Overview of Season 2
Vinland Saga Season 2 continues the epic tale of Thorfinn, a young warrior haunted by his past and seeking redemption. The season shifts focus from the intense battles and revenge-driven plot of the first season to a more introspective journey as Thorfinn grapples with his identity and purpose in life after the death of Askeladd.
Thorfinn's Journey
Season 2 delves deeply into Thorfinn's character development. After losing his purpose following Askeladd's death, Thorfinn finds himself enslaved on a Danish farm. This new setting allows for a slower-paced narrative that explores themes of slavery, freedom, and personal growth. Thorfinn's interactions with other slaves and his gradual transformation from a vengeful warrior to someone seeking peace and meaning are central to the storyline.
New Characters and Dynamics
The introduction of new characters adds depth to the story. Einar, another slave who becomes Thorfinn’s friend, plays a significant role in helping him find a new path. Their friendship is pivotal as it challenges Thorfinn's previous beliefs and helps him see the world differently. The dynamics between the slaves and their masters also highlight the harsh realities of the time, providing a backdrop for Thorfinn's internal struggle.
Political Intrigue and Historical Context
While the focus is more on personal growth, the season does not shy away from the political intrigue and historical context that defined the first season. The show continues to weave in elements of Norse history and mythology, enriching the narrative with cultural references and historical events. This blend of personal and political storytelling keeps the series engaging and thought-provoking.
Themes of Redemption and Peace
A major theme of Season 2 is redemption. Thorfinn's quest for peace and his rejection of violence reflect a broader message about the futility of revenge and the possibility of finding peace through non-violence. This thematic shift marks a significant departure from the action-heavy first season, offering viewers a more nuanced and reflective narrative.
In summary, Vinland Saga Season 2 offers a compelling continuation of Thorfinn's story, focusing on his personal growth and the exploration of deeper themes against a richly detailed historical backdrop.

well yes that'd be dumb because nobody is saying Foggy is going to be literally resurrected, only that he survived offscreen. that might actually be the worst example to use because we know Elden Henson is in season 2 and yet they've kept a tight lid on in what capacity. there are several cast members we know are in season 2 just through confirmation despite there being no set photos of them, like Matthew Lillard or Jon Bernthal. so I don't think this should be a worry
I wish I had not seen the clip on youtube of two of them at the end of shooting, which I did not want to see, because it spoiled it for me. Its a bloody nightmare these days.
On another note, >!...!< does not work for me to write spoilers. what am I doing wrong?
Well this sub will be full of spoilers at least
Gintama S2-3 doesn't have a dub, does it? It would be weird if a shadow announcement happened here of all places. Maybe it's just a nomenclature thing.
That would be the Sentai dub of VS, one would assume.
I’m sure it’s because I watched it first, but I heavily prefer the Netflix dub over the Sentai dub for Vinland.
I don’t think the Sentai dub is bad, I just really like the Netflix one, especially Thorfinn and Thor’s voice.
Maybe the florida dub is continuing. Most people hated it but I liked it
It was confirmed that Fuji tv was working on a dub for it over a year ago I’m pretty sure.
TV Tokyo* and yeah, the dub was subsidized by the Japanese government. iirc seasons 2 and 3 for this purpose cover about sixty episodes
>It would be weird if a shadow announcement happened here of all places.
Not at all. That's exactly how the Miami dub of the show's first season came about. We know TV Tokyo got financing for episodes 50-115 a while back.
Awesome, now people would be able to watch the Sentai dub of Vinland Saga since it was always locked behind HiDive. Both would now be easily accessible to find and watch.
HiDive had one? I thought it was just Crunchy and Netflix. So there's 3 different Vinland Saga dubs?
Crunchyroll never dubbed Season 1 because they never had the rights to the show until Season 2 premiered.
The reason the show has two dubs is because Amazon had the exclusive license for Season 1 for the first two years and they did not dub their anime during that time period. The main hope during that time was that Sentai were going to obtain the dvd/bluray rights and release the dub for home video. They did this for many Amazon shows during that time period and would also add those dubs to Hidive, their sister company.
Just after Sentai announced that their dub was coming out, the Netflix dub for Season 1 was leaked by accident. Netflix took their version down but the pirate sites had already got hold of the dub.
Later when Season 2 was about to premiere both Netflix and Crunchyroll got the rights to both of the seasons. Netflix continued with their version of the dub. Crunchyroll continued with the Sentai cast for characters coming back and used their own talent pool for new characters.
TLDR:
There are only two dubs for Vinland Saga.
