TL;DR The MCU timeline is complex, involving movies, one-shots, TV shows, and multiverse elements. Key events include Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man series, Avengers films, and recent Phase 4 and 5 projects.
MCU Core Timeline
The core timeline of the MCU starts with Captain America: The First Avenger, set during World War II, followed by Iron Man and its sequels [2]. The timeline continues with major films like Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and Avengers. Each film builds upon the previous ones, with interconnected plots and character arcs. For instance, Iron Man 2 is set six months after Iron Man, leading up to the events of The Avengers
[1:3].
Integration of TV Shows and One-Shots
TV shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and one-shots such as Agent Carter are integrated into the timeline, though they often exist in semi-canon status due to their loose connections with the main films [1:2]. Agent Carter follows the post-war activities of Peggy Carter, while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aligns with events from various MCU films, particularly those involving S.H.I.E.L.D.
[4:2].
Phase 4 and 5 Developments
Recent developments in Phase 4 and 5 introduce new characters and storylines, including Black Widow, WandaVision, and Loki [4:1]. These projects expand the universe further, exploring themes like the multiverse and alternate timelines. Loki, for example, operates outside the traditional timeline due to its setting in the TVA
[3:1].
Multiverse and Alternate Timelines
The introduction of the multiverse complicates the timeline further, incorporating films from different studios, such as the X-Men series [5:1]. Days of Future Past creates an altered timeline for the X-Men universe, affecting subsequent films like Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix
[5:2]. This integration highlights the expansive nature of the MCU and its ability to incorporate diverse narratives.
Fan Contributions and Theories
Fans have contributed significantly to understanding the MCU timeline, creating detailed graphics and theories [1:1]
[5:5]. These efforts help clarify the chronological order and provide insights into how different elements fit together. Fan theories, such as the impact of cosmic events on character changes, showcase the creativity within the community
[5:6].
You mean MCU + marvel TV shows (which movies or Feige does not care and probably going to retcon) right .
Yes. In my mind, the colors actually separate the canon (movies in red, one-shot in orange and future Disney+ shows in Yellow, and probably WHIH News in pink and Agent Carter in grey) from the semi-canon (everything else).
However:
It's also probable that following Morbius, we'll learn that there is some kind of connection with the Sony universe, but waiting for this, Venom stays out this timeline.
Here’s the timeline in uncompressed, full size: https://imgit.org/i/2020/03/17/Zpa.png
A few months back, I started to get interested in the timeline of the MCU – and quickly realized how messy it was. In my research, I stumbled on some timelines infographics, but all were either old or not detailed enough. Then, I started to work on my own, one piece at a time.
I used timeline lists, such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe Media List, the amazing work of DIrishB and the incredible day-by-day details on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki. These have been of huge help.
I’m well aware that this timeline includes flaws – such as inconsistencies in the MCU itself (cf. Agents of Shield S6 or Runaways S3) – and that some of you won’t agree with the placement of some dates. I tried to respect the works done before the best I could.
If I’d do it again, I’d increase the width and reduce the height of it (rather than "2 pixels large = 1 day"), for it to be more readable by zooming it. However, I don’t have the faith nor the time of doing that right now.
Fury’s big week doesn’t work within the movies. Thor 1 takes place a heat before avengers, per Avengers, and in Civil War (in 2016) Iron Man has been a hero for eight years. IM2 takes place very explicitly six months after IM1 in July. If you end to DM me, Id be happy to talk more. Most of your Netflix placements seem good, up until defenders, which is quite rare to see.
Cool graphic. I disagree with a lot of the MCU wiki’s placements, but it’s sort of a matter of opinion. You should see if you could send this to the mods on the wiki.
I'll try that!
I chuckled at "I Want Your Cray-Cray" being singled out like that.
Yeah haha, that kind of bummed me out just ro have to add the 2005 year for one episode. But the timeline wouldn't have been complete otherwise...

