What Redditors are Saying

Reviews of Terraforming Mars Expansion

TL;DR Terraforming Mars is highly regarded for its replayability and strategic depth, especially with expansions like "Prelude" which enhance the game experience. However, it may not be visually appealing to some players and can start slow [5:1][5:2].

Replayability and Game Evolution

Terraforming Mars is praised for its capacity to become a hobby within a hobby, particularly in fixed groups where players get familiar with possible interactions over time. The game evolves as players learn more about the strategies and dynamics, making it a staple in many gaming circles. The expansion "Prelude" is considered essential by some players, indicating that it significantly enhances the gameplay experience [5:1].

Game Mechanics and Strategy

As a Euro-style game, Terraforming Mars focuses on resource generation and card combinations to score points. It is known for being a longer game that starts slowly but builds into a complex strategy experience. While it has less direct player interaction compared to other games, it offers deep strategic planning and resource management [5:2][5:7].

Visual Appeal and Accessibility

Some players find Terraforming Mars less visually appealing, which might affect their enjoyment of the game. Despite this, its strategic depth often compensates for any perceived lack of aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the game is available on platforms like Board Game Arena (BGA), allowing potential buyers to test it before purchasing [5:2].

Comparison with Other Games

When compared to other games like Arcs and Dune: Imperium, Terraforming Mars stands out for its strategic complexity and replayability. However, some players prefer the more recent mechanics and intense competition found in Arcs [5:2][5:3]. Each game offers unique experiences depending on what players are looking for, whether it's strategic depth or dynamic interaction.

Overall, Terraforming Mars is recommended for players who enjoy deep strategy and evolving gameplay, especially when enhanced with expansions.

As you can see in the second picture, the ITV has been modified by adding a more powerful propulsion stage, I have refuelled it but a more powerful rocket is required, I request one from anyone of you:)

Hebeth is Mars, just like half a billion years ago. A lot can change on a planet in 500 million years.

But if it's been that long then how would like the betrayer be alive. Yes I understand it is probably because he was in hell but wouldn't the maykrs have probably done a lot more of that was the amount of time between these

What would the Makyrs have done in that time? I'm unsure of what you mean?

After/Before/During (not told) the Dark Ages, at some point, the Maykrs make a secret deal with hell: Hell gives the Maykrs refined argent energy (wich empowers their own realm, and preventes maykrs from dying), and the makyrs ensure Hell can travel to other dimensions so they can consume them and reap souls. Part of those reaped souls are transfored into argent. At this point, the Maykrs and some sentinels ambush the still pure Sentinels in hell, and leave them stuck here. Dommguy is also stuck here, but thats where he wants to be, so no biggie.

Now even MORE furious he begins a multi-million (maybe billion) year rampage through hell. Unbreakeable, Incorruptable, Unyelding he kills every demon in his path, sending multiple demon types into extinction, and sending most of the rest into hiding. Eventually the desperate demons lay a trap and drop an entire temple on him, just to stop him. He is entombed in a sarcophagus, for several more Eons, while hell recovers and consumes dimension after dimension, for millions of years (maybe billions).

After these billions, Earth is now populated by descendents of Sentinels. Earth goes to mars, and the UAC in this reality also develops teleportation tecnology, which once again opens a rift into mars.
From this come some demons (they take a while to ramp up their invasion), but also Samur Mayker, who posseses A human, gives him brain cancer by accident, and then uploads his mind into the metal body we know (Doom 2016). At this point things go downhill FAST, a human is seduced by hell to open the gate fully (Olivia) the poop hits the ventilator and Doom 2016 starts. Doomguy is not impressed at all at what happened and goes back to what he does best: Rip and Tear.
After cleaning up UACs mess (AGAIN), Samuel/Samu traps him, steals his crucible (an infinite source of energy) and sends him back to parts unknown (probably hell, where he likes it. Its warm and has demons.)

