Verizon 5G vs AT&T 5G Speed Comparison

TL;DR Verizon generally offers faster speeds with its midband and mmWave 5G, while AT&T has broader coverage but often slower speeds due to reliance on low-band 5G.

Coverage and Speed

AT&T boasts the most extensive 5G coverage among the two, largely due to its deployment of low-band 5G (n5) which covers more area but offers slower speeds [1:3]. However, this low-band 5G is often criticized for being slower than LTE [1:1], [3:1]. Verizon, on the other hand, focuses more on midband and mmWave 5G, which provides higher speeds but less coverage compared to AT&T's low-band 5G [1:2], [3:4].

mmWave Deployment

Verizon is leading in mmWave deployment, extensively installing it in downtown areas and sports stadiums [2:2], [2:4]. This contributes to higher speeds in urban areas where mmWave is available. AT&T has deployed mmWave as well, but not as extensively as Verizon [2:3], [2:6].

Reliability and Performance

In terms of reliability, AT&T is often praised for having better indoor coverage due to its low-band 5G, which penetrates buildings better [2:11]. However, Verizon's midband and mmWave 5G offer superior speeds when available [1:4], [4:3]. Users have reported that Verizon's LTE can outperform AT&T's low-band 5G in speed [3:7].

Home Internet Options

For home internet, Verizon's 5G service offers better upload speeds and lower latency, making it a preferable option for gaming and streaming [4:1], [4:3]. AT&T Air provides higher download speeds but suffers from higher latency [4].

Overall Strategy

Both carriers are actively upgrading their networks, but Verizon appears to be focusing more on high-speed deployments like mmWave and midband 5G [1:8], [3:4]. AT&T's strategy includes expanding coverage through low-band 5G, which may offer broader but slower connectivity [3:2], [3:10].

how are both doing in terms of 5g and coverage and overall strategy for the future

Verizon is quite a bit ahead. Att has been upgrading their towers at a decent clip lately, but so has Verizon. Verizon tends to have A LOT MORE front and backhaul. Verizon also has much better density.

Both are far behind tmobile though.

Att has a lot of 5g n5 low band. Which tends to be slower than their 4g. I wouldn’t really count that as 5g. I supposed technically it is, but it’s not very good.

When I think 5g, personally I think of midband and mmWave. In midband, Verizon is beating Att.

Fronthaul is the data bandwidth going to the individual antennas. Backhaul is the data bandwidth to the tower.

Att tends not to give enough bandwidth to their towers so they get badly congested.

You seem more like density guy. Which is fine. But if someone is traveling a lot Tmobile is still way behind there.

Disagree, both Verizon and ATT have better coverage and reliability than T-Mobile especially in rural areas. Tmobile is good for city dwellers I guess.

People who respond here never ask enough questions. How often do you travel away from your home site. Where is the US are you? All of these will influence your choice. AT&T offers a more reliable network and less congestion at the expense of speed. Verizon is typically faster with their 5G (4G towers still come to a crawl sometimes) and have slightly less overall coverage. But if you live in a city (say NY for example) where there is a dense mmWave footprint, then you could pick Verizon and be happy. I personally keep AT&T because of coverage and reliability because I travel outside of my city a lot, but where I am Verizon is a congested mess, and T-Mobile network reliability is…. yeah.

Feel like verizon in my area(fresno, ca) has it all pretty covered, theres a usable low band galore in rural areas especially where att coverage is lacking. Att low band is crawling slow almost useless.

Id rather have low band coverage everywhere than spotty midband (att)coverage with near unusable service.

Verizon, is this even a question? They have deployments in the downtowns of most major cities and most sports stadiums also. Both of the major downtowns near me you could walk through and never drop mmWave on Verizon.

Att tried to install it a bit too, but there’s is very sparse. Tmobile it literally doesn’t exist anywhere except for like 1 block in NYC. But Tmobile has the best mid band coverage so they’re in no hurry to deploy mmWave when their n41 will reliably do 800+ mbps in most markets

I remember a Verizon contractor installing mmWave small cells like nuts around our downtown about 4 years ago. AT&T apparently has one little section with mmWave around the office where I’ve seen some nice speed tests but probably nothing compared to what Verizon offers around here.

