I feel like I’ve missed out on a load of great games as I don’t normally follow indie games or tend to buy them. In your opinion if you could only choose one indie game as your must play what would it be?
Hollow Knight
Absolutely definitely this. Beautiful art style and if youre me, hours of gameplay before the third boss!
Serious question: How does this compare to a game like Ori and the Blind Forest when it comes to difficulty?
would you recommed it to someone who doesn't like its art style and platformers in general?
I doubted a lot before buying this masterpiece. Now it's one of my favourite games ever. Please, if you doubt, buy it.
Factorio
Terraria
I've never pulled the trigger on rimworld because it just seems like a huge learning curve. Is it not that bad?
Hyper light drifter. It’s fast paced top down legend of Zelda. It’s amazing and I highly recommend it.
No kidding. When I first got the game, I installed it at like 8pm and thought, "ill try a couple hours of this game before bed." I didn't realize the error if my ways until I went to the bathroom and the rising sun was blind me through the window... I played 11 straight hours of Factorio without realizing it.
I love this game and its community!
Good pick, I came here to say FTL
There was a huge player spike in Feb 2024... something tells me that people caught on that this is a great game to play with your partner hahaha.
And, it's one of the rare games that the concurrent players have been increasing over the past 9 years.
Well deserved. It's such a great Game. I bought it shortly after Release and i Always come Back to it, even after a year Long Break.
I only have Love and praise for the Game and CA.
Worst picture I've ever seen on the internet
Worst picture you've seen on the internet so far
It's one of those games that my girlfriend and I go to when we're feeling down, and I feel like it's everyone's comfort game. And seeing how everything seems to be spiraling out of control, I can see why it has so many concurrent players.
I keep looking up videos for some of the best Steam Games and it’s all the same lists with Elden Ring, Stardew Valley, or Hollow Knight, along with the other top 20-30 games that every always recommends. I’m looking for some other recommendations on great Steam Deck games to play that aren’t the same ones always recommended, I’m open to some big AAA games I may be unaware of, but I’m really looking for some additional great indies game to play on my new Steam Deck.
• Previously Enjoyed Games: Some indie games I already have are Brotato, Hades II, Sea of Stars, Deep Rock Galactic Survivor, Tape to Tape, No Rest For The Wicked, Vampire Surviors, and Halls of Torment
• Preferred Genres: I like RPGs, Action, Shooters, Racing, sometimes Survival, sometimes Strategy
• Budget: No budget really, just looking for like 2-3 cool new games.
• Other Notes: Just want some great hidden gems that aren’t the same too 20 over recommended games.
Crosscode: This is a great JRPG in the style of an MMO. Some people get thrown off by the amount of puzzles, but I think they’re great.
Selaco: Super intense shooter with a gorgeous aesthetic. Enemies are dangerous and use tactics, so you have to play carefully.
FURI: This game was the big shit when it released, but it’s been a while and I don’t think it’s stayed in the public consciousness as much. I picked it up recently and confirmed that it still rocks. The gameplay and controls are incredibly tight and the story is so well done.
Spiritfall: This is a really fun roguelike that combines the platform fighting of Super Smash Bros with the roguelike design of Hades.
Crosscode is one of the best things I’ve played in the last ten years; have done two playthroughs and now want to do a third.
CrossCode is utterly incredible given it's the first game the studio ever made.
It's the game that comes to mind first when I get asked what game I'd like to forget completely so I can experience it again from scratch.
CrossCode always seemed interesting but I can't take games where you are "in a game". Star Ocean 3 pulled this on me almost 20 years ago and it killed the whole franchise for me.
100% this! loved this game. There is also another game like this but you mining downwards with dwarfs… can’t remember the name right now but I‘m coming back for it later.
Grim Dawn? An ARPG that will give you hundreds of hours.
Into the Breach in order to warm up for upcoming Mewgenics! from the creators of The Binding of Isaac!
I love Into the Breach! If you like Into the Breach, check out StarVaders.
Loved this game. FTL is a staple, but this one didn't get the attention it deserved.
I can’t stop playing it with massive maps and all the different dome weapons.
I hate the sword tho
Shout out to Drill Core which launched into 1.0 today too, already dropped a ridiculous amount of hours into this game
After playing this game for tens of hours this past week, I think it's almost as if the deck is designed to play ARPG or at least just Grim Dawn due to it's Steam Input. Basically with normal controller you're limited to just a few buttons, but this is where steamdeck excels. You have the touchpad which is basically a mouse with few adjustments. Then you can map the UI and combat keybinds separately, so the trackpad can become a d-pad for extra buttons to press ur skills.
