TL;DR Sound tests for mechanical keyboard switches can vary significantly based on factors like the microphone used, the switch type, and whether keycaps are attached. To get an accurate representation, consider testing with different setups and equipment.
Custom Switches and Their Impact
Custom switches can have unique sound profiles depending on their components. For instance, one user created custom switches using Gateron Red Ink housings, Silent Black stems, and 100g springs, hand-lubed with Krytox 205g0 [1:1]. Despite the lubrication, some users reported a scratchy sound, which could be attributed to the matte finish of new keycaps or microphone sensitivity
[1:2]
[1:4].
Microphone Influence
The quality of the microphone used during sound tests can greatly affect the perceived sound of the switches. Several users noted that microphones might pick up more audio than heard in person, leading to discrepancies between recorded and live sound [1:4]
[2:6]. In one test, the mic gain was so high that silent switches sounded louder than they actually are
[5:2].
Switch Type and Modifications
Different switch types produce distinct sounds, and modifications can alter these sounds further. For example, TTC switches were tested, and it was noted that silent versions can still sound loud depending on the setup [5:3]
[5:4]. Users also discussed the impact of using materials like poron, which can dampen sound
[5:4].
User Preferences and Satisfaction
Sound preferences are subjective, and what may be satisfying to one person might not be to another. Some users find certain switch sounds satisfying, while others may prefer quieter or "thocky" sounds [2:8]
[5:7]. The choice often comes down to personal taste and the intended use of the keyboard.
Recommendations Beyond the Discussions
For those interested in conducting their own sound tests, ensure you use a high-quality microphone and consider testing switches both with and without keycaps. Experimenting with different materials and configurations can help achieve the desired sound profile. If possible, listen to sound tests from multiple sources to get a comprehensive understanding of how various switches perform acoustically.
Still good work! It also could be me putting the phone to my ear while I’m trying to be discreet at work :)
You know what, it could also be the matte finish on the key caps. They are brand new and still have a sound all to themselves that I would say sounds scratchy when I held my phone to my ear.
membrane?
Nope, custom switches made with silent black stems and 100g springs
Sounds scratchy still even with lube?
Funny enough I actually think it has a lot to do with either my mic picking up more audio than I hear in-person, or it could be my lack of fine tuned hearing catching it when I use it. Cause to me it sounds super muted in-person. Not sure 100% though.
fun :)
Posted my project keyboard a bit ago heres the sound test for it. Need to unfortunatly modify some screws to make the external weight fit but I don't think it should change the sound to not have it installed yet.

What keyboard is this??
Its a custom one off keyboard I designed myself
Do you build keyboards? I’ve been trying to get into custom designs but I have little to no close on where or who to go to
Imo, it sounds strangely muted when bottoming out. Like if your swithes were badly lubed, with a bunch of grease on the botom
That's pretty thocky
It’s always hard to capture it perfectly on video, but I think this one came out pretty nice.
Uhhhh it sounds like a keyboard idk
Thanks for posting this video 👍🏻
Damn, those silent switches sound that loud?
The mic gain in this video is off the charts. In real life those switches will not be that loud
bad mic i were used, will use a better one next time
the frozen silent has the lowest sound, and yes, it depends on the board and if u use poron.
To be fair they will be quieter in a board.
Omg just got my gold pinks in. I dare say they're better than my Neapolitans.
Did u get the Gold pink 1st or 2nd?
They both came in this week. Still chilling on my desk in bags
Idk why, but this is so satisfying to watch.
Might need to get me some bluish whites
we get silent bluish white with a grand opening discount.
What’s the difference between the two sample presses without keycaps?
So far there are only the lubed Zealios v2, Cherry MX Blue (unlubed), and the Cherry MX Brown (unlubed).
Let me know what you think so far and what I can improve about the sound, and graphics.
Have fun testing!

Just tested it out and it sounds pretty cool!
I know this is a pretty barebones software but I think it can maybe benefit with some improvements.
For example, the current Zealios V2 sound sample you have is pretty damn good. However, your Cherry MX Brown sound sample is kinda resonant.
If you get some sound samples like your Zealios V2 one that demonstrates the sound of the pure switches alone, maybe you can include some modifiers.
For example, by putting a slight tone down modifier, you can simulate going from an alu plate to a steel plate (which generally lowers the pitch of the switches).
In my personal opinion, it would be great to have something like this:
1. Get the purest switch sound possible. I think the best way to do this is:
Get a plastic case 60% custom
Aluminium plate
Perfectly tuned stabilizers to get rid of rattle.
Foam in the board to get rid of the pinging and only pull out the pure switch sound.
2. The default modifiers should be set to a plastic case and an aluminium plate (As your pure sound samples are from this setup and also most commercial mechs come with this setup)
3. Add some modifiers accordingly to simulate different sounds. For example, you can have modifiers named Steel Plate (Lowers the pitch a lot), Brass Plate (Lowers the pitch a little), Aluminium Case (Increases the pitch a bit and makes the sound sharper by decreasing the duration of the sound), etc. This is probably the most difficult process as it will take some time to experiment and get the modifiers sound right.
These are just ideas though. So far, the software seems to have a pretty damn good base to begin with! I am looking forward to seeing how this develops in the future.
Thanks A LOT! Most of the people that make cherry sound videos don't have audio as good as the one I got for the zealios. Any suggestions for vids I could use to pull some samples from? Thanks in advance.
Taehatypes on Youtube has very clean sound samples, but most of his typing tests are lubed and consist of linear switches and a few tactile which might not be the best for sound samples of the pure unlubed switch. Still worth checking out though.
Chysosran22 has some very clean sound samples for vintage switches. You can check his "Typing Test XL" series videos for the cleanest sound samples.
This is very much needed! When you get to a stable point and are feeling certain about the effort let me know and I’ll send care packages with tons of switches.
That's really cool, thanks!
I might have overbuilt this a little. All in all, I'm quite happy with the result. The HMX Hades V2 feel absoloutely amazing, are quite noisy, though. I wear headphones most of the time, so that's not much of an issue for me, but the leaf (?) noise might be an issue for some, so watch out.
Loud. But the sound is pretty nice anyway. Well done👌🏻
Thanks! Yeah it’s defo not a quiet build 😅
It looks sweet anyway💪🏻
One of my favourite GMK sets.
That sounds crisp. I like it.
Same experience. I got the HMX Hades V2, most terrible switch I've come across so far. It has so much ticking it's unbearable.
one question did you had to change the plate to put these stabs? they are a screw ones isn't it? if you had to change the plate how can i find one?
No I used the plate mounted version :)

