North Side Neighborhoods
The North Side of Chicago is frequently mentioned as one of the safer areas. Neighborhoods like Andersonville, Lincoln Square, and Ravenswood are considered safe and family-friendly [2:1]. These areas are known for their community feel and are popular among families and young professionals. While crime does occur, it is generally less frequent compared to other parts of the city
[2:2].
Wicker Park and Bucktown
Wicker Park and Bucktown are popular neighborhoods located in the northwest part of Chicago. They are known for their vibrant atmosphere and appeal to younger residents [1:2]. Although these areas are generally safe, it's important to remain aware of your surroundings, especially during late hours
[1:3].
Lakeview and Lincoln Park
Lakeview is another neighborhood often cited as safe, though it has experienced some gang activity [3:2]. Lincoln Park is trendy and attracts young people, making it a lively area with relatively low crime rates
[2:1]. Both neighborhoods offer a mix of residential and commercial spaces and are well-regarded for safety.
South Loop
The South Loop is considered safe by many residents, particularly during daytime hours [5:1]. It is described as quiet and close to various amenities, making it a convenient place to live
[5:7]. However, as with any urban area, being aware of your surroundings is advised.
General Safety Tips
While Chicago is a large city with varying levels of crime across its neighborhoods, many commenters emphasize that being aware of your surroundings and avoiding certain areas at night can enhance safety [5:8]. Public transportation, such as the CTA, is generally safe during rush hours, but caution is recommended late at night
[1:3].
Any mention of crime on the Chicago subreddit gets buried or banned so I figured it was worth a shot to ask here.
Scenario: early 30s male moving from NYC, have lived in the city for around a decade. Some shitty neighborhoods, some nicer ones. Not unfamiliar with navigating a city, crazy people, an element of crime etc.
Looking into the following neighborhoods: Wicker Park, Avondale, UV, Bucktown, general NW area.
What are the realities of crime here? Does anyone on this thread live in any of the above and have an honest take.
I'm less concerned about myself and more concerned with my partner as we'd both be commuting in and out of the downtown area daily (she is early 30s, white female). It seems like even the northwest is getting hit with waves of crime and frankly I'm just trying to get a gauge on whether experiencing crime is deemed an eventuality in these areas, or an outlier.
Not living scared, just looking for perspective. Any insight?
I've been in Chicago for 15 years now. Lived on the north side, west side and currently south side. I would never live on the west side again. Those neighborhoods you listed are generally safe, but as any major city just be aware of your surroundings and don't put yourself in dangerous situations
Still learning my regions here, does West side include the ones I listed? If so, what's your aversion to the west side?
Wicker park and bucktown are northwest, and generally popular with younger people. None of the neighborhoods you listed are what we would consider west side. All north side neighborhoods. West side I feel has the most crime, I have personally seen more shit living there in 1 year than I've seen my last 6 years in the south. But Chicago is huge and south and west sides have lots of neighborhoods spread out vs north being more condensed.
Forget what other people said commuting on the CTA is safe during rush hours. And all those random carjacking robberies happen, but in the wee hours. Especially like 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. so.
you didn't mention your race. it matters, a lot. if you aren't black, you'll be preyed upon in any black neighborhood. if you are black, the city's your oyster.
Only take the brown line, seriously. The crazies live underground.
Hi everyone!
My GF and I have considered moving to Chicago in the past. We went during the winter (January) and we think we might be able to withstand it. The only thing that worries us (more so her) is the crime. Now, I know Chicago is not the war zone rightwing media outlets would lead one to believe but I do know most big cities have crime issues in some form or fashion. In an ideal world, we'd live on the North side (Andersonville, Lincoln Square, Ravenwood). Yes, I know these areas are considered the safest, but we keep hearing stories from people saying that crime is even seeping into these neighborhoods more frequently. We keep hearing about "random" robberies that have occurred in broad daylight.
