What Happens After the Time Skip in My Hero Academia (MHA)?

Understanding the Timeline and Time Skip

In My Hero Academia, the timeline is quite compressed, with most events occurring within a short span of time. The story primarily takes place over about two years, from when Deku starts at U.A. High School to the current arcs [1:5]. There isn't a significant time skip in the traditional sense, like those seen in "Naruto" or "One Piece." Instead, the series progresses with minimal gaps between major events [3:6].

Post-War Developments

After the Paranormal Liberation War arc, the story transitions into the Dark Hero arc, where Deku leaves U.A. to protect his friends and confronts various villains on his own. This period showcases Deku's growth as he learns to master One For All further, albeit under great personal strain [2:4]. The narrative then moves towards the Final War arc, which is set in the second year of high school but does not involve a formal time skip [1:11].

Character Development and Plot Progression

Some fans feel that the rapid progression of events has left little room for character development and world-building, particularly for supporting characters [2:1]. Others argue that more time should have been spent exploring the societal changes post-All Might and the implications of the heroes' struggles [3:2]. Despite these criticisms, the series continues to focus on the main plotlines, such as the conflict with the League of Villains and Deku's journey to becoming the greatest hero.

Fan Opinions on Time Skips

The idea of a time skip is a common topic among fans, with some advocating for it to allow characters to mature and the world to develop more naturally [4:1]. However, others believe that the current pacing is appropriate given the ongoing conflicts and the urgency of the heroes' mission [2:4]. The lack of a significant time skip aligns with Horikoshi's storytelling style, focusing on immediate challenges rather than long-term developments [3:4].

Conclusion

While My Hero Academia does not feature a traditional time skip, the story continues to evolve through intense arcs that push character development and plot forward. The series remains focused on Deku's growth and the overarching battle against villainy, maintaining a fast-paced narrative that keeps fans engaged.

For some time now I've been thinking about how clumped all the MHA story is, with literally everything happening in ONE YEAR, and letting little to no information about what happened in the last two years of the class besides like two pages.

So I tried making a way to rearrange the important events of the series without adding too fanficky things. Just changing some dates and little details that I think would've been pretty nice on the actual story

So tell me if you'd like to see the whole thing I did and maybe I'll do a post going through all the changes I thought

This is actually a great idea. It would really have been more fun if we have been able to see the UA curriculum for second and third years too. Also this way Midoriya would have lost OFA in the third year which means he would have been able to do some years of proper hero work with his quirk before retiring.

The fear of doing a time skip was really holding back the story, hell not even a time skip just character growth.

Cause if you think about it in ONE YEAR they perfected their quirks, changed costumes like 3 times, went on a war, etc...

And Deku is the most baffling thing there, cause In two months of having OFA he stopped exploding his body, and by the 8th he started using powers no other user could...

Correction: Not everything happens in the first year. After Endeavor agency the Class A should be second years, but the PLA happens, so they can't advance forward.

Me personally. I don't really care about it all happening in such a small time frame.

Firstly, because it adds to the pressure Deku has of mastering OFA and why he still couldn't at the end.

Secondly, because I have seen other anime where the amount of time passed is extremely minimal. The 4th great shinobi war from Naruto was 200 chapters long but only takes up 2 days in the universe. The straw hats have only known each for a few months pre time skip, which was 500 chapters long. Hell, a full year hasn't passed post time skip either because Luffy is still the same age. Mha, taking place within a year and a few months isn't a problem in my eyes.

Not exactly. 1st year is from april to april, given that endeavour agency happens in january, it would be more accurate to say that after the war arc is in the second year. So yeah the vigialntee arc and the final arc happen in technically the second year although the class was never allowed to move up a year because of what happened in march (the war)

1 upvotes on reddit
MrM1t0 · OP · 6 months ago

I understand what you are going for with the pressure thing but in the whole series I didn't feel like he struggled to master OFA, it felt more like someone said "hey, do this" and he did without problem in like one week

The thing is that in MHA we get the whole academia thing and they didn't explore the concept more, that is the reason I feel like it doesn't really work here. Because in other series you could get a small time frame and it'd still be fine in the end, because they don't get a set time frame to compare like the 3 years of study compared to the one year and some months that the whole thing happens, and the fact that in a series called my hero ACADEMIA you would expect them to graduate in the end to get a sense of realization.