This is the ultimate chronological order to watch everything in. I have the exact same list I go through on my MCU rewatch, but I move Captain America The First Avenger to after Thor. Technically the film takes place in 2011-2012 (before the Avengers) with the bulk of the film essentially being a flashback. But that's me getting really technical.
Venom (2) is said to be 1 and a half years after venom (1) venom (2) is during November 2024 scince all venom 2, no way home, and venom 3 span a few days to a week Venom 2022 spring San Fransisco Venom 2022 fall no snow san Fransisco Venom 2 2024 spring/summer ? Venom 2 2024 fall November No way home 2024 fall Nov Venom 3 2024 fall Nov
Madame Web = 2007 summer Venom = 2022 spring - fal Venom (2) = 2024 spring/summer - fall Venom (3) = 2024 fall Morbius = 2024 fall (I haven't watched kraven yet so not including him)
Into the Spider-verse is 2038 scince Peter B parker is from earth 616B the Tom Holland Spiderman earth branch dimension Born 2001 aug Bitten 2016 at classic age 15 Spiderman for 22 years meaning he's 37 in 2038 spider verse (1) And 38 in spider verse (2) 2039 This is a future time of a branch of earth 616 MCU branch with no heroes except Spiderman and/ Spiderman related heroes
> Madame Web = 2007 summer
2003, there's an onscreen caption.
> Into the Spider-verse is 2038
2018, we can read it on the gravestone.
2003 for the SSU is 2008 for the mcu because Venom 2 is set in 2019 and they get transported to the MCU which is in 2024 meaning that the difference is 5 years
Wasn't thinking of timeline when made into the Spider-verse just like 2020 is referenced in across the Spider-verse causing timeline errors
Yeah well mayby the production crew was thinking of the timeline when they made it .but how I'm saying it is the only way it makes sense .the 2018 gravestone is a visual error (not at the time but yeah) like the Spiderman homecoming "10 years later caption at the start For madame web sorry it's been a while since I watched it mayby it does have the caption 2003 or not I don't know
The Gifted can kind a work in canon, if you slot it in after The Wolverine.
But it’s X-Men it ain’t perfect.
This is just wrong on so many levels, for example you should watch some of the X-Men movies before the Deadpool&Wolverine.
Yeah just scroll down
I dont see how its wrong..
A few notes:
And a couple nitpicks:
Thank you
Hi gang, it's been a minute since I updated my MCU timelines!
I am aware this is not EXACTLY chronologically accurate, but I think it is much more enjoyable to watch it all this way balancing credit scene foreshadowing with chronology.
Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments though! I update these regularly.

Absolutely same here
Netflix shows were greathoping they move into MCU
REALLY rooting for Daredevil in No Way Home, I guess we will find out soon enough!!
I find it funny that Magneto and Professor X looked perpetually young for like 30 years then aging caught up like a mother
Two different timelines... so I guess in the new timeline they just were a lot better at maintaining a decent skincare regime
Loki is more like happening all at once. TVA being out of the flow of timeline, Kang in end of time and all of that.
I actually totally agree. Loki doesn’t really work in a timeline format whatsoever. 🤷🏼
Hey Reddit!
I have been doing a lot of research to compile a full list of the MCU films and shows including one shots, netflix shows, and extended marvel projects in timeline order and would love some feedback as it’s nearly impossible to get information that’s not conflicting. This is what I have.
Timeline (Chronological Order)
Marvel Legacy: X‑Men / Wolverine Timeline (Non‑MCU Continuity)
Multiverse‑Adjacent / Non‑Canon (unless officially tied in)
Upcoming / In Development MCU Projects (Still TBA)
I think this is not bad overall, but see a few things: 1) Based on the rules laid down in Endgame, there should probably be multiple earths/timelines for the X-Men films (not to mention that even without Endgame rules, they conflict with one another). 2) Team Darryl short - pretty sure that's non-canon, as IIRC it conflicts with Thor's actual whereabouts. Though I realize Darryl had a cameo in, I think it was T:L&T. 3) I haven't seen Agents of Shield, but wasn't it confirmed to not be in the main 616 timeline/universe, again due to contradictions?