Does anyone live in these areas or close by? Has anyone recently moved to Chicago? What has your experience been?
Thank you!
Do the people who are telling you about crime seeping into those neighborhoods actually live in those neighborhoods?
Here’s the thing: all cities have crime. Virtually all neighborhoods within cities have at least some crime. The three neighborhoods you mentioned are extremely safe but yes, crime does happen.
I live in Logan Square which is similar to those but has a higher crime rate, but I still feel quite safe and have no reservations raising my kids here. Depending on what sort of environment you’re coming from, it may take some adjustment for you to get used to being situationally aware in different spaces. But for me, that is a cost of the true awesomeness of living in an amazing giant city with endless cool things to do.
I lived in Logan Square back in 2012, loved it. Not in Chicago anymore, but is it pretty much Wicker Park pt 2 now? It was trending in that direction back then.
Great to hear, moving there with my toddler shortly, on the edge of Logan/Bucktown. We have extensive city experience but are coming from Portland which has tested us.
Welcome to the neighborhood
Suggesting that dealing with crime is the “cost you pay” to live in a big city is hilarious when Chicago is one of few big major cities with this much crime. It’s a tax you pay in Chicago but don’t pay in Munich, Barcelona, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Sydney, Singapore, Osaka, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Dubai, Seoul, etc.
You are saying this to cope but it ’s simply completely untrue. And most of these cities are much larger than Chicago.
I've lived in Chicago for about two decades. Currently live in the Loop, previously lived in Roger's Park, Edgewater, Conners Park(Gold Coast), Old Town, and a brief period of time in the first-ring suburb of Forest Park, which while not specifically in Chicago is served by both the Blue and Green CTA El lines, which I rode a pretty fair amount. I work as something of a real estate analyst who specializes in low income housing, which takes me to pretty much all of Chicago's 77 community areas. In the nearly 20 years I've lived here, I have only been mugged once. And it was in >!Milwaukee.!<
I'm still a little salty about it.
I have to say that the craziest thing that I ever encountered crime-wise was one day about two summers ago my fiance and I were drinking at a rooftop bar of a building that had a homeless encampment behind it. All of a sudden, we heard the tell-tale sounds of "pop-pop-pop," "BAM BAM," "pop-pop-pop" from down below. A little old British woman sitting next to me turned and asked, "Excuse me, sir, but is that gunfire?" To which I informed her that we wouldn't want to jump to conclusions but since there were two distinct sets of sounds, we may want to give it 5 or 10 minutes before peering over the edge of the building to see if the coast was clear. The name of that bar is >!The Warwick Rooftop!< located in >!Denver, CO.!<
Aside from maybe cajun binaca, which Ive never even pulled out let alone used, I go about my day unarmed and the the worst thing I really ever come across are the occasional aggressive panhandler, which are becoming more common on the el. What I did learn from getting mugged though was, while it's totally fine to take public transportation out to a restaurant/bar, as a working professional who can afford a ride share back home, if it's late enough at night sometimes it's just better to hail that uber/lift/curb. Before my fiance moved in with me in the Loop, she lived in Ravenswood and we spent a fair amount of time in Lincoln Square & Andersonville, and honestly those places are so safe it practically feels like you're in the suburbs. Going south into Uptown or west into Albany Park can get a little iffy at times, but there's still stuff worth seeing there if you keep your head about you. (Incidentally, I was just up in Lincoln Square yesterday to go drinking at Mayfest.)
So yeah, there is some crime here and there, but the neighborhoods you're describing may have some minor property crime (stolen bicycles, etc), however, crime from physical violence is much less common.
Also OP, whether you guys decide to move here or Seattle, one thing a buddy of mine showed me when he moved here from downstate Illinois which he found useful was the Strava Heat Map. If you're not familiar, Strava is an app that helps people keep track of their workouts while running outdoors. While it's not exactly foolproof, he noted a strong correlation between highly trafficked running areas with safer neighborhoods. If you have any other questions, let me know.
