Who is Kenjaku?
Kenjaku is a significant antagonist in the manga series "Jujutsu Kaisen." He is known for his ability to possess other people's bodies, which he has done throughout history. His current form is that of Suguru Geto, a character whose body he took over after Geto's death [1:2]. Kenjaku's actions and motivations are central to the plot, as he orchestrates events that drive the narrative forward.
Kenjaku's Motivations
Kenjaku is portrayed as a morally bankrupt scientist who conducts experiments with cursed energy. His ultimate goal is to merge humanity with Tengen, a powerful entity, to evolve humans into a new form [2:3]. This merger plan has been in the works for centuries, with Kenjaku making reincarnation contracts and preparing large amounts of cursed energy
[2:8]. Despite his seemingly chaotic nature, Kenjaku operates with a clear objective, driven by curiosity and the desire to push the boundaries of cursed energy.
Relationship with Other Characters
Kenjaku's relationship with other characters adds complexity to his role. He is indirectly related to Yuji Itadori, the protagonist, having possessed Yuji's mother and orchestrated his birth [3:1]
[4:6]. However, this connection is not deeply explored in the series, leaving some fans disappointed
[4:10]. Kenjaku's interactions with Sukuna, another major antagonist, are also noteworthy but lack depth
[4:5].
Kenjaku's Impact on the Plot
Kenjaku serves as a catalyst for many events in "Jujutsu Kaisen," including the Culling Games, which are designed to generate cursed energy for his merger plan [2:7]. Despite being a central figure, some fans feel that Kenjaku's influence on the story is inconsistent and underwhelming
[4:4]. His plans often seem more like plot devices rather than genuine threats, leading to criticism about his execution as a villain
[4:1].
Foreshadowing and Symbolism
Kenjaku's name and abilities are rich with symbolism and foreshadowing. His name refers to a rope wielded by the Bodhisattva Kannon, symbolizing his ability to snare souls and lead them to evolution through the merger [5:1]. This thematic depth adds layers to his character, even if his backstory remains largely unexplored.
In summary, Kenjaku is a pivotal character in "Jujutsu Kaisen," driving much of the series' conflict and intrigue. While his motivations and relationships offer potential for compelling storytelling, his execution as a villain has received mixed reviews from fans.
Kenjaku should be talked about positively 🔥❤️
That's just geto's aura without the racist part
I mean it's really not. Kenjaku's love for experimentation is entirely un-present from Geto. they have very different vibes, even his speech-patterns are completely different, which is what makes his return in JJK 1 all the more bizarre when we see it after having read 0.
Oh yeah for sure that comment was a joke but their behaviour is very different. Like geto is much more chaotic and straightforward even though he is very smart but Kenny is on another level like I love geto but I really really like Kenny as a character bcs he's that mad scientist that does whatever it takes for knowledge and his plans just cuz he wants to. If I wouldn't get caught I'd do it too ngl.
He rlly just racist part with a mad scientist lol
Kenjaku lost -1000000 aura after that fight
he killed the best girl of JJK
most fraudulent win I’ve seen so far, gege really did everything in his power to nerf Yuki.
The whole battle was just plot convenience
So no I will not address kenjaku with kindness..
He'll never be Geto, but I enjoy his yapping
I really hope we learn more about Kenjaku and Tengen's relationship, I have a feeling they were the Gojo and Geto of their own era, based on the "my one and only friend" line.
I have no hope now that Kenjaku is probably dead, and idk what Tengen is up. Gege doesn't have a good record of showing deep relationships
I always assumed Sukuna was Kenjaku's first experiment, with Tengen. In other words, Kenjaku and Tengen are Sukuna's parents.
he was pretty while doing it tho. while I dislike how Yuki's death was dealt out, I don't blame Kenjaku for that, but the author's writing ability. Kenjaku himself did nothing out of character or uninteresting. "fraudulent" is a really nothing statement that just kind of makes discussion about an piece of art really boring, as a meaningless generalisation of all parts of a decision in the writing of a story.
Alright know it all enough with the flowery language, Kenjaku surviving that black hole was fraudulent (bullshit) and we both know it
Besides Meguna’s ass. This is one of the biggest asspull in the entire series
And it’s partly intentional on Gege’s part.
