Local Jewelers
Many users recommend purchasing engagement rings from local jewelers. Local stores often offer better quality products at competitive prices compared to big chain stores due to lower overhead costs [1:1]. They can also provide personalized service, allowing you to design a custom ring that fits your budget and preferences
[1:4],
[4:4]. Independent jeweler districts such as Hatton Garden in London or the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham are popular choices for finding unique and high-quality rings
[2:3].
Online Retailers
While some caution against online shopping due to privacy concerns [1:2], others have had positive experiences with online retailers like Blue Nile
[4:3], James Allen
[5:3], and Brilliant Earth
[5:2]. These platforms often offer a wide range of styles and allow customization options. Additionally, they may provide educational resources on diamond certifications and the 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, and carat) to help buyers make informed decisions
[2:7],
[5:4].
Custom and Bespoke Options
For those interested in bespoke rings, several designers offer custom services. Anna Sheffield provides customized designs and edits to existing styles [4:2]. Alexis Russell is another option for beautiful custom work
[5:1]. Custom rings allow for personalization and ensure that the ring is unique to the wearer
[3:2].
Alternative Choices
Consider lab-grown gemstones and recycled metals for a more ethical choice [1:7]. Moissanite rings are mentioned as an affordable alternative to diamonds, offering similar visual appeal at a fraction of the cost
[2:9]. Vintage or second-hand rings are also suggested as cost-effective options
[2:8].
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
For those in England, exploring local jewelry districts and independent shops can yield unique finds. If considering online options, ensure the retailer offers comprehensive information on diamond quality and has good customer reviews. Always check the return policy and warranty before purchasing. For custom rings, consult with the designer to understand the process and timeline involved.
I want to propose to my girlfriend but don't know where to start with engagement ring shopping.
I'm looking for a princess-cut, diamond ring in platinum.
I'm in England but we both like things from the US. So far I'm looking at Tiffany but where else can I find something timeless?
You need to avoid online and big chain stores. Go to a local chain or store and have them teach you all about diamonds and what to look for through the loupe. Then go buy your stone loose and have them design your ring.
100% avoid online if you don't want to start getting ads for engagement rings that will almost certainly lead to your future wife finding out about it first.
Exactly what I did and it was the best way for sure. Plus my wife has a beautiful custom ring that no one will ever have and it looks fantastic with the diamond we picked.
This is exactly what I’m in the process of doing rn! Local or family jewelers are also willing to work more within your budget- like making the design and carat weight you want, but subbing 14K gold for 10K, or using nicer gold but putting a halo around a smaller stone so that it looks just as big but it’s still at a lower cost. They’ll also help you pick a ‘timeless’ design if you’re not going in with any ideas ❤️ best of luck to ya!
Harry Winston is a classic choice
I've just had a look and some beautiful choices, although unfortunately they don't have the exact design I'm after.
Thank you though for the great suggestion.
The only suggestions I have is to buy a lab grown gemstone rather than mined and to get recycled metal, if possible.
Jewelry is nasty, nasty business, both environmentally and for humanitarian reasons
Make sure you’re shopping on incognito mode! Or the ads will betray you!
Local jeweler. They have better products for the same price, or the same product for a better price. Because they don’t have the same overhead costs as the giant chains they have more flexibility on pricing.
Got my ring at a local Hannoush franchise and the owner knew that his ring was available at Kay’s for less, significantly less, so he up front told me he was going to price match, and to beat them he threw in a few other things for free.
As a result of taking a bit of a hit then, he has gained me as a customer for life and a referral source for life as well. I love bragging about the quality of service they give, it truly is exceptional.
And there are a couple of spots in my neck of the woods with the same mentality, all locally owned.
Are the standard high street jewellers the place to go for engagement and wedding rings? Or are there online brands that are worth it?
Any recommendations for companies would be very much appreciated as I’m worried about spending so much and getting ripped off. I feel a bit lost and overwhelmed!
Independent jewellers. Try the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham or Hatton Garden in London.
They are a bit of a hike from the north but thank you, I had had these recommended by others too
All of them will have websites. I got my rings from Aardvark Jewellery and can hugely recommend them - they can post rings to you once complete.
How about Manchester? https://www.visitmanchester.com/shopping/manchesters-jewellery-quarter/
You’re not alone! I felt exactly the same when I started ring shopping. I’d suggest doing lots of research on diamond certifications (GIA, IGI, etc.) and comparing prices. Online options like Ritani let you try rings at home before committing, which really helped ease my anxiety. Don’t be afraid to ask tons of questions
What styles do you/your partner like? I’d recommend seeing the rings in person, Birminghams jewellery quarter is a great place to look. I got mine there from Aardvark
I bought an engagement ring on Etsy. My partner checked her sizing beforehand. Ring is beautiful, customised and she is very happy. Just fyi, anyone who says you need to spend thousands are talking out of their arse. I spent around £300 for a fantastic piece that she adores.