i struggle a lot trying to stay on track while watching the x films, they probably would have multiple earths and timelines but i am not sure where to begin labeling them. when i look up the films individually, i usually get earth-10005, but if you have a better understanding of how i would go about labeling that, i would appreciate it! the team darryl one shot i believe was after t:l&t so it probably doesn’t go after ragnorak as thanos took over their ship and thor then had to be rescued by the guardians. agents of shield mostly follows phil coulson after the events of the first avengers movie so i believe that is the same universe.
> I haven't seen Agents of Shield, but wasn't it confirmed to not be in the main 616 timeline/universe, again due to contradictions?
There may have been an announcement I'm unaware of, but there are no contradictions.
Post this at r/MCU_Timeline the folks there should give you some good feedback, and aren’t often incorrect with their nitpicks
Where is inhumans
My previous comments were focused on the inclusion of non-Canon stuff, but said inclusion wasn't the only thing wrong with this timeline, as there are several Phase 4 and Phase 5 projects that are placed incorrectly.
The timeline for Phases 4 and 5 needs to be as follows (projects from previous phases listed in parentheses)
* (Captain America: Civil War)
* Black Widow
* Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
* (Spider-Man: Homecoming)
* (Avengers: Endgame)
* WandaVision
* Loki Season 1
* Loki Season 2
* What If...? Season 1
* What If...? Season 2
* What If...? Season 3
* Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
* The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
* (Spider-Man: Far From Home)
* Spider-Man: No Way Home
* Eternals
* Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
* Hawkeye
* Moon Knight
* Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
* Echo
* She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
* Secret Invasion
* Ms. Marvel
* The Marvels
* Ironheart
* Thor: Love and Thunder
* The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
* Werewolf By Night
* Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania
* Guardians of the Vol. 3
* Captain America: Brave New World
* Daredevil: Born Again
* Agatha All Along
* Thunderbolts/The New Avengers
The X-Men Timeline has errors as well and should be as follows:
* X-Men: First Class
* X-Men Origins: Wolverine
* X-Men
* X2: X-Men United
* X-Men: The Last Stand
* The Wolverine
* X-Men: Days of Future Past
* X-Men: Apocalypse
* X-Men: Dark Phoenix
* Deadpool
* Deadpool 2
* Deadpool and Wolverine
* Logan
* The New Mutants
Also worth noting: if Deadpool and Wolverine were to be placed on the MCU Phase 4 and 5 timeline, it would go after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Hey everyone!
For ages, I've been completely obsessed with the massive, sprawling world of Marvel movies, just like many of you. But as the Multiverse opened up and brought in everything, I found myself constantly asking: how does it all truly fit together chronologically? It's not just the MCU anymore; it's decades of films from different studios, all featuring characters we love.
I know tons of incredibly smart people in this fandom have tackled timelines before (and seriously, kudos to all that work!), but I've poured countless hours into this project over the years. My goal was to build what I believe is the most comprehensive, in-universe chronological timeline of every single theatrical Marvel movie ever released. Yes, every single one! From the original Blade to the latest multiversal craziness, I've tried to weave them all into one coherent story.
What makes this different? Well, I've even cooked up a fun in-universe theory to explain those tricky actor changes (looking at you, Rhodey and Bruce Banner!) by tying them to a specific cosmic event. It's a passion project, and I'm genuinely excited to finally share it with all of you.
Take a look, and let me know what you think.
Early Periods & Past Events (Pre-2000s)
Early 2000s Crossover Origins (Live-Action)
Early MCU & Remaining Connected Universes (Post-Cosmic Event)
Mid-Late MCU & Deepening Multiverse Connections
The Multiverse Saga Begins (MCU & Direct Crossovers - 2020s Onward)
So, what do you all think? Did I miss anything? Any films you think should be included or reordered based on this multiversal logic? I'm eager to hear your thoughts, theories, and any additions you might have.
Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix shouldn't be watch there. The original timeline has to happen first up until 2023 for these movies to happen
That's a really good point and a very common area of confusion with the Fox X-Men films! You're absolutely right that in terms of release order and how the story originally unfolded for viewers, the first X-Men trilogy happened before Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
However, for this timeline, I'm focusing purely on in-universe chronology. Days of Future Past (the 1973 portion) essentially created a new, altered timeline for the X-Men universe. Apocalypse (1983) and Dark Phoenix (1992) then chronologically follow the events of that altered 1973 period in this new timeline.
The original X-Men (2000) and its sequels then exist later in this same altered timeline, after the events of Dark Phoenix. The future events in Days of Future Past (2023) are part of the original timeline which the 1973 intervention was designed to prevent, leading to the new chronology.
It's definitely one of the trickiest parts to sequence, but that's how I've approached it for a strictly in-universe perspective! Thanks for bringing it up, as it's a great discussion point.
The original movies don't happen in the new timeline though
origins wolverine was late 1800s-1975
Love putting things in timeline order.
I’m confused by what you mean when you say Galactus’s defeat in Rise of the Silver Surfer provides the explanation for the actor changes. Can you elaborate on that?
Just a fan theory I came up with 15 years ago. In Rise if the Silver Surfer, Surfer causes Johnny's genetic structure to change and go into flux which makes him swap powers. It's also explained that it's the same (or similar) type of energy as the cloud that gave the Four (and Room) their powers.
So I took that and expanded on it, when Galactus explodes at the end of the movie, cosmic radiation is scattered across the planet's exosphere, which in my theory, caused certain peoples' physical appearances to change. Therefore tying the movies together.
That’s a pretty neat idea you have there. Probably a stretch, but the foundation for the concept is pretty sound
Bravo. You did a great job with that! Thanks for sharing.
I have a question: Now that Feige is the last word creatively on all things Marvel, would you consider revamping this if he starts decanonizing some/all of the Marvel Television projects?
That’s definitely the next step, if he decanonizes some of the shows. But technically these are all the currently officially canon titles. So I chose to keep em in.
I'm really glad you did! Seeing all of the logos listed out like that was really satisfying. And sorry if my intent wasn't clear. I was more asking in the sense of "You already put so much time and effort into this, so would you ever even consider updating it if Feige cuts out the shows he didn't make?" Does that make more sense?
Predicting the dissolution of Marvel TV, I also created a film-only, spoiler free version of said timeline. That explains about... 80 of those hours lol.
If the Marvel TV projects ever/ inevitably get confirmed to be non-canon/ soft-rebooted/ retconned, their timeline would probably be the same as it is now up until 2018.
Could probably be treated as their own separate Earth. Maybe Earth-19999999998
I love you guys, and I love your videos. But I will die on the "Cloak and Dagger is in 2017" hill.
I can’t deny you that right. I understand. [Edit] the reason we have it placed in 2015 is simply that they mention in the first season that it occurs 8 years after 2007. They mention this 8 times in the first season. And the second season features a newspaper that occurs at the tail end of the first season of Luke Cage.
It’d be cool if you did individual vids for the Marvel TV projects like you did for the films.
It gets pretty tricky after 2016.
They did do one for C&D S1 (kinda), but as far as I'm aware, that was it.
Believe it or not, that was a ton of work. It would be much more work for the shows considering their length. But maybe one day.
By the by, is it ok if we crosspost this into the MCU show subs?
The final render on v5 took longer than both v6 and v6.5 (the video linked above) combined. Removing the clips from the background helped tremendously there. Believe it or not, to create the background with all the comics and make it look smooth took about 36 hours to render fully.
