TL;DR Popular wooden puzzle brands include Liberty, Wentworth, Artifact, StumpCraft, and Nautilus. Each brand offers unique designs and qualities that cater to different preferences.
Liberty Puzzles
Liberty Puzzles is frequently mentioned as a top choice for wooden puzzles due to their intricate designs and high-quality craftsmanship. However, some users have noted that they don't always favor the artwork offered by Liberty [4:3]
[5:6]. Despite this, Liberty remains popular for its detailed and challenging puzzles
[2:1].
Wentworth Puzzles
Wentworth is another highly recommended brand, particularly in the UK. Known for their "whimsy" pieces—special shapes within the puzzle—they offer a matte finish which many puzzlers prefer over glossy options [2:1]
[4:4]. Wentworth puzzles are often available at discounted prices during sales, making them an attractive option for collectors
[1:5].
Artifact Puzzles
Artifact Puzzles is praised for its quality, though some users find the glossiness of the pieces less appealing [5:2]. They offer an Ecru line that may address these concerns. Artifact's puzzles are known for their artistic designs and complex piece shapes
[4:4].
StumpCraft Puzzles
StumpCraft, based in Canada, is well-loved for its premium quality and unique designs [4:6]
[5:4]. Their puzzles are compared favorably to Liberty, with some users preferring StumpCraft for its distinct style
[4:7].
Nautilus Puzzles
Nautilus offers beautiful artwork, although their puzzles tend to be more expensive than other brands [5:5]. They are appreciated for their aesthetic appeal and are considered worth the investment by those who prioritize visual design in their puzzles
[4:4].
Other Notable Mentions
Pomegranate, Trevell, Gosling Gifts & Games, Gibsons, eeBoo, and Martin Schwartz are also mentioned as favorite brands, offering a variety of designs and themes [1:1]
[1:6]. These brands provide alternatives for those looking for non-wooden puzzles or different styles.
What are everyone's favorite brands? I really like ravensburger but their quality isn't the greatest. What are your go-to brands? I feel like more often than not, when I start away from a big brand, the quality isn't there, but sometimes those are the puzzles that are truly gems.

Puzzle brands with pieces like Buffalo, Ravensburger and Vermont Christmas Company?
My favourite ones this year have been Pomegranate, Trevell, Gosling Gifts & Games, Gibsons, eeBoo & Wentworth wooden puzzles.
Wooden puzzles look so so cool but they're so expensive. I think I would feel guilty buying one for myself haha. I'll have to check out the others. Another commenter said pomegranate. I'll have to take a look. Thank you!
It is funny you should say that…all of the wooden puzzles I bought from Wentworth have cost me £16, £19 or £25 in clearance and then I have sold them all on eBay for £25 each. It is like being paid to do Wentworth puzzles. Lol! The £25 ones were in the Black Friday sale. The £16 and £19 ones were from the Christmas clearance. I now know not to buy and Black Friday puzzles!
I have been enjoying cobble hill lately. The quality is superb, much less puzzle dust than ravensburger, a I like the unusual piece shapes
Martin Schwartz is my favourite. I also enjoyed Pomegranate, Art & Fable, Falcon and Galison. Galison quality is not the best but they make up for it with fun images
Oooh, that's the other one I love galison because it's easy to do their puzzles compared to some of the photorealistic nature ones. My favorite one is the time square one. I'll have to check out the others.
Buffalo and Ravensburger!
Hi, I am looking for your ideas on which puzzle companies are the best, particularly for making those thicker wooden puzzles that come with special shapes (e.g., a puzzle of an owl with shapes that include flowers, little birds, other little animals, etc.). I like the pieces to be thicker than the average jigsaw puzzle and especially like bright colors and mandala type designs or animals. I see that Puzzles Up is offering some discounts right now, so was thinking of purchasing some from them, but haven't used them before and wondering if they are any good or if there's other brands folks would recommend. Thanks for any ideas you can offer!
Genuine wooden puzzle makers are listed here.
Not cheap, but I’ve been really pleased with both Liberty and Stumpcraft puzzles.
I’ve been really enjoying the Victory wooden puzzles brand. My favorite of theirs is the minis. I love that I can sit back on the couch and work a puzzle with the tray they make for the minis.