Dub 1: Sentai(Season 1) -> Crunchyroll (Season 2)
Dub 2: Netflix(Season 1&2)
Thank goodness for that. It does the story more justice. Most of the people ik who see the Netflix dub have no idea what the political situation in the story was. The sentai dub gives the English characters accents which helps a lot.
Oh didn't even know they were different dubbs.
This is what is dropping on hulu October. I don't doubt it will happen just not now

The seventh prince, is he a God? Or is he an innocent devil?
When everyone else was entranced by Escher and Saria's song, that close up of Lloyd before he decapitated those Chimeras...
And then when he completely annihilated Guitane with that death beam at the end...
Our boy Lloyd was lookin' pretty nefarious... lol. Loved it.
He's really not doing a great job of denying being a god considering the instant decapitation of multiple chimeras spread all across the city.
I like how he kept getting annoyed whenever Guitane would call him a god and wouldn't listen.
Yeah, seeing Lloyd after learning Guitane's backstory (which looked great in those black and white colors) made me laugh out loud.
Lloyd clearly didn't want to hear it, as proven by literally bonking Guitane with a sword when he wouldn't shut up xD
Lloyd's face was understandable. This is the second episode where we've had to sit through Guitane's sad backstory for a good chunk of it with it being mostly a rehash of what we've already heard. Its a bit annoying we got yet another cliffhanger after last episodes for this fight above the clouds.
If Guitane got a penny for every time a divinely powerful being got annoyed at his voice, he would have two pennies, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
Feels like after learning Jade's spell, Lloyd just became exponentially stronger? I remember him still struggling against the Jade demon, meanwhile in this episode he's just toying with Guitane.
Ngl, I personally think Guitane's backstory is quite well written for a villain. That moment when he tried to "purify" the murderer only to realise he's actually "innocent" being guilt only with hunger, and in the end he still died of starvation. I definitely can see why he blamed the whole kingdom for creating such situation despite the king's promise. Also that art style is just fitting for his corrupted nature.
Few comedic moments still in the episode.
> Feels like after learning Jade's spell, Lloyd just became exponentially stronger? I remember him still struggling against the Jade demon, meanwhile in this episode he's just toying with Guitane.
I don't think so, conditions against Guisarme were just more difficult, wasn't really about his power.
Lloyd wanted to learn Shadow Wolf and was not aware how much a Demon is immune to magic (and could not use Divine Magic). It was a counter match-up with an additional condition for complete victory.
Once he got serious Lloyd was quick to defeat Guisarme, Jade's Demon.
>Feels like after learning Jade's spell, Lloyd just became exponentially stronger? I remember him still struggling against the Jade demon, meanwhile in this episode he's just toying with Guitane.
Jade's power is very overpowered to where the Demon Lord wanted it, and the Demon Lord was incredibly OP. I'm glad the power didn't get nerfed
The reason he struggled with Guisarme was only because of Shadow Wolf. Once Guisarme's ability to dodge infinitely was taken away and he saw just how much mana Lloyd had, he essentially gave up. He struggled to cast one of his own version of the void spell even after taking in all the mana in the area, Lloyd was able to cast them for fun and not feel any fatigue from it whatsoever. There's probably nothing in the world as strong as Lloyd anymore (Guisarme wasn't, he just stole an ability off Jade to put up as much of a fight as he did)
To get around Guisarme dodging via teleporting Lloyd could have used some big AoE spells but with the Assassin's Guild in the area that wasn't an option either as he'd kill them too.
The situation shut Lloyd down, but the moment he figured out how Shadow Wolf works and could predict Guisarme's teleportation he curbstomped him immediately.
I was honestly surprised Lloyd let him get that far in the story.
If this is truly the ending of the anime, Mahiru fans will jump with joy.
I know its coming this friday bit at what time? in european time pls
u r wrong
Where’s all this talk about the anime ending coming from? I’ve only seen this today.
Interesting they are doing an anime only finale for S2, it’s been a great season.
So a little while ago I made a post here asking if Vinland Saga season 2 was ever going to get any better or if it would just stay slow and boring (I was about 8 episodes in at the time). A bunch of people told me to stick with it and give it a chance, and honestly, I’m glad I listened.
To my surprise, the story really picked up and I ended up enjoying it way more than I expected. In fact, I might even go as far as saying season 2 is better than season 1. What I loved about it is that it wasn’t just the classic revenge or Thorfinn constantly raging and fighting. Instead, it felt like the show took a deeper turn, exploring growth, philosophy, and a completely different kind of strength.
It showed a side of Thorfinn we hadn’t really seen before, and it made me connect with him on a much deeper level than in season 1. The pacing, the character development, and the emotional weight really made season 2 stand out for me. By the end, I wasn’t just watching for the action I was hooked on the characters’ journeys and the bigger message of the story.