Samur wants to save the new sentinels/humans/humanity. He knows hell is coming so moves to provide earth with infinite energy (his goal also in doom2016, he knew hell invasion was not going to stop), and advanced weaponry to defend from the demons. Thats why in Eternal there are big mechs resembling the TDA/Sentinel mechs.

Doomguys fucks off to hell and somehow gets the spaceship/building we see in the beggining of Eternal.
The demons launch a massive invasion of earth with earth forces putting up a gigantic struggle but eventually getting routed. this begins Eternal.

After destroying heaven and the Maykrs (for their part in the unholy alliance between heaven and hell), and destroying the Icon of Sin (YET AGAIN), He goes to resurrect Samuel. (The ElderGods) After getting his real (maykr) body, samu starts dying and doomguy goes to help him. Eventually reaching God, which has been "killed" and reduced to an essencial Orb. The devil (Davoth) is also reduced to an orb, in the same sacred place.
Doomguy KILL god's essencial orb (basically killing him dead-dead). At this point we understand the voice in the suit, the AI is actually a sort of backup of god. His mind, his knowledge and personality but no power.
This was actually the devils plan all along: Infuse doomguy with his power, and have him destroy the maykers, heaven and god. But......

Doomguy takes the devil's essence and eventually executes his own plan: Resurrect the Devil to kill him properly and definitely this time.

Side note: The devil (davoth) is actually the creator of the universe. God was one of his lieutenants that rebelled when Davoth went mad trying to make his creations immortal. God killed the devil, and imprisioned his essence in the orb. At some point he learned the Maykrs (HIS lieutenants) were going to do the same to him, and asked Samur to put him in an orb, so we could survive. Doomguy just got tired of gods screwing everything and everyone, so he just screwed them for a change. He is subtle like that.

After the deed was done, All demons outside of hell die, and doomguy looses his powers/ is deactivated / faints and is put back in the sarcophagus.

Sorry for typos and things, I just typed this whole thing out the top of my head.

TDA Hebeth, and 2016/Eternal Mars is the same planet in the same dimension, but separated by unknown eons. This also implies that 2016/Eternal Earth humans are descended from Argent D'Nur humans.

25 upvotes on reddit
BoldStrategy0 · 8 days ago

From what I understand, after Doom 64 DOOMGUY stayed in hell for a very long time. When he came out of hell to Argent D’nur he is now in an alternate reality, where Mars is called Hebeth. He has his time with the night sentinels and is eventually trapped in the sarcophagus. When he wakes up in Doom 2016, a ton of time has passed. The descendants of Argent D’nur settled on Earth and eventually the UAC makes their base on Mars.

It’s like the alternate reality of the new games is further back in time than the reality he came from in the original games.

I may be wrong. It doesn’t make a lot of sense

Estou em dúvida entre Arcs, terraforming mars e Dune: Imperium

Posted by fofinhaozinho · in r/tabuleiros · 11 days ago

1 upvotes on reddit
Ordinary-Nickname · 10 days ago

Brass Birmingham or Terraforming Mars?

Posted by KHartnettC · in r/boardgames · 15 days ago

About to drop ~$70 on new game. I am torn between these two.

Background. Just my wife and I playing (we have no friends). Play MTG all the time, Pandemic is a favorite. We tend to get bored with simple games. So we are debating between these two.

Thanks EVERYONE for the thoughtful inputs and suggestions. I am going to get Brass based on what everyone said. I really appreciate this community and everyone taking the time!

I love terraforming mars, the engine building is so satisfying and it plays really well with two - but I highly recommend getting the prelude expansion at the same time because a 2p game can take 3-4 hours without it. Brass is alot more complex though, but a very different type of crunchy game.

Never had such a long Terraforming game, at least not one where I didn't teach it to someone.

Most games are now over after 45-85 minutes for us, and at first it was about 2 hours.

We do not own prelude, we somehow just never bought any expansion for this game, besides the big box.