Verizon definitely has the most, in terms of actual mmWave deployments. As for the other two mainstream carriers, I’m not sure which one is ahead of the other. T-Mobile and AT&T both prioritized midband for 5G a lot earlier than Verizon did.

Verizon has the most mmWave, by far, deploying it extensively in large and mid-size cities and even in some suburbs now. They also made the broadest effort to get it into stadiums and arenas. All three of the large arenas in my region have Verizon mmWave inside, but only one has AT&T mmWave (and it came years after Verizon, right before that venue hosted one of a professional league's biggest events of their season, and only because AT&T is a sponsor in that league).

I've also seen Verizon mmWave paired with traditional small cells in a lot of suburban business district corridors -- think about the typical strip mall type areas.

AT&T has been more strategic and selective, but they actually have quite a few mmWave small cells in larger city central business districts. They seem to focus a lot more on getting mmWave outside places where people congregate, like the parking lots and garages near those stadiums I mentioned above. AT&T even has two mmWave nodes outside one of the local state university's indoor arenas, and it's not even a major university.

All said, I've seen no AT&T mmWave in the suburbs. And honestly, they seem to hold up capacity-wise in those areas outdoors. It's really their lack of density of the macro grid and the reliance on low-band indoors that hurts them. Too many places where AT&T works great outside, but step into a store and you drop to B12 and data just stops working. Even with "Turbo".

T-Mobile notoriously avoided mmWave and talked negatively about it for years. But they actually have a few mmWave radios on macros in my region. With the huge swaths of contiguous PCS, AWS, and 2.5 GHz that T-Mobile has in my region, I'm actually quite surprised that they deployed any mmWave at all.

In summary, I'd characterize the size of mmWave deployments by carrier in order as Verizon, AT&T, then T-Mobile.

at&t actually was later than Verizon when it comes to mid-band 5G. One of the reasons I originally switched to VZ was because they were deploying mid-band where ATT was still sitting on their hands or wasting time with DSS lowband.

Here in los Angeles T-Mobile has the fastest speeds and Verizon is second and like I said at&t is the worse In data speeds . But I HAVE noticed At&t has the best quality indoors . Costco in Alhambra for example and the Montebello mall and MANY OTHER buildings and stores I have seen it wit my own eyes both T-Mobile and even Verizon crap out completely deep inside and go to SOS and get absolutely no signal so u can't call or text or use data , but at&t in the same building deep inside while the other 2 have nothing at&t always gets at least 1 or 2 bars and it works to call and use data yes the data is really slow but it works that's better than having absolutely nothing on T-Mobile and Verizon.

This post excludes Tmobile because we all know they are winning the 5G race.

But comparing AT&T and Verizon, AT&T has about 40% more 5G coverage than Verizon right now. I was honestly surprised to see how sparse the Verizon 5G map is. Is Verizon doing true 5G and AT&T calling LTE - 5G+ as I suspect they are doing from FTM where it shows 5G but on band 12.

Any opinions on who’s winning the upgrade race, and who is doing it better?

I’ve always thought Verizon was the king of overall reliability, coverage, and speed but now I feel like AT&T is beating them.

AT&T has much more low band (mainly 850 MHz) 5G coverage to complement their midband 5G, than Verizon. With Verizon, it’s basically n77 C-band or nothing in a lot of areas.

It’s a bit of an oversimplification, but it’s little bit of both IMO.

AT&T’s 5G (not 5G+) is essentially just very slightly upgraded LTE. This is why oftentimes the speeds aren’t any different than LTE would be. It’s also very low band so speeds are never going to be that good on it. 5G+ however is “real” 5G (mid band and high band) and, while they still rely on an LTE anchor, it is still very fast.