Glad you enjoyed it ^^ if you feel like it, read the manga, you are only half way of the journey
Is the manga worth it ? I really like animated stuff I fear I might spoil the story for myself if they decided to make a season 3
It’s worthy, the art is very beautiful, the story is well written and honestly, concerning anime, we still don't know if season 3 will ever happen since we have no news yet. If you are ok to wait for like 6 or 7 years to get the full story, it's all fine, of course.
But damn, the manga is really beautiful...
Glad you trusted the process, friend. Some stories need that slow buildup to make the later payoff work. I liked season 2 more than season 1, myself, and I already thought season 1 was fantastic.
I was just rewatching episode 22 again XD
22 & 23 were the best episodes in the entire season for me
Also how did they manage to make me love a character from the 1st episode then to hating it towards the end.
You have to read the manga After s2, they will try to find Vinland and Thorfinn will have badass moment without killing anyone
Just finished Season 2 Today, and it was genuinely my favourite arc out of any anime I've watched, Seen some people calling it Farmland saga and I was cringing out, Like I've only recently watched the show and I feel like I understand the Premise of it more than half of the people crying out, calling it boring. Dont get me wrong S1 was good, but it was Thorfinn just murdering people in cold blood sometimes,I wonder why people don't like character arcs and just characters smashing into each other like Action Figures.
Season 2 is my favorite part of the story but season 1 had much more going for it than just hype and fights. Askeladd is one of the best side characters ever and the writing was just as good as the farm arc there as well.
Yh i 100% agree especially regards to askeladd however I took one scroll online and people were calling this arc farmland saga and saying s1 was better due to it having cool fights and thorfinn just murdering people with no remorse. And most of them just use s1 to diminish this season
This is why the third arc is the best one, it has the best of everything
I liked the first third of season 2 much more than season 1. Then i felt it dragged on for a bit, but then had a great recovery in the last third.
I think my biggest critique is that it felt like Thorfinn was completely missing the point regarding becoming a True Warrior. His last memory of his father, who everyone regarded as a True Warrior, is him fighting but not killing in order to protect. & yet somehow after seeing his dad in his dreams & deciding to set himself back on the goal to become a true warrior; he goes full pacifist mode. I felt like it was out of character.
The story continues, and he still wrestles with this aspect throughout
I think it was good for the story though. Just being strong enough to win every fight without killing is a pretty boring solution to the problem of how to refuse violence.
I would say that Askeladd is the main character in S1. It is the prologue after all for thorfinns story. The plot is driven by Askeladd and he has the focus on his character ark.
Also season 1 gets much better after a re-watch.
Season 2 is the more acclaimed season to most. Season 1 is slightly better to me since askeladd is in my top 5 all time characters but both are phenomenal
Fanbases aren’t monoliths. Different people enjoy different things for different reasons. I can only speak for myself. The difference in pacing from season to season is extremely dramatic. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a show change that radically. I feel like they could have milked an extra hour or two out of season 1 if they wanted to and could have edited out an hour or two out of season 2 if they wanted to. I could see how someone may feel like they are two entirely different shows. The end of season 2 when he’s reunited with his sister felt somewhat like I was suddenly watching a third show. I don’t remember there being much comic relief before then. This isn’t to say 1 is good and 2 is bad. They are just very different. It only makes sense that different people would enjoy them differently. God of War and Stardew Valley are both fun games. It’s ok that the fanbases don’t entirely overlap.
Couldnt agree more, Watching for more than just fight scenes>>>
people don’t get the point of the series, i think. They see cool action scenes and the political conflict and don’t see or get the extremely pacifist message of the series
I wrote this as a comment but I think it would make for a good post on its own. I've seen a lot of people not like that the story ended without covering more of what comes after Vinland and not revisiting other characters important to the themes. I think this decision to end on a small scope without expanding to other characters or jumping ahead into the future is what, in part, has made people feel disappointed and read it as rushed. I don't feel this way though.
I think it was really a great decision to end on a chapter all about looking back on the good things they accomplished. Even if it didn't go perfect and there were mistakes to learn from, this ending wanted to say that it's ok to look at the good things, good things you never would have seen if you didn't try. After spending the whole story anticipating a failure and then seeing that failure play out, I think it's beautiful to come back around and show the ways it didn't fail at all.
I also think I like the decision to end with them leaving Vinland and not bring the timeline any further chronologically. We are left on the results, and are asked to come to our own conclusions. It shows you some of the potential lessons to learn, and the good results worth celebrating, but the only way to go forward from here would be to do even more of that reflection for you. Would I rather have more conversations about what the characters think and the conclusions they come to, or have the results presented to me to come to my own conclusions? I think I do lean towards the latter.