We might not be as smart as you, with 2 players our games used to be close to 150-180 minutes minutes (first game took about about 4 hours.) The early game is really slow and prelude speeds it up, so for 2 it takes about 120 minutes now. It takes alot longer and more generations to terraform the planet with only 2. I can do 90-120 minutes with 4-5 players same as on the side or the box

Community Poll Part .. 9? Skaven were fun! + feedback. What should I play next?

Posted by Commando_Schneider · in r/totalwarhammer · 20 days ago
post image

Feedback is simply. I didnt use 90% of the roster.
I came for the MGs and I wanted to use them! xD

Ikit is funny, the jezzrails are super good, the MGs... are MGs.
The shit thrower is a nice early tier unit. The mortar is ... nice, because its the best arty the skavens got imo, but not really.. worth it.
The railguns were the unit I really want to try and... man are they shit. You get 10 times more worth out of another jezzrail unit.
The melee stuff.. is melee stuff. I dont play ikit to build melee.
And yeah... muuuch I didnt build.

To the faction itself ... yeah I didnt use 70% of the upgrades as well. Was ... so wasted imo, to have so many upgrades for the wheels, if the range guys are the attraction.
The nuke ... I'm... split at it. Its cool and strong, but its most of the time super wasted. Didnt throw it most of the time, because I didnt got into a situation where I thought "alright, lets go for it."
Eco is strong, corruption is super annoying. You cant get other corruption out of your land at a noteworthy pace and your own corruption isnt that useful.
Oh and shout out to another cult/undercity mechanic being absolute useless. Most buildings are completely shit and useless, with a far to high detection malus. The building that tells you "got 10% chance to spread" NEEDS to be lying. After 70 turns, I got a single additional under city in the elve territory. The "skaven corruption" these building emit is so fucking small, that you could delete it from the get to.
Under cities are a waste of time, imo. The only worthwhile building are the ones on the far right anyway.
(P.S. 15 turns for the "I raze your settlement" building is something you can do, but.. shouldnt.)

I really dislike ikits starting position... its so.. bad and imo doesnt match the narration as well, as if he was back in Lustria. The campaign itself felt a big sloggy, with all the mountains, the 100 WE factions etc etc. Also the maps you get are... ass for Ikit. You constantly fight in super foresty maps, that is absolute shit for your wheels and your range (a bit like bretonnia). The maps did annoy me quite a bit, I need to admit.
And it was this campaign, were I REALLY noticed the shitty diplo and AI behaviour. 70% of the factions didnt do shit, after they got a bit of land. Diplo is a one sided sword, where you get all the shit, if you break a treaty, but the AI is allowed to declare war 2 turn after peace.

At the end .... the start of the campaign was more fun, than the end. Not being really able to confed other faction members, the shitty start location and maps did sour the campaign a bit for me, after a bit.

Feel free to tell me, how I missed stuff again, because I ignored most of the roster. I'm always open for a nice discussion. ^^

Soo what should I play next?

I am a huge Skaven player and I have a couple small notes for you based on your takeaway.

Mostly pointing to two main things: the artillery and the undercity. For the artillery, actually the plagueclaw catapult is their best. It is the lowest tech, but it honestly outperforms the lightning cannon pretty convincingly as well as applying a debuff that lowers leadership for a while on units hit, so they are even easier to route.

As for the undercity, there are a few useful ways to build it. One big thing is to build undercities in all of the highest profit cities in the game (Marionberg, Lothern, etc.) and build the building that gives you a percentage of the income. It can also be used to gain functionally infinite food once you have a few of them by making the food building in them. My Main 4 building strategy is an income building, the food building, the spread undercity building, and then the deep tunnels building to keep your discovery low. It will allow you to just continually make more money and food over time.|

And I guess as for corruption, pretty much every skaven building either has uncorrupted or skaven corruption so you can pretty much just completely ignore it and just owning the territory will increase it. But it doesn't do too much other than make it slightly more annoying for enemies to take your cities.