Most cost effective - 'vintage' (second hand) or artificially created diamonds.
I would always go to an independent jewellers - ideally in a 'diamond district' like Hatton Garden (London) or the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter.
Always haggle. There's a huge markup on diamonds. Haggling in high-street stores is probably much harder.
Would agree - Glasgow has quite a nice little section in Argyll Arcade where you can wander, talk and see a range of styles. (Suspect most bigger cities will)
Just if get vintage be ready to have it put in for a check around band thickness and diamond setting - mine needed rebanded a few years later.
Edit: I'd take your fiancee with you to buy after using a place-holder as she's the one wearing it hopefully 40+ years
Fully agree - surprises are nice, but these things can be a serious cost, and she's got to really love it.
Ask her if she has strong feelings about the ring sometimes there are other priorities than spending a lot on a diamond. There are very good moissanite rings now that look incredible but cost a fraction of a diamond that might be worth looking at.
It’s me, I’m she 😂 I have a rough idea of styles but I am a bit overwhelmed of where to look, what’s a normal price etc
It’s incredibly overwhelming looking online, there’s just so much around for a range of prices and I’m at the point where I have no idea what I’m looking at anymore.
Does anyone know of anywhere that could offer some advice in person and has rings that are reasonably priced? All I need is for it to be accessible by public transport, I’ll go anywhere 😅
Edit: thank you all for the responses so far - I’ve started to look through them all and they’re great. I’ll be popping into a few of them soon. May your pillows always be cool and your buses always on time.
I went to The Occasional Goldsmith to design and make my wife’s engagement ring, completely bespoke. She’s brilliant, I can’t recommend enough.
We had appointments at Austin and Blake and nicholas whylde. We have chosen to go the custom route with Nicholas whylde, they do lovely work and the consultation we had was top notch
Nicholas Wylde is a fantastic jewellery designer. I have several pieces of his. The first bought not long after he opened his first shop in Bath.
I’ve just had one made at Clifton Rocks, they have multiple independents there who do different styles. I can’t comment too much on price as they used the gold and diamonds from an inheritance.
I second this recommendation, although my very good experience was mumble years ago
Got ours from Diana Porter on Park Street. Very helpful and a bit different from chain stores.
I had my rings made by them, they used our stones and helped my husband design the rest. Very happy with the results and I think reasonably priced especially compared to the chains.
Titcombe’s in Clifton is stunning, their selection is immaculate and it’s a very special experience too. I got my wedding ring custom made from diamonds I chose myself in Hatton Garden. My engagement ring was actually from Goldsmiths as they had exactly what I was looking for and it trumped a lot of the more expensive boutique engagement rings I’d tried on.
2nd this
My boyfriend and I are just starting to look at rings together. I know what shape/style I want but now Im thinking of where the best place would be to purchase from? Are the chain stores OK (Havent seen the best reviews)? Hometown shops? Online. Would love suggestions. Thank you :D
If you share the shape/style/stone you’re looking for I can send some suggestions!
Looking for a Marquise Halo with a petite plain band or pave. I cant decide which I like more!
May be a lil more extra than you’re looking for, but I have a marquise 3 stone halo ring from Anna Sheffield. I’ve been wearing it for over a year so far and am still as in love with it as the day I got it ✨
She has a lot of unique styles and will also do anything from fully custom to “bespoke” as she calls it, which is not fully custom but rather making edits to an existing style. That’s sorta what we did since I had a champagne marquise stone sourced for my ring.
Another designer that I was strongly considering – went to her trunk show and everything – is Marrow Fine. Gorgeous styles and tons of options for stacking down the road!
I bought hers at Blue Nile 7 years ago. It’s held up well and she loves it
Local mom and pop jewelry stores are going to be your best option! Don’t go with any chain stores like Zales or Kay etc. because they don’t have good quality jewelry. The stones are usually highly included and the settings are mass produced so they break or lose stones much more frequently. You’ll have a better experience working with a local place where you can pick your own center stone and setting or design your setting from scratch if you don’t see something you like. You’ll also be able to go back to them for check ups and repairs more easily whereas big chains tend to send your jewelry away for repairs which can take weeks and still come back with issues. It comes up a lot in this sub actually.
That is what I kinda figured. Thanks for confirming!
Local jewelry shop! Or from belgium
I really love Gabriel & Co. and Kirk Kara. They have a bunch of styles that are halo marquise rings to choose from. And the best part is you can then search for a local jeweler that carries these designers and work with them on picking a design, customizing it and making it your dream ring.
I’m currently looking for an engagement ring and wanted to get some advice from people who’ve gone through this process. Where did you buy your ring, and what was your experience? I’m looking for something that’s a good balance of quality and price. Any recommendations would be super helpful!
