TL;DR
Battery Saver and Software Settings
Many Lenovo laptops have built-in battery management features that can affect charging behavior. For example, the Legion series has a battery saver mode that stops charging at certain percentages to extend battery life [5:1]. This mode can be adjusted in the Lenovo software, so it's worth checking if this setting is causing your issue. Similarly, some models stop charging between 95% and 100% for the same reason
[5:3],
[5:4].
Hardware Checks
If your laptop isn't charging, it could be due to hardware issues such as a faulty charger or battery. In one case, replacing the charger resolved the problem [3:1]. Another user found that their issue was related to the integrated circuit after visiting a repair shop
[3:2]. If you suspect a hardware issue, testing with another charger or seeking professional diagnostics might be necessary.
Power Drain and BIOS Reset
Performing a power drain by holding down the power button when the laptop is off can sometimes resolve charging issues [2:2]. Additionally, resetting the BIOS to default settings has been suggested as a potential fix
[2:4]. These steps can help clear any temporary glitches affecting the charging mechanism.
Battery Charge Thresholds
Some users experience issues where the laptop only charges when completely drained [4:2],
[4:3]. This could be related to charge thresholds set by the operating system or firmware. On Linux systems, these thresholds can be programmed into the battery
[4:1]. Checking for similar settings on Windows or other OS might offer a solution.
Professional Support
If troubleshooting steps don't resolve the issue, contacting Lenovo support or visiting a service center is advisable. Lenovo representatives often provide links to guides or suggest sending the device for repair [1:1],
[2:3].
My Lenovo Gaming Laptop 3 won’t charge, even when I plug the charger into a different power outlet or even use anothercharger. It’s been happening since this Tuesday.
Have you tried charging it via USB C? - make sure to use at least a 60W PD charger/powerpack with 20V out.
If it doesn't charge by USB C but the laptop otherwise works then the battery needs to be replaced.
If it does charge via USB C then you have a motherboard problem with your charge circuit.
You can also check the battery connection to the motherboard.

I have a Lenovo Thinkbook 15 G4, it won’t charge. When it is plugged in, it will say it is charging, the light indicator shows it’s charging, but the battery percentage will only go down.
I found that holding the power button for 30 seconds when the laptop is turned off, then plugging it in and turning it on, will allow it to charge again until the power cable is removed. If removed I have to power down and do it all again for it to charge
I have removed the battery and cmos battery, held down the power button for a few minutes, that changed nothing. I’ve updated / reinstalled drivers, updated bios, used different cables and adapters including the OEM one. Tried all the Lenovo diagnostic tools and software, reinstalled windows, installed Linux mint, still doesn’t work.
Not sure what else I can try, it doesn’t make sense to me that it’s a hardware issue if it can work normally once I held the power button down?
Any help appreciated
/u/Ecstatic-Advisor-904 Hey there! Apologies for the trouble. Just to confirm, did the problem start? Did you change any settings or install anything prior to that? Does the laptop turn off automatically once you unplug the charger from the unit?
In the meantime, you can follow the steps from this link https://lnv.gy/3SAJ8As and let us know how it goes. Thank you for reaching our support! -Chris_Lenovo
The laptop doesn’t turn off once I unplug the charger. The laptop works perfectly normally and charges normally but only after holding the power button down when powered down. Nothing was changed or installed before this started happening, the laptop was used for an extended period of time as a desktop like pc, plugged in 24/7, but doing a battery report shows the battery is fine. I’ve done all driver updates, manually and through vantage, bios updated, drivers uninstalled and reinstalled. Fresh windows installed, resetting bios settings. Lenovo diagnostics showed no issues at all.

My laptop is constantly charging and not charging at the same time. Would anyone advice whether i should go check on the lenovo shop if the problem lies on adapter or the laptop itself or should do something about this myself?
I've the same problem. First the ant infestation damaged my adapter so I ordered a new one. Meanwhile I haven't used my laptop for 2 months when I plugged back in I got the same issue as your laptop. I diagnosed the laptop in nearby repair shop. First they told the issue is in the battery, but it wasn't. They told the problem is in Integrated Circuit. Tomorrow I'll take it to Lenovo Service center. If you get your laptop fixed pleas share your experience!
I had the same problem with Lenovo IdeaPad gaming 3
https://www.reddit.com/r/Lenovo/s/J0W7TVHW4M
You can check the post for the stuff I tried
In the end the problem was from the charger
I bought a new one with the same specs and it's working fine
Thanks for the info 🙏
Hello folks, here is my battery problem.