The biggest criticism of Kenjaku I see on this sub is that he’s underdeveloped or underwritten, and that he had a lot of “missed potential” as far as a backstory or a meaningful interaction with Yuji. However I don’t really see it that way for a few reasons:
Kenjaku not getting a proper backstory is much more understandable once you start viewing him more like The Joker. He’s a malicious villain who only wants to create chaos and cursed energy. No backstory ever could justify or bring reason to his heinous actions. He’s actually more irredeemable than Sukuna, so giving him any kind of background where he’s less than the monster we see him as would be kinda gross in my opinion.
People who don’t understand his character or see him as underdeveloped really don’t pay attention to the amount of cunning and evil he actually displayed in the series. This man single-handedly shaped like half of Jujutsu society, created a new race of half human half cursed beings, then almost merged ALL OF JAPAN into a huge cursed monstrosity. How much more could he do?
Yuji learning the truth about Kenjaku is kind of a moot point because Yuji DID learn that Kenjaku was one of his parents. Choso basically tells him this and it’s implicitly understood for the rest of the story. It would be redundant to have Yuji face off against his horrible creator because that’s already Choso’s whole arc and Yuji is already the type to not care about his upbringing (tells Yasuke he doesn’t care who his parents are). Having Yuji confront Kenjaku would just rob Choso of his moment.
People were mad that it was Takaba (and Big Yuta) that defeated Kenjaku, but honestly it was like 3 layers of poetic. Takaba was an awakened sorcerer and not Higaruma, so Kenjaku saw him as worthless and basically just food to the fire of his chaos, so losing to him is great dramatic irony. Also once you get the Joker influence in Kenjaku, it’s great that the 1000 year old Sorceror who’s about to pull the darkest joke of all time is beat by an honest comedian. And finally, Yuta gets to kill Geto for good. What more could you ask for?
Was there anything I missed? How do yall feel about Kenjaku?
My problem with Kenjaku isn’t actually that he doesn’t have a backstory or he’s underdeveloped. When I finished Yuki-Choso-Tengen vs Kenjaku, he was arguably my favorite character in the series, done perfectly well.
However, what made me dislike the handling of his character was that he had too many relationships that Gege couldn’t handle, so he was always going to end on a low note. Kenjaku can’t be the big bad, because that’s Sukuna’s job, so he can’t go out too dramatically. He’s related to Yuji, his parents, and grandfather, but he never gets a chance to talk to Yuji and tell him “the why”. Even if Yuji doesn’t want to hear it, it seems like the yapper would want to just tell him anyways. I think I wouldn’t have mind Kenjaku’s defeat if he wasn’t so important, since Gege clearly didn’t want him to be as important as he ended up being.
Also, Kenjaku vs Takaba is fucking peak. Anyone who says otherwise must HATE the D’Arby brothers from JoJo.
yeah the problem is if you remove kenjaku the story doesn't change. Kenjaku's influence to the narrative was very inconsistent, and alot of actions never had any weight to them. Kenjaku kills Yuki only to be killed by Yuta, Kenjaku brings in the army, but wait the army was just a ploy to strengthen the merger, and whatever happened to the merger; it doesnt matter beause it was all for the lols. Maybe if Kenjaku actually had some sort of impact to the story long term we would feel different
Damn. When you put it that way, all of a sudden Kenjaku makes sense. He’s not meant to be an interesting character, that’s just a side effect of all his relations. He’s more just Gege’s scapegoat for why everything is happening. That’s… honestly really sad to think about.
Fair point but if you want to know the why of Kenjaku just look at the picture of my post.
I think people didn’t have issues with Takaba vs Kenjaku. I think people were disappointed by how Kenjaku immediately died because of Yuta and his influence on the story immediately stopped.
Gege could have done something with Yuta vs Kenjaku, since this would be the second time Yuta fought Geto even if its someone else controlling him. it would have been peak if Gege brought back the body-soul thing from Shibuya, and have Geto create an opportunity for Yuta to take out Kenjaku. but alas it never was to be...