Ha yeah. I've lived in Chicago (30+ years), NYC, and a few other cities. Exactly twice have I ever felt really afraid for my life from a stranger, like knowing they really meant to do me harm. >!They were both in Roanoke, VA!<
The only city I’ve been mugged in was >! SAN JOSE !<
Lived in Chicago for a decade and only recently moved away.
In short, we didn't have any issues until our last year there. As they say, you don't have an issue until you do.
Anyway, in the last year of our residence there...
-- I was walking my friends dog in Rogers Park and there was a shooting on the same street. We hid under a Jeep.
-- I got mugged and our car got stolen. It was later found and later totaled. This happened in Uptown.
-- I got robbed by gunpoint. This happened in Michigan Ave. Since people ask, it was beautiful summer afternoon in broad daylight.
I will always hold Chicago close to my heart. It's a beautiful city and we didn't have issues for a long time. We largely took the train and lived from Pilsen to Rogers Park.
Out of curiosity, who do you hold responsible for what had happened in Chicago?
Statistically you'll be fine. I lived in Chicago for twenty years before moving to Austin and the worst issue I had was my bike getting stolen when I forgot to lock it. Most of my friends had similar gripes. That said, one of my friends was carjacked at gunpoint in broad daylight in a good neighborhood. She was just the unlucky one.
I live here. Used to live in Andersonville, those areas are all fine- very gay or lots of families. LP is more young people and trendy.
Crime can be random (saw a dude robbed in broad daylight in Andersonville, a dead body in Uptown etc), even in nice areas. BUT the bad areas are pretty obvious and you have no reason to go there unless you are looking for trouble.
Avoid the CTA later at night or certain lines like the Green line
I'm Nigerian American who maybe wants to travel to Illinois and Massachusetts in the future. My question is that is Chicago safe? Natives of the city what do you think is the state of the place.
Is it really racially segregated?
Lakeview but even there, people were shot last year bc there’s still gangs. And it does look racially segregated bc certain areas will have majority 1 race for sure but it’s more segregated by social class imo.
Northside is usually the safest but there are gangs there primarily in Rogers park, Humboldt park, Belmont Cragin, Albany park, Uptown but if your a nuetron your good. It’s segregated mostly on the south and west sides.
Not humbolt park… well the southwestern half of humbolt park basically under grand ave is a section of Outwest which is dangerous af. The north eastern part of humbolt above grand ave is not bad tho
Tbh if you just do you and not flodge around you'll be alright anywhere, I'd say stay at a hotel in the med district, west loop or downtown.
just go to the suburbs💀
Suburbia Gangs? 🤔
Adebisi choppin undercover cops head off up there
parkway gardens is a beautiful area
My friends and I are moving to Chicago in October. We're looking for apartments and just wanted to make sure we avoided any rough areas. Was gonna post a pic but can't so l'll try to describe the area we're looking in: going west out of down town using 290 as our bottom line up all the way to Evanston and out. Any neighborhoods to avoid?
I've tried looking up neighborhood by neighborhood but all of them have too many mixed opinions so wanted to see what stood out to people as just big “no” places. Thank you!
Finally someone asks this question! Its about time someone asks if a neighborhood is safe!!!
Not just a neighborhood, an entire quadrant
Just avoid the whole city
DO NOT ENTER CITY LIMITS
By law, all visitors are shot to death every time they enter and then every 24 hours after. Save yourselves!
Don’t come here
If you want a serious awnser then you will need to be more specific, you've just described about half the city. But in general, yes, Chicago is safe.
Is South Loop considered a safe area?
Every major city, in every country, since the dawn of time has had crime. It’s no different than any other major metropolitan area. The south loop is alright. Mostly boring as shit.