I second this! I have 9 of the mini QTs. They are so cute.
I've bought about 2 dozen wooden puzzles off Temu and haven't been disappointed with any of them yet. I know there are some people that are against them for their own reasons. I haven't had an issue with quality or lost packages.
The "special shapes" you are looking for are called "whimsy". That might make your search easier.
I am not really into wooden puzzles, but well-known US-manufacturers are Liberty and Artifact. In the UK, Wentworth rules, and then there is Michèle Wilson from France.
I’ve never done any besides buffalo and I’d like some recommendations :)
I love the smaller independent brands - Chuffed Puzzles, Puzz, Ordinary Habit, fits, Werkshoppe, Blue Kazoo and Galison. When I have serious cash from holidays and gifts I do Artifact, but they're so pricey that in the future I'm going to probably join their puzzle club instead. If you go to Puzzledly they carry and list different brands that allow you to discover different brands.
Oh, and I have a favorite artist from the New York Puzzle Company whose puzzles I buy just for the artwork and unusual piece shapes - Victo Ngai. I'm not quite as big a fan of the quality itself since sometimes pieces will be stuck together, but her artwork is stunning and the unusual shape of the pieces themselves more than make up for it. They're such fun to put together and her artwork is just so fantastic.
I've also done Jiggy and Lantern Press and really enjoyed those as well although these for me have been harder to do.
Look up "independent puzzle brands" and that should get you articles listing some of the less-known brands. I will often learn about these then watch for sales on the websites, discounts for new subscribers and I will sometimes buy used if I find a good deal or can't get a puzzle I really want another way.
I don't really have one brand I'm loyal to but base my choices on artist and subject itself. I love trying different brands and for me that's almost half the fun.
Ravensburger is my go-to. Not really a fan of White Mountain. For quality, a Charles Dickens-themed puzzle from Lawrence King was probably the nicest puzzle I ever put together.
Schmidt is one of my favorite brands, perfect fit, zero dust, beautiful colors. ( German brand, a thousand times better quality than Ravensburger nowadays) .
Pomegranate, Cobble Hill. JaCaRou and Art & Fable are my favorites. Werkshoppe and Heye are really good also. A lot depends on what kind of image appeals to you.
see wiki faq: Best/Favourite/Recommended puzzle brands
Would love to know which ones you’ve done and why you chose the brand you did!
Fantasypuzzles from https://fantasypuzzles.com/ ! Their quality is simply first class.
Other means I have done Wentworth, Artifact, and Nautilus. I like Wentworth and Nautilus for the relatively matte finish. Artifact is a bit too glossy. I have a Peaceful wooden puzzle that I am looking forward to do. I'll try Liberty as soon as I see the image I love!
Oooh you have such a nice wooden puzzle resume!! This is great to know… I never realized how much I don’t like glossy puzzles until this sub so I appreciate this insight.🤣
Also this might be weird, but every time I go on Liberty’s website I try and see if I can find a puzzle you would like. LOL.
I have been on the Liberty websites many times, and so far no hit. If I am spending money on wooden, the image has gotta be special. The one that comes close is one of the holiday puzzles.
StumpCraft is wonderful (Canada).
Oooh I just looked this brand up and it reminds me a lot of Liberty! And they ship to the US. Might have to try one out. 😍 Thank you for answering!!
Yes love stumpcraft! My favorite is: Not Easily Phased.
I haven’t done any wooden puzzles but I voted “other” because I wanted to see the results. Just wanted to let you know I’m not withholding any top secret awesome brands from you 😂
This made me laugh. 😂 I probably should’ve made a “see results” option… LOL!!
I’ve done one Liberty Puzzles puzzle (Rebecca Campbell’s the Menagerie) and just ordered two more of her puzzles. But besides her work, I don’t really like the Liberty artwork. Nautilus has great artwork, but is more expensive than Liberty. Anyone have a preference for one or the other? Why?
I don't like many of Liberty's art, I like Nautilus and the only reason I didn't get more is because of the price. I also like Artifact but the pieces are more glossy than I like. I need to try their Ecru line. I like Wentworth but only because of their images. I also tried a couple of Russian brands like DaVici and Unidragon but I don't care for their images. You could consider joining the wooden puzzle club that I have heard good things about.
