Emilia Perez

Ganja and Hess
The Mack
Cooley High
Across 110th Street is one of the great films of the 70s
The same thing happens with books: many new novels are just fanfiction of something successful, marketed via algorithmic tropes. Happy ending, found family hashtag hashtag.
Not if you read literary fiction.
I read primarily literary fiction. It may interest you to know that one of the books nominated for the Women's Prize in fiction this year is self,-insert fanfiction of the TV show adapted from Dan Simmons's book, The Terror.
That or essays/essays disguised as novels by celebrities who explain how horrible their parents were. I mean, if writing helps, do that, and if people read it, all the better. It just won't be me.
For those interested in a longer read on this subject, I recommend Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture, by Kyle Chayka.
Really like his New Yorker column too on a variety of things in the tech world
Thanks! I’ve added this to my TBR list.
Idk I feel like it was mostly disliked lol
Nah, disliked by general audiences yes, but it was getting gassed up wayyyy too hard by critics and the whole film industry for it to be anywhere else but this spot, with directors like Del Toro and Villeneuve absolutely loving it. Hell, James Cameron said he saw it three times. And that’s not even mentioning it being one of the most nominated movies of all time, and every headline about it being mired in controversy. There was a HUGE industry push behind Emilia Perez, and the stark divide with the audience reception definitely means it belongs here
Kung Fu Panda 4.
Not rly controversial, just lukewarm reception
It’s showing up on your comment on my screen as well. Might check the rules for r/whatisit to see if I can post it there.
It’s 1000% this, pure adoration from seemingly the entire industry, hatred from audiences, and one of the most controversial Oscar campaigns ever
The Apprentice feels quite fitting for this, especially given the wider context of the year.
I like this one bc nobody was willing to talk about it
I feel like this automatically keeps it out of the disliked categories
If we compare to its ancestor, Gladiator II
before you all say this is universally despised, please see the 13 academy award nominations and initial film festival response
The whole dinosaurs roam free was such a great concept but sadly wasnt used that well
I see so if you were to fix it, how would you do it?
I think the idea of people selling dinosaurs was decent, poorly executed since its very slow in the movie and they show only 3 times atleast on JW movies, which is horrible and great since these scenes dont affect much of the lore and because they are LONNNG, like 2hrs of pure "yeah lets sell this dinosaur even tho we know they kill each other and people and are overpowered" could be a great idea if something went wrong, we see that on the indoraptor scene, but who opened the door? An greedy guy, not indoraptor, on dominion Claire does most of the work with Owen BY FREEING THE DINOSAURUS BUT NOT THE DINOS THEMSELFS, i would be great if they broke free and started massacring everyone
Mainland dinosaurs, and I would fix it by having them be mostly spread out in scattered populations across the world's more remote and uninhabited places as otherwise people would just kill them, with encounters in urban areas being due to black markets finding these locations and taking species from them, alongside the smaller species like Microceratus and Compsognathus becoming cosmopolitan and fusing with the ecosystem.
If Rebirth still had to take place on Ile San Hubert, I would make the excuse that a majority of the scattered populations have been found and are placed under quarantine and are patrolled heavily to stop the lucrative black market, urban dinosaurs and for scientific study, with Ile San Hubert being one of them however it is one of the few islands and it is far enough away from any landmass that you would have to be intentionally looking for it to find it, so they just put a restricted air space radio signal and that fence and never mentioned it.
The Cgi was amazing
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Is beloved
It's good, but not close to being as good as it's predecessor
FALL GUY. if you saw it, you loved it.
Deadpool and Wolverine. Wasn’t great, but certainly more people seemed to like it than dislike it.
I fucking despised that movie
Deadpool and Wolverine was the absolute "beach read" of this whole decade. Not groundbreaking by any means, yet fun as all hell, but kept the audience engaged tip to tail.
You’re right: all my friends and I enjoyed it, but Justin Baldoni didn’t.
The Substance
I think this has to be the answer
Conclave
I’m essentially just looking for media with a posh vibe, a display of wealth and an eccentric lifestyle. Yachts, mansions, drinking, partying are all factors that I’m looking for. I want to find a film that doesn’t insist upon itself but to be honest I will watch anything with this vibe.
Also I’m not exclusively looking for a specific genre so I’m happy for any genre of film to be suggested, it’s purely just the vibe.
(Also happy for series recommendations)
The Great Gatsby (2013)
Wall Street