Verizon took a similar approach with their 5G rollout. Lots of low band LTE being relabeled 5G. However they have a lot more 5G UW (mid and high band) than att does with 5G+. But, in my experience in my area, Verizon will oftentimes fall back to LTE if you aren’t connected to 5G UW rather than “fake” 5G.

In summary, I would say Verizon is leading ATT significantly in terms of actual 5G coverage. But ATT and Verizon, in my experience, still have great coverage overall with their low band “fake” 5G.

I’ve yet to have problems and get over 300mbps in my area.

When 5G came around they seriously stepped up there game and in my opinion have the best 5G coverage while maintaining a good speed. Theres a lot of times I have 5G with AT&T or Verizon and it’s simply unusable or close to. T-Mobile is the most consistent with when it has 5G it has good speed to go with it

Both VZW and ATT are in a tricky spot because they have more customers than their spectrum can really support if they plan to go on a price war with T-Mobile (who has excess spectrum due to the sprint acquisition) and go all out unlimited etc. C band will help but it’s a long ways off and won’t really make an impact until a lot of the existing base upgrades to a phone that supports c band.

I think Verizon’s best bet in the future will be to refarm spectrum that it was using for cdma and repurpose that for LTE/5G. They need to shut down cdma ASAP and become a full VoLTE/VoNR network. That way they essentially have all this new empty spectrum that was previously used for cdma

Clearly ATT is ready to go to war with T-Mobile with the latest changes to their Unlimited Elite plan and their new international plan.

ATT is in the better spectrum position than Verizon is.

TMobile has multiple problems to overcome that people don't seem to think about if they really want to compete with ATT or even Verizon long term. Hype alone won't change those problems.

No you're not the only one. I live in a semi rural area of NJ (low population density) and have had a great LTE signal and throughput for 7+ years.

In the past two months the reliability of data throughout has gone to crap. Signal strength continues to be fine, but actual data usability is sluggish or non-existent at times.

It's weird because it still works most of the time and when it does work my speeds and latency are still great. But there's a lot more disruption. Kinda feels like Comcast is running it. 😃

The only thing I can think of is that DSS is negatively and dramatically affecting my LTE connection. I still have an LTE only phone. Also this change in behavior happens miles away too so I don't think it's just a single tower.

Atts promos are aggressive right now, .99 cent iPads and free phones. Help with payoff of old carrier, more like a "payback" just saying. Also, if you have their fiber 20% off one service. Autopay on checking account and paperless billing gives you another $10 off per line as well.

Have you considered switching to US Mobile? You can try all 3 networks by “teleporting” and seeing which network is best in areas you frequent. No one can tell you definitively how your experience on ATT will be. For most people it’s fine. I buy the turbo add on for $7 to mitigate any congestion, I figure being on that QCI is worth the $7 because majority of customers probably are not.

It’s worth mentioning if priority and congestion is your concern that Verizon lets their MVNO lines be on the same QCI as post paid, T-Mobile does not except for Google Fi, and AT&T is a mixed bag allowing it added for a fee.

Price increase was the first thing the wife didnt like. Then current bill we didn't get any autopay discount on it even though we have debit card on auto pay.

Not comfortable giving any carrier access to pull from the bank account with all the breaches they all have had

Those two things really made her question whether we can get better deals elsewhere

I've been very happy with the network but the wife said T-Mobile is starting to feel just like when she had sprint. In her words she originally signed up for the uncarrier, not sprint

Keep in mind the only autopay discount AT&T offers is through a bank account, and they’ve had just as many breaches as T-Mobile

The wife kind of wants to. My concern is some friends on firstnet have had some really bad experiences.

Oh yeah and, there is no SA unable to connect like T-Mobile and Verizon, unfortunately. Anybody knows when AT&T will reach T-Mobile and Verizon’s state?

At&t way of doing 5G is mostly converted existing 4G site, especially using ENDC too which still rely a-lot on NSA. They would actually need a-lot more mid-band to enable SA with a good speed

Or, just not converting them at all. Really kept hoping their focus was on virtualizing the core network and deploying O-RAN, then go on a blitz of hardware updates with the latest and greatest.