I don't feel like calling Kenjaku chaotic isn't really right either. He's just a REALLY morally bankrupt scientist.
The whole merger thing is a big cursed energy science experiment that he's been trying and failing to pull off for 1000 years. He's not doing it for any larger goal other than to see what would happen. He was just interested in how far he could push cursed energy.
The cursed wombs and Yuji were side experiments to have a better understanding of merging humans and curses.
It's not really chaotic, since he had a goal and was working towards that the entire time. Tried not to involve innocents either. But he wasn't like an Aizen level planner that "had a hand in everything that has ever happened", which some people were trying to make him out to be. He just carried out his experiments, took opportunities when they were given, and came within an INCH of fulfilling his lifelong goal.
But another one of his experiments, Takaba, ended up giving almost as much enjoyment as his 1000 years of life. It wasn't AS satisfying as making the merger happen, but to Kenjaku it wasn't the worst way to go out.
Plus, he could just leave the rest up to Sukuna, who in all honesty should've beat the main cast a few times.
Honest question cuz maybe i misunderstood, are we sure the merger was a 1000 year plan? When was it stated that the merger was his ultimate end goal for Tengen? I think it’s perfectly in character for Kenjaku to want Tengen to evolve even before he had the merger plans. Just to see what would happen.
But then he found himself in a time period where:
Tengen has evolved into effectively a cursed spirit
He had access to the body of a cursed spirit manipulator
He had a cursed object to seal the Six Eyes User
And he had Sukuna ready to reincarnate whenever.
I say that to say this, if Kenjaku realized he could basically do the merger just with Mahito’s ability and clever barriers, he’d have done that.
Kenjaku’s like a dog chasing cars. He doesn’t know what do with one once’s he’s caught it. He just does things
>Honest question cuz maybe i misunderstood, are we sure the merger was a 1000 year plan?
At least the culling games were, since he was making reincarnation contracts with people who lived 500 years BEFORE the Heian era (Druv). The culling games were a way to prep a large amount of cursed energy to use in the merger, so he definitely had it in mind.
Remember that the sole fact Tengen has evolved this much means that humans can now merge with them. Never stated how cause Gege be Gege, but through barrier techniques and binding vows I don't doubt there's a way.
Tengen being more cursed spirit than human & Kenjaku aquiring CSM is just a convenient way to ensure that Tengen can't try to refuse the merge.
This is all stated in Chap. 145
>I say that to say this, if Kenjaku realized he could basically do the merger just with Mahito’s ability and clever barriers, he’d have done that.
That doesn't really change what I said. That just means he found an easier solution to his experiment. And technically, he COULD do that if he had the cursed energy to. But he doesn't, so Tengen remained the most optimal way.
Obito Kenjaku was... the coolest funniest guy!
Kenjaku in Noritoshi Kamo’s body when he sees his wife and blood cursed spirit: “I have the opportunity to do the funniest thing rn”
He’s unimaginably fucked up, but at the end of the day he does things for the sake of “his comedy” if you will.
He’s ironically similar to a character such as shidou from blue lock
Behind all that logic, what he wants to see is “an explosion” of sorts
He’s old as shit, he wants any new experience he can get it seems.
Immortality does that I guess, makes you twisted in form or mind
I know that kenjaku doesn't care about anyone, but the way its being depicted, there is something weird about his character.
As yuji's maker he suggests making an ally out of him, he doesn't say threaten him or anything, only make an ally out of him.
(Yuji was raised by wasuke, kenjaku abondoned him for years, if he had raised him perhaps that step would have been easier)
In shibuya he says yuji is tough and that he is expecting much from him...
And then comes perhaps the reason anyone would think he cares, he thanks sasaki of the occult club of getting along with his son yuji, we only see kenjaku in chapter 10 after yuji had already gone through his first death...
Meaning that kenjaku was secretly watching before that, but for how long? And why? He never tried to make use of sasaki or any of yuji's friends, so he would secretly watch yuji for an unknown amount of time only out of curiosity or if he cared ?!
Kenjaku wants to create a merger that ends humanity, he has no interest for ordinary things like he implies when talking to choso in the tomb of the star.