I think Brilliant Earth has the most beautiful and unique designs, and their support is outstanding. I agree with the others who say to the 4Cs, and allow yourself to look outside the box. Your ring doesn't even have to be a diamond. It can be a different stone, a gem, anything. Congratulations on your engagement - let us know if she says yes!
Got mine from James Allen, solid quality, good price. Online shopping ftw, just don’t forget her ring size lol.
Does those plastic ring size checkers work? I got one from think brillianceearth or something and I had her adjust it up and down but unsure how accurate. Felt like 5.5
I’d say focus on the 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, and carat) to get the best value for your budget—excited to see what you choose!
I got mine from bluenile, try it might work for you too!
thank youuu! will check that out
Alexis Russell is a fantastic place for rings. They also do beautiful custom work too.
I’m aiming for something beautiful, well-crafted, and fairly priced.
Where did you buy your engagement ring?
Would you recommend them?
Any red flags to watch out for?
I got mine from a local jeweler and the service was so personal. I could touch and try everything.
If you know exactly what you want you're better off buying online where there will be 1,000 options in the carat, clarity, cut, etc.
That’s what I’m leaning toward too, there’s something about seeing it in person that online just can’t match.
Ruby Harper Fine Jewelry, she’s based in TX (I am not), so everything was done via email. Great price, super communicative, and my custom setting and the diamond I chose through her are amazing.
Are the diamonds real? On her website it says a 3 ct lab grown diamond is 500 usd?
Yes, real lab diamonds. Comes with certs and my local jeweler said it tested as a diamond. I have a 1.5ct natural diamond and the 2.8 lab that i bought from Ruby Harper looks identical to it.
That’s awesome to hear, thanks for sharing!
If budget is your biggest concern, there are recommendations for vendors on the lab diamond and moissonite subs.
That being said- I go to a local place to get my stuff done. Ive found ive always got better servcie by getting a jeweler who has the ability to do on-site repairs as well becuase it means they personally have someone around who is at least knowledgeable.
If you are getting colored or natural stones (eg natural sapphire), nothing compares to seeing the stone in person before you buy it.
I found my jeweler by asking them to do repairs on an existing piece. Most jewelers just tried to upsell or overcharge for the repair or were rude about small bits of work...and the one I use pretty much was just honest and affordable about the small repair and I've stuck with them ever since for all my work (both big and small). I also avoid any place with hard upsells or people who insult my taste (for example, shitting on my choice in stone size to upsell the fiance to something bigger so he looks like he has more money).
In general, avoid the mall places (eg Kay's etc).
There are some truely cool small jewelers and lapidaries doing some very unique things- so don't be afraid to branch out or take a look at some of their work on the related subs (eg synthetic gemstones etc), and definitely consider them too. While they can do cool stuff, they can also do very typical stuff so there are good jewelers and lapidaries to reach out to that come recommended.
Lastly - just know the markup on all stones and all fine jewelery is high. This just means if you like a perfect look go for lab stones. Diamonds aren't an investment and they common.
Thank you so much for this thoughtful and detailed reply, seriously helpful!
I got mine from Anueva Jewelry, I went in person but I can wholeheartedly recommend them! They specialize in teal Montana sapphires so they are not all traditional diamond rings.
That sounds amazing, teal Montana sapphires are so unique and beautiful! Definitely adding them to my list—thanks for the recommendation!
Got mine from a local jeweler. Chose my stone and then custom designed the band! They were very nice and let me make as many changes as I needed.
Please do not buy from Brilliant Earth. Just a minute looking through BE related posts on this sub will tell you why. Mostly terrible quality and customer service.
My partner and I are starting to look at engagement rings and I’m wondering if anyone on here has recommendations for where to look or places to avoid? Should we even be looking in town or source online? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Michael’s Jewlers!!! The best in town! 💍
Is this the store next to The Bay and the Northern Health UPCC?
I (40sM) bought my wedding ring through them. It’s from Lashbrook in the US - has a lifetime warranty option as well as re-sizing and replacement, and you also get to design your own which I really enjoyed. It was not a cheap ring however I loved being involved in the process and was very happy with Micheal’s.
Yes
They are quite expensive but awesome people to deal with. If you can afford them I’d recommend them as well
I went with James Allen.
Lab created diamonds are way more bang for your buck and I don't think we have a store like that in town as far as I'm aware.
Paris Jewellers also has lab created diamonds and gems
I just wanted to recommend not going to Michael Hill at the mall, not to be confused with Michael’s Jewellers in Parkwood as they are fabulous.
Start at the mall first to see inventory in person. Determine what you do and don't like. Did this lots with my wife, and if she saw one she liked, I asked why and it was really helpful to see what she also didn't like as well. We narrowed it down pretty quick after a few visits there and casually when abroad. Ended up with one from Michael's.