Instead, it seems they just gave up, waiting for more government handouts.

Im actually getting faster speeds most of the time on att now. It wasnt that way not too long ago. It was almost always tmobile but comparing the two side by side and at least for me att is usually faster and more usable now.

Ive been very surprised

AT&T has the biggest network overall thanks to their FirstNet deal, under which they have built out the largest LTE network in the US, but their 5G network coverage would be second to T-Mobile’s. As for better, that totally depends on your area. AT&T’s network seems to be less congested than Verizon’s, on average, but Verizon has more C-Band spectrum (than AT&T) that they’re using to roll out their mid-band 5G network.

It really depends on where you are. Att has become more congested in non urban areas here in Michigan. Like great coverage but my in-laws home and mine went from 100mbps to barely being able to browse during the day if not on wifi. One engineer told me that these towrs were built with only band 12 and 14 and looks like lot more users came on. Given att had the largest gains in last 3 years. Their network didn’t catch up in these areas. He said due to cut downs now these towers are probably 3-4 years away from upgrades.

AT&T will lag in network investments over the years and they won't be customers first choice. TMobile will be customers first choice and Verizon will be second. After TMobile completes N41 rollout and Verizon N77 rollout, hardly anyone will use AT&T. AT&T should not complain about spectrum. They are not deploying what they have with them. CBand+DoD along with great modernized LTE network will help them to get back in competition, but never gain it's lost position.

Unless you're constantly traveling throughout the US, the "bigger" or "better" overall network doesn't matter. What matters is which network is the best for you, where you live and work and use your phone the most. Not just in coverage, but in providing a stable and fast connection.

I think AT&T will win the 5G race

Posted by cashappmeplz1 · in r/ATT · 6 months ago

#1. Coverage:

AT&T already has a widespread lowband 5G network using the 850MHz band (n5), but they don’t own it nationwide. In order to get a fully nationwide 5G lowband network they could, 1. Spectrum swap with Verizon so they both own equal amounts of 850MHz spectrum, or 2. Use n12 at 5MHz in areas they don’t have 850MHz licenses, and use B14 for LTE coverage (the only problem with B14 is FirstNet’s priority, so if a disaster happens or something, everyone but FirstNet users would be kicked off B14).

#2. Capacity:

AT&T already owns 120MHz of n77 spectrum in the US nationwide(140MHz in some markets), in 2026 or possibly even this year, AT&T will be feasting for some more n77 DoD spectrum, they could get an additional 40-80MHz of DoD spectrum, plus FirstNet 50MHz of n79(4.9GHz) They could potentially have 160-200MHz of n77 like Verizon.

#3. Density:

AT&T has a decent mmWave portfolio in urban areas and they also have tons of small cells too, as time goes on i’m sure they will continue to add mmWave + small cells as they move closer to 5G SA. They already have the best LTE coverage across the country so I would expect for them to densify with macro cells for LTE/5G/5G+ too as they progress further into 5G.

My bet is on T Mobile. I recently switched from ATT to Mint Mobile and the coverage and speed is much better. At least in my area.

cashappmeplz1 · OP · 6 months ago

T-Mobile had a headstart. 600MHz from 2017 gave them the “nationwide” 5G network they have today, they started their 5G SA network in 2020 using the n71 band, then eventually using n41 in 2020 also. AT&T just got all their n77 spectrum in 2023, plus the Ericsson deal so they have to swap the Nokia gear out for Ericsson nationwide. In 2026/2027 I think they will be on T-Mobile’s level since n77 deployments are already ramping up since Q4 2024.

I switched from ATT to TMo just over 2 years ago. Before that I had 5G off on my iPhone almost all the time bc it was so awful on ATT. I travel extensively and often have coverage map (the app) running collecting speed test datapoints. I still have both accounts, with one FirstNet line, spread between friends and family. 5G does seem to be finally improving with ATT, but the midband spectrum TMo got from Sprint gave them a considerable lead. I hope all networks do well in the long run. Competition is good for consumers.