I think o-ring don't good for feeling typping, right ?
Some people don't like them some people do. In this sub I feel most people would rather have a silent switch over o rings.
Morning! Did some messing about with my 15g choc linear switches and this is what I came up with, give it a listen.

The mod itself is pretty easy, install generic o-rings onto the cap (prevents the stem from hitting the bottom of the switch), remove the stabilizer bar (cause rattle and doesn't do much) and then apply strips of tape around the side of the top housing (buffers out switch return). Takes a bit of time but I literally can't hear my keyboard anymore :) This also makes the entire typing experience extremely soft!

For the tape I just used regular packing tape applied to the desk, strips were cut out with a razor and straightedge. Clip the wings down before installation :)
What is this wizardry? Way to go that’s like uber quiet. I also love the “Razor shit boxes” comment.
Nah it's simple. I just noticed what was making noise and went from there. The culprits were the stem hitting the top/bottom and the rattling bar. Then I just had to solve them :)
Does the o-ring keep the keycaps from sitting lower on the stem or is there already a gap there?
Neat! I’m gonna have to try this!
It raises it up a touch and the stem is prevent from contacting the bottom housing. I use lowpro boards so it’s not too bad
Hey Guys!

I have a weird problem and I don't know where to start diagnosing the issue. I bought the kbdfans 72 switch tester and found that I really like the Kailh Box Pale Blue switch on it. So I went to Novelkeys and bought the 90 pack version to put into my Massdrop Ctrl Keyboard. The problem I'm having is that the switches don't recreate the same ping sound as the one from KBDfans. I want to think it's a tolerance issue but all the novelkey switches have the same ping but the KBDfans is the one that sounds different and it's the sound that I want.
Anybody have any thoughts on the issue?
(Do you guy's want me to record what the clicks sound like?)
Thanks
could be down to the difference of a switch tester vs a real keyboard, plate and case are going to play a part in how it sounds
Even when taking the switch out of the tester and no keycap - side by side they sound different. I've also read that Kailh switches are prelubed so I don't know if KBDfans did any more to the switches or not. Besides that, I'm pretty sure both are stock switches.
every part of the keyboard is a factor in how it’ll sound. plate, stabilizers, keycaps, whether it’s lubed or not. you have to keep all of that in mind if you want it to sound the exact same.
I totally understand that but both switches are stock switches with no additional lube, keycap, not plugged in or anything.
Just both naked switches side by side sound different.
Kailh did a retool solving many problems with the box switches. The switches in the testers are likely from before that
Well that's sad, I liked the sound of the old switches but i guess if the new switches were resolved of issues, can't really complain.
The only thing they retooled was the cross on the stem where the keycaps mounts, they brought it down to spec-size as it was slightly thicker than the keycaps allowed resulting in cracking/stretching. If you google old vs new box stems you can see the difference. That being said, the change shouldn't affect the sound in the slightest. What you're hearing is the difference between materials that surround the switch and the tester. A switch in a keyboard will be mounted in a plate and soldered onto a pcb, then placed into a case, all of these contribute to sound changes. The empty space inside the keyboard case also makes a lot of difference, this is why a lot of the times, the same switch will sound and can even feel different across different brands of keyboards.

mechanical keyboard switch sound test
Key Considerations for Mechanical Keyboard Switch Sound Tests
Switch Types: Mechanical keyboards come with various switch types, each producing different sounds. Common types include:
Sound Profile: When testing switches, pay attention to the sound profile:
Recording Quality: Ensure that the sound test is recorded in a quiet environment with good audio equipment to accurately capture the switch sounds.
Personal Preference: Sound preference is subjective. Some users prefer the tactile feedback and sound of clicky switches, while others may prefer the quiet operation of linear switches.
Recommendation: To get a comprehensive understanding of different switch sounds, check out YouTube channels dedicated to keyboard reviews. Look for sound tests that feature multiple switch types side by side. This will help you compare and decide which sound profile suits your typing style and environment best. Additionally, consider trying out a switch tester, which allows you to physically experience the switches before making a purchase.