11 upvotes on reddit
Commando_Schneider · OP · 20 days ago

I mean ... the plagueclaw are better than the trebuchet of britonnia and honest, I ranked them wrong. The warp lighting arty should be last. Cool concept, but absolutely shit. What a shame.

I mean, yeah I got that part from the undercities and it would be good ... if you dont play Skaven. Skavens eco is strong, making me 50k per round, in the turn I won. I dont need to wait for 30 turns, to get a special hero, to start a cult somewhere, where I dont want to conquer.

0 upvotes on reddit
BrobiWanKinobe · 19 days ago

That is fair. Honestly the biggest thing for me is that you can get a ton of food every turn from your undercities, which allows you to settle province capitals at tier 4-5 without too much trouble. But I do agree that it definitely could be a more interesting and useful mechanic than it currently is.

And yeah the plagueclaw seem like they would be worst, but boy howdy.... they always get so many kills every time compared to any other catapult type units in the game. Obviously there are better artillery, but they get the job done, even just having one makes a big difference due to the way the AI treats artillery.

If your army has artillery and the AI does not, they will charge you. They won't do that if it is the other way around.

And I guess last little note that is more out of curiosity - did you build the death wind mortar regiment of renown? The pink mortar instead of the green ones? Because I honestly think that is the singular best unit in the game for just mass casulties. It does magical armor-piercing flak mortars that just absolutely shred anything they hit.

You definitely missed out on some fun parts of the roster! Death globe bombardier have short range but their grenades melt enemy units. And wolf rats ARE terrible but when you put them in clan moulder and they’ll melt through back lines getting hundreds of kills. And skaven monsters are just cool. They’re not amazing, they get the job done. But they’re cool

I've been finding it really tough to build the kinds of structures I envision in the game because we're missing some fundamental building blocks. Things like scaffolding frames, proper building columns, pillars, and beams would make a huge difference.

Also minor nitpick but the existing wooden foundations and frame walls just don't cut it for creating realistic or interesting designs, and the columns we have can't even be placed freely. I often want to build things like cozy cabin bases, "put together" settlements with visible supports, or even sci-fi inspired brutalist structures, but the current options make everything look too basic and square. It really limits my creativity, forcing me into very minimalist designs when I want to build something truly innovative and architecturally sound, especially with the new load-bearing system we have!

I'm often unable to create specific desired structures such as supported bridges, cabins with visible roof beams, decks with diagonal supports, or rustic, "scrappy" builds. Adding these components would allow for more innovative, architecturally sound, and aesthetically pleasing structures that would also integrate well with the game's new load-bearing system.

I'd like to see more apocalyptic items to build with. Safety in your home should be a need not an after thought.

there are pillars and they do help with support, but yes cross beam options would be great, as would the rest of the missing shapes in the building sets

Terraforming Mars + Everything: Ultimate Storage Solution!

Hey, everyone! I'm the guy behind TrayMaster, the designer and producer of the world's best inserts for complex board games. After months of hard work, I am proud to announce our latest major product: the ultimate insert for Terraforming Mars + Everything.

This insert is meant to be used with the official Big Box. When I say that it fits everything, I mean everything! If it's an official game product for Terraforming Mars, there is a place for it in the insert—without needing the Big Box Extension!

Everything that currently exists for TM in the Big Box

Here is the full list of what the insert holds: TM Base Game, Hellas & Elysium Board, Amazonis & Vastitas Board, Utopia & Cimmeria Board, Venus Next, Colonies, Prelude, Turmoil, Prelude 2, Milestones & Awards, Automa, 3D Tiles, Amazonis Planitia 3D Tiles, City Domes, Dual Layer Player Boards, Metal Cubes, Green Metallic Cubes, Alternate Color Plastic Player Cubes, Rover First Player Marker, Upgraded Trade Fleets (with room for custom trade fleets), All Promo Cards (with room for dozens more), Sleeve Set, Prelude 2 Sleeve Set, and the Automa Sleeve Set.

The 3D tiles are stored in four separate bins, each with a lid to keep the tiles securely in place.