So idk, I'm happy with you enjoying it but it doesn't really stick with me.

The very beginning and the 10 months Deku took to train before UA’s Entrance Exam happens in the last year of middle school. So that’s really just 1 year there.

Then we get when he starts his first year and everything until the first part of the war ends. That’s another year.

After that point they’re already in their second year of HS but they haven’t started any classes because the war is still ongoing. Then the war doesn’t end until a bit after Bakugos Bday which is in April.

So the timeline is really 2 years and 4 months, but the issue is it all starts back in middle school not in HS.

Well, if we take that as part of the timeline then the timeline is 12 years cause the first chapter has a 4 years old deku

Izuku started his journey when he was in Middle School and that’s when the actual story starts. Why wouldn’t the start of the series automatically count????

Meh, I'd hate the idea of it going ALL THREE years, at most I'd add a few months so that PLW, Dark Hero and Final War happen a little over halfway thru 2nd year rather than the first term, and use the extra months to better build the mutant subplot and flesh out class dynamics, potentially another story arc (I'm leaning towards a modified version of the Humarise stuff in WHM)

The shorter timescale has never really bothered me much tbh

I think it should have definitely still be milked more deku had waay too fast power ups characters from both sides get killed off and none of the both casts has much time to morn about them.

Class 1-A is still dry with no content. (Execept for shoji who's finally got some content to his character even if it's just some excuse to give spinner a rival.)

Hell nejiri got her first and last backstory at the very finals that's speaks alot about how rushed this is.

I was willing to write it off due to horis heath problems and wanting to be done with the manga, but the fact he immediately jumped into a new manga kinda made me lose respect for him. The whole reason you nixxed a bunch of shit and rushed stuff in mha and then you just start something new?

1 upvotes on reddit
Otherwise_Arrival_47 · 3 months ago

Guess hori wasn't about that grind , it's been like 10 years of MHA hasn't it ? Because I still remember it was 2012 when I first heard of it or something.

Looking back at it then looking at the fact that it's took hori 10 years to make MHA and there is still ALOT of missing content it's makes you wonder what did he even do in all those 10 years while I won't lie tye guy is cooking when it's comes to drawing.

But written ? Nejiri entier backstory is half baked excuse for fan favorite character

It wouldn't have made sense overall especially for the LOV. Considering the state of Japan and the world, it would be terrible for them to not take the chance to attack when Japan was at its weakest. If they waited, they were only allowing the heroes to fully regroup and get stronger and for society to slowly rebuild itself back. If it did happen, the tragic impact caused by the Paranormal Liberation War wouldn't have been that huge.

Padding the story with even longer time skips wouldn't make much of a difference. On the other hand, if we got more story arcs set before the PLF War and between that and the Final War, that would give a lot of room for much more world-building and character development.

Things like fully fleshing out the heteromorph discrimination plotline (e.g. the Creature Rejection Clan stirring up trouble), government corruption (e.g. maybe the HPSC tries to get Deku under their thumb before the PLW Arc?), and properly exploring the different Quirks of OFA & their Vestiges' backstories.

For people saying we should skip 2nd year... this is a BAD BAD BAD idea. We have yet to see the real implications of All Might being gone. Though Horikoshi writes characters well, quite bluntly put, he sucks at world building. We saw the one case, the Overhaul case, but where is the rest of the villain team ups, where is the LoV and what are they plotting, where is the everyday panic of the people we keep hearing about (public scare when a huge monster like High End attacking doesnt count), how are the pros struggling with the new changes, etc....

Not only that, but what about the Todoroki family storyline. In 2nd year we should be seeing Shoto and Endeavor begin to have a real father-son relationship (hopefully internship). Also in 2nd year, the Hawks being a double agent plotline should be a big plot point to tackle.

Honestly, when I started this series, I was sure that it was going to be Harry Potter-esque in that the series follows Deku as he goes from year to year and finally graduates, but I don't know about that anymore. At this rate, if that were true, this series could be reaching 1000+ chapters by the time Deku finishes his 3rd Year. Considering Hori was planning on this series ending in just Vol. 30, I don't think that was ever really his plan

Maybe he'd just skip 2nd year altogether and kick off the plot in the beginning of the 3rd year. Still have heavy doubts that we're going to follow Deku as an adult pro-hero though. The name of this series is My Hero Academia, it's only logical that it'll end when Deku graduates.

