. It also features intelligent heat control to prevent extreme heat exposure.

  2. Design: Its unique design is lightweight and ergonomically balanced, making it easier to handle compared to traditional hair dryers.

  3. Speed and Efficiency: Users often report that it dries hair significantly faster than conventional dryers, which can save time during your styling routine.

  4. Attachments: The Supersonic comes with multiple styling attachments, including a smoothing nozzle, styling concentrator, and diffuser, catering to various hair types and styles.

  5. Price Point: It is one of the more expensive hair dryers on the market, typically priced around $400. Consider whether the features justify the investment for your specific needs.

Recommendation: If you frequently style your hair, have thick or long hair, or are concerned about heat damage, the Dyson Supersonic can be worth the investment due to its advanced technology and efficiency. However, if you rarely use a hair dryer or have a tighter budget, there are effective alternatives available at lower price points.
