What Redditors are Saying

Finding Resources in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Use the Subnautica Wiki and Interactive Map for detailed resource locations.
  • Build scanner rooms in various biomes to locate resources efficiently.

Silver and Mobile Vehicle Bay Fragments

For players looking for silver, it can be found in sandstone outcrops [1:2]. Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments are typically located in the kelp forest areas [1:2]. These resources are essential early in the game for crafting important equipment and vehicles.

General Resource Gathering Tips

Exploration is key in Subnautica. As you progress through the story and explore different biomes, you'll naturally come across many of the resources you need [2:1]. Using a scanner room can significantly aid in locating specific resources within its range [3:1]. Building multiple scanner rooms in different biomes can help map out where resources are located throughout the game world [3:5].

Specific Resource Locations

  • Rubies: Found in the Bulb Zone near hot water vents and in the Grand Reef [3:3], [4:1].
  • Magnetite: Abundant in the Jellyshroom Caves [5:2], [5:4].
  • Cyclops Fragments: Engine fragments near the Aurora engines or Underwater Islands wreck [5:2]; bridge and hull fragments in the Mushroom Forest [5:4].

Scanner Room and HUD Chip

The scanner room is an invaluable tool for locating resources. Once built, it can scan for specific materials within its range. Pairing it with a HUD chip allows you to see resource locations on your heads-up display, making resource gathering more efficient [3:8], [5:5].

Avoiding Spoilers

If you wish to avoid spoilers while searching for resources, rely on exploration and the natural progression of the game. The storyline often guides you to areas rich in the resources needed for advancement [2:1]. However, if you're stuck, using external resources like the Subnautica Wiki or interactive maps can provide non-spoiler guidance.

Combination of scanner room and just exploring. The beauty of Subnautica is that you never know what you'll find when you explore.

There are several types of biomes, but scan for resources. You don’t need to remember, but follow where the story leads you.

Exploration. Experience. And sometimes scanner rooms.

In most cases you don't necessarily have to go looking for specific resources. As you follow the PDAs and radio messages and other story progression hooks, the game will typically lead you to most of the places that have the new resources you need.

Example: A PDA you find on the >!floating island!< leads you to >!the Degasi base in Jellyshroom!< where you find magnetite. The beacon for >!lifepod 19 !!Sunbeam plotline!< leads you to the >!mountain island !<where you find shale and lithium and such.

It totally depends on the sort of resource you are after. They are spread out all over. Usually specific resorces are found in certain places while others are found throughout.

If you want to find everything yourself, without looking anything up, you'll want to find the fragments to build basic base pieces and a scanner room.

The scanner room checks for a resource you select within a range.

Build a scanner room in multiple biomes, and you'll start to see where all of the resources are throughout the world.

Besides that -- scan things and check your PDA. It'll tell you more about any resources it can make since some things require "samples."

Thx :) I'll try the scanner room trick. Cuz i got one in my main base but I never thought of putting one in different biomes lol. And also wdym by samples.

3 upvotes on reddit
I
izodine · 3 years ago

Creepvine sample. Table coral. Etc. You usually get these with your knife. Many samples aren't detected by the scanner room so you'll need to observe the world and scan things.

These become important later on with advanced materials and such.

Head to Lifepod 19. Along the black walls in that entire area you'll find a TON of ruby. It goes down to 300 meters.

Also, as mentioned in other comments, constructing a depth module for your seamoth will be quite beneficial for now and for later

You can leave the seamoth above 200 and just swim down. 300 is the bottom so they'll all be above 300. 200-300 meters.

First of all make a Seamoth depth module if you haven’t yet, then make a depth module MK2. For that you need magnetite which is found in abundance in the Jellyshroom caves (big glowing mushrooms), then if you want rubies, the first place off the top of my head would be the grand reef (go in the direction of the big cloud to the right of the Aurora)

Can anyone help me with resources in subnautica?

Posted by MEMEVERSE_FRISK2 · in r/subnautica · 1 year ago

I've just recently started a playthrough as a newbie, and I'm 13-14 hours in. I have most blueprints by now, but I cannot for the life of me find any magnetite, nor any cyclops fragments. I have 1 for the engine and some other fragment, but can't find any others. Can anyone tell me where I can find any magnetite or cyclops fragments? I'm stuck at this point in the game, and in general can't find much of the rarer materials like crystalline sulfur, ruby, ion cubes, and generally rarer stuff.

Cyclops fragments - Mushroom forest (signal for emissary will guide you there) Cyclops engine - near the Aurora engines/Underwater Islands wreck outside of it on the ground.  Ruby near Officer Keen lifepod and in general in that biome plenty Magnetite - Yellyshroom cave (Ozzies lifepod gives you a clue)  Ion Cubes generally in Alien facilities  Crystalline Sulfur in Lost River (green brine pools)

If you want to avoid spoilers, get yourself a scanner room. Build it near Lifepod 17. Use the remote cameras to find your first magnetite, then construct the HUD chip. A scanner room, solar panel, and hatch don’t take up a lot of inventory space so you can deconstruct it and take it from biome to biome to find everything you need.

WHOLE COMMENT IS SPOILERS BUT THIS IS A SPOILERS THREAD SO I SHOULD BE OKAY RIGHT?

