Dangers of Reefback Leviathans in Subnautica

TL;DR Reefback leviathans are harmless creatures in Subnautica. They pose no danger to players and can be considered a symbol of safety.

Harmless Nature

Reefback leviathans are known for being completely harmless, unlike other leviathan-class creatures in the game [1:2]. Players often find them soothing and enjoy their presence due to their gentle giant nature [3:2]. Despite their intimidating size, they do not attack or pose any threat to players [1:8].

Safety Indicator

Many players use reefbacks as an indicator of safe areas. Generally, if you see reefbacks, you are likely in a safe spot without hostile leviathans nearby [1:1][4:1]. However, there are exceptions where reefbacks and reapers might overlap slightly in certain areas [1:11], so caution is advised.

Resource Opportunities

Reefbacks offer opportunities for resource gathering. Players can mine barnacles on their backs for valuable materials like gold and silver [1:10][2:5]. The only minor danger associated with reefbacks is getting too close to their backs and being pricked by tiger plants [1:12].

Presence in Various Biomes

While reefbacks generally indicate safety, they can sometimes spawn in shallow waters or glitch above the water [5:1][5:2]. Their presence doesn't necessarily guarantee the absence of predators, as reapers can follow players into areas where reefbacks are located [4:6]. Nonetheless, many players feel comforted by the calls of reefbacks and associate them with safety [4:7].

Overall, reefback leviathans are one of the least dangerous creatures in Subnautica, providing both a sense of security and opportunities for resource collection.

Ahhh. Reefback leviathan. The only leviathan class creature that is harmless

There are four others. Reaper, ghost, emperor, and sea treader. Sea treaders are the next nicest ones. Don’t get in their way or get too close. Reapers HATE seamoths and other electronics and will target. Ghosts show up at the craters edge and in deeper waters. Emperors are very rare. All are hostile

That there's a reefback leviathan. Theyre harmless and are one of my favorite creatures in the game. The baby ones are really cute.

Also word of advice the reefbacks are actually a way to tell if youre in a safe spot or not. Its not all encompassing but if you can see a reefback youre generally not in any danger.

In a future game they should have this MASSIVE reefback that you can build on. I think thatd be pretty neat.

Does anyone else fear reefback more than other leviathans?

Posted by jimraynor0 · in r/subnautica · 6 years ago

I know they are completely harmless. But I still want to avoid them. On the other hand, the slimmer ones aren’t that scary to me. I was scared the first time I saw them, but that’s more of a mix of surprise and the void around them. I feel they are not that different from any other monsters in other games after a while.

I have a base going in the grassy plateaus, right below 2-3 reefbacks. I love the muffled roars they make when I'm inside the base. I'm always a little worried one will spawn or swim too close to my base and mess it up though.

They can spawn in the shallows on the rare occasion.

Also note that they are programmed to head toward the center of the map (which is the shallows) if you start fighting them.

I have probably chased at least 8 reapers from various biomes and they always ended up in the shallows.

How big would a leviathan need to break through the shell of a reefback?

Posted by The-Inferno-Llama24 · in r/subnautica · 2 years ago

I the pda entry for the reefback it says that the reefback has no predator (please excuse my spelling) because it has a very hard top shell and that any predator that was big enough too break through the reefbacks shell probably went extinct a long time ago. I am courius (again sorry for my poor spelling) how big people think the leviathan would be. Because I don't have alot of creativity. If someone who is good at drawing would want to draw a leviathan that could break the shell of a reefback. I would love to see it. This is also my first reddit post ever so I don't really know how this works. I was just courius (spelling) Thats all have a nice rest of your day.

Probably, the "supposed extinct predator" was the gargantuan leviathan, so i'd go for that one

Curious (single vowel comes first. You'll get there!) I think they'd have to at least double in size. Right now I can only see the baby reefbacks getting taken down by reapers. Reefbacks are so wide and most leviathan have pretty little mouths. Maybe the sea dragon could hunt them as is but they live in different biomes.

Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in this region..

Posted by Alarming-Leather-701 · in r/subnautica · 2 months ago
post image

When I saw this, I just went oh okay! Thats fine. Because not all leviathans are carnivores (reefers, for example, are homies)

Then everything got very very dark and I saw ghosts and reapers. I think the scariest thing was realizing holy fuck, reapers could be anywhere.