I know some people might be averse to second hand for engagement rings but I had a great time getting my ring through 100 Ways out of Vancouver! They have an online catalogue that’s perfect if you’re looking for something with a vintage feel :)) and they’re reasonably priced, I feel like I got a steal for a three stone diamond ring for under $700
I am wanting to purchase an engagement ring for my partner. Looking for something relatively bespoke and from a smaller outfit. Can anyone suggest any local jewelers in NZ or Australia?
I'm in early stages, but I am assuming Rings/Diamonds are considerably cheaper in Australia purely due to economies of scale and competition within the market? Does anyone have any experience getting these shipped to NZ or even flying over to pick it up?
I used Four Words who are based in Auckland for a lab grown diamond engagement ring. You work with their designer who will create a bespoke ring for you based on what you are looking for. I was very happy with the outcome as was my now wife. We also got them to do the wedding ring to match! Happy to DM you the design and price if you wish.
yup i have gone with four words before and will go with them soon to do our wedding rings! we haven't got very exciting rings but they definitely have produced some beautiful bespoke pieces as shown on their socials.
I'd look at second hand market on Trademe, you can always resize etc. The reason I say that is because new jewellery is ridiculously overpriced and when it is sold a second hand it often just goes for the metal and stone value.
I tried to help a friend of mine sell an engagment ring that was purchased for $500 new, I placed it on Trademe for $150 and it didn't sell...
McClurgs in Napier is fabulous.
Nik von k
Naveya & Sloane. I got my engagement ring from them and will get them to design and make my wedding ring too.
Looking to buy an engagement ring, but wondering where is the best place to shop for one? Open to online, mainstream stores, Costco, whatever.
Also wondering if at a mainstream store, then how much can I expect to negotiate?
Thanks in advance!!
I would first determine the metal that yall want. Find a place that has good quality of that metal at a fair price. Second determine the type of stone some people have begun moving away from diamonds also there were a few stores cant remember the names but they were replacing the diamonds with white saphires (probably spelled that wrong) without telling anyone. Find a reliable place that uses those types of stones. Take the two lists cross out the ones that are not on both lists. Then shop around until you find something that catches your eye.
Private non corporate jewlery stores are a hit or miss on reasonable pricing though they also tend to be the most favorable to negotiation.
It sounds weird, but check EBay, they have some reputable jewelry sellers and you can get a good price.
pawn shop.
Not buying one.
Don't tell them its an engagement. Tell them the size/style and that it's for a family member. Once you say the word "wedding" an extra 20% gets added to every price tag. (This tip works for venues, dresses, and cakes too)
I've been trying to figure out the world of engagement rings for months now, but I think I'm just clueless. My partner is a jewelry lover, and I don't really know the first thing about jewelry (other than what I've learned from her). So, I've been getting a bit overwhelmed by options and indecision while trying to find the perfect ring for her, while not getting ripped off. I'd love to have a few questions answered, and hear any other advice you all have for me.
Are there any name brands to avoid? What's the best online retailer? How long does it take to receive a ring from a jeweler, online or in person? Is it possible to tell the difference between a lab grown and a mined diamond? How do you choose properly sized baguette diamonds to go with a larger center stone without seeing them in person?
Thanks, a ton. This means a lot.
Have you narrowed it down to what stone shape of stone she wants? And lab diamonds all the way from my experience- they are real diamonds - grown in a lab, cut the same way and graded by the same grading agencies. You can get the look you want for a much more reasonable price.
Where to buy engagement rings
Key Considerations for Buying Engagement Rings:
Budget: Determine your budget before shopping. Engagement rings can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. A common guideline is to spend two to three months' salary, but this is ultimately personal.
Ring Style: Consider the recipient's style. Do they prefer classic, vintage, modern, or unique designs? Look for options that reflect their personality.
Metal Type: Common choices include white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum. Each has its own look and durability, so choose based on preference and lifestyle.
Gemstone: While diamonds are traditional, other gemstones like sapphires, emeralds, or moissanite can be beautiful alternatives. Consider the 4 Cs of diamonds: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight.
Certification: Ensure the diamond or gemstone comes with a certification from a reputable grading lab (like GIA or AGS) to guarantee its quality.
Where to Buy:
Local Jewelers: Visiting a local jeweler allows you to see the rings in person and receive personalized service. They often offer custom designs.
Online Retailers: Websites like Blue Nile, James Allen, and Brilliant Earth provide a wide selection and often better prices. They also allow you to customize your ring.
Department Stores: Stores like Macy's or Nordstrom have jewelry sections with a variety of engagement rings, often at competitive prices.
Second-Hand Options: Consider vintage or pre-owned rings from reputable sources like Etsy or local antique shops for unique finds.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a balance of quality and price, consider starting your search online with retailers like Blue Nile or James Allen. They offer a vast selection and allow you to compare options easily. Always check return policies and warranties before making a purchase.