Only thing left is motherly care for her child, perhaps body hopping made him inherit some of kaori's personality??!
He later says to noritoshi that he took out those who appointed an executioner to yuji, wether he says that to brag, to show that he does good things too, or maybe he believes its the right thing to do?
I leave this to you readers to decide...
I think kenjaku does care
Kenjaku is not a being of rationality or morals
Rather
Kenjaku does what they want
This includes whims
It comes down to “why not?”
I guess in a way he cares.
He took possession of yuuji's mom, so maybe he took some of her mother's nature, and nothing is stronger than the motherly instincts.
It's even more than that. He took possession of a woman and became Yuji's mom after that. The maternal instincts (if they exist for Kenjaku ) don't come from Kaori, but 100% from him because Kaori wss long dead before Yuji was even a thing
I've said for a long time that kenjaku is originally female. It's a shame we didn't find out what their original body looked like.
Also he stayed a very long time in her body because the wounds from the seam on his forehead healed
Edit: or jin's cursed technique made him the better in sex than anyone ever (even above satoru gojo)
Kenjaku: I didn’t carry that kid for 9 months just to see someone kill him. I may be an evil mass murderer who has committed countless horrific acts across centuries but I’m a good mom!
I mean he is Yuji`s mom in a way
Explain pls
Took over Yuji's mothers body after she died and then got pregnant by Yuji's father.
Being absent was the best he could do for yuji
He looks like Jin, probably brings some butterflies back-
In the stomach?
Dude has no backstory, he's barely a fleshed out or deplored character, his motivations are so shallow and surface level, and then he dies underwhelmingly to brainrot and a sneak attack.
It's actually hilarious how even his Merger plan was barely treated as a actual high level threat that needed to be stopped(tho that's more the fact that the final arc was basically a fighting gauntlet). I'm fine with them stopping it but it was never treated with the same level of fear and terror like other main villains plans.
Dude is literally related to the MC and that goes nowhere cause Gege just went "nah Yuji doesn't care about his parents" so he wouldn't have to actually do anything with it.
Dude is actually smart, he just ignored or got rid of any interesting plotlines or potentially interesting plotlines so he could focus on the cool, flashy stuff.
Kenjaku: "What is my purpose."
God: "You kill Yuki and then get your head chopped off."
Kenjaku: "Omg..."
I do disagree on him being a plot device, but from his execution (mainly in the later chapters), I can see where it's coming from.
Kenjaku was introduced as a mysterious villian who's goals are just for his own personal entertainment, you can't stick it up to him if he does it all for fun, simple yet effective.
His plans though in the conclusion, were disappointing. All of this build up for it to turn into nothing. I'm not saying that we should have gotten the Merger, but Kenjaku's performance in the latest arc was underwhelming. He's supposed to be the brain, the mastermind, taking him out in few chapters was....absurd. good plan from the good guys, but I think Kenjaku should have gotten something more.
Regardless, Uraume low diffs.
nah even Sukuna knows Uraume gets negged.
I dont even like kensoyjaku
Uraume has better everything, they can't be harmed by any of Kenjaku's abilities.
They low diff.
criminally underutilized character. His relationship with Sukuna was so bland.
tbh you could say this about everyone not named gojo and prolly sukuna.
for a character gege apparently hates so much. Put the most effort into writing.
I kind of disagree because I don’t think characters like inumaki or Kusakabe are underutilized, I feel as if they just aren’t that important to the plot. Kenjaku pretty much drove the plot up until Shinjuku.
I completely disagree. They bantered they had a feeling of familiarity and camaraderie while also it didn’t seen like Sukuna fully trusted Kenny. The one thing JJK was always good at till the end was character interactions and Kenjaku and Sukuna is absolutely no different. That shit fucked.
This man possessed the body of his deceased mother and genetically engineered Yuji for a purpose - and then murdered his father - and we never got any sort of further interaction? No reaction from Yuji about something so sickening and sad ?
That will always flabbergast me but then again Yuji and Sukuna’s relation was never explored either LOL. They both could have been so compelling :l
>No reaction from Yuji about something so sickening and sad ?