My laptop not getting charged when the battery has some power. Then if the battery getting drained fully then my laptop starts to accept charging.
Any idea or suggestions would be appreciated.
When i am pressing the power button, it is not indicating about the battery, which means it is fully drained... so now i can charge it.. when the indication comes, then i can't charge..
How low does it have to go to start charging? On my Thinkpad the percent to start and stop charging can be programmed into the battery by my OS (Linux). For example, it can be set to start charging at 90% and stop at 95%.
It should be completely drained, and then only it will start charging.. after 0% battery has some residual power that also to be drained..
That is strange. What is the OS on the laptop?
Hello, I just bought lenovo legion 5 last week, may I know why my battery status shows that my laptop is plugged in and not charging.
Sad to hear that, i wonder why many users are experiencing such issues with this model and Lenovo specifically .
Overall do you thing this laptop is decent you recommend it? have you faced any issue with updating . Hope you find a solution asap
No any other issue occur by now. In my opinion this is a decent laptop for its price, I would recommend if you are finding a budget gaming laptop.
It will stop charging at 96% sometimes to preserve battery life.
Its not charging between %95, %100 to save battery life
Thanks for the information!
Have you enabled the battery saver where it will hold its charge at 55-60% and then stop charging till it drops to 54% (this extends the life of the battery)? This mode can be turned on/off in the Legion software.
If it is at 95-100% where it has stopped charging, again this is on purpose to help extend the life of the battery and charger by stopping the charger constantly turning on and off when just 1% is missing.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the information!
My Lenovo laptop isn’t charging. It was charging perfectly fine earlier through out the day and a couple hours before but now now it’s not charging at all. I let it die completely and now it won’t charge or turn back on. How do I fix this?
What model/model# is your Thinkpad?
When you plug in the charger, does a little LED light come on near the port?
It’s an Ideapad, autocorrected it.
The led does come on near the port and I let it charge for about 30mins instead of continuing to touch it and it gained no battery what so ever.
What color is light and is it steady or flashing?
What model/model# is your IdeaPad?
The good news might be your charger is okay?
Give it a few hours to charge. Make sure your replacement charger is correct Wattage as old on. A lower Wattage charger will not charge while laptop is in use. Yours might be a 90w or higher. If after a few hours and charging port light is still orange, check battery to make sure it is plugged in properly. If so, I would suspect battery is bad.
Hi there! Late response, but I ordered a new battery and replaced it myself and it turned on and worked for a bit. I left it open to charge and once I saw it go up I closed the laptop. But when I went to open it again, it would flash on then turn off like last time before I replaced the battery. Now I’m not sure what the problem is
Does your laptop have two batteries? Try taking out the external one? It's
I took out the internal and replaced it with a new one but it still won’t turn on for more than a second
Hi, u/sunken_shipx. We apologize for the late response. Are you using the original charger? If yes, do you have a spare charger to use? Will there be charging lights on when you plug it in? In the meantime, you can use this guide https://lnv.gy/4g424ko for the battery issues. If all of these are done, try doing a power drain using this guide https://lnv.gy/3CfC9se, then see if you can access the BIOS using this guide https://lnv.gy/4gYtdXu. Then press F9 to load default settings in the BIOS, then hit F10 to save and exit the BIOS page. It will automatically restart the device. Check if it works; if not, send it to the nearest service center using this link to locate one. Hope this helps. -Kate_Lenovo
Did you try a different outlet?
Yes, 3 different outlets
Is it fixed already?
It’s not

Here’s what I suspect based on your symptoms:
It’s not the battery. It’s not the charger. It’s the EC.
You’re dealing with a possible Embedded Controller (EC) firmware glitch which controls things like power delivery, battery charging, and thermal behavior beneath the OS layer.
Your clue? The fact that holding the power button resets charging temporarily. That “deep drain” reset you’re doing is resetting the EC not just CMOS or BIOS.
Try This: EC Reset the “Pro” Way
Lenovo ThinkBooks usually support a hard EC reset like this:
Shut down the laptop completely
Unplug charger + remove battery (if removable)
Hold the power button for 60 seconds
Leave everything disconnected for 10 minutes
Plug in only the charger and boot.
If that stabilizes things even briefly it confirms it’s EC-related.
