What Redditors are Saying

Shane's Favorite Gift in Stardew Valley

TL;DR Shane loves receiving hot peppers and pizza as gifts [4:1].

Gift Preferences

Shane has a few favorite gifts that players can give him to increase his friendship level. Hot peppers and pizza are particularly appreciated by Shane, and giving these items can significantly improve your relationship with him [4:1][4:3]. These gifts align well with his character, as he often mentions enjoying frozen pizza and eggs [4:12].

Character Development

Many players appreciate Shane's character development throughout the game. His story involves overcoming personal struggles, including depression and alcohol use, which makes his growth through heart events quite impactful [2:5][4:9]. Some players find it rewarding to see Shane's transformation and enjoy the narrative of helping him through his difficulties [5:8][5:9].

Blue Chickens

One unique aspect of befriending Shane is the chance to obtain blue chickens. After reaching a certain friendship level with him, players can buy chickens from Marnie, with a chance that they will be blue [2:4][2:7]. This feature adds an interesting twist to the gameplay and is a fun reward for those who choose to build a strong relationship with Shane.

Despite some criticisms about his behavior post-marriage, many players still find him endearing and appreciate his journey [2:2][5:5]. Mods are available to enhance his character further, making interactions more dynamic and addressing some of the issues players have noted [2:3].

Cute!!

The last time I had the winter feast event Elliot was my secret gift giver.... this dude literally rolled out of bed, realized he needed to give me a gift, and just picked a damn nautilus shell off the beach on his way to the event...

No I’m not salty about it at all

My fave!! ❤️ (although I do think mods are needed to make marriage with him less depressing since he forgets his entire journey and starts drinking again). But he was my first ever and always fave spouse.

Also - I know recovery is complicated and dynamic. But we don't get that either - it's just like a sudden regression. I think it would be fine for him to have good and bad days, more bad days the worse your relationship is. But almost every day talking about beer is too much 😭 also why does beer remain a loved gift??

And for his 14 heart event, I wish there was more of an opportunity to defend him and trust him, the game kinda forces you to say you doubt him. 😭 Oh well

Mods for sure, I know immersive but I saw a new one recently that’s like immersive but also fixes the 14 heart event so you can side with Shane/not doubt him

You can get a blue chicken after you become friends with him - if you buy a chicken from Marnie afterwards, there's a chance it's blue.

i literally can't bring myself to gift him beer after knowing about his alcoholism. i know it's just a pixelated character in a game, but it just feels wrong to me. 😭 i'll either drop the money on a pizza from gus at the start of the game or grow peppers for him during summer instead.

TBH i'm probably the one taking it too seriously, it's just how i ended up playing the game. i don't think it's some kind of moral failing if other players give him beer. i do agree with others that beer should've been changed to a disliked or hated gift after shane's first 7th heart event, tho. it'd make more sense narrative-wise, ( and possible to implement since i know some mods do. )

About Shane...

Posted by ImpalaGirl67 · in r/StardewValley · 5 months ago

So this is my first playthrough ever in Stardew Valley and I just couldn't understand why so many people loved Shane. I really hated him at first, just bothered giving him presents to achieve perfection. Also I was so determined about romancing Harvey or Elliot, but then Shane's cutscenes and dialogues started to get so cute and at first I thought it was my saviour complex but he truly is just so sweet with all the taking care of Jas and weird obsession with chickens. Anyways, he's now my boyfriend lol. So who's you favourite dateable npc and why?

I love Elliot as a husband. He's really sweet and I love his writings.

I also love Shane and his character development. But I hate that when you marry him, his room is still a mess despite seeing his growth. I hope ConcernedApe change that.

Shane’s storyline is not talked about enough!

Posted by NoireAstral · in r/StardewValley · 16 days ago

One thing I really appreciate for Shane’s story line is that it presents hard topics to the player. At first when I started talking to him he wanted nothing to do with me! So of course I wanted him to love me xD

On a more serious note I appreciated that his story line is super complex and makes the game feel so relatable. It’s hard to keep going sometimes especially if you battle with mental health stuff. He’s a good example that things can and will get better. It won’t always be so hard. Having help and support from loved ones is life saving.

Also on a side note, I love that he unlocked the blue chickens!!

Shane has a really good story arc, but I do think he’s better off with the farmer as a friend than a spouse. My guy needs some time to work through his mental health stuff, not a relationship.

189 upvotes on reddit
B
bakersdozing · 16 days ago

Yeah, while it's great that a relationship with the farmer truly helps him recover, that isn't the reality for many people with depression. Love isn't usually a magical fix for mental health problems, and people shouldn't expect it to be.

I still like Shane, and I enjoyed the times that I've romanced him.

48 upvotes on reddit
Srawsome · 16 days ago

I love it because of how realistic it is. He is never magically cured but the farmer does help convince him to seek help. So he spends the rest of the game working on himself.
That's just how it is. We never recover from depression, but we can learn to deal with it.