Do we not find out in the first few chapters that Yuji straight up does not care about his parents? Kenjaku could've revealed that Sukuna is Yuji's uncle right to his face and I doubt it would make any difference. Sure, it could be developed further but we already know that Yuji doesn't care for them.
That was when he was a high school kid whose only worries were his grandpa’s health, his club and studies, and tall women with nice asses. I’m sure how he feels about his parents would change a bit after becoming a sorcerer and finding out jujutsu society’s #1 opp is his MOM. Higuruma’s potential rivals Gojo’s btw. Personally I dislike the characterization of Yuji by fans that makes him out to be completely indifferent towards family besides his grandpa due to what he said in episode 1, or because he only called Choso his brother once. He would also DEFINITELY care about Sukuna being his spiritual uncle and would have used that in his speech in Shinjuku (making Poukuna even angrier)
not even a hundred, 30 more would have tied up like 90% of the loose ends. Heian Era flashback 5 chapters, Kenjaku and Yuji interaction 3 chapters, Yuta Kenjaku fight 1 chapter, more fleshed out conclusion + Gojo funeral 2 chapters, 3 big clans 5 chapters, Hakari and Kashimo vs Sukuna 2 chapters, JJK lore (wtf is tengen and kenjaku relationship!!!) 5 chapters, etc.
my calculations could be way off, but you can do a lot with a few chapters if you know what you are doing and have a clear goal for the story you want to tell.
Slides 1 & 2
"The world is shaped by our Curse Techniques"
Meets the guy who shapes the world with Comedian lol.
It also foreshadows Yuji and Sukuna's special relationship as Sukuna's soul always looks different from his physical (heian) form when with Yuji. Which also works as foreshadowing Sukuna's desire for connection and a human life.
Slides 3 & 4
"Concept can't be defined semantically or pragmatically" I.e. either by definition or an exhaustive list.
Kenjaku's trump card against Yuki is the first thing exposed about him, Anti-Gravity. A concept extremely hard and loose to define with no natural occurences even theoretically.
On a related note.
Kenjaku is the 2nd best barrier user after Tengen as is stated. But his best feat isn't manipulating the sunyata barrier or the barrierless domain, instead it's him becoming a type of domain expansion as he becomes AG itself. A feat that pushes everything else to its limits.
Slides 5 & 6.
More of a stretch but surprised no one ever brings it up.
It's an Evangelion reference lol. Merged humanity with a divine like being to ascent to greater heights.
And just like Evangelion the main flaw of Kenjaku is his lack of human connection and him admitting that's what he craved, sort of like Gendo. We even got the Sea of Fanta lol.
It's further highlighted in how Kenjaku does show some regard of gratitude to Yuji's old friends.
Also as a minor point. Kenjaku being so behind the scenes also flows perfectly with how the Prison Realm works.
Slides 7 & 8.
Kenjaku did unspeakable things to a woman using a curse and his own blood (notice how the head is covered too).
Kenjaku either killed or waited for Kaori's death to take her body and repeat what he did in the Edo period.
Sukuna's twin's soul couldn't be possesed by Kenjaku, he was set up to be Yuji's mother from the start and we already knew how.
If anyone got any extra Kenjaku foreshadowing be sure to share
Kenjaku has the Goda technique :P
Mechamaru's. . Whole fight with Mahito too
I think gege likes evangelion a lot
Who doesn't lol?
Even simple stuff like the importance of hands in anime can in part be attributed to Eva
Me cause it hurt my feelings :(
I have seen the take of "evangelion is poorly written", and I don't disagree right to me, evangelion is just condensed emotions and condensed depression in a 26 episode format. From like a pure "technical" storytelling ability it is NOT good, but I still love it beacuse it means a lot to me and the emotions in the characters are just so raw.
Genuienly the 3rd impact and hands shi was NOT a coincidence in Gege's writting, evangelion has basically became an integral part of anime culture, people may dislike it but no wonder it is literally a part of the DNA of anime, kind of like DBZ (except way more complex and personally enjoyable, with all due respect cellbro I think we can both agree on that).