It's very open ended, for the characters and humanity as a whole. History indicates where these characters will end up, but if the story has said anything about its relation to history, it is that there are still good things to look forward to and hope for even if the ultimate outcome we anticipate is not ideal. Historically, Thorfinn won't return to Vinland, but it's nice that the story takes an open ended approach where you can still feel optimistic about his life going forward.
Maybe he worked towards finding a cure for the disease until his last days, or maybe he got sued for damages into retirement. But, maybe he came back to Vinland on a smaller scale, and history just forgot. Maybe he achieved something great after this that didn't get written down. Maybe he lived a fulfilled and peaceful life. This arc is all about how you don't know until you try, so I think it's fitting that the ending did not take that away from the characters by summarizing where they end up, detached from their thoughts and feelings. Despite the history, Yukimura still granted them all the same open ended hope for better that he wanted to convey to us.
Personally, I do not think this was the "safe" ending at all. I think this was an ending that asks far more of you than a tell-all kind of ending. Thorfinn and Canute did not meet back up to talk and reflect on their methods, but we see exactly where their methods have taken them. After 220 chapters of thorough discussion of the same topic, the end feels like it wants to trust that we can truly pick up where it left off, no longer holding your hand through it.
So you don't have any issues AT ALL about the ending?
Not even minor ones like not showing Thorkell & Canute?
I like Canute and Thorkell, and I thought we might see them again, but I don't dislike that we didn't. It was one possible angle, and I don't feel like the story needed to take it. Canute will continue to perpetuate violence in hopes of achieving something worth those sacrifices, and Thorkell will continue to feel unfulfilled but never understand what he is missing. I don't think there was much the story needed to say with them at this point that would not just be reiterating on these points, so I don't feel like bringing them back was a necessity.
That being said, no I don't think it's perfect. I think too much time went into Bug Eyes and Niska, and I think more could have been done to make that relationship feel less weird. I like what it is saying about cultural difference and shared humanity, but the discomfort unfortunately overshadows it.
I also think, while I like that the last chapter is a more positive reflection on the good things, I think it unfortunately makes it seem like the loss of Einar did not have as much of an impact on Thorfinn. There was about a day between when he died and when they had his burial, and then what seems to be at least one more day before they left. There was some time to process, but compared to other major deaths in Thorfinn's life it feels like he recovers quite quickly.
I'm not sure what could have been done to keep the benefits of the structure it took that I described, while letting Thorfinn feel more impacted. I don't want him to be enraged or depressed enough to drop his core character traits in defeat, him sticking to himself no matter what is important characterization, but I would want to really feel that Einar dying will stick with him forever.
It helps a bit for me to think of 219 and 220 as two halves of a single conclusion, rather than 220 alone being the conclusion. 219 was all about Einar's sacrifice and coming to understand / appreciate him in full, while reflecting on other mistakes too, so 220 really didn't need to double down on it.
Here's my list:
For Gudrid to get something, anything to do aside from just giving birth to Thorfinn's child in the last, what, fifteen chapters in the story? She really didn't get a lot to do in the end, after being such a standout in Eastern Expedition.
That is one of my biggest criticism of the story. even if historically she didn't do anything significant... I really wanted something from her other than being Thorfinn's house wife..... she had so much more to her character in the beginning of her introduction.
We didnt see Gudrid reation to Einar's death..
because sadly all of her character was reduced to her being thorfinn's house wife ... she had more to her character in the beginning of her introduction and by the end she barely was a character other than giving birth to Thorfinn's son.
The ship has long sailed but I was hoping that we'll see Miklagard. Maybe even Serkland.
Many of the things by op couldnhave happened in Miklagard
I think the message is well transmited. No need of encounters
Why no need? Just because the message was well transmitted doesnt mean encounters couldn't have bettered the story, shown more development, or would have been nice
The gist of the story was kept intact and the message was transmitted sure. But it would have just been fun and nostalgic to have some encounters we never saw again. Even if we have nothing I wished to see a small cameo from Askeladd, Thors, Sverkel etc. Everybody who showed Thorfinn the way in dark times.
Greece arc
Can we take a minute to appreciate the build up to this point? In about a month we’ll have no more Vinland to look forward to :(
Cheers to this thousand year voyage
At least we'll still have 2 more seasons to look forward to
Cheers to the wisdom it gave us and values which will stay forever🥂
I dont wanna see it go , I feel like I'm losing a gf I've never had or a family member it's so close and special to me I just don't wanna go.
"I have no enemies , nobody does"
Then we can start reading Berserk together. Or Yukimura’s other manga “Planetes”.
Cheers boys 🥂
To a thousand years voyage!