23 upvotes on reddit
josh4220 · 6 years ago

and perhaps the story will continue after he graduates. Remember the story is about how Deku became the greatest superhero of all time. I doubt he accomplishes that the moment he graduates from school. I suspect there will be a continuation of MHA but with a different name like they did with Naruto

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't mind skipping their 2nd year.

Besides that I can see a time skip, because the rate it's going, we won't be in their second year until chapter 400 and while I love how much time we are spending in their school, we'll eventually run into repeating scenarios because of how the school setting it.

A friend of mine suggested that maybe we switch to shigarakis perspective for a couple of arcs and have time pass during then, so when we get back to class 1a, time would have passed

TLDR: I can see a time skip, but can understand a lack of one.

For second year I want it to go by faster but I want more internships happening. The big problem with the series right now, especially considering its in a Post All Might era, is a lack of world building. Between All Mights end and Endeavors beginning we have had months in MHA's timeline for internships to happen, and to showcase whats going on outside og UA... we got ONE case (Overhaul). Ok we got the little mini bad guy fight with Kirishima but that looked to be an average villain fight. It would have been cool to see a storyline for the quirk enhancing drug.

At the rate the series is going, it's necessary. It's over 200 chapters in and there's still an entire semester left in their first year. The problem is that nothing has really been done to set up for a time skip since Kamino because all of the hanging plotlines that have come between that event and now have gone nowhere.

The sports festival is a great mechanic to keep things academic but interact with the larger world and can be used to reflect the changing state of society while seeing characters overcome unusual challenges- one thing I would quite like since the cavalry battle was a lot of fun and there are team sports, if the sports festival got kids to make teams for the festival.

Also, people get invested when characters compete and just throw their dummies out the pram when they don't get the results they want (Joint training arc).

The current situation is really restrictive to the students being involved in important events, and a time skip might give them more freedom by allowing the situation to cool down, and give the students more authority and agency.

Hey guys! So I was a HUGE MHA fan back then right up to the season 4 finale. That was peak Anime for me back then and I loved every episode of the show. I even watched the movies or at least one of them (?). What I’m asking is should I keep going? I heard things here and there that the show actually got a bit worse and I didn’t really like season 5‘s beginning because it felt like a full stop with again another tournament they did. I would be happy if you could tell me if later on there are again moments like “United States of smash” or deku vs overhaul. No major spoilers please just a little teaser what I should expect from the later seasons. Thanks!

Time-traveling Izuku has successfully prevented the apocalypse, and saved or rehabilitated all the villains. ...He did get all of them, right?

Posted by Evyps · in r/BokunoheroFanfiction · 3 months ago

It was a hard-won battle, but thanks to his knowledge of the future Izuku was able to stop the villains from ever becoming villains in the first place. The LoV base was raided just before the USJ attacks could happen, with Shigaraki taken into protective custody. Toga was found wandering the streets and put into UA care. Dabi was given the help he needed, Stain was found, which meant Spinner was never given that catalyst, Overhaul was his first stop, and Izuku even managed to prevent Muscular from killing the water hose duo.

Yep, a job well done. But... He can't help feeling like he missed someone?

Meanwhile, Mr Compress, Magne and Mustard hold the first meeting of The New League of Thieves.

Time travel fix it, but only Iida, Kumogiri, Present Mic and Twice are aware of it.

Posted by Background-Sense-227 · in r/BokunoheroFanfiction · 2 months ago

The worst part is that whenever they try to tell someone about it, they are stopped by some unseen force and say something else, even mind reading doesn't work. Unaware of the others also having been sent back, each begin to try making their preferred future happen which leads to changes the others weren't expecting.

Firstly he kills Hawks before he can ever kill him, Twice then meets Toga much earlier and bonds with her, unintentionally sending her away from the path of snapping by allowing her to have his blood and having a genuine friendship. She doesn't become a hero or goes too U.A. but she also doesn't got to the League and becomes a member... Toga joined the MLA instead.

Iida tries to help Izuku get an early start on OFA and helping him get into shape before meeting All Might, however this had the unforseen domino effect of Izuku manifesting earlier in the sports festival, but also seems like he never saved Ochako from the zero pointer, it seems she is part of 1-B because of that while 1-A has to deal with Monoma. Iida also helped prevent his brother from being crippled by Stain, but notes that they aren't being taught by Aizawa for some reason.