The only annoying thing I found during my playthrough is that selling item is a pain because I can't right click. I suppose I can map it to some button but I'm just too lazy to do it until now lol.
My favorite game of all time and it's not even close. Fun piloting and movement mechanics, phenomenal writing and story, and a wonderful mystery to solve. There's a lot of reading, but most of it is extremely important and it's wonderfully well written.
Go in without spoilers if you can, it's probably one of the worst games to have spoiled because you can't replay it for the first time ever again because of how knowledge based the game is.
Dredge is probably one of my favorite indie games ever along with maybe Celeste
There's an argument to made that it's the best indie game of all time (or at least one of the best)
Disco Elysium, if it can be considered an Indie game.
Yes and yes. Should be among the top indie games of all times.
Depends, is it an indie game? If so, then yes, it can be considered an indie game
Outer Wilds
Fez
Tunic
Spelunky 1-2
The Witness
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes
Animal Well
Nine Sols
What Remains of Edith Finch
Cuphead
Undertale
Night in the Woods
Oxenfree
Hades 1/2
Stardew Valley
Hollow Knight
Hotline Miami
UFO 50
Moonring
Cave of Qud
Return of the Obra Dinn
Terraria
Nine Sols was so good. My personal GotY for 2024, very surprised that it largely went under the radar. Some of the butteriest combat and platforming mechanics in any metroidvania I’ve played.
I didn't find the platforming noteworthy, but I did find every single other aspect of the game to be best in class. It's visuals, music, story, character development, twists and turns, emotional impact, combat, and gameplay systems blew me away.
I did not expect my favorite video game story of all time when going in, and yet, it's climbed to the top of my narrative list alongside Portal 2 and What Remains of Edith Finch (and a few others). It did things I never even anticipated it would do, for the type of game it is.
Outer wilds perhaps the best video game experience I’ve ever had, followed closely by tunic
Couldn't put it down until I beat it. What an incredible experience this game was.
Currently supposedly near the end.. I kinda wonder the same thing too. Just feels like I'm going around fishing without really caring about much of anything else, even the darkness. Like, theres puddles and i get the fish depending on the rod i have (theres like 4 or 5 types) after a minigame and sell them. Ok. There are new minigames when getting new stuff to fish for other fish. Ok. Now that I have all the fishing rods, I can fish all of the stuff. Ok. Oh this guy seems sketchy wanting all the relics. Ok. I wont hand them to this guy I guess.
I stopped playing when I got the last fishing rod to fish stuff, because it never really... changed from just going out, fishing puddles, going to the town to sell stuff, and doing it again after maybe buying and sorting some stuff.
Maybe my expectations were a lot higher, but this is legit just a roblox fishing game; but with less grind. The atmosphere was nice, but I genuinely didn't have an issue just dealing with the darkness and avoiding stuff most of the time.
There are barely any indie games on that list.
Expedition 33 is an indie game, blue prince is an indie game, monster train 2 is an indie game, despelote is an indie game, pipistrello is an indie game, sea of star is also an indie game
I think the implication here is that the term "indie" has become such a wide net, in the past indies were all smaller less ambitious games, now indies can have long development cycles and actual budgets and teams, that's a good thing honestly, good to see more ambition, alas many small Devs fear that the wife gap will make their zero budget games look "worse" when compared to other indies, just my humble opinion.
If you immediately assume Expedition 33 is an indie game you need to rethink your concept of an indie game...
How many hours before I get Blue Prince's brilliance? 2 hour in and I'm bored to tears, and Outer Wilds is on my top 5
This game has a weird curve. Early game is its weakest part to some. But I didn't mind this part because I still liked the roguelike elements and general mechanics. Do IMO early game was just fine.
Mid game is its strongest (post room 46). There are many interesting threads to follow, you are trying to put everything together like OW. I was having the best time.
Unfortunately, Blue Prince failed the landing. The late game, where you mostly exhausted the threads and everything converged to a few or single puzzle (which get increasingly cryptic), is just frustrating. Mechanics become hurdles more than tools at this part. And the worst is, story/lore wise game is just unfinished. Beating the hardest puzzles of this game is just rewarded with other hard puzzles, or nothing at all (doesn't move the story forward).
It's my biggest disappointment of recent times. I can't not recommend this game because most of the game was well done, but it comes with a huge asterisk unfortunately.
I think it's the kind of game you have to like both the puzzle element and the roguelike element. I'm on day 160ish now and reached room 46 about day 25, it's the kind of game that rewards your careful thought and patience. That's not for everyone but for those that it is it is phenomenal
If you don't like it two hours in, I don't know if it's for you.