The Hoefnagel club that elisewong18 mentions is really great -- it's a wooden puzzle rental service that lets you try out many different brands. There is also a Facebook group called "Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle Club" where wooden puzzles are discussed in great detail, and people post pictures of various brands.
My favourite wooden puzzles …. Fantasypuzzles from https://fantasypuzzles.com/ . Premium quality ! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’m in Canada and love StumpCraft puzzles.
Ooh, I'm in Canada too! I'll check them out.
I have completed 2 Liberty puzzles and have 1 more ordered. I agree the artwork is not my favorite, but the 2 I completed are now framed. Would love to try Michelle Wilson!
Last year I went on a wooden puzzle binge after getting a Unidragon puzzle as a gift for Christmas. I bought several more on sale and loved them.
I decided to shell out for a “fancy” wooden puzzle and bought Liberty Puzzles - Sunset: Pool of London…and I hated it. Didn’t bother finishing.
My biggest issue was that the pieces didn’t click, fit, or give any kind of feedback that they went together. It was completely unsatisfying.
I know wooden puzzles don’t fit the same way as regular ones do, but where the Unidragon puzzles had many pieces that “attached” so you could move small sections together at a time, you could only tell pieces for the London puzzle fit by lining them up visually. I found it absolutely miserable and difficult to work with and eventually just gave up because I wasn’t having any fun.
That all being said, are there wooden puzzle brands where the pieces will “fit” together in some way like the Unidragon/knockoffs on Amazon? I would love to support more puzzle brands but am afraid of spending a lot of money and being disappointed again.
Those who have experience with wooden puzzles, could you please comment on these separate designs, I have larger boards in mind 1000+ pieces.
Wooden puzzles have a rather loose fit, somewhat like cardboard ones. You can still tell easily if they fit, but the whole board doesn't really stay together on its own, maybe even less so than normal ones.
Wooden puzzles that are thicker and somewhat more difficult to connect. There is a clear "click" when they do. Most importantly the large number of joined pieces stay together on their own. For example, upon finishing you can carefully lift the entire board by its edges.
20ish years ago I did a couple of puzzles, which were like number 2 above. Now I purchased a Trefl one and it was nearly not a nice (like number 1).
Can you still get quality wooden puzzles (number 2)? Which brands, maybe even which models specifically? Thanks.
Just finished a Fantasy Puzzle ( https://fantasypuzzles.com/ ) and wow! The quality is amazing. The pieces fit together perfectly and they feel so nice in your hand. Definitely some of the best wooden puzzles out there.
Wentworths - I really like the quality of their puzzles.
I was coming here to say Wentworth as well. Unidragon and Wentworth are the only two brands that I have experience with. I had no idea that Liberty puzzles didn't "fit" together.
My favourite brand too. And each piece is totally unique.
Oooh cool, I will check this out! Do you have a favorite you would recommend?
I’m a fan of PuzzleLab from Canada. There’s no click as you describe but it’s very easy to tell if the pieces fit together. Also excellent quality!
I don't know how good they are, but Ravensburger now has a line of wooden puzzles.
Bewilderness also has some interesting puzzles, like geometric ones. (https://bewilderness-puzzles.com/)
I know this may sound like the epitome of puzzling snobbery but I don’t just buy any puzzle. I need to be sure the pieces are quality. I’ve had some rough experiences where there are truly identical edge pieces, to pieces loosely fitting (even though they are in the right spot(proven by the image of course)) to pieces that are just crappy and weak. I’m a big fan of the big ones, Caeco, Buffalo, and The New Yorker. Just bought my first Clementoni. Any other brands you trust or more importantly don’t trust? (That was so long, sorry people that made it this.)
My favourite brands so far, based on those I completed:
Brands I'd look into:
Brands popular on this sub, but not my particular favourites, due to the 'plasticky' feel of their pieces:
A lot of them are European brands because these are the most affordable/available for me.
I find Heye very hit and miss. Some of the pieces fit extremely well, but then others are super loose. I also don't kike that sometimes they have posters and somwtimes not. Really annoying. I think every puzzle should have 1 and not a teeny tiny one. Gallison's puzzles are weird too. Some of them have lovely thick, super well fitting pieces and then others are extremely loose and thin. The thin ones tend to be pretty glossy as well, which I don't like. It's hard to see the pieces. Even among the Michael Storrings puzzles there's such a huge range of piece quality. I quite like Cobble Hill puzzles. Super fun shapes and good quality. Not extremely tight fitting, but really good regardless.