Kumogiri tried to get his master's plan into motion earlier and exploit the advantage of future knowledge, he is able to convince Stain of joining and even gets Dabi to join the USJ raid, they even made a successful strike at the Yakuza early to get the quirk removing bullets. However AFO dies in his battle at Kamino ward, worst was the doctor dying before they could implant Shigaraki with AFO's quirk so now they have to delay that part, all because of Present Mic's interference

Speaking of Mic, he used his knowledge to better secure UA from the future attacks and even helped discover to Aizawa about the true identity of Kumogiri much earlier, they were also able to stop the Nomu factory and the doctor behind it much earlier too, but a high end Nomu ended up making Aizawa blind and effectively quirkless.

When they do realize someone else is altering the future, it becomes a race to find out who it is and stop them from interfering. (Iida and Mic are going to work together if they do find out about each other's future knowledge)

Izuku loses his memories of every but slowly gets back all the good memories but none of the bad ones

Posted by FrostyDepartment4410 · in r/BokunoheroFanfiction · 5 months ago

Izuku loses his memories and in an attempt to help him regain his memories and get him to stop calling them weird but cute nicknames, everyone tries helping him jog his memories with little success.

However when Izuku and Ochako were on a walk together Izuku tripped on a rock, luckily Ochako stopped him from falling, he of course he thanked her and called her by the nick name he gave her, which was Miss Floaty.

She told him it was no problem, commenting on how it reminded her on how they first met, this awakened said memory in Izuku’s head and causing him to remember every good moment they had together.

After this Ochako revealed how she was able to get Izuku to remember her to everyone else, who slowly managed to jog Izuku’s memories of them until Izuku remember everyone.

Well almost everyone as Izuku couldn’t remember Bakugou, which annoyed the blonde to no end, especially since Izuku keeps calling him Mr explody and doesn’t let him walk all over him.

Everyone reliesed that Izuku couldn’t remember bad memories, initially they didn’t think this was a bad thing.

That was until Izuku bumped into Shigaraki and Himiko, luckily somehow he managed to convince them to give themselves up after managing to talk them down and helping them see the light.

But now one member of 1A or the UA staff must remain with Izuku at all times until he learns about every villain on record.

SO MANY manga and anime's fail to stick the ending. Whether they're just divisive (AOT, Naruto, Bleach, My Dress Up Darling) or just bad (Oshi no Kho, JJK). It happens with so many big anime and manga's.

MHA seemed like it'd fall victim to the curse yet in less then a year since the ending, we've had it improved TWICE! And both times, it just got even better. Both fixed many of the complaints people previously had with it and answered many previously unanswered questions. And the anime will, if anything, only IMPROVE the ending by giving things MORE time to be explained and adding new things.

We should be grateful we got a pretty good series overall that had a nice ending.

EDIT: Okay, I’ll admit that last comment was pretty wrong. Later content fixing the issues with the ending doesn’t mean the critiques were invalid. I stand by everything else, though

The later content not being in the actual ending wasthe reason for a good bunch of the critiques

The critiques were either things that were never said within the chapter (like Deku being '''forgotten''' when he really wasn't) Ignoring blantant things the series had tried to explicitly make clear to us (Complaining about Deku giving up on being a hero after lossing his quirk when it was explicitly hammered into us that you needed one to be a hero) or just acting as if Deku didn't become the world's greatest hero after SAVING THE WORLD ON LIVE TELEVISION didn't matter just because he lost his quirk and became a teacher at the end when that isnt the big picture here, it's absolutely reasonable to assume he became the world's greatest hero and people use the biggest mental gymnastics to say otherwise.

The later content was just Hori laying things out to people that were already easily inferable in the original ending.

Damage control after the fact fixing the original endings critiques doesn’t mean they were always bullshit. Hell they were probably the reason the new endings happened in the first place.

Even then I thought the ending was pretty mid for more than a few reasons. Not the least of which being the needless time skip. That do more to ruin story’s then help them in any capacity.

I guess that’s fair enough, but I still thought the criticism was dumb

Now we just need one last ova/movie of quirkless Deku with his new suit.