Looked at some condos in South Loop but ultimately passed. Too quiet over there
Funny, that’s exactly what I like about it, close proximity to a lot of things especially transit but fairly quiet itself.
you should have seen it 25 years ago, after they closed the methadone clinic the place was a complete.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
It’s no different than any other city? New York is 4x the size of Chicago yet has far less homicides and crime. same with LA.
Chicago is the 3rd largest city yet leads the nation in homicides and carjackings
Weird, I've gotten outside of Chicago and the US and I don't see murders on the local news on a weekly basis
🍪
You’ll be fine! Chicago is a wonderful city.
People don’t like and get angry at this question. Safety for me depends on time and place. I personally am always watching my surroundings regardless.
Nope
Yea I’m out and about with my kiddos all the time. Not late at night, bc they gotta sleep, but never feel unsafe. Sometimes if Roosevelt has a bunch of people hanging out we will travel towards the lake via a smaller street maybe 11th or 13th. No one really gives us a problem. Also lived in printers row (river city) when I was younger, this is when south loop really wasn’t safe, but honestly we didn’t have much problems either. Look it’s a big city and crime is a reality, be aware of your surroundings, you’ll be fine.
How dangerous is Chicago for the average nigga who’s not involved in any bs?
I believe that shit dangerous frfr but I went to get food from margarita pizza on 79th and Marquette while I was visiting on vacation my uber driver left me while I was waiting on my food shit was straight but death is definitely in the air in Chicago
Drive around the Southside at midnight and see
Niggas not even safe inside a car? 😭😭😭 wtf
Aw well walk around and see or sit in a parked car for two hours wit the light on at night
It’s safe asl bro walk down 73rd king drive🙏🏽
just go downtown if you worried about ts, i be seeing tourists down there
That used to be true but it's certain areas now I would say anywhere past Roosevelt you good
Yeah Roosevelt a mf
Long as you a out the way not in the mix ass nigga you got nun to worry about 💯
Hi! I'm moving to chicago from a very small, safe suburb for work. I'm very concerned about safety. My work will be in the loop, so neighborhoods I'm considering are Near North Side, Near East, Side, Printer's Row, River North, South Loop, Streeterville, The Loop, and West Loop. From my preliminary research, it seems like all of these are relatively close to each other in safety, but would love to hear some thoughts. Thanks!
All considered top neighborhoods in Chicago so at this point it’s personal preference. If you are a runner, maybe live closer to the lake, if you are a foodie, live closer to west loop. Also, where exactly in the loop as in summer it’s a nice walk from your home, but in the brutal sloshy blizzard winner, you may want to think about public transport.
West Loop > River North > Streeterville > The Loop > South Loop
Just IMO. I wouldn’t recommend living directly in the Loop.
Will you need to walk/ride/CTA to work or are you driving?
>walk/ride/CTA
walk/ride/CTA
I feel if you need to get to loop safely and quickly daily, that south loop is your best bet.
What's your budget? Some of these places are more expensive than others.
I care a lot more about safety than budget, but I can pay up to $2100. Would prefer sticking around $1500 though.
Budget might be a little low for some of those areas. Even at $2100. Good Luck!
Depends on how you view safety. There is a moderate amount of crime downtown, but the sheer number of people in downtown areas drastically decreases the amount that it will specifically happen to you. That said, it'll still impact your life, assuming you go to restaurants, take CTA, navigate to friends' houses, etc.
All those neighborhoods are fine though. At this point it really depends on a few other things: commute, budget, and what you like to do in your spare time. I think there's a chance that moving from a very small suburb could be a big transition to one of the busiest areas of the country. Maybe check out each of the areas for a bit before moving?
what’s the safest neighborhood for a single woman to live in, close to downtown?
West town/west loop is pretty easy to get most places.
Lincoln park is great but public transit mostly relies on the bus as the L doesn’t make many convenient stops.