Mushroom cave for gold, lithium, and magnetite. Grassy plains (red grass) for quartz, sandstone. Sea traders path for shale out cropping. Shallows and the stalkers place (the green one) for limestone.

Personally, I love putting down a scanner base right by lifepod 17, near the entrance of the mushroom caves. Plenty of sandstone, limestone, metal salvage, quartz, and the goodies in the cave, of course.

I've been looking for a reason to write this down somewhere. Ignoring the stuff that's obvious, ubiquitous, or late-game (you'll find it when you get there), the first good place to find certain items is:

  • Lithium is in >!the Mushroom Forests!<
  • Magnetite is in >!the Jellyshroom Caves!<
  • Ruby tends to be >!near thermal vents!<
  • And there's a lot of good stuff in >!the caves on the QEP island.!<

If you forget what outcrops hide which resources, check your PDA.

Scanner Rooms are under-appreciated. Get yourself the HUD chip ASAP, priority number one as soon as you find your first Magnetite.

Also, grab a sample of every single plant the game will let you pick up and build a series of growbeds in and around your main seabase for them. With the possible exception of the Tiger Plant.

The PDA will say that there’s an entrance to large cave system when you’re nearby it. You can also look up maps online if you’re curious (but you may get spoiled on some end game areas accidents so be careful)

If you're following the plot as the radio and PDA guide you and doing some basic exploration, you will find these places. Trust me, as soon as you find the Jellyshroom Caves, you will immediately know where you are.

One trip there with a seamoth is enough to completely set you up for the rest of the game for gold and diamonds. Might need 2 trips for lithium, or just hit the mushroom forest since you gotta go there anyways.

Quick and dirty resource gathering reference initiative

Posted by Suspicious-Basil-444 · in r/subnautica · 1 month ago

I am putting together a simple table with the best location for a quick resource grab when needed. This is a work in progress. Updates are welcome.

Tried to determine the single best location based on these criteria:

  • closest location to safe shallows
  • greatest number of large deposits (when available)

Basic resources

  • titanium: crash site
  • copper: grand reef
  • quartz: dunes
  • lead: crag field
  • salt: grassy plateaus
  • lithium: bulb zone
  • silver: mountains
  • gold: underwater islands

Late game locations

  • uraninite: >! lost river!<
  • nickel: >!lost river (green side) !<
  • ruby: >!lost river (green side) !<
  • cyanide: >!lava zone !<

Wouldn't >! sea treader's path!< be best for gold, lithium and diamonds?

1 upvotes on reddit
Suspicious-Basil-444 · OP · 1 month ago

Yes and no. It’s good for small amounts. When you need quantity such as a full inventory it’s not good because you are going to farm 3x more and throwing away 2/3 of what you collect. That’s why I want to stick with large deposits instead of outcrops.

This is useful when you can’t really see where resources are. It’s how I got first bits of lithium and magnetite. It’s also somewhat better than chasing fish down.

You can also just use prop

1 upvotes on reddit
S
sal880612m · 4 years ago

You can but if you see 4 bladder fish in an area the grav trap will keep them all there and make it visually clear where they are. Catch them faster with the sea glide or catch them at your leisure with the grav trap.

Another thing I’ve consider but have yet to try is using a grav trap as a temporary dump site for items. Say your exploring ruins and fill your inventory if you drop your items in an area you could use a grav trap to keep them suspended at depth. Not sure how well it would actually work though.

The Most Complete (and shortest) Subnautica Guide for Novice [No spoilers]

Posted by drromanophd · in r/subnautica · 3 years ago

Do not read walkthroughs (except this one :), do not watch streams, do not google where to find resources, how to build a rocket, what to do if.... Even the ore description may contain spoilers. The exploration process is point of this game — so explore. Swim in any direction, meet the world, scan everything, read the PDA, collect resources.

The game has a lot of resources. Literally — an infinite amount of every type, live or mineral. Therefore, you can throw anything away at any time (especially since it will remain there). You will find much more later. Risking your life for a piece of ore is definitely not worth it.

There are few dangerous places in the game — it can be easily avoided (use the logic, it is quite obvious that the mouth of an underwater volcano is in some way dangerous). There are a lot of dangerous creatures in the game, but you don't have to kill them, it's almost always easier to escape. At some point, doubts will even begin to torment you — do you have the right to kill in this world?

Never swim away without a couple bottles of water, food and a first aid kit. Considering the fact that in almost all biomes, even desert ones, contain some food and drink — you need to get acquainted with biomes, study them, and this is hard to do in a state half-dead from thirst. Remember that the return journey also takes time.

Feel free to build bases. You may think that choosing a location for the base is a most important decision... well, not quite so. You can build bases in any quantity in any form in any place, wherever it comes to mind. Later it can always be altered or reconstruct or completely disassembled (getting back all the resources spent). Some infrastructure elements require a certain space, but you would be surprised how much you can install and store in a simple tube segment.

The game has a leisurely, non-binding plot. Just do not listen to the next radio broadcast — and story will be paused. You will not be late and you will not miss anything. Explore the surroundings, sequentially, in a spiral and you will get everything you need to get. Read the PDA, there is a lot of valuable information. Returning to the first tip — this game is about exploration. This is most charming part, do not miss it!

Last, but not least. Do not install any mods. Most of them simplify the already simple gameplay, and some breach the very concept of game.