I honestly liked the original ending myself and I believe mosst people would have liked it more if the idea that "it is a terrible ending where Deku works for minimum wage at McDonalds and where Ochako dumps Deku for Bakugo and absolutely nothing gets resolved " didnt get shoved down their throats for months before the chapter even released.

And yes, I realize many people mistakenly believe these memes were spawned by the ending but they werent. In fact, people have, for a long time now, said whatever random terrible shit they could make up about MHA and then stuck with whichever of these random memes fit best as the story progressed

I saw a lot of people believing it, I think in Brazil it was even worse, my Glob, I saw a lot!!!!!!! People really thought that Bakugo had been with Uraraka, there were people making videos to explain that it wasn't true, absolutely almost no one saw anymore that Deku is a cuckold, Deku is a work card, he's lonely, he abandoned his life as a teacher the first moment he received the armor, that he should have kept his powers, that he had been forgotten by everyone (yes even with the ending having a boy who was super impressed to meet him in person), that he didn't even win a statue (yes, there were people who said that, yes even with the statue being there) and now (after the last one-shot) people (most of them, there are some lucid ones) are complaining that Deku is a failure and that the manga/anime lied and that Deku couldn't become the greatest hero of all because he's not the number 1 hero, yes absolutely (almost) NOBODY realized that the hero ranking is a popularity ranking not a "greatest hero" it's like Endeavor was a greater hero (in terms of achievement and stuff) than All Might just because he dropped out of the ranks, yes, get this, almost no one realized that Deku became the greatest hero of all.

The cuck memes are the weirdest, it's like they're self inserting.

Ending was fantastic in 430 but was definitely rushed. 431 and one shot made the ending 100x better. Now MHA has one of the best endings in shounen

Summarize

MHA Canon, but the villain introductions are in reverse order.

Posted by Evyps · in r/BokunoheroFanfiction · 3 months ago

The story starts off the way it always does. Izuku getting attacked by Re-Destro in an alleyway, All Might beating up the entire meta liberation army, and Izuku rescuing Bakugo from Geten. So far so normal. Izuku gets OFA, goes to the entrance exam and...

Fights Overhaul. He still breaks his arm, unsurprisingly. Now he's taken out the Yakuza, things should be getting back to normal. And it does! If normal is the USJ getting attacked by Mr Compress and Twice. They're not quite as difficult to take out.

After the entirely uneventful sports festival, it's time for internships. But uh oh! Looks like Hosu is being attacked by -- who else -- Magne and ...Moonfish? Sure, whatever. For some reason Iida still nearly gets killed.

Forest training! Now we're getting somewhere. And as luck would have it, Muscular is still there! A shame for the little heroes in training that he's joined by the one and only All For One. Apparently he decided to be more hands on this time and personally kidnapped Bakugo, probably by putting him in a sack like krampus.

Rescue time! I hope the students are ready to fight Gigantomachia at Kamino!

After that's all said and done, everyone gets their provisional license with little trouble. But when Izuku is on patrol with Mirio, they find out the Shie Hassakai is under new management -- Dabi, Toga, Spinner, and Mustard. They decide to leave them to it.

Meanwhile, It's time for My Villain Academia! Where Mr Compress and Twice are back to fight stain and the dozens of villains who attacked the USJ in canon. There are no survivors.

And now, finally, finally, after the culture festival, the joint training, and rocking around with Endeavor, Shigaraki makes his first appearance. Where has he been this whole time? Trapped inside a vat, floating around like Goku in a bacta tank. And he's PISSED.

It takes a hundred pro heroes to take him out, alongside his army of zero pointer robots lead by Kurogiri, but after a hard fight they're victorious. Now they have to take out the real threat.

Standing atop the ruins of the city, the masterminds behind everything. Dr Garaki and that giant villain who Mt Lady kicked in the face in the first episode.

When the dust settles, they all think it's over. Peace at last.

Then the sludge villain eats deku.

They all just break out into laughter when the sludge villain appears at the end. Even Izuku inside the sludge villain is laughing.

Yeah, because Izuku just flexes and the Sludgepuppy is blasted all over the place and Izuku accidentally changes the weather.

Of course the REAL villain of the whole thing is the homeroom teacher of Aldera who tries and fails to kill Izuku with a Nitroglycerin fueled bomb.

The fact that it's Muscular in particular who just happens to be in the exact same place is hilarious to me