If EC Reset Doesn’t Fix It:
Try flashing EC firmware directly via BIOS or Lenovo’s tech tools:
Visit support.lenovo.com
Look specifically for EC updates for your ThinkBook 15 G4
Make sure you’re running the latest BIOS and EC combo (they’re often separate files)
There’s no EC update on the Lenovo support site
If there’s no separate EC firmware update listed, it’s likely bundled into the latest BIOS update already (Lenovo sometimes doesn’t list EC updates explicitly). Still, the symptoms you're describing charging only after a power drain reset are classic EC behavior.
Try this:
Reflash the BIOS anyway, even if it’s the same version. A fresh flash can reinitialize the EC controller in some cases.
Check Lenovo Vantage or Commercial Vantage sometimes firmware/EC updates show up only through those apps.
Boot into BIOS and leave the laptop plugged in at idle for 15 to 20 minutes. Weirdly, that’s helped in a few edge cases where the EC needed a "passive handshake" with the battery controller.
If none of this works, then yeah it could point to a board-level charging controller issue.
Hello all, I have been recently suffering charging problems with my Lenovo Legion 5, I have swapped out the cable recently expecting that to be the cause of the problems. But with my new cable, I have seen consistent unreliability when it's in a particular position. I have also had problems with my cable suddenly losing it's charging connection (whilst plugged in charging indicator light can sometimes begin to flicker and then go out). When pulling out the charger after this sort of incident I have found that the metal tip of the connector is pretty hot and has occasionally been borderline burning hot. Would anybody be able to give me an idea as to what is going on so that the problem may be remedied as I am not able to deduce it from internet searches? Thanks in advance!
Hey there, I know it's been a year but did you find a fix?
Afraid I didn’t really, had the charging port replaced and that fixed it for a couple of weeks maybe before it went back to normal 😕. Sorry, wish my story could’ve been of more help.

As mentioned above. My Lenovo Legion 5 has completely stopped charging. When i plug in the charger, the led is on for half a second and disappears, sometimes the light blinks a few times. Sometimes it's on for about a second then goes off. In neither of these scenarios is it charging. My laptop is now at 2% battery and basically dead. What do i do??
I hope you're luckier than my friend. I actually came here to post my frustrations.
His Y740 seemingly stopped charging. Replacement battery didn't help. Spent a month at one of their authorized service centers and they couldn't figure anything out. In his case it doesn't even work when plugged in apparently.
After having mine for just over 2 years, tonight my laptop refuses to show anything other than 0% but I'll save the details for my post...
Good luck man, I really hope your laptop is alright.
Holy crap dude. What happened in the end with his? I don't think i have the same problem but i'll keep this in my mind nevertheless
As of now, I don't have any news to report, as I don't want to try the battery replacement yet (it's finals week and I don't want to push my luck, I'll try when I'm done), but if you don't mind the long read here's my post:
If when it's plugged in you move the charging cable around a bit, does the led blink? If so, it might "just" be the cable that is broken.. Happens with pretty much all electrical cables that gets bent back n forth a lot..
If you mean fiddle with the cable when it is connected yes, I've tried circling, pushing, moving around, but still the blinking persists. Now i'm confused as to whether i should go to a service centre or buy a new charger and maybe a battery replacement if that doesn't work
I did a hard reset and then charged it worked again. But as soon as I unplug it I have to do a hard reset for it to charge again. This doesn't make sense.
So what I did was I hard resetted it and kept it plugged in to see what happens. But now the laptop charges 10 percent. And after each 10 percent it stops charging. I adjust the charger without unplugging it it charges again.
So please help I am going crazy!
Hi. I've had some unfortunate recent experience with this. Do you have the yellow rectangular power port connector? If so, the problem is that the small pins inside the port become flattened over time. As the connection grows more tenuous, it can cause arcing, leading to carbon buildup inside the port which makes matters worse.
I have a Thinkbook 13s with this problem under warranty. It was working with intermittent charging, like yours. Lenovo sent an incompetent tech who couldn't even open the case.
Two motherboard replacements later the laptop just gives a blue screen of death and the same tech closed the service request. I am trying to escalate it now. This will likely be my last ever Lenovo laptop, after literally over two dozen Thinkpads etc. bought for me and my family over the years.
Is there a fix at home that can be done? I am sick of this garbage.
You can try bending the pins and cleaning the port to get some more time.