His name is also foreshadowing. Kenjaku's name refer to a "rope" wielded by a Bodhisattva called Kannon, who used it to snare souls and leads them to salvation
Notice it? Kenjaku's technique allows him to, in a way, snare other people and take over their bodies. His goal is start the Merger, which will assimilate humanity and leads them to evolution
Wait Kannon?? Ts gonna go hard for code geass lol. Also great catch
Reading comprehension? In this sub? And... positive reading comprehension? Pack your bags and leave man, they'll be here before you know it
This looks sick asf. Love the art style.
It looks like you drew over something?
Very cool :3
Thanks pitou 👑❤️
Scary cool
he took the white splash so yuji could hit the black flash
unrelated but not really, I see sometimes the comparison between Kenjaku and Sukuna and who is more evil and while Sukuna is not exactly what I'd call a "great guy", what Kenjaku did with the death paintings is worse than anything Sukuna ever does in the manga imo (on screen things, who knows what Kenjaku and Sukuna do off screen)
I think it's Kenjaku handily
When sukuna dies, we see a more human side to him and he even decides to walk a different path in his next life, and we are even given a bit of reason why he acted how he did. Even though that doesn't make him a good guy, its a lot more humanity than we ever see from kenjaku
>its a lot more humanity than we ever see from kenjaku
I don't think Sukuna ever showcased as much humanity as Kenjaku did at the ending of his fight with Takaba. Had a stand up routine genuinely enjoying himself with Takaba, asked Takaba what was wrong when he saw him crying, praised him for being funny while Takaba thanks him etc.
Sukuna is somewhat implied to do bad things like r8pe, Kenjaku is heavily implied/confirmed to have done that (or at the minimum, heavy abuse). That alone should tell you the difference
Sukuna killed and ate men, women and CHILDREN, burned villages down, etc. Is that 'better' than what Kenny did?
Sukuna murders like everyone in a 200m radius in Shibuya no?
Like we aren’t shown him just mowing down people but he does cut innumakis arms so he could have 100% just killed 1000+ people in the most brutal manor ever
Edit: he does reduce his domains range so sub 200m but still
Also Fuya fire to kill Mahoraga is massive so
Kenjaku wants to merge all of Japan into a giant blob because he thinks it would be fun.
Jujutsu hitler possesing a jujutsu hitler
Nah, that's slandering Kenjaku isn't racist!
Jujutsu Mengele more like
Jujutsu Himmler possessing Jujutsu Hitler
W Kenjaku, walking an innocent civilian away from danger
WE CAN'T SCALE GANESHA
FUCK YOU GEGE
We can't scale 2/3 of the cast
Gets oneshot by Garuda
Kenny imo :)
Crazy that people are saying Yuta alone wins when Shinjuku Yuta doesn't even have basketball domain
He does?
I guess it mean pre yujo shinjuku yuta
Kenny still wins tbh
Kenny still slams, he wins the domain clash so Yuta can't use JL, he is the best H2H fighter in JJK (bar mayyybe Heian Sukuna bc he has 4 arms), Yuki should have a more refined SD/HWB than Yuta and even hers broke basically instantly
Why can't Yuta use JL outside domain
By all meanings, im sure he meant it wouldnt be coolio without the sure effect
Or something like that idk i guess
What does this mean for Yuki 🥀
umm idk there has to be some way to have yuki > kenjaku right
Tengen is such a bum that she debuffed yuki and choso by 10x.
If Kenjaku is not top 20, then Yuki isn't, who lost a 2v1 to Kaigaku along with Choso and Tengen. Yes, tengen is a bum but still
"kaigaku" bro is watching jujutsu no yaiba 😭🙏🏻
well then Yuki isnt top 20 she still top -1 baddies tho icl
Not even for debate. Yuki is true baddest of all
Yuki apparently is a bottom 5 character
Kusakabe fighting sukuna > yuki not even making it to the jumping
lmao
Would that make Yuki not even top 30. If so, I'm willing to hear you out 🧐
if she gotta go for kenny to not be top 20 then she gotta go
Meth
That would be accurate considering Japan's history with meth
Gus and Kenny would be lethal
Is this real…?
Bro was Hitler a sorcerer?
Probably just hiding
He made Hitler fail at art school