The four card holder bins have removable dividers, allowing the option of storing expansions cards separately or together with the base cards.

Cards are intended to be sleeved with the official TM sleeves, or sleeves of a similar thickness.

Prelude, Global Events, Corporations, and Automa Decks

Each player has a bin for player cubes, and the two resource bins can be placed at opposite ends of the table within reach of all players.

Resource Bins (for plastic or metal) & Player Cube Bins

Another bin holds all small boards and instructions. This includes the Dual Layer Player Boards along with the original Player Boards, the Turmoil Committee Board with overlay, the Venus Next Tiles, and instructions booklets for the base game and all expansions.

Small Boards, Tiles, & Instructions

Two smaller bins hold various game markers (original and upgraded) and Milestones & Awards.

The Colonies bin is sized to fit all the mini-boards with their overlays. It also has designated storage for the original trade fleets, upgraded trade fleets, and even a compartment for custom trade fleets, should you have them.

The fourteen overlays are perfectly sized to snap on to the Turmoil Committee Board and Colonies mini-boards.

Overlays for Turmoil Committee and Colonies

The Turmoil bin includes a removable Delegate bin, with additional storage for the five alternate colors of delegates.

Finally, there are several bins for deprecated components—alternate color player cubes, original plastic resources, original cardboard tiles, and outdated cards / card dividers. These bins are meant to be placed at the bottom of the box, as they will not see much use. Alternatively, you may use these bins to store miscellaneous custom components that you may have collected.

Fryx Games has announced that they are working on a campaign for Terraforming Mars. If and when this or any other new products are released, there will be plenty of room for an add-on to this insert, making use of the additional space from the Big Box Extension. However, as said above, everything currently available for TM fits in the Big Box without the Extension.

Terraforming Mars: Ultimate Insert for the Big Box

You can check out this insert and many others at TrayMaster.us or on our Etsy store. Due to high demand right now, orders may take a few extra days, but we are usually able to deliver ahead of the projected timeline.

NOTE: We do not release or sell STL files—there is too much risk in putting them online. Thank you for understanding.

And I was hoping that somebody is selling something that includes a standalone box for TM based on the headline, not just another organizer.

You will never fit the campaign in the same box, it’s a whole new game with new sets of cards, new expanded player boards, several new maps, loads of new stuff.

You may be right. We’ll see when it comes out.

Terraforming Mars expansion reviews

Key Considerations for Terraforming Mars Expansions:

  1. Types of Expansions:

    • Big Box Expansions: These include Terraforming Mars: Prelude, Terraforming Mars: Colonies, and Terraforming Mars: Turmoil. Each adds new mechanics and depth to the base game.
    • Small Expansions: These often introduce new project cards or corporations, such as Terraforming Mars: Venus Next and Terraforming Mars: Hellas & Elysium.
  2. Gameplay Impact:

    • Expansions can significantly alter gameplay dynamics. For example, Prelude introduces new starting conditions, while Colonies adds a new board and mechanics for trade and colonization.
  3. Complexity Level:

    • Some expansions increase the complexity of the game. If you prefer a streamlined experience, consider starting with smaller expansions before diving into the larger ones.
  4. Player Interaction:

    • Certain expansions enhance player interaction. For instance, Turmoil introduces political elements that can affect all players, making the game more competitive.
  5. Community Feedback:

    • Check reviews on platforms like BoardGameGeek for player experiences. Many players appreciate the added depth and variety that expansions bring, but some may feel they complicate the game unnecessarily.

Recommendations:

  • Best Overall Expansion: Terraforming Mars: Prelude is highly recommended for its ability to enhance the starting experience without overwhelming new players.
  • For Strategic Depth: Terraforming Mars: Colonies is great if you enjoy trade mechanics and want to expand the game's strategic options.
  • For Increased Player Interaction: Terraforming Mars: Turmoil is ideal if you want a more competitive atmosphere with political elements.

Ultimately, the best expansion for you will depend on your play style and what aspects of the game you enjoy most!