T-Mobile got 2500MHz in 2020, AT&T for cleared to use all their n77 spectrum in 2023. I don’t know why people rush AT&T so much like they won’t catch up eventually, and it will be just like T-Mobile if not better.

Fun fact. AT&T will soon have much more 5g customers soon. Starting end of 2025 into 2027 as part of a network upgrade (among things such as Google EDGE servers) McDonald’s restaurants will be moving from 4G LTE backups to 5G backups. In initiative known as Global Restaurant Network Transformation (GRNT)(all network equipment besides the modems in McDonald’s restaurants are handled by AT&T). If they haven’t won before. They have now. 14,000 more 5G customers.

The amount of bandwidth dedicated to low band 5G is tiny - that is why areas without n77 are frequently faster on LTE only. AT&T is going to have to refarm a lot of low bandwidth spectrum to 5G to have any chance of competing with, for example, n71 on T-Mobile.

22 upvotes on reddit
cashappmeplz1 · OP · 6 months ago

Well T-Mobile has 15-20MHz of n71 in majority of the country, I don’t think AT&T would be able to pick up that much lowband spectrum at all, unless they somehow bought Dish and started using n71, but that would be a very long process.

For AT&T, lowband 5G would only be for long range VoNR, indoor penetration, and overall 5G SA coverage. It really wouldn’t serve a purpose that much like T-Mobile’s 15-20MHz lowband would. Still better than nothing though, they will need it nationwide eventually.

AT&T cheaper out on a lot of rural installs. They put equipment up that does 5G for band 5, but didn’t put anything there for midband. Now they have to pay to go upgrade those rural sites, and I just don’t see them doing that. Those are the areas where AT&T’s low band performance will make T-Mobile look good. Especially since T-Mobile is putting band 71, 2, and 41 on those same rural sites.

Short sighted in AT&T’s part. Unless of course they do go back and upgrade those sites. I doubt it though.

I think n79 will mainly give them a leg up, though T-Mobile is leaps and bounds ahead of AT&T (and Verizon) today.

We’re really at a point where 5G has only been a marginal improvement over 4G though, and there’s not really anything someone can do on a phone over 5G that they can’t do over 4G, unless they’re on mmWave 5G, and T-Mobile had to do something to improve their network because it was barebones.

Verizon 5G vs AT&T 5G speed comparison

Key Considerations for Verizon 5G vs AT&T 5G Speed Comparison

  1. Network Coverage:

    • Verizon: Known for extensive coverage, especially in urban areas. Their 5G Ultra Wideband (UWB) offers high speeds but is limited to specific locations.
    • AT&T: Also has a broad network, with a focus on mid-band 5G that provides a balance of speed and coverage.
  2. Speed Performance:

    • Verizon 5G: Can reach speeds up to 1 Gbps in optimal conditions with its mmWave technology, but speeds can vary significantly based on location and congestion.
    • AT&T 5G: Typically offers speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 300 Mbps on average, with potential peaks higher in ideal conditions.
  3. Latency:

    • Both networks provide low latency, but Verizon's Ultra Wideband may offer slightly lower latency due to its advanced technology.
  4. Device Compatibility:

    • Ensure your device is compatible with the specific 5G bands used by each carrier. Some devices may perform better on one network than the other.
  5. Plan Options:

    • Compare the pricing and data plans of both carriers. Verizon may have higher prices for premium speeds, while AT&T often provides competitive pricing with good value.

Takeaways:

  • If you prioritize speed and are in an area with Verizon's Ultra Wideband, you may experience faster speeds.
  • If you need reliable coverage in more areas, AT&T's mid-band 5G could be a better option.
  • Always check local coverage maps and user reviews in your area to make an informed decision.

Recommendation: If possible, test both networks in your area to see which one provides better performance for your specific needs. Consider your usage patterns and whether you need high-speed access or broader coverage.