I was hooked from the prologue. That said, while it's a cool game, I think it pales in comparison to Outer Wilds. I think BP is a lot more flawed, but still a great game.
I think that most people that bounce off the game do so because they get laser focused on trying to get to room 46 ASAP. The best thing to be doing this early in your playthrough is just trying to see as many different rooms as possible.
That being said, Blue Prince's room draft seems truly random, so it's possible that it literally just hasn't shown you some of the more obvious interesting things to pique your curiosity.
Amazing few months for roguelikes. In addition to Blue Prince and Monster Train 2, there was StarVaders, 9 Kings, Lonestar, Gnomes and Nordhold. Slay the Spire 2, Mewgenics, Undermine 2 and 1.0 of Hades 2 later this year!
I reached room 46 and I was almost emotional, and I was thinking "damn what a masterpiece"
Well, here I am, 100h later, not even knowing when this game ends lol
Of this top 10, at least from my definitions of the different videogame weight classes, that’s 6 indies (Blue Prince, Monster Train 2, Despelote, Pipistrello, Talos Principle, Sea of Stars), 2 AAs (Split Fiction, Clair Obscur) and 2 AAAs (Monster Hunter, KCD2). I could see the argument for Talos being AA and KCD2 and Split Fiction being a tier lower and higher respectively, but still, it’s a lot of proper indies no matter which way you slice it.
Looking for the best suggestions, I wanted to start a new game, and I mostly enjoy action-based gameplay. Any suggestions?
Hollow Knight - I think this game is a masterpiece and perfect in every aspect - art, music, gameplay, atmosphere, smoothness of controls.
Stardew Valley - it's a farming-sim so not a lot of action, though there are some monsters and combat. This game received a lot of love from both gamers and non-gamers/first time gamers. What is even more impressive is that this outstanding game was made by a single developer.
+1 for Stardew Valley. There's a reason why it's one of the top rated games on steam.
You don't get 600,000 reviews and 98% positive for nothing.
I don't understand the madness with Stardew Valley, it's one of the worst games I've played.
Everything revolves around "making more money" (while in the lore the guy actually wants to leave the routine and values of our capitalist society... super contradiction), everything revolves around completionism (something I hate and which I find quite harmful), everything around addiction, bad dopamine: "am I going to be lucky today?", "One more mineral to see if I like a rare resource", "one more floor to see if I find anything new", "go back to the merchants and hope they have a new item", "am I going to have luck at fishing", "will I get a reward after doing this or that", etc., I find the structure of the game really terrible. Everything is done to extend the lifespan as much as possible, everything is very expensive so that you do the same actions 1500 times before progressing, everything is ultra superficial.
Typically the kind of mechanic that is normally frowned upon but here strangely people say nothing, I don't understand why in this case people say nothing when they would destroy other games that do the same.
Not to mention the social aspect which is just awful and one of the worst mechanics I've ever seen, by far...
Not to mention the fights which are ridiculous, the fishing game too... In short, I find it really sad that this type of game is put forward and valued so much I find the game empty of interest and based on bad mechanics.
It's a super casual game that anyone can play because it doesn't require any special skills and I imagine that's the main reason for the positive reviews. But in terms of playful interest it's abysmal imo...
I'm not fan of stardew valley myself, but when it went on special for a few bucks, I bought it to support the game as I've heard the dev is pretty amazing and constantly updates the game for free.
For me I think these are the must play action indies (in no particular awesomeness order):
Terraria
Hollow Knight
Hades
Enter the Gungeon
Streets of Rogue
Risk of Rain series
Hotline Miami series
Deeprock Galactic
I double Noita and suggest Exanima, Inscryption, Don't Starve and Kenshi, but they don't have a lot of action in them.
I love Kenshi. I don't think it's a great fit for everybody but it's one of the best for base building and character development. Playing with mods can help overcome the difficulty too if needed
Same. And I don't even like roguelites. But Noita just manages to be on a really unique space.
Definitely Slay the Spire.
Not an action game, but it is absolutely amazing!
I love Noita but it's hard to recommend. If you stick with it enough to become competent though, it becomes one of the best magic games out there and is fun for hundreds, if not thousands of hours.
I love puzzles games but this is legit the hardest puzzle game I’ve ever played. I feel so dumb playing it. But I still dig it.
Journey. Loved that game so much that I painted a scene from it on a 4’ x 3’ canvas for a scene design class.