Galison just changed the piece shape. They had some distinction between the 2x2 cut (long and skinny vs short and fat) now they are the typical ribbon cut. The 2x2 cut they had before made sorting extremely easy for my younger kids and they could do the puzzles easily.
The bad about galison is that foil art. Its a horrible glare and the few my kids (older) have done is just frustrating. They have one left, and while the love of frank lloyd wright is there, the hate of the foil is overpowering. (galison is also mudpuppy and the good puzzle co).
Michael Storrings is a fun artist but his art does not transfer to puzzles very well IMO. I have a France loving kid and the one puzzle they did (french scene) was frustrating. Lesson : watercolor art does not make good puzzles.
Ravensburger all the way!
ravensburger is my go to. the big win is NO GLARE! plus whatever type of cardstock they use is amazing.
Die hard Rabensburger fan. Did a lot of 5,000 pieces and even a few bigger ones and never been disappointed. The pieces are interlocking so good you can almost lift the puzzle like a sheet when it’s done.
Cobble Hill is my favorite brand. The pieces aren't flimsy feeling and I like the matte finish.
Me too. And the fun shapes.
I'm very happy with the quality of Pomegranate and Art & Fable.
What are y’all favorite puzzle brands that aren’t ravensburger?
Since moving to Europe the answer has totally changed! Recent brands I love: Enjoy, Bambelle, Pieces and Peace, Sulo, Trevell, Reverie, Roovi, Gibsons, Piece & Love, so many more!
What did you prefer before?
I’m from the US so I used to buy a lot of Galison, Genuine Fred (still love but hard to find), and Ravensburger. You could say I’ve been introduced to a world of premium puzzles and I won’t go back.
Cherry Pazzi, Buffalo Games, Cobble Hill and Ravensburger (minus the dust). IMO only.
i wouldn’t really call cherry pazzi, whose puzzles are mostly made of ai generated images, a great brand
You have the images and the physical aspect of the pieces to consider when rating a brand as being "the best".
Cherry Pazzi gets consistent, high praise for the latter. As for the images, not all of them are AI generated and many puzzlers won't care about the image source if they like it.
Paperblanks, Anatolian, vintage Springbok come to mind!
I love Cobble Hill and Blue Kazoo. I really like eeBoo( I wish they had matte finishes, though).
Enjoy
I’m a stickler for quality when it comes to puzzles. Other than Ravensburger, what brands have you found to be the best in terms of quality? (No frayed pieces, thick backing, good colors, sure fits).
My best brands so far, based on those I completed (in alphabetical order, to avoid bias):
Brands I'd look into:
A lot of them are European brands because these are the most affordable/available for me.
I’ve done a fair few Castorlands, Heyes, Educas and Schmidts in my time, and they are all good puzzles. Different styles (Educa can be quite loose and have unusual piece shapes for a grid cut) but find them all excellent.
Re: New York Puzzle Company, I bought two of their NASA collection puzzles I had been eyeing for a long time. The quality of the individual pieces and image was nice, but the pieces fit so loosely that I couldn’t even pick up a few pieces I had put together to move them as a unit. It was so frustrating. I can’t say I won’t buy another because they really have some beautiful images, but I was really disappointed.
I did one of their puzzles so far, bought back in 2020 from store in the UK, quality and fit were spot on! But that's only one puzz, likely older stock, so not much of a reference...
Schmidt will give you top quality, very similar, slightly above Ravensburger. And I would second White Mountain. If you like their images you will love their quality.
Pomegrante, for me, is top of the line. I also like Buffalo and White Mountain. Those are not as thick as RB or Pomegranate, but they are solid and dependable.
I am working my first Pomegranate right now and really enjoying the quality and the image (Floral Peacock). I’m in the PNW and didn’t realize they are in Portland, OR until I picked up a couple at a local shop and the owner was telling me about how much he likes the brand
I favor White Mountain for its quality of construction and eclectic offerings. The fit of pieces is good but not the best I've seen.