Catch Me If You Can
Any and all Tarkovsky films made in the Soviet Union, especially Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Stalker
Tarkovsky is a god among directors. If you have the patience. I think Russian cinema is a lot like their literature. It requires patience, but will reward you if you fully engage.
There are many great Spciet films. It's not just Trakovsky and Eisenstein.
To name some I personally like:
Been the stomping ground of two of the most influential voices in international cinema: Eisenstein and Tarkovsky.
For them alone, it's worth exploring.
I just watched Come and See the other day. You can find it in full on YouTube. It is a harrowing experience with some really devasting shots but a great film. Today the lead actor, just a teen at the time of filming, is a shill for Putin's war in Ukraine, which is unfortunately ironic, given that Come and See is often cited among the truly great anti-war movies, even better than Full Metal Jacket in my opinion.
Man with a Movie Camera is my favorite. Great filmmakers but not having the freedom of speech for many years hits it’s films hard.
I recognize Battleship Potemkin, Alexander Nevsky, and that's about it. I'm not an expert, but it definitely feels like the older stuff is a lot more heavily commented on.
Besides those two I also recognized Stalker and Solaris (how didnt you recognize those!), The Cranes are Flying, White Sun of the Desert and idk maybe theres another one i heard of. Wouldn't hurt that OP name the films....
I must confess that the pictures reminded me of how limited my knowledge of Soviet cinema is. But while not on the level of Battleship Potemkin, I was haunted by “The Dawns Here Are Quiet.”
Ivan the Terrible.
Battleship Potemkin.
Alexander Nevsky.
War and Peace.
10 Days that Shook the World
War & Peace is my favorite thus far!
Saw all four parts in one sitting (with three 20-minute intermissions) at the cinema last year, a true masterpiece of epic cinema.
Mostly Tarkovsky, but I've got "Come And See" ready to watch. Looking forward to it
After you see Come and See you should give The Ascent(1977) a try. Directed by Klimovs wife just before her tragic death. It's a similar story of partisans behind the lines and you can see the obvious influence it left on her husband in Come and See.
Enjoy
So, google Andrei Tarkovsky, then find his list of films.
Then put a blindfold on and pick any movie and your random choice won't be wrong and you will love the movie.
It's on YouTube, so very easy to find. I prefer Mirror, but Stalker is extraordinary
I admit The Mirror is one of those films that made me feel kinda stupid, I only got it on a surface level. I attributed that to being an American living in the 21st century than a Russian of the 20th.
Perhaps you can answer this. In The Mirror when the squad leader is having them train with weapons during the war he takes off his hat and his head is throbbing. Why?
Potemkin is one of the best movies ever made
Stalker was an incredible film. Tarkovsky was one of the best of all time.
Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace is magnificent

What are the must-watch films of the 2024
As of my last update, I can't provide specific titles for must-watch films of 2024 since that information is not available. However, here are some general tips for identifying must-watch films in any upcoming year:
Film Festivals: Keep an eye on major film festivals like Sundance, Cannes, and Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) for early buzz on standout films.
Director and Cast: Look for films by acclaimed directors or featuring popular actors. Their previous works often indicate quality.
Genre Trends: Pay attention to emerging trends in genres. For example, if horror or superhero films are gaining traction, those might be worth watching.
Critical Acclaim: Check reviews from critics and audiences on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb once the films are released.
Awards Season: Films that receive nominations or wins during awards season (like the Oscars) are often considered must-watch.
By keeping these considerations in mind, you can curate a list of must-watch films for 2024 as the year progresses!
