What Redditors are Saying

Alternatives to Herschel Bags

TL;DR: Consider brands like The Cambridge Satchel Company, Coach, Tusting, and Status Anxiety for stylish alternatives to Herschel bags.

The Cambridge Satchel Company

For those looking for sturdy yet stylish bags, The Cambridge Satchel Company is highly recommended. These bags are known for their durability and can often be found secondhand at a more affordable price [2:1]. They offer a classic look that could serve well as an alternative to the Herschel Heritage style.

Coach

Coach offers a variety of leather bags that can serve as alternatives to Herschel. Their outlet store frequently has sales, making it possible to find quality bags under $100 [2:3][5:4]. Coach bags are noted for their craftsmanship and timeless design, making them suitable for both casual and professional settings.

Tusting

If you're seeking a brand with character and high-quality craftsmanship, Tusting is worth considering. Known for their excellent quality, Tusting bags provide a unique style that stands out from mainstream brands like Mark & Graham [4:1]. They offer a range of styles that could appeal to someone looking for something different from Herschel.

Status Anxiety

Status Anxiety offers minimalist designs with options like the Plunder Black crossbody bag. These bags are praised for their quality and affordability, fitting well within a budget while offering a stylish and functional alternative [1:2].

Other Recommendations

For those interested in exploring more options, consider brands like Lotuff, Mont Blanc, Hugo Boss, and Kovered. These brands offer a range of leather goods, from briefcases to crossbody bags, catering to different tastes and budgets [5:1][5:3][5:5]. Additionally, checking stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or Ross could yield great finds at reasonable prices [2:4].

Looking for silver hardware & small or no logo

ORIGINAL POST

Hi!

I’ve been a Kate Spade bag lover since I was a teenager. I am now older and I haven’t bought a new bag in years. I realized that I hate gold on bags and only want silver hardware. I also don’t like large logos but prefer no logo. I want a small bag (crossbody for wallet, purse, lip gloss, maybe sunglasses but not a must). I don’t carry much.

Any recommendations? Preferably brown or black pebbled leather. I tried an AllSaints bag from Nordstrom rack and I wasn’t sure of the quality so I returned it.

Hoping to stay under $200!

Anyone with suggestions for a sturdy yet still cheap-ish bag brand?

Posted by glitcharson · in r/handbags · 16 days ago

I’m looking for a stylish-yet-useful kind of bag for school, my current bag [a well-loved commuter backpack from target I’ve lugged around like a purse for a year] and it’s finally tearing on me. I’ve sewn up the tears but I’m unsure how much longer she can last and want to look for a replacement.

I’m specifically looking for something crossbody like a messenger bag [I can reinforce the stitching on the straps if needed] because my current bag has been hell and a half on only one of my shoulders so I’m looking to balance that weight a little better.

Around 200 bucks is going to be my limit here, but that’s still stretching it for me. I’m tempted to try and craft my own bag but I’ve never done something like that before and it’d be completely unpredictable for life-time and durability.

Validate with real merchants before touching a line of code; everything else is noise. Book 10 short calls with Shopify store owners this week and ask about the pain your idea tackles-no demo, no pitch, just stories of how they handle it today and what it costs them in time or money. If at least 7 say “I need this, can I pay when it’s ready?” you’re onto something; if not, tweak. Use Typeform to collect structured follow-ups, Loom to share a two-minute click-dummy you hack together in Figma, and Stripe payment links to see if anyone will swipe a card for early access. Skip a public waitlist until you’ve got five paid beta users; they’ll give sharper feedback than a thousand anonymous emails. I’ve run this play twice and it shaved months off development. I mix in Pulse for Reddit alongside Intercom and Hotjar to watch how merchants talk about the problem in niche threads. Talk to real merchants first, then build.

If you’re willing to buy secondhand, I highly recommend bags from The Cambridge Satchel Company. They are workhorses. If you buy brand new, you may be able to buy one from the website if it’s on sale.I know they have stockists globally and can maybe catch a deal elsewhere; full price they are definitely over $200. But there’s lots on reselling sites! It may just take a while depending on your desired style, size, and color.

BIFL Recommendation: Want Herschel Heritage-like Bag Suitable for Office

Posted by pratyushmanocha · in r/backpacks · 4 months ago

Hey guys,

I have a navy/tan Herschel Heritage bag I bought in 2019. Its pleather has torn now, and I do not think it would be repaired by the limited lifetime warranty Herschel offers. Additionally, I will start a new job soon, so I want something a bit more formal than the navy/tan design. Therefore, I am in the market looking for a new bag similar to Herschel's Heritage that would last me more than a few years.

Requirements:

  • 15" Laptop sleeve
  • Waterproof
  • Minimalistic design
  • Heritage look (I like the rugged look of leather- if I can get it in a material that wouldn't wear away, that is a huge plus!)
  • More than one zipped compartment (optional- more space is a plus)
  • Water bottle pocket (optional- having it is a plus)
  • Budget: 100-150 USD

I have looked at the Vaschy Classic Pack (cheap knockoff of Herschel, but I do not know how long it will last), Jansport Suede Campus, Topodesigns Daypack Classic, and L.L.Bean Mountain Classic Cordura Pack. So far, I liked Jansport the most since it meets almost all my requirements and looks very similar. However, I am worried the suede leather used would crack as it ages. So, I want to ask you all, do you have any recommendations (out of these or others) that are better than Jansport Suede Campus?

Thanks for your recommendations!

I need a new every day bag/work bag. I currently use a YSL Sac De Jour or an LL Bean camo tote depending on the day. I love Mark and Grahams style but I hate their quality and I feel like the brand is a little lame (makes me lame too I guess). I will probably pull the trigger on a Barbour tote unless I can find a more unique brand. I love finding small brands, off the beaten path items, etc. Please drop recs! Willing to spend $$$$ a bag I love but happy to drop $150. Doesn’t need to be fancy.

If you just type laptop leather briefcase into Google you will get lots of options.

If you care about branding then Mont Blanc has a slick, classy look (might be out of your price range though - potentially check eBay) or Hugo Boss which would be cheaper. I do actually have a RL leather laptop bag myself though because I couldn't afford a Mont Blanc briefcase at the time. The branding on mine is black, so on black leather it is subtle compared to the one you posted though

I was looking at this bag yesterday because I really want the mini leather Baggu shoulder bag, but I’m not enamored with the materials, i.e., “recycled leather”. Anyway, that one is $140.

Looks like there's a pretty crazy promo code working for the Baggu as well that brings the price down to $84!

I saw those in person yesterday. They feel better than a lot of vegan leather I've felt but if you know and love leather then it doesn't feel great. For that price I'd rather sink it into genuine leather. It's not eco-friendly if it's going to peel and need replacing.

If you're going to spend $100, I'd recommend going for a genuine leather bag since that'll be better quality. You can find some bags that are these styles and are genuine leather for around the $100 price point, although it may be tough to find one in black for that price:

I know this is over your budget, but Kate Spade recently had 40-50% off sale items, which would bring it under $100: https://www.katespade.com/products/hudson-medium-convertible-crossbody/K6576-1.html

There is a shoulder bag from Lauren Ralph Lauren called the Danni Medium Shoulder Bag, I think it’s 225 USD, but I’ve seen it go on sale (in Europe, I don’t live in US) for as low as €95. I have seen it in black, dark green, and burgundy, so I would assume you can find it in those colours at least, it seems to exist in many colours. It’s not shiny like the ones you posted, but the shape is really sleek and lovely. It looks very similar to the first one you posted but the leather is more matte. Best of luck!!