I’ve put together what I hope is a complete chronological watchlist for everything Marvel, including Sony’s and Fox's movies and the older Marvel films. There might still be some mistakes or missing pieces, but I thought I’d share it. Most of it is live-action except for the MCU cartoon shows

The X-Men movies that come after Days of Future Past are placed here instead of in strict chronological order, since that timeline would otherwise make no sense.

This timeline is separted by years. My reason for certian placements:
not every universe is in the same year. For example, 2019 for the SSU would be 2024 for the MCU. This is proven because as we know Venom 2 and Spider-Man No way Home are set around the same time, yet the years are different. That would mean that the difference is 5 years, which is why I did plus 5 for every SSU film, and it makes more sense because of crossovers that happen. The same can be said for the spider-verse films as the events of no way home are mentioned. For the Fantastic 4, it multiversally takes place in 2024 because in the end credits of thunderbolts, the fantastic 4 arrive and the end credit is set in 2028. in the end credit of fantastic 4 there is a 4 year time jump putting it in 1968 and we can assume this is when they travel to the mcu's 2028, and if we are only following one year system (which we are) that would put it to 2024
Isn't this a little bit confusing when you mix all the universes like that? I mean when you watch this its now im watching 199999 now 10005 now 96283 now 10005 again.
There are two major problems here:
Then, of course, there are the devils in the details:

Heads up, Thor, Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk all took place during the same week compared to being space apart. 'Fury's Big Week', There's also an Avenger's Prelude comic of the same name.
it’s kinda hard to include the non mcu spidey films and what if into a date because they are all technically branch timelines. u can give the spidey movies the same dates just in splintered timelines i guess but u can’t box what if into just 1 year like u did because each episode takes place in a different timeline at a different point in time entirely
Marvel already put what if in the timeline so it isn't hard to place lol
i’m saying you can’t say what if takes place in 2023. in one definitive point in the timeline. because each episode takes place in different times. the first episode took place 1942. the second episode took place 2014. the third episode took place 2010 etc. it’s not one point in time so saying it takes place in 2023 in the timeline makes zero sense
>they are all technically branch timelines
Steve/Peggy's ending and Loki would be a branched timelines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ASM and Raimi's Spider-Man films take place in their own respective universes, seperate to the MCU. NWH: >!Potentially with their own branched timelines if they returned with the villain's they saved being alive. !<
I'd agree in saying this could be the MCM in chronological order but you're definitely right to say it's wrong to include out of Universe films in an MCU list.
Okay that’s true but we haven’t even ventured into the X-Men timeline yet and the major ramifications that holds
I think I just say at which time they take place
Even in a multiverse timeline, people don't include The Incredible Hulk.
Yep, they also missed that Iron Man 2, Thor and Hulk all occured within the same week. Instead, setting them a year apart.
Somewhere it was stated it took place at Christmas and was at least 2 years after endgame so…
Yeah they took that back
Daredevil
This is probably a stupid question but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a FULL marvel timeline out there. And i'm not talking just the MCU. ALL Marvel comics/movies/series put together in 1 watch/read/view - order. All different timelines and different dimensions also included.
All i find is the MCU vieworder
This is probably as close as you're going to get. It's just the MCU, though.
However, it includes all the movies, shows, short films, web-series and tie-in comics - with the various timelines - broken down to the day.
That's extremely complicated counting in the comics, because there are lots of dealings with alternative timelines, story arcs that go nowhere. However if you are just starting the start with the something like the reboot.
Timeline of events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Key Considerations for the Timeline of Events in the MCU:
Phases: The MCU is divided into phases, with each phase containing multiple films and series that contribute to the overarching narrative.
Key Events:
Multiverse Concept: Introduced in "Loki" and expanded in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," this concept allows for alternate realities and timelines.
Viewing Order: For a coherent experience, consider watching the films in release order or chronological order based on the events within the universe.
Recommendation: If you're new to the MCU, start with the films in Phase One and progress through each phase. This will give you a comprehensive understanding of character development and plot progression. For a detailed timeline, consider resources like the Marvel website or fan-made timelines that outline events chronologically.