As for safe… it’s chicago. It’s more luck of the drawl. Chicago crime stats
Lincoln Park, Lakeview and the Loop but really you want to get a place where your commute to work is convenient and efficient. You would be fine in nearly any neighborhood if you aren’t walking alone on dark streets too much.
how’s west loop? i want a shorter commute (less than 20 min by transit) so lakeview and lincoln park aren’t on my radar
Lincoln park should absolutely be on your radar. If you live near the brown line your commute to the Loop is definitely less than 20 minutes. I commute from Bucktown by bus over to the brown line and my commute taking a bus and train is 25 minutes in the morning.
I'd recommend what others are saying and map it out by time of day. Distance alone is a terrible indicator of commute time during rush hour.
Depends on how you want to commute (car, train, bus, bike, walk?).
Of the lines, the brown line (goes north of the loop toward Lincoln Park and Lakeview) is one of the most reliable for timeliness and number of trains during high traffic hours. There's also many express buses that come from those areas to the loop in the morning.
I'm not as familiar with west loop transit options, I know driving over there is a nightmare, lots of biking infrastructure and buses though. Along with several transit lines (can't speak to their reliability).
It’s ok, depending.
You don’t get shorter transit time by minimizing your total commute distance though - it’s by minimizing the walking distance (from home and work) to the stations. The wait for a train at the station is the same for any station. So there are spots that are further away that are “just as close” measured in minutes.
Check out the interactive maps at mapnificent.net to see that.
Are you going to stay through the winter?
Sure those are three of the most affluent neighborhoods youll find. Even then, my girlfriends done some research and found that lakeview has a higher crime rate for SA and stuff like that than our own in hermosa, id imagine because of the bar scene, and drunk frat kids walking home from cubs games either committing or being a target for crime
If it was just about safety I’d have said Edison Park but she wanted close to the loop 🤷
What’s your budget?
2k for a studio
And honeslty are the police just really incompetent or is it just a big city. Obviously it’s still dangerous, but how’s the crime rate and is it a safe city to live in if I’m not in the hood?
Chicago is safe..long as u not tryna be in the bs. That shit only a small portion of chicago. It's neighborhood in Chicago that don't shit happen in then some thats terrible
Bro it’s way more dangerous now than 2012 lmao, after 2016 the murder rates started to get much higher, in 2012 niggas wasn’t outside trying to slide with cars full of niggas with automatic switches 💀
The murder rate from 2024 was slightly higher than its 2012 rate
Cops are too lax, you got chicks twerking on squad cars, folks blocking ambulances and talking shit to cops. Morning has changed except being more brazent
There’s violence but Chicago is like the 3rd most populated city in the U.S. so it’s gonna have crime but it is safe.

I have some family moving up there during the summer. I've heard about a few shootings around that area and on the rise of gun violence, will they be okay? I believe they are moving to the lower west side .
The lower west side is becoming so nice that the big issue is gentrification, not crime. That said, crime can happen and some basic precautions help.
Lock doors. Lock bikes. Invest in good lighting. Be especially careful after midnight. Watch out for con artists. Ask a neighbor to pick up mail and packages if you are out of town or notify the post office. Get to know your neighbors and watch strangers.
Every hour with these posts I swear. Can we get a sticky or an automod or something?
Btw, yes. All 10 million of us are robbed and shot at least once a week. It’s why we all chose to live here.
I was shot 3 times on the way to work today, but not robbed. Though I do also think I was stabbed. You really can never tell what kind of day it will be!
Yesterday there were these flying monkeys that kept attacking me, must be because of the humidity idk.
Seriously mods...
Unless they join a gang or start selling drugs illegally, their odds of being shot are pretty dang low.
Yes. Its a big city and there's bound to be crime because of that but for the most part it's safe. Chicago is not even in the top 10 most violent cities in the country.
If mods are listening, we should probably pin a "Is Chicago Safe FAQ" so we don't get this question multiple times a day.
Seconded, mods can we just filter all these out? It’s always the same question.
Really?