Flow and Flower from the same company are small, but also amazing games. But Journey takes the cake for me because of how they did the multiplayer aspect. I played it on the PS3 years ago, recently bought it again for PC and it lives up to my memories of it. It's a beautiful game.
Flower is another fave from thatgamecompany
I once started a playthrough and came across a random other player near the beginning. It wasn't my first playthrough, but it clearly wasn't theirs either.
Took a couple of chrips to get their attention, but we led each other to every item we needed. And even with our tiny little scarves we managed such a solid chrips pattern that we literally flew through levels completely in sync without a single spoken word of communication.
We got to the last walk and I lost them. Don't know if it was a disconnect or what, but I refused to move forward without them. Took a couple of minutes and they found my ass frozen in the snow and we kept going to the finale together, still flying in perfect sync. When the end credits roll and it tells you who you met along the way it was a single gamer tag, and a message popped up. It just said "Thanks for the Journey :)" from my buddy.
It always stuck with me how you could form a connection like that without a single word and a common goal. And the fact the Journey could give that experience has made it one of my top 3 games of all time.
that’s so incredible. Journey has a multiplayer experience that I have never had replicated anywhere else.
So beautiful! I saw a review of Spirit of the North (which I love, it's so chill) comparing it to Journey, so I am really looking forward to playing it.
I’ll have to check it out! I play through Journey whenever I need to just center myself and remember that my life isn’t just the exact moment I’m in.
HADES!!! id vote for stardew but it already won earlier lol
It's Hades for me as well. Supergiant Games is just on another level.
Night in the Woods or Hollow Knight!
Hollow Knight seconded!
Stardew truly is the ultimate indie success. Single dev, enduring fanbase, constant updates etc etc.
But since they did already win an earlier category I'll say Hades.
Small dev team with so much passion who really created something beautiful. I would recommend people to watch the documentary they made on the Hades development period. Link to the playlist on YT here.
Lowkey nostalgia bias lol.
Also tried to not put more Sandbox games like Garry’s Mod or Minecraft cuz it feels too different mechanically, still love both games.
Still need to play more indie games, there’s also a bunch i haven’t finished but been enjoying so far especially some more obscure titles.
Link to list: https://bckl.gg/cHOz
disco elysium, hollow knight, dead cells, stanley parable are just peak. couldn't get into outer wilds tho. also u should try celeste if u havent already
Valid, i loved Outer Wilds and i understand why it turns off some people, it’s a slow-burn, especially at the start, imo this game is more about the exploration and the journey rather than the ending and outcome, it’s my favorite cuz it tackles the mystery excellently.
Only played a bit of Celeste a long time ago, i remember liking but i was still early in the game, i’ll rank it once i actually finish it.
i miss when indie meant true independent developer, now it’s just any non-triple a devs… ori was published by xbox game studios, outer wilds and edith finch by annapurna interactive, blasphemous by team17…
Yeah can’t wait to see „favourite indie games” lists with BG3 or the Witcher 3 (which is a hidden gem btw)
but they were PUBLISHED by them like i said, meaning they had big funding and support. which goes against the definition https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_game
Have you played shovel knight?
A long time ago, i still haven’t beat it but i enjoyed it, i need to finish it and refresh my memory
Try it, it is very good and it has 4 campaigns. I think you will really like specter of torment if you liked hollow knight combat.
Thoughts on Hotline Miami 2?
It was alright, fun sequel but nowhere near as good as the first one, they removed the mystery and downgraded the level design ngl
They were sort of my initial thoughts but I really loved it I'm the end. As someone who was obsessed with the first, I can't really go back to it now after the second. Custom levels on PC be lot as well
Bro missed celeste 😮💨
Hi there!
I recently got back into PC gaming after a long hiatus, because I'm not into most AAA games anymore and the indie scene seems more vibrant on Steam. Bought a lot of rouge-like and deck building games, two of my favorite genres. Mind you, this was about 11 days ago... I've only literally been playing 2 games. I'm not bored with them yet which is crazy, which makes my bulk purchase kind of funny. I do work full time, but still. Just thought I'd get bored with them after a couple of hours and move on.
I heard stories of people not playing most of their game library. Does this tend to happen to anyone else?
Also, shout out to Slay the Spire for changing my life. Prior to playing it was completely bored of gaming. It made me realize how amazing the indie scene is, especially rougue-like games.
My friend group plays nearly every day doing daily challenges and competing. Best game ever. Shame on developers for not making STS2. We have a plan to kidnap them and force them to make it, you in?
No, I am the exception. I Just finished and unlocked all achievements for m final and 120th game (Hitman 3). Nothing to play now until Phantom Liberty Releases.