They’re not scary to me as a player because their ai is.. well- yknow. I actually find them kind of cute. But I could just imagine our protag’s horror at this creature that’s big enough to eat his ship whole, and now he has to try and get back into safe territory— using the very thing that’s drawing so much attention!!

And we don’t see it for practical reasons in the game, but realistically our protag would have the attention of every leviathan we see. Dozens would be attacking him- because the ship or our propeller is NOT quiet. Even if they didn’t use sound as a basis, it disturbs the water significantly in a way others didn’t. And the creatures CAN see, and we have a big ol’ flashlight on our propeller. all in all, protag would be swarmed before he knew what was coming.

This entire game is so much scarier when you stop looking at it through the player’s perspective and look at it through our protag’s.

Reapers use echolocation so they would absolutely see us as soon as we are in the range but I don't think they would swarm the player as we aren't a threat or a normal prey.

1 upvotes on reddit
Alarming-Leather-701 · OP · 2 months ago

Doesn’t the PDA state reapers are very territorial? I may be remembering that wrong- but even if it doesn’t I would be surprised if they weren’t. The other larger creatures we see in the game tend to be territorial, and the moment they spot us in any capacity in the normal biomes they try to take a chomp. Whether that’s a curious chomp like a shark or whether it’s a defense one for territory we don’t know. After all, there are a very very small amount of larger species, I wouldn’t be shocked if they- out of territorial instinct- ended up ending all but the most efficient, skilled hunters that could evade them or ward them off.

Still, if a human is dropped into a shark pit, sure, you may not be the normal prey. Depending on where you go, the sharks may not even know what you are. But you’re fussing and gaining a lot of attention, I don’t imagine they’d ignore that.

Please don’t mind all the headcannons I snuck in here, I love these guys so dearly and love thinking about how they would work practically, outside of the game as in lore 💙💙

1 upvotes on reddit
Black_Tusk25 · 2 months ago

I just read the pda on the wiki and there is no reference about territoriality. I think it is just a game mechanic to avoid getting pegged randomly.

PSA: You CAN destroy the Leviathan's guns (and how to stop them from respawning)

Posted by Haardrale · in r/helldivers2 · 3 months ago
post image

Each combat fin takes three EAT shots to be destroyed

Given they don't stop spawning, I've resorted to dealing just enough damage to destroy the main fins. That takes care of the godawful cannons and leaves the Leviathan roaming around basically disabled, except for the puny bomblets it drops straight beneath him.

This in turn will also prevent another one to spawn unless the damaged one is despawned (sometimes happens, but I've had games with disabled leviathans roaming for 20+ minutes), giving me a way, WAY easier time on squids.

Only aim at the main fins to destroy the cannons without downing the Leviathan.

It can happen, but they usually take their sweet, sweet time before riding into the sunset (or possibly bleeding out all those 15k HP).
In my experience, once I defanged all the leviathans in a mission, I've easily gone 10-15+ minutes seeing the broken leviathans still flying above.

At the very least, it's faster than completely killing them, and keeps them out of the battlefield way longer.

AI Answer

🤖

What are the dangers of reefback leviathans in subnautica

Key Considerations Regarding Reefback Leviathans in Subnautica:

  1. Size and Behavior: Reefback Leviathans are large, passive creatures that roam the ocean. They are not aggressive and pose no direct threat to players.

  2. Environmental Impact: While they are harmless, their sheer size can obstruct your view and navigation, potentially leading to accidents or collisions with other creatures or structures.

  3. Ecosystem Role: Reefbacks play a role in the ecosystem by hosting smaller creatures and providing a habitat for various life forms. They contribute to the biodiversity of the ocean.

  4. Sound and Visual Effects: Their presence can create ambient sounds and visual effects that may be unsettling for some players, but these are not dangerous.

  5. Interaction: Players can interact with Reefbacks by swimming close to them, and they can be scanned for data, which can be beneficial for completing the in-game database.

Takeaways:

  • No Direct Threat: Reefback Leviathans are safe to encounter and do not pose a danger to players.
  • Navigation Awareness: Be mindful of their size when navigating to avoid potential collisions.
  • Enjoy the Experience: Take the opportunity to observe and appreciate these majestic creatures as part of the underwater ecosystem.

In summary, while Reefback Leviathans are not dangerous, they add to the immersive experience of Subnautica's rich marine life.