I also like Bits and Pieces for its construction and quality of fit in the pieces.
Not the original commenter, but I enjoyed Flowers very much: https://www.etsy.com/listing/534857499/flowers-1000-piece-jigsaw-puzzle-for
Feast. It was 10/10. When it was done i picked up the puzzle like it was a sheet of paper and brought it to my husband. It was perfect. Never even had a puzzle that locked together that well
Cloudberries Feast – Colourful Food Jigsaw Puzzle for Adults (1000 Pieces). Detailed Modern Puzzle for Foodies Featuring Tasty Snacks on a Challenging Tablecloth Design. Made in Europe. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08V19VC27/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_2V7XHX72QPRZNW188Y0K
I LOVE the texture. I think it comes down to personal prefetence. I couldnt even finish sorting an eeboo puzzle i tried because the pueces were so waxy they felt laminated. Ymmv ya know
I tend to rotate the same few companies like Ravensburger, Gibson, Corner Piece and Bits& Pieces that I enjoy but one of them (Bits and Pieces) has unconventionally shaped pieces which I come to really enjoy. So thought maybe I should branch out a bit and was wondering what companies other people enjoy and why.
Photos attached of a set I recently completed: 4 x 1000 Pieces Puzzle Friendly Folk By Kay Lamb Shannon by Bits and Pieces
I recently discovered Vermont Christmas Company. It’s a great under appreciated brand.
My favorites are Art and Fable as well as Unified Pieces. They both have a satin coating that makes the pieces really luxurious.
Ravensburger seems to be the best widely available puzzle. The price of them put you into the realm of a lot of brands though. If you’re willing to wait for shipping, there are a lot of great alternatives.
If you’re in Europe, you can get Schmidt puzzles. They’re very similar to Ravensburger.
Ravensburger is actually a German company and widely available in the UK. I like their puzzles, they can be easily found in charity shops over here. Schmidt is solid too for sure!
At any rate, Unified Pieces and Art and Fable looks fantastic but may have to be for special occasions considering postage and customs etc. But managed to find a few Vermont Christmas Company ones in the UK. Also thanks for your input to my growing list of puzzle manufacturers!
Cobble Hill, Bits & Pieces and Buffalo. I love their consistency. I know exactly the quality to expect with each puzzle.
I know many think of Ravensburger as the best puzzle brand, but I've done dozens of them and they are hit or miss. When they hit they are a perfect dream. When they miss they are a false fitting, loose fitting nightmare.
Those are some really good suggestions. Have not heard of them before (I'm UK) but have managed to find some online now. Cobble Hill also has those funky cut pieces going on and Buffalo has some amazing motives.
I have not had a Ravensburger that has disappointed me quality wise but have not done a huge variety as I favour other brands whenever I can.
I like the wonky piece shapes, too. That's a second reason why I love Cobble Hill and B&P.
I tried a Ravensburger and while I liked the quality overall, HOLY HELL the amount of dust that emerged from that bag! I literally had to take a mini vac to my board to clean it all up
Yeah Ravensburger is my favourite brand but gosh, the puzzle dust. It would be so great if they could figure out how to get rid of it from the final package.
I have done tons ranging from their kids puzzles to many 1000 pc boxes. I’ve never had loose fitting puzzle pieces from Ravensburger like another user mentioned. They have always connected well enough that I could lift entire sections up without it breaking.
I just had one - i think it was called "Vintage Paris" or something like that, and it is a loose fitting nightmare. So disappointing because I usually like Ravensburger - you couldn't move any of the pieces around because they fell apart if you looked at them funny.
I just started doing puzzles about 6 months ago and so far my very favorites are Pomegranate and New York Puzzle Company. I like a lot of the others mentioned too.
Edited to add that I also really enjoy eeBoo puzzles and have been lucky enough to find quite a few at thrift stores. They are an odd size though and don’t fit my board but I still get them and just break into sections.
Yes! New York Puzzle Company is my favorite! I love the artwork options and love love love the quality and cuts.
I couldn't stop thinking about Unified Pieces after looking though their website and I've actually managed to find a good deal on eBay now (which I never expected). Just wanted to say thanks again for this wonderful suggestion ☺️
I love all the Magic Puzzles!