I only buy one or two games I intend to play at a time :D
Ye i get humble bundles which skewed mine a bit. All the games i havent played where in bundles along side games i wanted to play and have.
Is Payday 2 in there?
Have you heard of FANATICAL or HUMBLE BUNDLE ? These are the reason to everyones back logs. And Steam sales. I will go out on a limb now and say Gamepass may be contributing too. Too many good or interesting games that are dirt cheap. Buy now so you got them, and play later!
I have, but I'm very picky about the games I play, since I used to blow money on ones that I literally didn't play. Kind of know my style of game now after all these years so buy them individually.
Indie games are always on sale, it makes so much more sense to buy one or two you're interested in and actually play them then it does to spend $200 on a backlog you won't touch
Tells us they bought a bunch of games but only been playing two really awesome games (apparently) but not what two they were. That's kinda cruel... lol.
Luck be a Landlord and Hellcard. Hellcard is addicting if you play with others online.
Ive been hooked on goobies lately.
wish you can gift unplayed games, welp
What do you guys think is the greatest indie game ever? My pick is hades, but I’m curious what others think.
Hades has a massive following and everything about the game is of the highest quality. The writing, the story, absolutely amazing. The voice acting is simply incredible. The art… oh my god the art is so beautiful. The backgrounds, the characters, the animations… all of it is so beautiful. The creativity of all its components, it’s intuitive mechanics, it’s simplicity yet difficulty, it’s wide accessibility to casuals and pros. For the most part, enemies are unique and mini bosses are all different. All boss fights really feel different and all rely on different attack patterns and styles. Each biome is very unique, with different traps, different enemies, different mini bosses and unique art styles. And Styx is totally different from the others and it works so well. The credits rolling is my favourite moment in any game I’ve ever played. I just sat back, cranked the volume and soaked it all in. In The Blood is actually a masterpiece and I listen to it all the time unironicly. And when you unlock it on the juke box and play it months, years after rolling credits it snaps you right back to that moment. And The Unseen Ones is actually nuts. The talent on display is ridiculous. And all of this was done by a tiny studio and the quality surpassed most triple A games. All in all, hades is my favourite indie game.
I think if you’re counting all indie games it’s got some serious competition. Celeste, Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Ori and the Blind Forest, just to name a few. But I do think it wins best rogue like.
I love Hades, like—LOVE it.
But in my honest opinion, Stardew Valley edges it out. Having played both games for 100+ hours, I think Stardew edges it out when you consider the overall quality and quantity of content as compared to the amount of effort and resources put into the game development. Stardew was created by literally one guy. One. He did music, art, design, writing, coding. Everything.
Hades and Stardew Valley are very different games. Both are great, but if we’re ranking indie games based on traditional indie values? Stardew is as indie as they come, and it’s received mainstream critical acclaim.
Zagreus is goated though and I’ll be playing Hades 2 the day it releases
Yeah, those two plus Celeste would be my picks - and I really couldn’t separate them.
Hades for its ‘just one more run’ addictiveness that kept me up until 5am last night, its seemingly infinite ways to play it, and the way they’ve somehow married that with great storytelling.
Celeste for its incredibly polished character movements (so polished they’ve ruined a bunch of other platformers for me), its plot and hard-but-fair difficulty that made me think ‘I must finish this game’, and its soundtrack and all sorts of other details.
And Stardew because, as you say, it was made by one guy. Which just honestly blows my mind every time I think about it.
Stardew valley being created by one guy is really impressive but doesn’t necessarily make it a better game.
I agree with all of these but I would add Slay the Spire and Outer Wilds
For me, it's definitely one of the best roguelikes, along with nuclear throne, slay the spire, and FTL. But I'd be hard-pressed to pick my favorite among those four.
I'd say Minecraft (before Microsoft buyout) and Terraria
Hades/Slay the Spire/Stardew Valley/Dead Cells/Undertale are good contender for third place
Came here to say this. People forgot that Minecraft was an indie game when it came out in alpha... 13 years ago something like that?
Hollow Knight or Dead Cells
I'm playing Hollow Knight for the first time rn. Had it on my backlog for like 2 years as I plugged through "lesser" metroidvanias. Don't regret it bc this has been an S-tier metroidvania experience that I would have subconsciously compared all those other games to.
I absolutely love Hades even though I’m usually not a rougelike/lite player. But best indie game for me is Outer Wilds, without competition. Might be my favourite game of all time.
Yeah it's outer wilds and the competition is not close. Best game I've ever played. Love hades to bits but Outer Wilds is on another level
